Top Dog Professional Handyman Svcs is a division of Heiston kitchen and bath, which has been remodeling homes in the northern virginia area for nearly 20 years. Family owned and operated by Rod Heiston, Heiston kitchen and bath has earned itself a worthy reputation for outstanding, high-quality craftsmanship and exceptional customer service. Unlike large handyman franchises, top dog was created to bring this same level of expertise and professionalism to small and big jobs that don’t require the high level of planning and design of most Heiston remodeling projects. As a small business, they do not have large overhead costs for marketing and operations, thus, can pass on the savings directly to customers. And top dog does it all: install a ceiling fan, install a toilet, inspect a sump pump, fix a dry wall, detect and fix a leak, grout tiles, replace a faucet, install a new sink, replace your windows, fix a roof, repair a drywall, no job is too big or too small for topdogging! In efforts to offer simple and economical services, top dog makes rough estimates right over the phone for most projects. If the job is too large, a consultant will drive out to your home to discuss budgets and perform a free estimate. The fee is always the same, so you’ll never be surprised by a large bill. Top dog's price structure is the most economical in the area. Offering the lowest service charge, jobs are billed at an affordable, fixed hourly rate per man-hour. If you find a better offer, show us the proof and top dog will match it! Our jobs are usually represented by up to 2 technicians (representing up to 2 man-hours) so we can get the job done right and fast for your convenience. If your job only requires 1 technician to complete, we will be upfront and honest not charge you for the extra man hour.

Some of the errors were not noticed immediately, but here are examples of my concerns and my family's: surfaces were NOT prepped with sanding first. there are obvious surface variations and "waves" on the walls from uneven surface that were not prepared. there was a hole in the drywall from the doorknob in the bathroom, not even repaired...painted over! there were areas that looked thin/ one coat instead of two; there were blobs of wrong color paint on surfaces (amateur-esque) including kitchen ceiling and brand new cabinets. trim was supposedly painted, but not prepped and left in poor condition (LR) I could not BE there on the 2nd day because i work, but i trusted them in my house! i kept in touch as much as humanly possible throughout the day and texts from the supervisor were always that everything was going smoothly . the LR and DR were not touched the 2nd day because they were "finished" the first. i initiated contact more than receiving contact. the trim around the FRONT HALL doorway was left 2 different colors which i noticed after they were done/dried...and no one consulted me about it. paint cans were left inside and i understood, but around 16 cans were left and several were EMPTY and could have been disposed of. blue tape was left everywhere and the house was not left in the same condition in which they came in. paint splotches on floor. length of "corner round" missing. list goes on. have pictures worst is that on the second day (the coupon was used the first day for 40 man hours (4 men x 10 hrs) WITH an English -speaking supervisor who did not paint (at least when i was home, 3/4 of the time); second day was ONE painter with the same supervisor, charged for TWO painters that day..........was inconsistent. did not see what the supervisor painted...only the Hispanic painter started right when he came and i was still home. I understood and agreed to the supervisor's paid time to travel to the paint store for more supplies/paint. head of company never saw finished product. phone follow-up did not answer my concerns.
Description of Work: interior painting, did not include any handyman type activities discussed at the consultation. Paint was purchased by me for day 1 of 2 initially........did not get a company discount because the store manager did not have the company on its client list (at least the name I supplied on their card). included LR,DR, and kitchen/back hall bathroom, a bedroom. unsure that any trim was completed. did not receive a written consultation/estimate which i realize now would have protected me!...........the first day (40 man hours for 999.00) was paid for by the coupon. i wanted the painting to continue a second day, although if i had looked closer after the first day at the rooms that were "completed", i would not have ordered a second day (unsanded trim work, unpatched drywall in the bathroom, which should have been done FIRST...as examples of incomplete work/preparation) 2nd day cost was demanded 1/2 up front (ok) and 1/2 at completion of the day........that was unfortunately done(to the supervisor) ....before finished job examined by myself OR the company owner. HAVE PICTURES, WILL UPLOAD ONCE HAVE ACCESSORY TO DO SO....THANKS

In one word, OUTSTANDING. We couldn't be happier with the results, and plan to use them again real soon for other handyman services. The crew arrived on time and took great care to protect the floors and other surfaces. They worked tirelessly all day with just a quick lunch break. The supervisor even took the time to fix several nail pops in other rooms. The were polite, hardworking and did an excellent job cleaning up.
Description of Work: We are prepping our house to put it up for sale, and used Top Dog to paint the interior of our 2-bay garage, the mud room, and large master bedroom walk-in closet. They provided 5 painters for 8-hours.

Excellent work...........Microwave job was more complicated than anticipated but Red did a great job. Some confusion with the pricing and paperwork with Angie's Big Deal (work was performed simultaneously with a Plumbing Big Deal job) but we were very pleased with the results.

The serviceman who came was punctual and exceedingly pleasant. I knew he wanted to fix my hot water as much as I did. It's possible, though, that the complexity of the task was out of the norm for which he was knowledgeable. Thankfully, the manager (whom he called) had more depth of experience and was able to suggest a trick that ultimately worked.
Description of Work: I was not getting hot water out of my tub faucet. It would briefly start but then stop, making showers very enervating. I had been told previously by another plumber that the tile wall in the shower would have to be removed, allowing access to the pipes behind the wall, before the faucet could be repaired. I did not want to do that, for financial and scope of repair reasons. I purchased two Big Deals from Angie's List, each providing 2 hours of specific types of plumbing repair. I used one for the toilet repair (it was always running) - instead of just purchasing an individual part, I agreed to replace the whole flushing mechanism (I paid for the part, of course). The second coupon was to be used for the tub faucet repair, even though it was not one of the listed services on the Big Deal. They agreed to work on the faucet, for which I was grateful. When the first serviceman investigated, he analyzed that it would not be necessary to remove the tile; it could be fixed by changing the handles (the plumbing is old and the inner workings had broken away). I asked if I could order a replacement set of handles and faucet so that it would match my other fixtures -- as long as it was the correct parameters, of course. They agreed and I found such a set on-line. Before ordering, though, I copied all of the specs and sent to the supervisor, asking if this set would fit in my tub (the repairman had taken measurements). I was told that it would, and I ordered it ($100). When it arrived, I sought to make an appointment for installation and was told that one of the other repairmen (a 'master plumber') would come by just to check things out. Well, when he saw what I'd ordered and quickly surveyed the situation, he said it wouldn't work. What I needed was something else. There proceeded a succession of emails and frustration on I'm sure both of our parts. I was at the point of just canceling the whole thing when cooler heads were regained. I agreed to have a serviceman return to try to work on it once more. They had purchased a standard set of handles and faucet at the supply store (it didn't come in the finish I'd wanted). The repairman worked assiduously to get hot water to come out, to no avail. I was afraid I would have no choice but to undertake the major removal of tile. Then, he called the company manager who suggested he try one more thing -- to blow the gunk out of the pipe that was impeding the flow by turning the handle all the way up. I don't know who was more excited AND relieved AND amazed when -- it WORKED! I had new handles with new inner hardware and free-flowing hot water. At that point, all the earlier sturm und drang was forgotten and I was just plain thrilled with the success. Still, for the purposes of this review, I felt it necessary to present the entire experience.

Price was good. Quality was fair. The range burner was repaired. The bathroom fan was not repaired. We asked the motor be replaced. It was like he was doing us a favor. We told him we would pay for the motor replacement separately from the "service." This was done but the fan continued to make noise. Seems the blade was put on incorrectly. He had to return to fix his mistake. Again, attitude when he learned he had to return. Responsiveness was fair. We were put on his "list" when he would be back out to our neighborhood. This handyman needs to take courses in professionalism and service. He lacks the attitude to deliver both.

Once the guy showed up (late in the evening), everything went quite smoothly. We had made a last minute appointment because of a large party that we were hosting in a few days, and Top Dog fit us into their schedule almost immediately. However, this meant we were the last appointment of the day and since other jobs ran long, the plumber did not arrive until almost 9 PM. He was extremely professional and called us several times to give us a heads up and status updates so we knew when to expect him so it did not matter to us that he came later in the night. The job went quite smoothly. He was very friendly and professional and the toilet works perfectly now so we will certainly use them again in the future for handyman jobs.
Description of Work: Top Dog came to our house to fix our half bathroom toilet, which was wobbling and not flushing properly. The guy did a wonderful job. The toilet had to have the wax ring replaced and had to be reseated and bolted down correctly after the previous do-it-yourself owner completed the job improperly. The entire flushing mechanism inside the tank also had to be replaced and Top Dog used quality replacement parts (which they had in their service vehicle, despite the fact that I forgot to mention that the tank parts may need to be replaced). We have not had any issues with the toilet ever since Top Dog came out to fix the toilet so we are very pleased with their work and would recommend them to others.

Technician was on time and ready to work. I was concerned about cleaning up damage from a prior toilet leak. He said that problem was due to improper seating of toilet. I had had two other companies look at toilet before Top Dog without fully solving the problem. he removed toilet and bolt holding it to floor and replace the bolts. Baddam bam! No more problem,. he also cleaned up the stains in basement below the toilet with "Stain kill." I probably will have them repaint ceiling when I figure out matching color and have time to get the job done. A FEW MONTHS LATER THE LEAK RETURNED. A PLUMBER DID AN INSPECTION. THE LEAK WAS DUE TO A POOR PIPE CONNECTION OVER 20 YEARS AGO. PLUMBER DID THE REPAIR AND A PAINTER DID THE RESTORATION, KNOWING WHAT I KNOW KNOW, I WOULD GIVE A DIFFERENT RATING.

When our new washer was being installed, the water wouldn't turn off so we needed to call a plumber to install a new valve. I called Top Dog and was pleased to be able to make an appointment for later in the day. The technician arrived later than initially expected, however, he kindly let me know that he would be delayed. When he arrived, he quickly assessed the situation. He worked quickly and quietly and cleaned up before he left. It was clear he knew what he was doing and was very conscientious.

Overall went great. Kyle's a really good guy, very professional and very knowledgeable. See also above.
Description of Work: Kyle was great! He came on time, did the work (including going to Home Depot to get parts!) and then completed the task. The tasks included figuring out why one of my faucets had low pressure and fixing it and putting in a drain stopper which had broken several weeks before. I could have done it too probably but I generally don't have time and these issues always have quirks that only someone liike Kyle could figure out quickly (and did), while someone like me doing it for the first time would have taken lots more time and frustration. I was home when Kyle completed the job and was able to verify that he did the work correctly. Yes, I would (and probably will) hire Kyle again!

It was a very good experience; I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Top Dog was retained to do interior painting (walls and ceilings) of downstairs rooms. In addition, I'd had a leak with water stains in one of the ceilings. Top Dog was very professional and thorough. I had them stay an extra day to complete more rooms I wanted painted. They cut open the ceiling with water damage and determined that I had a leaky toilet. They took the toilet up and saw that the rubber around the base needed to be replaced - which they did. They then patched the hole in the ceiling and were able to fast-dry the drywall patching so it could be painted. In addition, they also replaced a gate which had blown off from Hurricane Sandy. I was very pleased and will use them again.

The service was fine. I was expecting to spend $99. but with the cost of plumbing services was satisfied with paying $200.
Description of Work: The Top Dog Professionals advertised with Angie's list for routine toile maintenance for 99$. They repaired a clogged, nonflushing toilet for $200. final price.
I hired Top Dog to remodel our bathroom and other parts of the house due to a large flood we had. They came in with designers at first and wrote up a very well detailed proposal. The price was fair and Rod and his team were great. They started the work each day on time and for the most part there was not any delays. They kept to the schedule and the job finished on time. The master bathroom was a compete remodel that had custom tile, granite tops, custom cabinetry, thick shower doors, interior doors, trim, crown moldings, Paint, drywall, plumbing and electrical fixtures. The room below needed drywall, doors, trim, hardwood floors, ceiling fan, and paint. All of the work was impeccable. Rod is a real perfectionist. I have already recommended them to some of my neighbors and family.

I was really shocked at how slowly the progress went. There were four painters and one supervisor who did a little painting and a lot of talking on the phone (on day two he admitted that he was supervising another job at another site while at my site) or away in the van. The quality of the painting was adequate, but the work was slow, and by the time it became clear that a second day of work would be required, we were in too deep. The supervisor did not communicate my request to start with the great room first, which is what I wanted them to do, since we could do the bathroom and entryway ourselves. I had to point out a number of missed spots. On day two, the supervisor was not present, cleanup took a long time, adding hours. Also, on the first day the supervisor purchased lunch for the workers. On the second day, the workers asked to borrow money for lunch and they would pay me back in cash when the supervisor got there and paid them. I did this so they could eat. The Supervisor was upset with them for asking - I was not. I had to rent and extra-tall ladder for a substantial sum of money, which was not used at all. Honestly, I feel that this big deal was really a rip off.
Description of Work: We bought the "Big Deal" $1000 for 40 hours of painting work. What should have been 40 or only slightly more turned into 64. Unfortunately, the additional hours were billed at their "handyman" rate of $89 per hour, which was appalling. They painted our kitchen, entryway, half bath, great room, and wall going up the stairs (including ceilings).

Please don't use Top Dog. I had a horrible experience. My story is a bit long, but you should read it if you're considering using this company. It truly captures how bad their service is. If you don't have time to read my story (I don't normally read the long stories on Angie's List either)...HERE'S THE BOTTOM LINE: we wasted $370 on Top Dog, they didn't fix our problem, and we will now have to pay $300 to fix scratches they caused in our sink. - I bought a deal on Angie's List for $99 for 2 hrs of Top Dog services. We redeemed the deal to unclog our sink. - Kyle, technician not certified plumber, used a hand snake. It didn't work. He used up the 2 hrs of the deal and didn't have the more powerful snake on his truck to try. So we paid $99 and he left. Fair enough. - Same day as the service, we left for vacation and the night we returned I noticed scratches in the basin of our sink. The sink is a pristine white Kohler sink bought new in June 2011, the scratches had not been there before Kyle snaked the drain. - I called up Rod (owner), told him about the scratches and that the clog persisted. Rod told me that if I did not see Kyle literally scratching the sink, he couldn't help. When I pointed out that it was far-fetched to think my husband or I scratched the sink without knowing it while brushing our teeth or washing our hands (porcelain is very difficult to scratch according to a highly regarded company I called recently for a quote to refinish the sink), Rod said that the only other way he could believe me is if I provided before and after pictures of the basin of the sink. Seriously? Who takes before and after pics of the basin of their sink? - Rod said Kyle could come out again, take a look at the scratches, try to buff them out and try a more powerful snake to unclog the drain. - I wanted to ditch Top Dog at this point but I was eager to fix the clog because we had guests coming in for the weekend and I honestly thought Kyle would come out, see the scratches, realize that he caused them and Top Dog would pay $300 to refinish our sink. - So I scheduled for Top Dog to come out again. - Rod warned me that the clog might be a result of a more serious issue like a reverse Y or decaying pipes. Rod mentioned a few times that the best solution might be to feed cameras down the pipes to assess the issue for around $500. - We decided to try again with a more powerful snake and assess the scratches but not do any forensic work with cameras yet. I asked Rod if he could send a certified plumber instead of Kyle but Rod said that Kyle was a talented, experienced technician. - Kyle came out to the house, he used a more powerful snake. It didn't work. He also tried to buff out the scratches but no luck. He charged us for the time and a tool drop fee totaling $270. Kyle did not charge us for the full time he was working at our house though, I'm guessing because he sensed our frustration. - Later that day I called Rod to ask about reimbursing us for the scratches and to see what he recommended we do about the clog since neither snakes worked. Rod again said he could do nothing for the scratches and recommended his master plumber come out and try the more powerful snake again. - The morning after my conversation with Rod, my husband and I discovered that there was water all over the bathroom floor below the sink. It appeared that Kyle had not properly put the sink back together and it was leaking onto the floor. When my husband called Rod to ask him about this, Rod would not take responsibility for the leak, instead telling us that we should not be using the sink. - Fast forward a couple days. I was DONE with Top Dog and hired another plumbing company to fix the clog and the leak. They sent out a certified plumber and apprentice, they arrived at 12:52 pm, unclogged the sink, fixed the leak and left by 1:52 pm. They charged me $160 total and explained that as far as they could tell it was a regular clog and that the sink had not been put back together properly and was leaking as a result. - All in all, we wasted $370 on Top Dog and will have to pay $300 to fix the scratches in our sink so every time I brush my teeth I don't have flashbacks about my horrendous experience with Top Dog and Rod

Response from Top Dog Professional Handyman Svcs
The definition of BLACKMAIL… “The act of attempting to obtain money by threatening to disclose discrediting information.” This is an illegal act and it will not be tolerated. This homeowner attempted to blackmail me, insisting I pay them money or they would write a bad report. (if you have a bad experience you can bring it up to the company and see if they would make things right but never blackmail). This has happened a couple of times and I will not do business with this these types of people. We work with thousands of Angie’s List members and meet some really nice and loyal customers but sometimes find individuals that are using social media as a weapon. The homeowner made us aware they have been having issues with this sink for some time and had multiple plumbing companies out before us. You could definitely tell due to the condition of the sink and trap connections. They hired us on a $99.00 Big Deal special that covered up to 2 hours for any 1 of the services listed. The Big Deal covers a basic hand held machine snaking with a distance within the room. Our tech had run the snake through three times without being successful. We explained to the homeowner due to the history of the drain being stopped up on many occasions that there could be an underlying issue and we should send a camera down to investigate. Customer insisted that we didn’t use the correct tool even after I said that the hand machine corrects most clogs. She still insisted that we should come back out and run a larger machine, so we did. If we had damaged any of her property and she was upset in any way she would have expressed this and stopped all work at that time but instead she hired us again. Our tech had spent more time using the large snake and did not charge full price due to the sink still having issues. The customer was fully made aware not to use the sink due to the ongoing issues but chose to do so anyway. Who uses a sink knowing that it is still out of order??? Then blames it on the tech… Later that evening I contacted customer to discuss further options. She said that if I did not give her $300.00 she would write a negative report on Angie’s List. At this time I decided not to do any further business with her and told her she should hire another plumber. Thank you for taking the time to read our reports. Sincerely, Rod Heiston - President

1) Was unable to repair leaky sprayer as I would need a whole new faucet because they were connected. I now have the sprayer disconnected and don't use it. 2) Was unable to fix the bathroom tub. He only had a 25 ft snake with him and said, it would probably require a 50 ft. snake to clear out the clogged drain. It is still running slowly. I do think his truck should have carried both a 25 ft and 50 ft snake for these jobs. 3) We discovered there was already an outside faucet but it was in an unusual location - so he did not need to work on that.
Description of Work: 1) Kitchen Sprayer was leaking, 2) Bathroom tub drains slowly, 3) install outside faucet with turnoff valve inside basement.

So far no problems with the work they did.
Description of Work: We were charged almost twice what I expected. I didn't realize the "deal" was for one person doing the work. If two people worked, that was two hours of professional service.

Overall, the experience went well. The scheduling was a bit difficult, but that partial my fault since I had to cancel once or twice. Other than that, they were great!
Description of Work: I purchased a Big Deal for plumbing services.

The day he was supposed to come out, the appointment was scheduled to be at noon. He showed up at five. He wanted to charge us $300 for three hours of work, and another $300 for taking the granite and driving around to look for a matching piece. They did not provide any evidence that they looked around. They then added an additional $79 service charge. When we called the office, they called us all sorts of names started swearing at my husband on the phone. The office also called the guy who was over at our house and started talking about us on the speakerphone in front of our daughter. They also failed to mention that they did not take credit cards until the very end. The next day, the shower started leaking, so we had to have someone else come out and fix the problem.
Description of Work: He took a piece of granite from our countertop that did not fit right to cut it. He was supposed to cut the granite or find a matching piece that did fit. He also installed new shower doors. However, did the work we signed for. He answered my complaint with several lies and we proved him with these lies by the dates of his statement written and signed by him. Copies attached. First appointment 8-30-12. Came back on 10-5-12 to measure counter top for correct cut. He was either supposed to call us withn a week in regards to if granite could be cut or cost of new piece of granite. Called Top Dog back three more times until he finally told us he could not cut it down, and he would look for a match of granite and order. Two more weeks went by and had to contact Top Dog again and was told he could not match granite, and he would have to reinstall old piece. We arranged a date of November 12th. Top Dog never showed up. Called again and was told he would be here at noon on the 19th of November. Showed up at 5:00 pm. My husband stayed here with the handyman (1) and installed the granite. He complained about having to carry up granite as when he took the piece and my husband helped him carry it to his truck. Again proving he was alone! Only one tech. Regarding the lawsuits with the homebuilder for this work is a total lie. We are not in a Lawsuit with the Homebuilder or for the granite for that matter as this was done in 2006 when we upgraded the kitchen. And no lawsuit for the kitchen or granite with Homebuilder or the Kitchen remodeler. Why would he say such a thing? The tech also installed the new Bathroom tub doors at his suggestion so no water leaks to Living room. They leaked the next time it was used and we had to hire someone else to come out and caulk around the new doors they had just installed. Then we paid for this work and the reinstalling of granite and my husband was told we owed an additional $325.00 for looking for a replacement piece of granite. I was not privy of this conversation but my husband brought out the agreement they had signed and this was never put in. An Argument between the owner of Top Dog on the Phone and my husband regarding the situation. The owner's language on a speaker phone was atrocious. We have also contacted Granite Doctors who told us our Blue Pearl Granite is one of the most common granites and they would have no problem replacing. They also stated it would be easy to locate this granite at any place that sells granite. I can only believe he never looked for a slab as he was too busy with other jobs as the tech mentioned to us but wanted to charge us for not being able to to do the work in a weeks time as promised. But it was from August 30th to November 19th is not asking too much to be done before Thanksgiving as a countertop is usually needed in preparing a meal. This company is deceitful and I would not want anyone to do business with such a company as it was an overall horrifying experience. We pay to be a member of Angie's List to protect us from such fraudulent companies, but it did not work in this case.

Response from Top Dog Professional Handyman Svcs
Hello and thank you for reading our reports. A special thanks goes out to the so many honest customers we meet here on Angie’s list. I would like to start by saying the first time we encountered this customer, they had purchased a Big Deal, that is a $99.00 special we sometimes offer on Angie’s list. It’s a great deal offering up to 2 hours for any one of the services that are on sale at the time. We were hired to do a leak search on the roof and were completely successful. At that time the customer wanted our opinion on a piece of granite that was previously installed by the homebuilders. Thy Lady of the house insisted that the granite was cut poorly. It was off but even me being a perfectionist and specializing in the kitchen and bath design build didn’t think it was necessary to change it. The couple themselves fought about the situation in front of the technicians. The lady kept talking about the past lawsuits that she had been involved with and how she should take this one to court as well. I don’t know about you but I don’t like this type of drama. The homeowner wanted to hire us to either have the granite piece cut down or replace it. The homeowners wanted our techs to take the piece to our granite subs to see if they could cut it to fit and if they couldn’t then they would purchase a new piece from us. After explaining this would take some time and that means billable time we proceeded with their wishes. After visiting our granite contractors, like I thought the granite piece could not be cut down and our search for a matching piece started. I sent out pictures and visited 6 granite yards. It sometimes can be difficult to match natural stone perfectly and knowing how this customer was it needed to be perfect. After a few days the homeowner called wanted us not to cut the piece yet, that he was doing some modifications that could affect the template that the tech had made. Another week went by and I received a call from the owners, they had changed their minds and wanted to live with the piece.. Bottom line… We have many hours, and fuel cost invested and they didn’t want to pay so they created an augment with our techs and I heard everything over the phone. I do not want to do business with this type of people. Please pay for the work that you signed for or take your business elsewhere.
