The end product was very good. We had difficulty with the time frame for completion. It dragged on and several times we were notified the job had been completed only to find it was only partially finished. We were dealing with this company long distance (Richmond area to Hampton Roads area) so we were not on site 100% of the time. Because of this, it seemed we had difficulty getting the job completed in a reasonable length of time as well as having the job completed as contracted without our constant follow up.

We did not go with this company as their prices were nearly two times more than the contractor we did choose. Budget was most important as the purpose of the work is to put the house on the market. However, we were impressed with this company's professionalism, their presentation was well done, detailed, and all of their subcontracted work licensed. The contract included inspections and specific start dates and completion dates. Angie's list also had a coupon for them. If we were making the upgrades because we were planning on staying in this house indefinitely, we would have likely chosen THI.
Description of Work: The provider came out to the house and discussed a kitchen upgrade to include granite countertops, new backsplash, and two additional cabinets. Additionally we wanted estimates on tiling a bathroom floor, updating a Jack and Jill bathroom, and creating a fire safe closet in the garage. Estimate was completed within a week and provider scheduled an appointment to discuss each part and what the estimate included.

Total Home Improvement was very responsive to our request and met with us quickly and provided a very detailed estimate in about a week. Their attention to detail was incredible and they left no task forgotten that we had asked for. The price was pretty much the only thing that kept us from going with them. I think it is because they are such a large company with more overhead, but they were nearly 10,000 more than the other estimates we had received. I would absolutely use them for a project if I could afford them!
Description of Work: We were getting several estimates on redoing a kitchen, including removing a wall, framing in existing back door and adding a sliding glass door. Several appliances were being moved as well, including gas lines and water lines.

Overall it went great! We obtained several estimates for our projects. THI gave us the BEST estimate and they made us feel as if we were their top priority project. They were so patient with us, showing us prior projects that they had completed, taking us places to pick out our granite, and bringing us over SEVERAL cabinet doors different color and styles. It took us (me) forever to decide. We (I) must have changed our mind at least a dozen times and they were not only patient but gave us the pros and cons on each choice. We encountered a problem with the floor and the owner took time himself to crawl under our house, go up in the attic and spend over 2 hours at our house trying to give us the best advise. Joe was our project officer for the patio and Barry was our project officer for the Kitchen. I would have questions that I could not lay to rest and would text Barry on a Saturday or maybe even a Sunday and he pantiently and promtly would reply back. He was professional, and kind. He tried to always make me happy even if it meant to change a wine wrack to shelves, or an 18 inch light to a 24 inch light, or the light over the sink. Their electrician Ricardo did superb work. Their tile layer, Wilson was accomodating and did flawless tile work. Their painter Kenny did such a great job that we hired him to paint the rest of our celings. My husband and I have never seen a better painter, a little expensive but high quality/perfect results. Their project coordinator, Carol, become part of our daily contacts. She devoted countless hours to our project to ensure it went smooth, all our needs were met and everyone on the team did their part. She was the core of the project; an amazing woman! We feel we have made life long friends who will help us with any home project we may have in the future. We don't have to worry about them taking advantage of our money. My husband and I would HIGHLY recommend this company, it's a family owned business that treats their customer as their own family. Thank you THI team!

We chose Total Home Improvements to finish our attic room over our garage. Frank met with us and looked at what we wanted to do. He was great. He understood what we wanted and made us feel comfortable that it was something that could be done. Our project manager was Barry. At first, I was concerned that Barry was on the young side and he might not have the experience to complete what seemed to us an impossible job. Oh, my goodness, I was worrying for nothing! Barry did a phenominal job. He kept us informed of everything, he explained things completely, and was very nice to work with. He really listened to us and understood just what we wanted. He even took it upon himself to fine tune the plan a bit to really give our room character. WE COULDN'T BE HAPPIER! All of the workers were so nice and polite and helped make the entire remodeling experience enjoyable for us.

Overall, it went very well. (They were actually the sixth contractor I dealt with for the same problem in a two-month period--really odd circumstance. Others failed to return calls, made exaggerated and costly "fix proposals," or forgot to show up after scheduling a repair.) Company reps showed up on the date and times agreed upon, explanation of problem was clear and logical, cost was reasonable, and repair was performed in an efficient and professional manner. I especially appreciated the offer to inspect for any other issues--and the conclusioin that I needed no further repairs at the time. Only reason I graded Responsiveness as a "B" is that it took two weeks to actually get a repairman to my home.
Description of Work: I had a recurring leak (four times--builder tried to repair twice, then independent company, then Total Home Improvements) which occurred where converging rooflines and poor gutter design allowed water to stand and soak through to house frame and interior drywall. (Leak only occurred with heavy wind and rain--hurricanes, heavy nor-easters). Total Home Improvements initially sent out a Sales Rep who took pictures and interviewed me. They consulted back at company, then offered me a solution and estimate. Once I signed contract and paid 40% of estimate, they sent repairman to complete: removal and replacement of shingles/guttering/siding to install a rubber sheeting under Tyvek and a metal channel on top of re-installed shingles/guttering/siding to better channel rain in the future. Remainder of cost was paid upon completion. They also did a quick inspection of other potential problem areas on the roof, but told me there was no need for additional repair.

Overall, things went ok. I was very happy with some of the quality, but disappointed in other areas. First, the sales person Joe was great. He was very thorough in the walk-through and gave honest opinions and feedback. After signing the contract, we coordinated for a second walk-through with the foreman and the main contractor responsible for the job. Here is where things slowly started to need micromanaging. They somehow underestimated the square footage during this meeting, and I ended up spending more money than I was expecting (and had to rush out to buy more tile in the middle of installation). This wasn't a big deal since I ended up purchasing from one of the big box stores, but it could have been a major problem if I had special ordered the materials. Also, one of the main items that made me go with THI was that they told me there would be a daily log left in the house to let me know what had been accomplished, any issues, etc. and I could ask any questions or raise concerns. This never happened, which ended up really disappointing me. I work an insane amount of hours at my job, and do not usually have consistent access to the same phone number for them to get in touch with me. So a log would have been perfect for someone like me to answer questions and communicate with the contractors. The second day of the work, I returned home to find that despite it being clear in the contract and walk-through, they had Durocked the wall that was supposed to have been knocked out for the glass enclosure. The shower seat was installed on the wrong side, and the plumbing had not been moved to the center of the shower - all things that had been covered. So it was a day's work wasted. The contractor was apologetic and fixed it the next day, which was good. But it still delayed the project completion by a full day. There were several times that a log would have clarified their plan, or at least made me more comfortable with the progress. The bathroom turned out beautifully - a testament to their quality of work. However, their finishing work was surprising. The tile guy accidentally got mud-colored grout on the ceiling and instead of identifying it and fixing it, they ignored it. I had to bring it up three times, including the final walk-through, when we should have been signing off on all work completed. When paying this much money, no client should have to ask that the finishing work be impeccable! If I wanted sloppy work, I could have saved quite a bit of money and DIY'ed the project. But I paid for a company and had the highest expectations that they fix all mistakes and that the final product would reflect attention to detail without me having to ask for it. The floor installation was fast. They were very efficient in moving all of our furniture and ripping out the old flooring. However, we found mold on the concrete slab underneath, and I was not notified about this. I just came home to it. So I had to stop the work to remediate the mold. Again, communication would have been wonderful on this. I get the feeling that if I hadn't brought it up and asked them to hold off, they would not have told me and would have installed over the mold without dealing with it. Once work started back up, they installed the floors very quickly and overall did a good job. However, that finishing thing became an issue again. After the final walk through, the temperature dropped quite a bit, and as the flooring contracted, I started to notice that the floor by the sliding glass door was unfinished. It's just open, unfinished wood ending at different points. So disappointing. So now we have to finish it ourselves. Not quite the overall quality and attention to detail that I was expecting with the stellar reviews for this company. I'm still undetermined as to whether I would use this company again. There were both positives and negatives to working with them. I hope they take the feedback that I gave them and tighten up some of their practices in communication and focusing on the details.
Description of Work: There were two projects that they performed. First, they tore out all of the old flooring in my downstairs common areas and installed tile in the kitchen, carpet in a bedroom closet, and engineered hardwood in the living room, breakfast nook and dining room. Second, they renovated the master bathroom. They removed the old shower, knocked out a wall, installed new shower hardware, installed Durock, tiled the shower and bath, built in an access, and coordinated with another company to install a seamless glass enclosure. All materials were not included in the price, and I was responsible to select and buy them separate from this contract.
Overall, it was fine. The price was reasonable, and to their credit we had many different jobs all being done at the same time. Trying to stay on top of it all was a massive challenge. I have to give them an average score based on the foreman's ability to effectively manage and multi-task our particular project. If the scope of work was small I believe they would have done fabulous. Management was responsive when their was a need to address issues. The company has a desire to get the job done correctly, but attention to detail of the contracted workers was lacking. As with any contracted work, the workers must be babysat to ensure the job is done correctly. I would not hire them again for a massive, multi-level project; but I would hire them for individual jobs. I have no complaints about the overall product because our house looks great.

The project lead- Barry was very patient with me and always came through on my many questions. Joe helped me many times with selections (man decorating is not my thing- but sure is Joe's!) Their roffing guys were unbelievable. I had the roof over my existing house redone at the same time as the roof over new addition and they were able to get it all done in a single day with only one short break. Amazing. The foundation brick color and siding color matched our existing house built back in 1988 perfectly. So perfectly that people cannot even tell the difference of where the new addition is!! Their own electrician (Riccardo) as well as the ones from Vega were the best I have ever dealt with and I will use them again and have recommended them to my neighbors as well. These folks at THI made me feel like I was their top priority even though they had many other jobs at the same time. Gene the owner, I met a few times, made me feel like I was part of their family. A great family owned business which we need more like them here. Thanks- look forward to doing business with you guys again someday.
Description of Work: Overall, Excellent job on a very large addition to our home. From design to final walk through the professionalism was top-notch. There were some issues with the framing from one of their sub contractors that weren't discovered until much later but they immediatly took action to resolve the issue. The design that Kenny did was not only functional (maximizing floor space) but truly artistic. We had a second garage/workshop built behind existing garage and then an office over half of the old garage and new (huge!!) Master suite of the rest of the old garage and extending back over the new garage/workshop.My wife felt the master-bath was like a luxurious spa experience whenever she comes home from a stressful day at work.

First of all a contract was signed & then the work began. The demolition went very smoothly. I think the tub was installed next & then the sheetrock. They came with the tile man to introduce him & they checked on his work often. Once the tile was done the other fixtures were installed. After everything was finished I did notice a problem, but the problem did not last long. They came right away & fixed the problem to our satifaction. They made sure that we were completely satisfied.

I am very pleased on how all repairs went. They repaired roof, told me why the roof was leaking and it had been leaking maybe from day 1, (because other company,) but now I shouldn't have any water coming in. The crew that worked on the roof were great guys, if I had any questions they would answer them. They were the one's to let me know I needed a new attic fan. Glad that they did so I wouldn't have any problems down the road. After the roof was good to go, they came in and replaced sheetrock and did the swirl on the dining room side, which they did a great job on that. Then finished with molding to which they had to match old molding and did a really good job at. Added the chimney cap so I wouldn't have birds come spring. Overall----Total Home Improvements is a great Company the people they have work for them are very nice, they always let me know what was going on and what was next to do. Everyone was really nice the guys for the roof, sheetrock guys, molding guy, The guy that kept me informed of what was next. Even the lady at the front desk at Total. The crew I had, They should be Crew of the Month, they were all really nice and would tell me that they do a job right the first time so that they don't have to come back. Bottom Line--If you want a job done right or thinking of adding space or re-doing a room big or small call Total Home Improvements I know you will be happy that you did. I am, and they are number 1 on my list and I will tell everyone the great job that they did. Oh we have had rain and I have no leaks.....Thanks Total.. Sorry I didn't give names of my crew but you know who you are. Thanks to the Crew.
Description of Work: We had a room added to our house in 1997. Well the Company we used, was well know had seen work done by them, family even used them and knew one of the owners......Well we had a rain storm we had around 12 in. of rain, well in our addition we saw mildrew come up over the walkway from dining room into room added. A friend had just had a room re-done and they told us about Total they were very pleased the crew and staff. I called them. Well lets say I had to pay for the first company's mess up------ Total said that they should have pitch the roof more and then after they took off shingles they saw they didn't have enough of the ice and water shield on the roof..Total came in and removed 500 sq ft of roof shingles on the reverse hip, added more ice and water shield (to which the other company didn't have enough on the roof--) They replace damaged sheetrock in den and molding. They also put a small hip on the back side of chimney to have the rain water flow from chimney, put on a chimney cap, replaced all new pipe collars and replaced an attic fan that had worn out.

Job started 4 days late, many days I was told people would be there and no one showed up, I had to constantly call them. They left the job site a mess everyday. The salesman was rude and condescending whenever he was told about problems going on. Was assured all appliances were dry fitted and measured but upon installation the grill and side burner gap was too big, and the height of the opening for the outdoor fridge was too short and it would not fit. All the pavers had to be removed and cut in 1/2 to fit the fridge in and now because of the obvious slope the fridge and front of the grill flood everytime it rains heavy. This has still not been resolved! the project ran 53 days late and never got issues resolved. It was a Total Home Disaster!

Response from Total Home Improvements
We will agree that there were a few issues during the process of this job. As for the job not starting on time, the start date in the contract was an approximate based on weather and finishing other jobs. We feel that 4 days is reasonable. As for the D rating on price, we feel that the value far exceeded the scope of work. This is a custom, masonry, outdoor kitchen with concrete countertops. Total Home Improvements has been in the remodeling industry for 25 years. We value our reputation and strive for quality on every job no matter how big or small and after hearing this customer’s concerns; we realized there were some issues between the Homeowner and Salesman. After careful consideration this particular Salesman no longer represents Total Home Improvements. The Owner of the company met with this Home Owner to try to resolve the issues. We were willing to do what it took to remedy the water issue, however, the Home Owner preferred to not pay the balance of $1200.00 and call it a day. We felt this compensation would be adequate to relay the pre-existing pavers. We thought this issue was resolved until after 2 years we were notified of this post by Angie’s List.

When the original decking was pulled up, we noticed some problems with the support structure. THI remedied the situation and went above and beyond to make sure the original section of the deck was secure and safe. The additional section that was added blended very well with the original section and looks very good. These guys are more than carpenters, they are craftsmen. The gable vents were covered and siding was installed where the vent used to be. Even though they were not able to find an exact match to the siding, it is nearly impossible to tell that the section was done later than the rest of the house. The front porch railing posts were repaired and improved to decrease the chance of wood rot at the bottom of the posts. All in all, they did a great job and I would highly recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: THI rebuilt and expanded our back deck, closed up gable vents in the attic and repaired/improved railing posts on the front porch.
