American Plumbing more than met our expectations. They were recommended to us by several people in our townhouse community who had used them for their plastic waterline service replacement. They were quick to respond to my initial phone call and came out the following day for the estimate. It was clear from day one that this was a professional group (took shoes off before coming in) and told us exactly what needed to be done. Our waterline replacement required them to dig a hole near the water service connection in the sidewalk and another near the house where they had to drill into the basement. When I came home from work the next day I fully expected to have to clean up a moderate amount of mess and replant grass in the yard. Much to my surprise I could hardly tell they had been there. The (required) county inspection went flawlessly and we couldn't be happier with our choice!
Description of Work: We live in a Alexandria townhouse that was built with polybutylene (plastic) waterline service to the house. This type of pipe is almost guaranteed to fail in time causing significant damage to home or property. Per our neighbors recommendation we contacted American Plumbing who specializes in this type of waterline replacement. For our replacement, they dug a hole near the service manhole in the sidewalk and another near our house where the waterline enters. They turned off the water to the house and drained all the faucets. Next they disconnected the polybutylene pipe in the manhole. For the new copper waterline, they drilled a hole in our basement wall approx. 1-2 inches and fed the new copper line through it. They connected the new copper line at the existing service manhole. Finally they filled in the gap around the pipe and our wall with a paintable cement like product. The whole process took less than 3 hrs. All the holes were left uncovered for the night. The next day a county inspector came to check the work...which passed with no problems. About 2 hrs after the inspector left, American Plumbing returned and filled in the holes and replace the grass pieces they had carefully removed. You can hardly tell they were even there.

I was very pleased with American Plumbing. Their "bore" method caused minimal impact to my yard and home and was completed in a timely and professional manner. I would highly recommend American Plumbing to others to have a water leak outside the home. I would definitely use American plumbing again in the future.
Description of Work: American plumbing replaced my water main in order to repair a leak. They were able to bore under my yard, walkway and trees/plants without causing any long term damage. In addition, American plumbing repaired the feed to my irrigation system at no additional cost to me.

We moved into our house this summer and our first water bill pointed to something seriously amiss with our water service line. After confirming that there was a break in the main water line between house and the street, we began the journey of talking with various plumbing companies about how they would handle the repair. We were concerned about pursuing the method of drawing a new pipe through the old pipe method, and the assumption was that our 1963 house most likely had a copper pipe, thus making that method not available to us anyway. After talking with two large local plumbing companies, both recommended a more intensive and expensive directional boring method that would require going very deep and come up vertically through the pad foundation of our house. (Necessary because of the water used in this boring method). This would have caused more disruption to our yard and also in the basement room to establish a new connection point to the house plumbing since it would come in at a completely different location from where old pipe came through. It would also take 3 days to complete. Quotes for this method ran over $7,000. It was then that we signed on to Angie's List, and read the reviews for American Plumbing. We were encouraged to know that they handle all the water line replacements for those with Dominion Va Power's insurance program for water line replacement. This company only does this kind of work and was well rated. Dan called us back right away, came quickly to look at our job and provided an estimate in just a short amount of time. He explained that the deep-down directional boring method was not required. That a new pipe could be brought in at a depth of about 4' below the surface. They would make only 3 small holes in the yard to thread the pipe through, and then bring it in the foundation wall of the basement, bringing new pipe in roughly close to where old pipe came in, thus making all the new connections quite easy to reestablish (less disruption to room). He very clearly explained their procedure, answered all our questions, and was knowledgeable and professional. Because they are quite busy, it took a few days to fit us in, but they came precisely when promised and finished the job in 1/2 day. They left holes open for the county inspector, then returned promptly as promised to refill holes and leave the yard looking nearly untouched. We were very grateful to learn of American Plumbing and would heartily recommend them to anyone needing to do this kind of repair. Their final quote just a little over half what the other companies wanted. Their crew was very efficient, courteous, and professional. Look no further.... if you have this kind of repair work to schedule, call this company.
Description of Work: Our main water service line was ruptured and needed complete replacement. American Plumbing did this work for us in 1/2 day.

Overall, they did a fine job replacing the waterlineto my house. They were very professional and knew what they were doing. I was really happy to have the water stop running in my basement. The house seems cleaner and quieter. They performed the service that they were hired to do at the price provided in the estimate.
Description of Work: American Plumbing replaced the water line to my house. In my basement, there was a large puddle for six months and I did not know where the water was coming from. There was constantly water running into the basement and draining out. There was a steady gurgling sound that could be heard upstairs. They did an excellent job installing a new waterline to my house. It was a major job. They dug two holes in the yard to get to the waterpipe. They did no damage to the basement of my house. They replaced the water pipe in half a day. The running water in the basement has stopped and there is no longer a large puddle. They did an excellent job. The house is much quieter and the water is not running into the basement.

There are a very limited number of local companies that replace outside water lines. These guys are the A team! I received quotes from about 4 other contractors (obtained from AL). I had the greatest comfort with Dan and his team. In fact, one of the other bidders would have subcontracted out a major part of the job to American Plumbing! They were able to dig a limited number of deep but small footprint holes in my yard which they promptly refilled at the end of the job. In addition, they were able to require very limited opening of the interior of my finished basement wall where they installed the new shut-off valve. Other bidders talked like they would open the entire wall!

I was notified by Fairfax Water that the water lateral to my residence (the pipe from the meter into my unit) had a leak. After receiving estimates from several different contractors, I decided on American Plumbing due to their experience with this specific type of repair, price, and technique of replacement. All the other estimates I received were 1.) equal to or higher in price, and 2.) required much more excavation than American planned on doing. They were able to simply pull a brand new copper line in behind the old blue poly (the stuff is TERRIBLE) line that was previously there. They dug around the meter access point in the ground outside, and cut a small hole in the drywall around the main shutoff inside my unit. They then pulled the new line in, attached/sealed it, tested it, cleaned up, and turned on the water, all in approximately 2 hours. The only evidence they were there is the small section of drywall they had to cut, which is no big deal to replace. I hated having to spend a bunch of money on this, but it was going to be necessary at some point to get that blue poly out of there, and I couldn't be happier with the work they did. Their work has a 10 year guarantee as well. I highly recommend them!

American contacted me on the same day I filed the claim. Dan came out to look at the job and I was immediately inspired with his confidence. He told me what he would try to do, how they would do it, and explained that there would a nominal charge for superior materials (extra thickness copper line) and why. The crew showed up on the appointed day/time and were on site for about two hours. They replaced my water line all the way to the street without disturbing the lawn or driveway that was above the line. Even though Dominion Electric chose (and paid for, mostly) the plumber for me.....I would certainly use them again. They were courteous, hard-working, and professional. They really live up to their name.....American Plumbing.
Description of Work: American Plumbing contracts with Dominion Electric Company providing services for claims on Dominion's water line replacement insurance. They restored about 65 feet of water line by pulling new copper line from the basement to the street through the existing service line to the street. They also installed a new ball valve to replace the aging gate valve where the water service enters the home and patched the hole in the wall that they had to make for access the to the water line.

After discovering I had a leak in my main water line I contacted at least 6 plumbers/contractors to come give me estimates. At the end of the day I chose American Plumbing because of the approach they were going to take and all the reviews I had read on their previous work. On the day of the installation the crew was on time and very professional. Three holes were dug in my yard and the line was installed in 4 hours. The next day the county approved the work and the team came back immediately and filled in all the holes. They saved my plants and even the sod from where the holes were dug, so you can barely tell I had any work done. An added bonus to this they were the lowest price estimate i received.

Great service from start to finish! I called for an estimate and they were at our house in an hour, gave an estimate and started the job the next day! We especially appreciated the can-do attitude of all members of the company (particularly Dan and Brian) and their attention to detail. You can hardly tell they were ever in my yard or house. All grass and bushes were returned to their place and they even cleaned up the carpet. Along the way they answered numerous questions from both of us and never seemed too busy to give us an answer we could understand. For those who quality for their senior discount, they live up to that promise too! Thank you American Plumbing for a job well done. You will be our plumber of choice for anything we need in the future.

They did a fantastic job! I gave them a call Saturday night when I discovered the leak (when I got a huge water bill and then went out to the meter and saw it was running at 1 gallon a minute, even though every faucet in the house was off and nothing was leaking). Dan came out on Sunday to give me an estimate I called few other places to come out and get an estimate and the lowest one I got was $200 less than American Plumbing. However, I felt much more confident about the job American Plumbing could do (you'll see how much more professional they are when they come out to do the estimate than other companies), so I asked if they could match the price. They did, so we went with them. Miss Utility came and marked the area on Tuesday and Dan, Brian, and their work crew came and did the work on Thursday. It took a couple of more days for the county water inspector to come out and sign off, but that was it! Some of the other companies wanted to tear up my yard, but with their method the only made 3 holes in the yard, which they promptly filled back up after the county inspector signed off. I'm quite thankful about the minimal invasiveness of their technique. No hassles, no fuss, quick, honest, and good service. Highly recommended!
Description of Work: I had an old underground PB pipe (blue pipe) from the municipal water supply to my single family home that had developed a leak and needed to be replaced. They replaced it with a much more durable copper piping for a distance of about 65 feet.

American plumbing came out promptly when we called them, gave us a fair estimate, and did the repair immediately after Miss Utility marked the area. Overall we were very satisfied.
Description of Work: We had a leak in the water pipe that brings water from the service main to our house. Fairfax Water confirmed the leak, but it was on our side of the water main and our responsibility to repair. American Plumbing came out, dug up the line to see the extent of the leak, determined that the only a section of the pipe needed to be replaced, and did the repair after Miss Utility marked the area.

I came home Wednesday to find a note from the County telling me that my water had been turned off. Turns out the water main had broken (between the house and the street). I called Brian and Dan on a referral. Dan came out Thursday, scoped out the situation and called me to tell me the options. He thought the leak was near the meter so it might be possible to do a quick fix for $1400, the other option being a full repair and replacement of the polybutylene with copper. This is a known problem in our small development so I opted to have the full repair done.Dan and Brian and their crew showed up Friday afternoon as promised and on time, got to work and had the repair done and my water back on in less than 90 minutes. But for the markings made prior to their arrival by "Miss Utility", you wouldn't know the repair had been done. The crew was courteous, professional and even took their work boots off when they had to go into the house. I have a 10 year warranty for this work. Payment is by check only. Dan told me I could drop one in the mail to him (surprisingly) but I paid him upon completion. As he left, Dan told me he would notify the County that the work had been done. A+++ for this company.

On August 26, I found out the leak in front of my porch. I called the fairfax water emergency line the they send out the tech and confirmed the leak from the main water line. I got the hint from the tech, then started look up contractors they can do the job. First, I called American Plumbing Inc, 10 minutes later Dan called me back the came over the to check out and gave an estimate. I had 3 more contractors came over the same day, one of them was very honest to spend 30 minute to discuss the problem and said they can not do the job and recommended me to looking the contractor that they have special equipment can do the job. The other two came at the same time, both of them were layout the job like a big project. They wanted to ditch my yard to run the new line, the break up my floor in the basement where the old water service comes into home. In the contract said " Customer responsible for the re-install the carpet and drywall. It was sound like there is additional cost I have to spend after the job done. The quote the gave me was very competitive to each other, but still very high compare to American Plumbing Inc. I decided to go with American Plumbing Inc on September 6. The team came early about 8:30 AM. They were very confident on the job. They dug only 2 holes, one at the meter at the curbside, and the other in front of my porch. They pulled the new pipe into the old pipe and made the connection inside. The job was done in couple hours and was very clean and neat. Overall, I was very pleased with their job. Thanks again.

I called for estimates on a Saturday, and they came out Sunday morning to give me one. Monday, I got two other estimates that were lower. When I told them the lowest estimate, they reduced their price as they said they would so that theirs was the lowest by about $250. Since this is all they do, and they are a Dominion Virginia Power contractor and I heard they hire good ones, and they sounded the most knowledgeable and professional, I wanted to hire them all along. Plus, they give a 10-year warrantee on their work. The other two I spoke to give only 5-year warrantees. Three days later, it was done. We left the side door unlocked and they came while we were at work. (They needed access to the house to shut off the water and then turn it back on.) When my kids got home from school, it was all done and they couldn't tell anyone had been there. It worked out really well.

THE JOB WAS COMPLETED QUICKLY AND PROFESSIONALLY. THE PIPE THAT THEY COULD NOT PULL OUT [ PULLING THE NEW PIPE WITH IT] THEY TUNNELED UNDER USING A COMPRESSED AIR DRIVEN "MOLE". THEN CONNECTED TO THE HOUSE AND METER.

They were fantastic. They've got many years of experience behind them. They've been doing it since they were kids. I think that is all they do, so they specialize in it. They were very professional and were wonderful to deal with. They were quick and efficient, and they explained everything they were doing. We've had no problems since. Their estimate was based on each individual job. This is the kind of work we don’t have done a lot, so it is hard to compare it with other providers. It is a problem we have no control over. They guaranteed their work for up to 10 years or so, but I forget the actual time period. We would use them again in the future if necessary.

I was very pleased with American Plumbing's work. They use a process whereby they feed the new copper line through the old polybutyl supply line, so instead of digging up your whole yard, they only dig a few holes to access the old line. They did a very good job of cleaning up, and the work was performed in just a few hours.

The water main to my house ruptured causing a small flow of water to build up in my flower bed and run down hill. I had several contractors come by to give an estimate. Several said that they suggested replacing the old pipe by pulling a new pipe through the old one (called a cable pull). The other method would be to dig the entire pipe out of the ground, right through the main area of my subdivision. American Plumbing was a referral from a another company that said they did not perform cable pulls. The concern was that the location of the break cannot be confirmed. If it was inside the house then a jackhammer would have to be used to gain access to the pipe under my house. Several contractors were confident that the break was outside, several were not so sure. American Plumbing came in with a considerably lower estimate than the other estimates which were for both methods. The entire process was quick and painless. They dug up the dirt on each side of the line, inserted a new copper pipe and replaced the dirt and the bushes removed from the flower bed. I was very satisfied with the effort and would use American Plumbing again with no question.

Found American Plumbing through Angies list. They used an answering service, but Dan got back to me in a few hours. They're estimate came in lower than others (by ~$400), The only 'on-paper' difference was that they did not re-seed areas that required digging, but they replaced the sod more or less intact. They were able to schedule on the weekend following the Thursday call. A slight mis-communication resulted in the work being done a day earlier than expected, but they were in and out in less than 3 hours. (Could be longer, I was told, depending on hardness of soil and presense of rocks, so we were lucky). They dug 3 holes (1 at the water meter, one halfway through the yard, and one at the front wall of the house. They punched through the foundation and sealed it, bypassing and sealing the old PB main. They laid down a tarp to keep the walkway clean from dirt, and replaced the mulch and plants resonably well. Overall, we were very satisified. They were fast, clean and the warrenty (10 year) was a good reassurance.

During the Memorial Day 2009 weekend, I discovered that my water service line was leaking between the water meter and my house. Fairfax Water confirmed this during an emergency call, and informed me that their responsibility ended at the meter. I looked up the first eight highest rated plumbers and placed calls. Seven replied to say they didn't perform "outside" work, and two of them recommended American Plumbing. Dan came out and gave me an estimate, and described how they would do the work. They would not dig up my yard to do the work. They would dig a few holes to run a "worm" and bore a new line, run new copper line to replace the old faulty black plastic line, and install a new shut-off value in my basement. Day of work, the crew shows up on time (10 AM). They laid out some tarps, removed the sod, and started to dig the needed holes. The crew piled the dirt on the tarps. They ran the worm through the holes, ran the new copper line through the tunnel, drilled a new hole through the basement wall, and made the connections. The water was turned back on, and everything worked. They sealed the basement wall hole with cement, filled in the holes, tamped down the dirt, and replaced the sod. Then they cleaned up the mud with the hose. They were done by 1 PM.
Description of Work: American Plumbing installed a new water service line from the water meter into my townhouse. They also installed a new water service shut-off value in the basement. They performed this work without using a backhoe or a ditch witch, and without tearing up my yard.

Of the four companies I contacted, American Plumbing was the only one that proposed to replace the water line entirely without trenching my yard and destroying my tree, and the estimate was about half the price of the trenching method. They arrived on time, completed the work in three hours (including cleanup!), and guarantee their work for 10 years. They were very professional.
Description of Work: They replaced a broken water line from the house to the city meter.
