These folks are absolutely fabulous and deserve 4 gold stars! They showed up on time, worked quickly and did not leave a mess behind. Bill had provided me with a written estimate of time and materials that was dead on. Their prices are competitive and they didn't try to throw in any last minute surprises. Tyler is awesome, he really works hard for his money. I will definitely use Root again. Thanks!

See above. I received a $20 discount for being an Angie's List member.
Description of Work: Tyler from Root Electric replaced an old ceiling fan. He called ahead to notify me he was on his way. He was professional and very friendly. The work took 1.5 hours. He was thoughtful in that he cleaned up after his job and even took off his shoes to keep the floors clean.

They did a great job. The estimate was detailed and well-written. The work was completed precisely as stated in the estimate. They started when they said they would start, and they finsihed a little earlier than expected.

The project went well. Root electric is very professional and comfortable to work with. They sent out someone for an estimate, which was promptly sent to me via email. They were flexible in accomodating my schedule and arrived promptly and prepared. The installation in all areas were done with a high level of workmanship.

Another outstanding job performed by Root Electric. I needed a double switch installed in a bathroom to accommodate a ventilation fan that had been installed as part of a ?Solartube Daylighting System?. The Solartube installers are not licensed electricians and one look inside the existing switch box revealed that it was beyond my expertise to attempt to wire it. A review of Angie?s List electricians provided me Root Electric?s outstanding profile so I gave them a call. Mr. Root came by a few hours later and provided a very fair estimate which I accepted. Mr. Root completed the job in a very professional manner and to my complete satisfaction. I would not hesitate to use his firm again or recommend him to my friends and fellow Angie List subscribers.

We reached a point in the summer of 2009 where we couldn't reset the circuits. I placed a call to Root Electric and before making an appointment to come to the house, the gentleman I spoke with (I'm sorry, I don't remember his name now) said he would try to solve the problem over the phone. That worked.... for a while. The next time the curcuits blew, in September, I wasn't able to repeat the process described in the earlier phone call, so an appointment was scheduled. Apparently, all but 1 bathroom outlet was wired backwards. The same gentleman whom I spoke with on the phone rewired the outlets. We're now into March 2010 and haven't had a problem. Also, I purchased a lower wattage blow dryer just in case.
Description of Work: We've had problems with the GFI circuits in our bathrooms since we moved into the house in 2002. If the circuit went out, we first had to reset from the circuit box, then reset the outlet in every bathroom (4). Our house was built in 1977, so the circuits aren't wired to accommodate something like an 1875 watt blow dryer.

I was pleased from start to finish. Bil Jr came out to do the estimate and was very professional explained what was required to disconnect my baseboard heat (which was the biggest part of the job) was very through on the assessment of all the other work I needed done. The young man who came out to do the work was also very professional and effectly communicated what he was doing. I was extremely pleased with every aspect of the job and would certainly use Root Electric again !
Description of Work: Root installed an outdoor electrical outlet & blister cover, replaced a timer for a light and 1 switches, located the circuit breaker for this baseboard heat section circuit, terminated the wires for this circuit from the electrical panel, caped off and terminated all wires in the thermostat box insured proper termination of wires in each heat section location and replaced and restored power to and electrical outlet in one of the bedrooms.

The owner's son performed the estimate and was prompt and helpful; it was competitive with the other vendor estimates we received, although not the cheapest; and their estimate format was throughout and detailed enough to see the breakdown of costs (we liked that). We had some changes to the scope of work prior to signing the contract and that was not a problem. They accommodated our schedule and performed the work within the time-frames identified in the contract (3 days). The owner and one other person performed the work in a professional, yet friendly manner. They left our house clean after each work day. It was a pleasure working with them. We'd definitely hire them again!
Description of Work: New wall and appliance outlets, recessed lighting, and circuits for the kitchen; as well as recessed lights, outlets, and ceiling fan installations in the family room, and 2 bedrooms (fans only), and garage (outlets only). The lighting included new switches with dimmer capability. One of the fan installations included a remote control setup and a light kit.

Root had been very prompt and professional when i requested an estimate from them before. for reasons having nothing to do with them i had to select someone else for that job. when i needed the above work done i eagerly called root. i got another prompt professional response and a good estimate. they were busy but scheduled my job in less than 2 weeks. they showed up on time and completed the work in one day as they predicted. the work was done exactly as i had requested and we were very satisfied with the whole experience. i would readily use them again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

We spent $1500. They were very diligent about coming out and reviewing the job closely and itemized which we had. We had about 8 or 9 things and they also installed a ceiling fan. I thought the estimate was reasonable and detailed. They came on the day they said they would and finished the work on time. We have been generally satisfied with the work.

They were great. I think they were very careful and double checked everything which is good. I think their price was fine. I don't have any problems with their work. It was a problem that happened on a weekend so they couldn't come out till Monday. They didn't have emergency assistance but it wasn't an emergency necessarily, it was an inconvenience. I would use them again in future.

My husband has an electical background so he went through the house testing/upgrading everything to an avail. Called the power company, they came out and we were told that it was not an outside problem. Bill came out almost immediately and quickly helped us out, gave us suggestions and explained what the problem was (aluminum wiring coming into the house) and how to fix it. He called back later in the week to check on how things went--I was extemely impressed by the follow-up. Very professional and very approachable -something that I have not seen often since coming to Northern Virginia.
Description of Work: we were unable to run any of our 240 volt appliances (draining the power throughout sections of the house) and were at a complete loss as to the problem. The lights/power would come on but then slowly die out. We had no hot water, no refrigerator, no dryer and no stove. After several days of checking various things and having the power company coming out and telling us that it was not an outside problem we called Root Electric. Bill quickly came out and diagnosed the problem (outside aluminum power lines running to house). We then called the power company back out even though they still said the problem had to be indoors...........eventually it was fixed.

I was using a hand mixer and it set off one of the outlets that triggers when there is a short. We did not know that even though the outlet that I was using was not connected to a different outlet; they are all interconnected if one shorts. When it shorted, both of the outlets stopped working and dishwasher stopped working. So my husband opened it and started trying to fix it by cutting things he should not have cut, when all we had to do was reset the button. So we had to call them and they came in and fixed it.

Bill Root came out to give us an estimate on an electrical upgrade and lots of lighting improvements and was very nice and professional. Unfortunately, he failed to provide a cost estimate when promised and I had to call twice to get the estimate at all. The other electricians provided written estimates within 24 hours of their visits to the house - Bill Root took a week. We used another electrician for the work and I found it frustrating that Root's slow response meant that the work couldn't start in time to avoid having the work only half done over the Thanksgiving holiday.

We searched long and hard for someone to come in and do a recessed lighting job in our townhouse. I had several companies come out, everything from handymen to electricians and all of them either made the job seem way too simple or way too complicated. We we're almost at the point where we we're thinking of not doing the lighting at all for fear of how many issues we might run into. Root Electric was the last company I spoke with, Bill made the suggestion that we do a basic layout of what we we're looking for in each area and scheduled a time to come out the following week and walk the house with us. When Bill arrived he looked over each area and gave us a good overview of what type of lighting would work, where it would best be placed and how much lighting would be ideal. These guys make it obvious that they do this type of work routinely and their experience is one of the shining points of dealing with them. What had originally been spec'd as a job requiring 25 - 30 lights came out down to 17, Bill's statement: "If you want to feel like you?re living on a basketball court you put in that many lights, otherwise trust us you don't need that many". Not only we're his estimates dead on the lighting has completely transformed out living space. Root Electric created a proposal that broke down the work to be done and total cost by each area or room in the house, that way all we had to do was pick and choose what solutions/options worked best for us. Lastly when it came to installation, the crew arrived on time and made a seriously conscious effort to avoid putting holes in the ceiling when finalizing the grid/layout. They did the job quickly, cleanly and with great expertise. I had originally expected to need a drywall guy to come in a repair my ceilings but there was so little damage I was able to do the patching myself.
Description of Work: We needed 17 recessed lights installed in our kitchen, living room, dining room and foyer as well as an electric outlet and coaxial drop being relocate for TV Wall mount.

Great! He found the short quickly and fixed it. After seeing our flickering lights (not related to the short upstairs,) he advised me to call the local power company to check the exterior and street wiring since the interior breaker box was OK. That advice was perfect! The power company came out and ran new wires the same day. We'll be calling Root for all our break/fix and remodel needs. They were prompt, professional, and priced just right.

I called with two problems: external light fixture near the front door kept blowing out bulbs and needed a new outlet for a sump pump. When I spoke with Bill Root, he recommended I used a different type of bulb in the external light fixture and that solved the problem (so far...4 days). The person assigned to my work order arrived at the site early and was there before I arrived. Since the sump pump was located near the electric panel in an unfinished part of the basement, it was simple to install a new circuit breaker, wiring, and outlet. The whole process took 30 minutes (including paperwork and payment). The initial estimate was $185, but since I found the company on Angie's List, I received a $20 discount.

This is the second time that we have used Root Electric and we will always call them in the future! I have spoken wiht BIll Jr. about various things we wanted completed and he always repeated the work desired back to me aso that we were on the same page. When Bill Sr. was scheduled to perform the work he called when on his way and was incredibly friendly and yet efficient. They were honest when they told me that soemthing would or would not work. Bill Sr. arrived that day as scheduled and was done within 90 min. He was professional and polite. It was a pleasure to be able to communicate with someone who listened so well and went the extra mile to clarify or show me something. Finally, Bill always cleaned up after he was finished with the project. A company you can trust for honest, reliable serice!!!!!

I am extremely pleased with the work that Root Electric did. I let Bill in this morning and when I went back to the house to check after work everything was exactly how I hoped it would be. They cleaned up after themselves as well, so you wouldn't even know that anyone had been there doing work that day. The price was also very good in comparison to some other places I called. My second choice wanted $1000 more for the same job! Bill jr. came out and gave me an estimate a few weeks ago, and the final bill ended up being less than originally expected because they gave a discount for having all the lights installed. All in all, I highly recommend the company and I will definitely use them again the next time I need electrical work.
Description of Work: Installed 7 new recessed lights, moved cable and phone jack, switched out my old ceiling fan for a new one, replaced an old thermostat with a new one, replaced a hanging light with a recessed fixture, removed a chandelier, replaced two bulky recessed fixtures with more modern fixtures, took down track lighting we didn't want, fixed two switches that weren't working properly.

As part of a family room redecoration, I determined that recessed lights would improve the appearance of the room. Within days of my initial call to Root Electric, Bill Jr. came to my house for a free estimate. During his visit, I explained my objective and we discussed lighting design options to achieve that objective. I was sent an estimate and we scheduled the installation. The installation was completed by Bill Root Sr. and Bill Jr. The work was completed in a couple of hours and the room was left in immaculate condition. The layered lighting design of the room has signiticantly enhanced the look of the room and I could not be happier. I would definitely use Root Electric for future electrical work in my home and highly recommend them to others.

Response from Root Electric
Thank you very much for the report. This basement was a fun project to work on. She was replacing her furniture and re-working the layout of the basement. Our assignment, in this case, was to add additional recessed lighting to the basement to accommodate the new room layout, and also to keep it flexible in the event she wanted to re-arrange the room in the future. After considering the layout of the furniture, and the design of the house, we were able to install a lighting package that not only brightened the room, but highlighted her new furniture. This gave the room a "decorator" ambiance that can be found in design magazines. This project ran particularly smoothly. In her report, she mentioned that we were able to complete the installation "without any drywall repair". While this can be the case in many projects, it is more the exception rather than the rule. The amount of drywall repair needed is dependent upon the framing characteristics, and architectural design of your home. Her home was the ideal design for installing recessed lighting without drywall repair. However, we do employ several techniques that allow us to install recessed lights in any home with a minimal amount of drywall repair. These techniques include the use of "remodeler" rough-in housings, special fishing tools, and most importantly, careful attention to layout BEFORE installation of the lights. We always learn what is behind the drywall before we start cutting holes for the lights. As with the design of the home, these techniques do not guarantee the absence of drywall repair, but they can greatly minimize it. If you have any questions about lighting improvements for your home, please give us a call. We would be happy to discuss your ideas. Regards, The Root Electric Customer Service Team
