+ 0 moreWe purchased the Angie's Deal for 40 hours of labor of painting for $999. The company had 6 guys to come out to do the work. The project manager came with them and set the job up and then left and returned to pick up the workers. We had discussed with the project manager that we wanted the living room, dining room, hallway and 3 bedrooms done. No closets were included in this. The painters were to arrive at 8:00 but did not get here until 9:30. We were disappointed that 6 painters did not complete 3 rooms and the hallways. They worked very slowly. One painter was observed several times sitting on the balcony texting. I think they were instructed to go slowly so they could return the next day for full pay which I was told would be $89 per painter per hour. The living room, dining room, hall way and master bedroom except the trim and a second coat on the door was completed. There were a few splotches of paint on my wood floors that were not cleaned up. What was painted was good but we thought more should have been accomplished with 6 guys working according to information we received from other contractors. We hired another company to come in the next day to complete the work. The painters used the microwave without even asking if it was okay with me. I would have allowed this but I would think asking would be something courteous to do. When a deal sounds too good to be true it probably is, which was true in this case. I would not use or recommend this company again.
Description of Work: Painting was done in the living room, dining room, hallway and master bedroom. No patch work was needed or done. Two coats of paint was used on all walls. The ceilings were white with one coat of paint and the trim was white. The dining room had one accent wall and the bedroom had one accent wall.

+ -1 moreI purchased a 'Big Deal' from Angie's List, called the contractor and made the appointment. I left a message on my first call. My call back came as promised within 48 hrs (over weekend). I set up the appointment with owner requesting a call just before the service person arrived in order to secure our two dogs. The requested call came and the service man arrived promptly at scheduled time. He was pleasant, knowledgeable and did not mess around but got right to work. He knew his job, corrected a leak not directly related to the main faucet and was finished in under two hours (a time related to the 'deal'). It was a pleasant experience. Our service person was very polite, friendly and did excellent work. We will call again as they not only do plumbing but other jobs related to home ownership. Angie's List is GREAT!
Description of Work: The kitchen sink faucet was replaced. We ordered a new one, the old one was under warranty, and had it on hand for the replacement.

+ 0 moreOver the phone the company was confident that it had the replacement part to repair an leaky old bathtub/shower faucet in our daughter's bathroom. I gave them the make and year. When he arrived and looked at it the person they sent out said that he did not have the part and needed to go to Home Depot. Home Depot does not carry the part (he should have checked a plumbing supply). After consuming all of the time included in the Big Deal, he then said he could not fix it and that we would have to buy a new faucet, shower head, and diverter set. The company offered to give us a discount to install it. When they returned, the person they sent had to go to Home Depot again for a copper fitting, wasting valuable time getting a basic part that should have been foreseen. Once repaired, the plaster job done on the drywall was awful, not even ready for sanding. This was truly an amateur operation that was not remotely worth the money spent. It gives the whole "Big Deal" concept a bad name
Description of Work: The company was hired to repair leaky shower and tub knobs. Ultimately they installed new ones that we bought.

+ 1 moreKyle came on time. I showed him the room for ceiling fan and the attic. He first installed the attic fan. He was very fast. He only spent an hour installing that attic fan. My attic was dark because I did not have lights and he did not complaint about that. He told me that he used to work using his flashlight all the time but what amazed me he was very fast installing that attic fan in the dark. Second he installed ceiling fan. He needed to convert /put new wires because that room originally had light bulb and I wanted to convert that light bulb to ceiling fan. He was also fast doing that in an hour. He cleaned up everything and and very well done. He is very professional, precise and fast. No mess at all.

+ 0 moreAttic fan was not working. Top Dog show up as scheduled and inspected the existing attic fan. Turns out the motor was burned out and would require replacement. I was thinking they would have to replace the entire unit, but as it turns out they had the correct motor in their truck and were able to do a swap. Turn around was very quick and the unit's been working perfectly since. All that I could have expected.

+ 0 more. Later when I went in my attic to replace the attic fan, that the bathroom exhaust fan was vented into the attic not outside. I called and was told that was the way they found it. It would have been nice if they had pointed that out. I had the feeling that the fan I provided was bigger than the one it replaced so the venting didn't fit.

He needed a different part to complete the installation and inquired as to whether I wanted to buy it and have him come back another day or he could count the time to purchase the part against my "deal". I opted to count the time and it worked out great. The new fan works perfectly and you can't even tell that it was replaced.

I even requested he wear plastic covering on his shoes since we had the carpet steamed recently and he gladly obliged. He examined the shower that was starting to clog and snaked it. He cleaned up the mess and fixed the clogging issue. I also asked him about a couple of issues with the slow kitchen sink and possibly replacing the old tub stopper and he was very helpful and responded to my questions openly. We was very professional and I was pleased with the work.

Description of Work: The plumber arrived several hours later in the day than when I was told he would arrive, but he did call to explain. He removed and disposed of two old toilets, cleaned the areas and installed the new ones. He also replaced a garbage disposal. However, he forgot to cut off the floor bolts and put the caps on one toilet and was gone by the time I noticed. I called but he did not return to finish the job. Now here's the disappointing part: it turns out the two coupons I bought--two hours of plumbing services each; one coupon per job--weren't as good a value as I thought. Each toilet took about an hour to remove and replace, so that used up both coupons, and I had to pay extra for the garbage disposal. The key here is that the company's hourly rate is less than $99, so I actually ended up paying more for what I got. I learned a lesson which I would have preferred to learn from Angie's List: call the vendor and ask for the hourly rate BEFORE you purchase the Big Deal coupons.

Description of Work: Buyer Beware -- this company is very expensive and lures you in with a promise of 40 hours of labor (turns out to be all in one day), but they work slowly. In hindsight, this appeared to be a scheme to extend the project for multiple days at quadruple the price and they only want to work on time and materials instead of a fixed price fee. We purchased an Angie's List painting special for 40 hours of painting service for $1,000. We purchased all the paint and supplies separate for them and we discussed with the contractor over the phone our priority list of projects for both interior and exterior work. They assured us they’d complete most of our list. On the day of work to be performed, the crew arrived more than three hours late and the only way I was alerted to the late arrival was by me initiating a phone call to the company when they were one hour late. Instead of sending 4 workers, they decided to send 5 to make up for the late start and ensure they completed 40 hours in one day. Here's what they don't tell you: 1. One individual is supposed to be a project manager who spends time with you at the start understanding what you want done. However, he spent most of his time in the truck, not doing anything related to the project. The painting crew ended up painting a portion of a room that was not supposed to be touched. Had the project manager been involved, he would have noticed these mistakes and stopped them from happening. Instead, his crew wasted more than 30 minutes prepping our family room with a double level ceiling which was not even a room on the list to be painted. 2. A portion of your 40 hours involves the time for the crew to load the truck up and clean their paint brushes and equipment, so this also needs to be factored into the 40 hours. 3. We had received 3 other quotes to perform this work and the quotes all came in around 40 hours of work. Unfortunately, under this "bargain" from Angie's List, we ended up only accomplishing 2 of our 6 projects in the 40 hours and Top Dog was more than happy to send out the entire crew for another day for more money to "see what they can get done." Given the pace of the first day, I fully expected this would have turned into a third day ultimately costing me 4x the cost of my other 3 quotes. $1,000 would have turned into $4,000 in the blink of an eye. They claim their work is superior to others and while the quality was good, I would have been equally satisfied with one of my other quotes for 1/4 the price. 4. Buyers beware of contractor deals that are time based. I will never again purchase a contract for labor under this arrangement as I fear other contractors will intentionally adopt the "slow pace" work ethic in order to increase their time and my expense. They were too practiced at this approach for it to be accidental. They were well versed with all of the practiced responses and excuses for why they moved so slow. It was a well thought-out plan from contractors -- homeowners beware!!

+ 0 moreThe four painters and supervisor Kyle arrived, we went over the job and both agreed that it would take longer than the 40 hours paid for in the deal. Their was a lot of drywall repair to do because of damage done when the wallpaper was removed and some flaking paint on one other wall. In addition to the wall repair I had about 30 gallons of paint to go up so it was a big job, but I assumed they would be able to finish the next day at a reasonable price. Kyle left the painters and said he would be back in 10 hours and we could access what would be necessary to finish. The painters went right to work and seemed to be did a good job on repairing the drywall, but when I asked the foreman to use primer on the family room ceiling he insisted that it did not need it, although he did use it in the Den and Kitchen. Later when bubbles appeared under the freshly painted ceiling in the Family Room with no primer they had to go back and make repairs. At the end of the day they finished all of the drywall work except for final sanding and about 20% of the painting so it would probably take them another 40 plus hours to complete the job. I rated the work they did as good but not excellent and I thought they could have been a little more efficient, one painter spend a lot of time using a heat gun to dry the spackle when he probably could be doing something more useful. When Kyle returned I was informed that the same amount of work (40 hours) that I had paid $999 and was advertised as a $2,000 value would now cost me $3,560 the next day and still would probably not finish the job. After informing Kyle that I was not willing to pay $3,560 for $2,000 worth of work he called Rod and they offered to give me $400 off. Wanting to get the job done I offered $2,400 for work valued at $2,000, but Rod refused and we terminated our relationship. Now my house is a wreck and I have to hire a new painter, but I refuse to be taken advantage of.
Description of Work: The company repaired drywall and painted in four rooms, two halls and a stairwell in my house, but did not finish the job.

Description of Work: Top Dog installed two new toilets and worked on a leaky shower. They did a great job with the toilets. Using the "big deal" of $155 per toilet saved us a great deal of money. We bought the toilets ourselves from a dealer and saved ccash that way as well, while also getting exactly the style we wanted. As for the shower, they were unable to finish that repair as it was going to require more demolition to our bathroom than we originally had planned.

+ 0 moreThe crew did a good job and cleaned up after themselves when the work was done. It took a little longer than I expected, but they did a nice job. I was especially happy with the repairs they made to some shoddy drywall patchwork from another project someone did for us. Part of the project was to repaint the woodwork in a couple rooms, and they didn't quite get all the way to the bottom of the carpet. I expected that they would use a blade to hold the carpet away from the woodwork, but it looks like they just painted as close to the carpet as they could by hand. It was a minor issue and not noticeable. If I had been there when they did it, i would have asked them to paint lower.
Description of Work: We purchased a special deal from Top Dog that included 40 an-hours of painting for $999. We subsequently paid for the crew to come back a second and third day to do additional painting. In addition to painting, they dis some drywall work where we had some damage from a roof leak.

He used to be a home builder/contractor and even gave me some other suggestions for my kitchen. He offered to do the work for me too. I told him I would consider the work for the future and I would use them again. Their office was very close to us which made them very convenient too.

+ 0 moreRod was very responsive to phone call and scheduling. We scheduled the day of Hurricane Sandy but they still came- not sure if we would have power the whole time but we did. Kyle and 4 painters came on time and got right to work. I had purchased all paint and was ready. Kyle, serving as the Project Manager seemed to think they would get all the rooms I wanted finished. I thought 5 guys for 8 hours would certainly get more done than they did. I had a double foyer, dining and living room, kitchen and familiy room that I wanted painted. They painted the foyer, and the kitchen and one wall of family room. When it became clear that they would not be finishing in the 40 man hours from the Big Deal we had to either do the rest ourselves or hire them at their regular rate. So, did they do a great job painting? YES Did they paint as quickly as they would have if they were hired by the job and not the Big Deal? I don't know. One thing I didn't agree with was charging me 8 hours work for the "Project Manager"'s time. -maybe an hour of actual work was done by him. When I questioned whether or not his time was included in my "40 hours" he got a bit defensive. There was more standing around and driving to store and lunch than work. The painters worked hard and did a beautiful job. They cleaned up after themselves. We hired them for the following day. 2 painters came and seemed to get more done than the 5 the day before. No project manager necessary.
