Work went extremely well with the only surprise being the installation of smoke detector in a room I had not wanted. When brought to the attention of the master electrician, it was relocated to a hall way that in original plan. In addition to the service originally requested the existing receptacles were checked for correct polarity and grounding and several were fixed at a slight additional cost. ( A mark of a true professional). I was pleased with prompt arrival of estimator the electrician and alerting me of when the inspector would arrive as well as having a representative present during the inspection.
Description of Work: installation of ceiling lights, wired smoke detectors and switches as well as cleaning up old wiring.

Bill Root III did the estimate. He answered all my questions satisfactorily, and he gave welcome suggestions on the project. His father, Bill Root, and Kyle did all of the inside work, which was finished in one day. Bill and Kyle didn't mind my watching them doing their work and asking questions along the way. Both of them seemed very skilled at their craft.
Description of Work: In the basement they did a rough-in for and installation of 9 customer supplied fluorescent light fixtures, and relocated 2 existing fixtures. Existing 2-gang switch was expanded to 4-gang switch. They did a rough-in for and installation of 4 GFCI protected outlet receptacles. This involved installing 3 metal, floor to ceiling struts. They also installed a kitchen flourescent light fixture and dining room chandelier. Later they installed 3 exterior light fixtures. Price included Prince William County Electrical Permit.

Response from Root Electric
Thank you for the kind report. This was a fun project to plan and complete. The customer has an unfinished basement that he uses as living and storage space. He does not plan on finishing the basement in the near future, but wants to increase the livability and utility of the space. We designed the lighting and outlets per the customer's specifications with an eye towards the possibility of the space being finished in the future either by the current homeowner or the next. Fluorescent lighting was employed to provide bright, efficient lighting. The outlets were constructed using steel pipe and uni-strut, bolted to the concrete floor and wood ceiling joists. Uni-strut and steel pipe is more commonly used in industrial settings and not found in homes. In this case, the Uni-strut and steel pipe allowed us to fabricate permanent outlet locations that could be removed without a trace if the customer would like to finish the basement in the future. This was a very unique project that challenged us to use the breadth of our knowledge in electrical installations to meet the customer's needs.

I will definitely continue to use him. The owner will call if you have questions. He bent over backwards to help me with the aluminum wiring. The advice he was giving me was to save me money. The second time was a service call and they figured out what it was. They let me know and told me what it was and said that I could save some money to do a couple of things on my own.
Description of Work: I used Root Electric twice. One time I was looking to buy a house and I had a lot of questions because I thought it had aluminum wiring in it. He talked to me on 3 different phone calls at no charge. The second time I had an electrical problem in another house. They did electrical wiring and GFCI outlets.

The technician arrived precisely on time and was quick to determine the problem. He installed the new fan and it works beautifully. The installation price was consistent with the telephone estimate and, I think, was very reasonable. I would definitely use this firm again for my electrical needs.

Arrived at promised time and quickly isolated faulty third receptacle which was interrupting down stream power to two other receptacles and back deck light. Electrician (Bill) replaced faulty part and checked out circuit and light. It was fast and professional service. Bill also gave "Angies List" coupon discount even though I forgot to ask for it. Root electric was great and I plan to call them for any furture electrical work I might need.

They came out and checked the attic fan. Although the fan was making a noise, they said it was still OK to operate but that its life was probably nearing its end. They gave us an estimate to replace the fan but we elected to wait till next year to do that. While he was here we asked for some advice relating to electrical upgrades in our bathroom. He spent time explaining things and looking at our wiring and gave us good information. He also gave us a contractor referral for our bathroom renovation. At the end of the visit we asked what we owed, and he said "Nothing". We were amazed since he came to our home for the service call to check out the fan. We will definitely use Root Electric when we replace the fan and for other electrical work. They were very friendly, knowledgeable and professional.

First a quick phone call to identify themselves, asking what needed to be done, and a convenient time to either stop by or receive a detailed instruction. Once we described the work, they provided an estimate and the rest was scheduling. The young man they sent was prompt, courteous, and finished on time. Great manners and great work.

Bill Root's outstanding service should be known by all.
Description of Work: I had a lemon of a new washing machine. I had been without a functioning washing machine sine June 2010. Many repairs. When the final repair was done, the technician told me there was no fault with the washing machine, that the problem was in my house electrical wiring. I called Bill Root for inspection of two electrical outlets. He did those and also thoroughly inspected my main electrical box. He could find no household wiring problems. When I attempted to pay him, he responded with NO CHARGE since he had not repaired anything. He displayed every means of superior customer service. Gave me a window of time in which he would come and called when he was on his way. A gentleman in every respect. He left me absolutely elated to know this fine quality practice still exists in today's world of dishonesty. I would recommend him to everyone.

Combined the electrical work for a hot tub with patio installation. Root Electric worked closely with the patio installer to ensure an extremely professional installation. Root Electric's electrician even went the extra mile of coming to our home on short notice and on his own time to hook-up the hot tub when it was delivered ahead of schedule two days prior to the 4th of July. Third time using Root Electric and we have never been disappointed...will use no one else in the future.

I was referred to them by a neighbor. They did a pretty good job. There were some things that were a little weird. There were some light boxes that they put in that they didn?t do a good job measuring and we had to move a couple of light boxes. We had to move a couple of switch boxes a little bit too. They weren?t super meticulous with their work. My husband had drawings of everything since he is an architect. They just came in and installed stuff. So there were a lot of things that weren?t in the right place. I have one incident where they gave me a time when they were going to come out and do some work. However, they didn?t show up when they were supposed to. Somebody was supposed to come in the next day and do something else that had to be done after the electrical work was done. So it would have been easy if they had finished the electrical work before that. The electrician said that he never told me that he was coming on that day when I called him and told me that he would be coming on the following Monday. I always take very copious notes when I am working with these people and I guess it was just a goof-up but I wasn?t very happy. However, they were on time when they were here the first time and were on time even when they came to finish up. So there was once in the middle when there was a no show. It was a very long time until the main electrical panel was replaced but I wasn?t sure as to why that happened. I don?t know if they weren?t very aggressive about getting that work done. Everything was done and works well. I received many estimates and their price was very compatible with the others from whom I had got estimates. So I think their price was good. There was also another issue since I wanted a specific type of dimmer switch and they had four weeks before they started the job to get that. They then came but they didn?t have the type of dimmer switch that I wanted and we ended up ordering them online. We gave it to them even though we had already paid for the ones that they used. I just didn?t feel like they paid good attention to detail and they seemed to hurry rather than being meticulous in their work. I wouldn?t use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Root Electric in September of 2009 for electrical work. They did a service upgrade and rewired the kitchen. They loosened existing service drop and meter base. They installed new meter base in the same location as the old meter base. They installed one 200 amp remote disconnect next to the meter base and new 4/0 SER cable through the crawl space to the location of the electrical panel. They replaced the existing grounding and bonding system to include new cold water bond wire and supplemental ground rods. They worked with the power company to facilitate service change. They replaced the existing service cable. They removed the existing electrical panel and backboard. They installed new pressure-treated backboard with new electrical panel, circuit breakers and hardware. They also did kitchen rewiring and lighting installation work. They installed two new 20 amp kitchen countertop circuits with GFCI protection, four additional countertop outlets, one new 50 amp circuit for oven/range unit, one new 20 amp feed for refrigerator, one new 20 amp feed for dishwasher, one new 15 amp feed for the lighting circuit, one new 15 amp feed for the disposal, and one new 15 amp feed for the range hood. They installed 10 customer supplied recessed light fixtures, two new switch locations for recessed lights, 6 customer supplied under-cabinet lights, and one new switch location. They re-routed and terminated existing kitchen lighting. They installed one customer supplied light fixture in the entrance area near the back door. They removed the existing rear door switch box. They reinstalled two new switch locations; one to control entrance area light and one to control the door light. They installed two new switch locations over the sink rough-in and one pendant fixture over the sink to be controlled by one new switch location.

Three cheers for Root Electric! Mr. Root is an amazing owner, he responds to messages promptly. He takes the time to talk about all concerns and advises what he thinks needs to be done along with a right on the mark estimate. Tyler was the technician for this job and he is actually coming back this week to do some additional work. He arrived on time. He was extremely competent and took the time to explain how things worked. Tyler needed to negotiate a large ladder through the house and he took a great deal of care in doing so. These folks have to be one of the finest vendors in the entire area! AND they took our coupon!

I became aware of a potential electrical issue during the course of having some plumbing work done. Two water pipes created a spark when touched together. The electrical system was grounded through water pipes, rather than having separate grounding rods (as used to be common practices.) A second problem was that the house had a Federal Pacific brand electrical panel, a type that was commonly installed 30 years ago in houses in this area, but which is now considered to be a potential safety risk. I got multiple proposals to replace the panel and install grounding rods. Root Electric's proposal was the best, as well as lowest cost. Bill Root, Jr, did a great job of explaining the risks and options, and I gladly accepted his work proposal. Everyone I talked with from Root Electric was clear, courteous, prompt, and professional. They came when they said they would, did an excellent job, and kept me informed of all the steps, including final sign-off by the Prince William County inspector. I have nothing but good things to say about Root Electric and their staff. I would do business with them again in a heartbeat, if I needed more electrical work.

After the lights in the basement mysteriously went out I called Root Electric. They returned my call promptly and scheduled the work within a few days. They were worth the short wait. I got a call saying the electrician was on the way, right at the start of the window they gave me. He got right to work, located the problem in the remotely placed ground fault which needed tightening, explained everything to me in detail, and the lights were back on in no time at all. The electrician was very nice and polite. He even reminded me that I had a coupon because I mentioned Angie's List on the phone. All around great experience and I'd call them again in a heartbeat. Thanks!

After having several electrical projects accrue I finally called someone in to take care of them. Based upon their Angie's List rating and proximity to our home I called Root Electric. They responded quickly in setting up an appointment to assess the projects and provide an estimate. Although electrical work is expensive, their estimate was reasonable and professional in its thoroughness. We accepted their proposal and arranged a date for them to do the work. From estimate to starting the job was several days--very timely. On the day of the job they were running 40 minutes late but had called well before the scheduled time to let us know and coordinate the change--which we appreciated. They completed two of the tasks (outdoor outlet install and under-cabinet lighting install), assessed the utility shed and provided an estimate to fix that at a future date and after assessing the indoor outlet fully, determined the location wasn't suitable for the install. With all four tasks were very happy with their professionalism--they did the appropriate jobs well and for the ones that weren't viable they let us know rather than perform marginal or unsafe work and then charge us for it. Definitely would work with them again.
Description of Work: We had several electric projects that needed to be done--install an electrical outlet outside, install an electrical outlet inside, install under-cabinet lighting and assess the loss of power to an out-building utility shed.

It went very well. I have used other electricians from Angie's List and I have decided to stick with this one.
Description of Work: The man arrived a few minutes early. The price quoted was $125 to change a dining room chandelier. I had a $20 coupon from this month's Angie's List magazine and it was honored. He did the work in a timely fashion. He needed to replace the supports for the chandelier. He showed me the old pieces and showed me the new pieces and said they were needed because the new chandelier was replacing a builder's model. I agreed- the old fixture was much lighter. The final charge came to the quoted price, counting my coupon.

The president of the company came out to provide a free estimate. He put everything in writing, to include what they would and would not do. They even were able to come and perform the work the very next day. They were prompt, courteous and neat - they even used our vacuum to clean up the kitchen after they did repair work on the recessed lights. They had a second person come out to help with the lights to help get things done quicker as well. They were both wonderful, polite and very friendly. They also explained everything in detail and ended up charging us the low end of the range provided on the estimate. I would recommend them to all our friends.
Description of Work: They fixed a ceiling fan switch that was installed incorrectly, and fixed the main electrical wiring for recessed lighting, which also required going into the attic to get the job done.

Response from Root Electric
Thank you very much for the kind review. To dispel any rumors, the person who gave you the estimate was actually the Vice-President. The President of Root Electric manages and is actively involved in the delivery of our services once a proposal has been accepted. Our management team keeps a "hands on" approach to our business process. One note about our proposals. We provide very detailed proposals so that our clients know exactly what service they are purchasing, and also so that our electricians know exactly what type of work they are to perform. This keeps our jobs running smoothly by limiting miscommunication between our staff and our client. Thank you again for the very kind report. Bill Root
