Description of Work: I bought a Big Deal for 40 hours of painting for $999 based on the contractor's "A" grade and the assertion, shown on the web page for that specific Big Deal, that the company was top-rated. I called a few days later to schedule and the nice lady who answered explained that she was covering the phones temporarily because of the high volume of calls associated with this Deal. She was unable to answer questions or schedule appointments but was very friendly and clearly wanted to be helpful. She said no one had asked my question yet (about faux painting) but she'd make a note to find out for herself in case anyone else asked. The contractor called the next day when I wasn't home. Then we played a couple of rounds of phone tag. He called back within a day both times I called him but we never actually spoke because I got caught up with a family situation and failed to call him back after his second message. In the meantime, I realized he was also a handyman so I decided to ask for quotes for some other work. I then did what I should have done in the first place: looked up his business on Angie's List. To my chagrin, I found that he had many bad and some downright terrible reviews, including two notably awful ones resulting from the same Deal I had purchased. I'm grateful to those reviewers for alerting me to facts not noted in the fine print for the Deal: first, that time spent packing up, cleaning brushes, etc. counts towards the 40 hours of painting; and second, that the 40 hours would take the overwhelming form of 5-6 people showing up all on one day. I'm also thankful for reviewers who noted that time spent supply-shopping and traveling to/from the customer's home was charged, in addition to fees for gas and tools (caulk: okay, sure; saw blade: what?). Having had a house gutted by an electrical fire plus having done several renovations, I've worked with more than my fair share of contractors and I never heard of these practices. Of equal importance, I noted that the contractor's responses to some bad reviews were snide, defensive and/or excuse-laden (however valid those excuses might be, it still strikes me as somewhat unprofessional - and when there are multiple replies containing excuses, that in itself is questionable). Even in a response where he offered a discount on future work in order to make a customer happy, he still got in a dig about some people being unreasonable. The combination of the poor reviews, especially for the same job I had planned to have done, and the contractor's replies to some of those reviews led me to the conclusion that I do not want to follow through on this Big Deal. *I want to qualify the "C" grade I gave with the observation that it's ridiculous to require someone who never even spoke with the contractor, much less had any work done, to give a grade. Thus, the C is based on other reviews of the Deal I bought plus lack of follow-through (As the customer, I can get away with not returning one phone call promptly; however, there's no rule stating that the contractor can only leave one message and then must wait indefinitely for a return call from the customer, especially when a job is pre-paid).

Description of Work: I found Top Dog Handyman Service from Angie's List through a friend that had partial bathroom remolded and the interior of their house painted. I call the company and left a message and the response was fast. I got a return call within the same day and spoke with Rod Heiston, he was very informative and made me feel at ease. I hired them to paint the interior of my house and I needed the work to be done before the holidays. They like to work with Sherwin and Williams which is my favorite too. The Designers were knowledgable and professional to work with. They helpled me out on choosing colors and figuring out how much paint i would need The guys from the company started the day bright and early as 7:00 am. They worked 10 hours and returned to finish the job the very next morning. They were extremely organized and professional. I personally liked the project manager, Kyle. He was able to coordinate, oversees the job, and performed excellent manner! I am really pleased with the work that was provided by Top Dog Professional Handyman Service. I am strongly recommend this company, nothing but satisfaction, and so will yoo, too!

Description of Work: five painters arrived at 7:30 a.m. and stayed until they finished painting the 4 rooms in our basement. They did a grand job, cleaned up well. LAnguage barrier an issue and job foreman left our site after initial set up. Some issue reaching him by phone to clear up some miscommunication, but was ultimately resolved to our satisfaction. WE were asked to pay additional $50 for supplies--this was not mentioned when we set up the service, only after the painters had arrived and were setting up . Would have liked full disclosure prior to start. Also, we did not know if the project would get finished within the time allotted and felt somewhat uneasy with the notion that we could continue to use their services, past our 40 hours , at $89 per hour. Would have preferred more definition as to cost.

Description of Work: I purchased the Big Deal for two hours of Plumbing Services to have a bathroom exhaust vent replaced. I purchased two vents, and the service tech chose which one was best to use. It was smaller than the hole left by the one taken out, which would have required dry-wall repair. I chose not to have this done because I have another job requiring dry wall replacement, so chose to incorporate that repair with the that effort. the work was professionally done and in a very timely manner. I have in the past, and would most definitely use Top Dog again. They're great, and clean up very nicely.

Description of Work: A 45 year old man artrived - looked like a normal human bieing. Took 2 and a half hours to do what should have been 45 minutes (tops) work. He made it way too obvious that he was killing time --- out to the truck - back into the basement --- back to the truck. He used a bead of caulk - which was a good thing ---- but then charged me $15 for a tube of caulking (didn't l;eave the tube). Charged me $5 each for three small light bulbs (chrimsas light type). Not very professional guys --- company culture of rip-off the dumb customers - they don't know the differebnce.

Description of Work: I paid for two specials. They came out and were very friendly and polite. I need my kitchen sink faucet fixed (tightened) and my toilet kept running, so I had paid for a total toilet re-build. They tightened the sink faucet and found some leak, so they repaired that underneath the sink as well. The toilet they worked with the handle and tried tightening and and adjusting. He also told me the valve was failing. I didn't know what that meant. So he said call if you have anymore problems with the toilet running. Well, sure enough, the toilet kept running again that day. First he tried to charge me more labor for the sink repair, when he didn't mention he was considering it a third job from just tightening the faucet (which I had paid $99 for) then he agreed he wouldn't charge me extra for the labor, just parts. Then when I called two days later to complain about the toilet not being fixed, he said "I told you the valve failed and you didn't want to pay to fix it at the time" Well, the valve was the main shut off valve to the toilet, so I couldn't turn it off. He then said well the problem is not the valve it's the floating valve thing inside that failed. Then he yelled at me and said "you're not a plumber and hung up.' I went to The Home Depot, bought a new stop valve for three dollars and a new univrersal toilet fill valve for $8 and a new lever for $6. I came home and turned the water off to the house and did the job myself. Horrible, horrible service I will never call again or recommend to anyone. They absolutely do not stand by their work. I paid for a toilet rebuild and he played with the lever and didn't even get that fixed. Do not use Top Dog if you want it done right and the assurance they will actually stand behind their work. It was two days later, not two months. I'm telling you, this guy is untrustworthy! Very sad, pick someone else.

Description of Work: Installed two new faucets in double sinks in master bathroom.

Description of Work: I used your Big Deal to have them install a brand new Moen kitchen faucet. As their plumber was about to leave, I checked it and found that it was leaking. I showed him the leak and he said I had a bad faucet and to take it up with the manufacturer. He made no effort to double check the installation instructions or to call them about the leak. I did call and the service tech had me take it apart where I found it was missing a key washer that hadn't been installed. I had them send me a new one and had to do the work myself. While the plumber was here I also had him check shower faucets that wouldn't turn off and a bad diverter in another tub/shower.He took both apart and on the first said there were two plastic parts that were the problem. I asked if he could replace and he said he didn't have the parts. I then asked if he could put shut off valves on the shower. He didn't have those parts. The bad diverter part was identified but he didn't have that part either. So it was basically a waste of money having him come. I subsequently called another Angie's List plumber called The Plumbing Doctor. They sent an experienced plumber who fixed both problems with parts he had on his truck. Very knowledgeable and pointed out that the first shower needed new cartridges -- which this plumber did not identify. nproblem installing shut off valves as well. I'd never use Top Dog for plumbing again but HIGHLY rate The Plumbing Doctor.

Description of Work: We needed to have our leaky kitchen faucet replaced, so I purchased the $99 coupon from an Angie's list email. Top Dog responded, as promised, by their voice mail message, within 48 hours, and came 2 days later to replace the faucet. Kyle, the owner's nephew, did a great job and was very nice. We also had an outside spigot that was leaking badly. He went to Home Depot to get a part and was able to fix that as well. that cost us $93 for the part and $89 for an hour of labor. We will call them again.

Description of Work: Arrived on time. First ten minutes spent on paperwork. I was requested to find and print out my coupon and then sign an agreement that I understood the terms. I disagreed with the terms. I thought I had purchased a "standard kitchen sink faucet repair". He said he had to find the leak (which was pretty obvious) before it could be repaired, and since that was one of the listed services, and since I had only purchased one service, that was it. To fix the leak would be charged extra at their regular hourly rate. I had little choice. He turned off the water to the sink and began to dismantle the faucet. He found that he could not remove the screw (to get to the cylinder) as it seemed to be somewhat encrusted without breaking the faucet. He then showed me a new Moen faucet assembly that I could purchase for approx. $190 plus installation. He also pointed out a discolored area in the floor under the sink area, saying that if I didn't get a new faucet set, the floor would disintegrate. However, I know for a fact that the discoloration was caused by a leak several years ago, and that there is no water dripping under the sink at this point. This seemed to be a real setup to me. I decided to live with the leak for the time being (until I can get a real plumber rather than a handyman) and just count the $99 against what turned out to be, not a Big Deal, but a really really Bad Deal.
