Root Electric

It went very well. We paid less than the original estimate, because the job went faster than expected in several areas. They quickly found the problems, and got everything done quickly. I have heard of friends of mine having horror stories with other electricians (hundreds of dollars for less than an hour of work), so I'm glad we found these guys.

Electrician showed up. I showed him where to hang light fixture. He actually hung it too low. I didn't notice at time of work--I had drawn a line in pencil and told him fixture had to go above that line. He put it below line, and when I went to put up medicine cabinet and mirror I couldn't hang them because light was too low. So, I called the company back. Electrician came out again and redid the wiring. did not charge me anything extra (it was their mistake, but I felt I should have maybe supervised better). Very prompt response on fixing the error. I would definitely use them again. They were also prompt and professional to deal with.

We were very happy with the services provided and would definitely work with them again in the future.

Feb, 2012: Mr Root and his team once again delivered. His team showed up on time, did all the necessary work, cleaned up and were done 2 hours early! Everyone was professional and courteous. I HIGHLY recommend Root Electric. 10/29/12: During a storm water started to drip from the circuit breaker box in the basement. After calling the message service Mr. Root promptly returned my call and stated he would be able to fit me in. He called when he was on his way, was very professional and friendly. Mr. Root checked the box, proceeded to dry the box out and then went out in the storm to seal up any intrusion points in the meter box outside. He continued to wipe up any water in the box and then stayed until the dripping stopped. He left "after care" instructions and informed me that I probably didn't need to replace the box but Root Electric would be happy to do an estimate for replacement. I didn't feel any pressure to make an appointment or buy any additional services. This was my first time using Angie's List and I am glad I did.

From scheduling to completion the service from Root Electric was excellent. I have a difficult schedule to find time to be at home for services and we were able to find a perfect time for them to come out to install two ceiling fans and check a faulty outlet. The electrician arrived a little late, but I received a phone call from Bill letting me know the electrician was still at another job and would be at my house soon. When the electrician arrived, he began work immediately installing the fans and new switches. Two other electricians then arrived to help and the work was completed quickly and efficiently. This is the second time I have had a service from Root Electric and I will definitely use them in the future for any other jobs I may have.

I contacted Root Electric through Angie's List in February 2012. Bill Root, Jr. came out to evaluate my project. Bill suggested a few alternatives for running the rigid PVC conduit. I settled on Bill's suggestion to run the conduit up and over the area to avoid any tripping hazards - certainly the correct idea, but not one that any other companies had recommended. Bill even answered some of my questions on other unrelated electrical projects. Two days later, he emailed the proposal - not the lowest price, but not an unexpected price. I was quite impressed by Bill's professionalism and knowledge and that was why I accepted the bid. Bill kept in contact over the next couple of weeks as they handled the county permit process. My B rating stems from the [first] day of the actual work. John arrived almost an hour early (which doesn't deserve a dock on the punctuality rating, although I wonder if the day would have gone more smoothly if I hadn't been groggy). Although everything worked out in the end - and perhaps it was just a bad day - but there were four things I wish had gone a little differently: 1 - Upon reviewing the proposal, John said that he'd have done it a different way (the way that created a tripping hazard). I wouldn't detract from my rating for this, but it struck me as odd. Here, he inadvertently lumped himself into the "everyone else" category instead of the "Bill" category. 2 - I know I hired an electrical service provider and I'm quoting a carpentry proverb, but I wish we'd followed the measure twice, cut once proverb. When drilling the hole for the conduit in the side of my [brand-new] spa, the original hole was a few inches too low, so now I have two holes in the side of my [no longer brand-new] spa - one for the conduit, and the other filled with plumber's putty. I've more or less gotten over it, but I'm kicking myself because that was something I could have caught as it happened. 3 - As he got to the point of completing the wiring in the spa control box, John seemed to get a little more hurried. Perhaps it was because I was looking over his shoulder. As an example of the hurriedness, as he was connecting the ground wire to the control box, I mentioned that, originally, the ground wire had passed into the control box with all the other wires and connected on the inside. Right as I said it, John cut the wire and connected it to the outside of the control box, saying it was okay to do that. My B rating for quality stems from the quality of the original work. 4 - When the wiring was complete and we turned on the power, the breaker in the spa box tripped immediately. After a little bit of troubleshooting, John insisted that the problem was with the spa and not the wiring. I made a frantic call to my spa dealer, who (naturally) insisted that the problem was the wiring and suggested I ensure ground and neutral were not shorted because "the neutral is hot." I relayed this information (and probably my frustration) to John, who again insisted that the wiring was correct, showing me on voltages from ground to each leg, leg to leg, and ground to neutral. I'm not an electrician, so the voltages made sense to me and so I called the spa manufacturer. The manufacturer provided the exact same explanation as the spa dealer: it was a 4-wire spa and ground and neutral cannot be shorted. Eventually, John contacted Bill (Sr., I think), who walked through the steps to properly wire the 4-wire spa (In my understanding, the spa box comes configured for a 3-wire spa, shorting the ground and neutral buses. A 4-wire spa uses the neutral wire for 120V components and therefore, we can't short the ground and neutral). John left once we confirmed that everything was working as expected. My B rating for professionalism stems from what appeared to be a loss of composure and lapse in knowledge. My frustration continued upon inspection. Immediately upon seeing the control box wiring, the county inspector said, "You can't do that," in reference to the wiring outside the control box, and failed the inspection. After I made another frantic call, Bill (Sr.) arrived the next non-rainy day to inspect and correct the problem. Although I was still rather panicky at that point, Bill was calm, friendly, and personable. He admitted that "John should have known better," and extended the flexible conduit so that all connections were inside the control box. Inspection failed again when the inspector noticed that an existing 120V outlet was too close to the spa. This was something that should probably have been in the original proposal, but Bill Sr. returned yet again to correct the problem. My overall rating is a B. Although everyone wishes everything had gone perfectly, it didn't. It might have just been a bad day, but that's the day that affected me. However, while I'd be reluctant to hire John again, I would recommend Bill Jr. and Bill Sr. I'm pleased with my experience during the proposal process and I'm glad that Root Electric took steps to make it right.

Very well. No definite cause found, but problem has not resurfaced. Bill was professional, and willing to explore a number of potential causes.

I first called for an appointment was received a prompt return call. An appointment was set up for a day and time that was good for me. Bill root showed up on time and was very professional. He walked me through every issue I wanted to discuss. He took the time to explain to me about replacing the electrical panel. He also took notes and pictures of all other work I wanted done. I received an estimate a few days later complete with sections outlining each category on my list and complete with diagrams of recessed lights. An appointment was made for the installation. I even got an email with a google invite so I could easily add it to my calendar. About 5 days before the start of the job I changed the order due to personal reasons and bill was fabulous and understanding. They arrived promptly for the job and completed everything in about 5 hours. The communication, workmanship, and entire process from first phone call to install was amazing. I was very comfortable with the workers in my house and they cleaned up everything nicely. My husband was a contractor and this company went beyond my high expectations.

It went very well except that the electrician arrived an hour early!

They showed up on time and were able to identify and fix the problem. Later, I was able speak with the person who performed the work, and he explained in detail what they did. I thought their professionalism was quite good.

I called Root Electric after reading their reviews on Angie's List. We had received one other estimate for the work which was a little high, but that company was not on Angie's List, so I went with Root. Bill Root arrived on time to provide the estimate. He called prior to his arrival to confirm he was en route and conducted the estimate very efficiently. He followed up with an email that detailed the estimate. Since their rates were very reasonable, I requested an additional fan be added to the job list and Bill updated the proposal and we scheduled an appointment. On the date of service, the technicians, whom Bill had named in his email to me, showed up promptly. We surveyed the work to be done and they started the job. The fan in the second story foyer required that they build scaffolding. They constructed the enormous scaffolding in record time and split up the remaining work between them. After the work was completed, they walked around with me to look over the new fans and electrical work to make sure I was completely satisfied. Root did a wonderful job and I would definitely have them perform work in the future.

toWe had several long term unconnected light electrical issues. These included installation of a replacement overhead light in a laundry room with high ceilings, troubleshooting a bad circuit in the basement and finding some pesky wires that dropped behind the all from a second floor alarm station. I obtained four estimates, all from A rated services. Root Electric was actually one of the higher cost options. However, Bill's professionalism in our initial conversation caused me to select Root over the lower cost services. The service itself was impeccable, on time, personable and professional in all regards. All work was completed except for recovering the wires which we agreed to defer to a later visit. Although the work was simple, our experience with Root Electric will bring us back for future electrical services.

We used Root Electric several years ago and were happy with the experience so we contacted them again. The owner was very responsive and was able to schedule a time to address several small problems around the house for a very reasonable price. The technician, Andrew, showed up on time and was very courteous and professional. He completed all the items quickly while answering all of my questions. He even thought of a possible diagnoses for a light fixture problem that saved us a lot of time and money. Thanks to Root Electric for another great experience! We would definitely use them again and recommend them to our friends.

I selected Root Electric based on the reviews that I read on Angie's list. The young man that was sent to do the job was very nice and professional. He did a great job installing the light fixture. However, he wanted to charge more than what was quoted to me when I scheduled the appointment. I told him what Mr. Root had quoted to me so he called Mr. Root and Mr. Root honored his quoted price to me - commitment and honesty is very powerful. I would use them again and recommend them to others..

Root Electric did a fantastic job! We just bought a new home that needed some electrical upgrading and we are very pleased with the work Root did for us. They showed up on time, were very clean and professional. They came out and did a physical estimate due to the amount of work needed and were very flexible in allowing us to provide our own lighting fixtures and supplies (if we wanted). We would (and will) definitely hire them again.

I called Root Electric and described the work I wanted done and was told that I would get a call back with a quote. Within a few hours, I had a quote for the work and an appointment. Electrician was prompt and professional. Installed the outside fixtures and pointed out to me that one had a flaw which I should have replaced. He also replaced a fluorescent fixture in the kitchen with pendent lights. The old lighting was not centered over the island so the new lighting needed to be installed and centered. Excellent work.

They were fabulous. My husband and I had tried to install the lights and they didn't work so we called them. I was actually at work and my husband was at home. They were super nice to my husband. He had installed this brand new ceiling fan in our bedroom. It was great and he had done everything correctly but it didn't seem to want to run. They took a look at his work and told him that he had done a great job. Then they took a look at the remote that came with it. They told him to go get a new battery for the remote because they thought that was the problem. My husband said that they could have been so condescending and mean to him but they were so nice. It was the battery. He went to the local store, got a new battery and installed it, and it worked perfectly. They were great. My husband had nothing but great things to say when I came home from work. He said that I found a good one. We would absolutely use them again.

We first contracted with Angie's List to use Beacon Electric, who also got straight As on Angie's List, for their $320 attic fan "special." It might have been a good deal, and really special, but wasn't for us since I couldn't get the company to call me back until I called Angie's List to complain and spoke with Brett, canceling the order. Brett apologized, and credited my card back for the $320 charge, then sent me a list of other Angie's List companies that could do the work. I picked Root Electric, mostly because we used to live in Woodbridge, and I like supporting my old 'hood, even though it was going to cost quite a bit more than the other company's "special." It doesn't do any good to save $145 on a job if you can't even get them to call you back, right? In contrast, Mr. Root called me back THAT SAME AFTERNOON, and we set up an install date for the following week. He explained that this was a bit more expensive because the attic fan that he uses, which he also uses in his own home, has a 10 year guarantee with it. He was a very nice man, and I immediately felt comfortable with his explanation, and I don't mind spending a little more if it keeps the gable fan working another 10 years. The appointment was set up for between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Our installer, named Andrew, rang the doorbell at 1:04 p.m. He was a very nice, polite young man, and mentioned that we had a lot of bird nest debris in the attic, but that it looked like it was mostly outside the gable screen, and had just fallen through to the inside. This is a company that knows what customer service means...I would gladly use their services again, and I highly recommend them to others. Use them and you, too, will "ROOT" for them!! Hahaha!! Sorry, I couldn't resist that...but it's really true!!! Update: On July 12, 2013 My husband said the attic fan wasn't working. He said as hot as it had been, it should be kicking on, but it wasn't. He thought some critter had chewed through the electrical wires or something, since the circuit breakers hadn't been tripped. I called and explained the problem to Mr. Root (he himself called me back after I had left the answering service a message) and he said he will come by sometime on the 17th, since I would be working from home that day. He came, as promised, and found that there was nothing wrong with the attic fan, but that our attic wasn't as hot as most attics, and the fan just hadn't kicked on yet. He turned down the thermostat and it came on just fine. I said, "Thank you so much!! How much do I owe you?" He actually said, "Nothing. I am glad it wasn't anything really wrong." What a nice nice man...how often do you EVER get someone in this area to do even the smallest thing for nothing?? Oh, right...NEVER!!! I told my husband, and he said, "Wow!! That was really nice. And now that I know, I'll remember to check that first if this happens again." He said, and I concur, that Mr. Root's company has our gratitude and loyalty for life!!

The technician showed up on time. He took the exact amount of time that was estimated and did an excellent job. 2 of the fans were installed where there was no existing light fixture and 1 was installed where there was only a ceiling lamp in place. They also replaced the existing light switches with dimmers for the fan and light. We provided the fans and switches but they provided the fan box and brace as well as any additional wiring. Their price was a great deal compared to other estimates we received.

I had my electrical box upgraded in 2006. That electrician did a terrible job. (Can't remember name.) I started having trouble with my A/C unit due to a bad breaker which led to the discovery of more problems in the electrical box. I called Root Electric last Friday and they got someone out Monday morning. They found lots of loose wires and several bad breakers or breakers that weren't made to be used with the panel. They seemed very honest and did a great job.

The Root electrician was on time and very genial. He quickly identified the problem and fixed it. Since it was just a breaker that needed to be reset he did not charge the full price for the service call and showed us how to reset the breaker in the future should it happen again.

Root Electric was professional and nice and gave me a good quote. Then he said he'd call me at the end of the month when he had more work in my area and he never did. So I have to call him again. He did call me in the past when he said he would and apologized.

Punctual, knowledgeable, great to work with. I'm very handy around the house with other things, but electricity is something I don't fool around with. Complete trust in them.
