McCrea Heating & Air Conditioning Services of VA

We were with another firm for 18 months, paying for numerous service visits and several expensive interventions. Unfortunately, our system was still not fixed. We called McCrea to see if they could do any better. The difference was night and day. After two visits, our system is working perfectly and for a fraction of the cost of the competing firm. Could not be happier with the service and efficiency. Correct diagnosis on the first try and for far less than we paid elsewhere.

I had McCrea come out because my HVAC seemed to have trouble keeping the house cool on very hot days. They came out and inspected everything, service wise was ok but here was my issue. Their prices are absolutely ridiculous. Over charging on everything only to try to sell their service contract. After paying a ridiculous amount to have my capacitor changed out, the problem continued. They informed me that I would need to change the motor and blowing wheel. Ok, that's fine but the price that they quoted me was absurd. Over $1100 to have this service done telling me it's mainly the labor. At first they offered a 10% discount, but then recanted and said I could only get the discount if I signed up for a service contract. I was unhappy and said no. I called around and read reviews online and ended up paying less than half of what McCrea quoted me to get them installed. On another not, if you are charging SO much for labor, you just suck at your job. The company that changed out my motor and blowing wheel did it in less than half an hr and I was up and running in no time with air conditioning in the house. Truly that put a bad taste in my mouth. This is a company that is trying to just rip you off with their absurdly high costs. Don't fall for this trap, I already paid too much for the minimal service that was provided :( I wish I shopped around more before I called them, but my community hired them initially to install everything so I just started with them. My mistake, don't make it yours look around and get fair prices, not ridiculous mark ups. Two thumbs down here.

They arrived on time and had it completed in 1/2 day. Set up everything on the thermostat. Very happy with the service

Perfect. Arrived on schedule, called to coordinate technician arrival to the house, performed all tasks in a professional manner, carried out all necessary testing and left house promptly once job was finished cleaning up after the job was completed. Service call was covered by warranties.

Logan did a great job. He showed up early, but only after calling to let me know he could come a bit ahead of schedule, and only if I wanted him to. He explained how all the packages for an annual service contract worked, did the work efficiently, and explained everything that is or could become an issues with the systems. While one piece in a furnace did have to be replaced, I never felt as if he was trying to sell me more than I needed, and he gave me some advice for self help of the system, as well. Terrific service!

Stephen Yates has been to my house for this on several occasions and has always been pleasant and professional and done great work.

We have a service contract with them so we're sort of stuck with them. They could quit sending out the latest guy that got pumped out of HVAC school. What we end up with each time is the last guy to graduate from HVAC school, so what you don't have is any experience or consistency. Every time we've used them it's been a cluster.

Excellent. Hunter, the technician was very knowledge and found a leak in the AC System. Presented me with all the options to help me make an informed decision to correct the problem.

The sales process was highly professional and low-pressure. We felt that the sales representative explained our different options well and we came away with the feeling that we had selected the correct heat pump unit for our home. McCrea is definitely not the lowest cost provider out there, but we were comfortable with that, due to the assurances that McCrea stands behind their work 110%, always getting things right the first time. Only later would we learn just how wrong we were to have placed our trust in that guarantee! The installation occurred during the winter months, and the heat pump performed flawlessly for the duration of the winter. The new, efficient heat pump greatly enhanced the comfort of our home and we were ecstatic with our purchase. But winter gave way to summer, and our customer satisfaction level went from ecstatic to frustrated. As occurs frequently in the Washington DC area, temperatures rose sharply and naturally we switched our heat pump over to cooling mode. The system indicated that it was dutifully cooling and we were excited to have a comfortable home. Approximately half an hour later, my family and I looked around at each other and said, "Wow, it sure it hot in here." So I walked over to the register and to my shock, it was emitting super hot air instead of cool air! Naturally, I called McCrea straight away, confident that they would bend over backwards to make things right. After all, the company prides itself in its so-called "McCreaway", which means "providing quality service the first time", and they charge premium prices because of it. It was then that I learned that they charge premium prices, but they do not really much care when the "McCreaway" system failed their customer. The best that they could do was to send a technician out 2 days later. 2 days in discomfort, of course. I suggested that their installation process failed and that it was hot out and that they should send a technician out that day to make it right. That's what our prior HVAC service provider would have done. Well, McCrea would not agree to do that, but were able to find a technician to fix it the following day, which I guess is better than nothing. But if that is the degree to which they stand behind their "McCreaway" guarantee, they should not charge premium prices for it. The technician came out the following day and confirmed that the system was emitting hot air instead of cool air due to an installation error on their part. He fixed the error and assured us that the system would function correctly going forward. I guess providing quality service the second time isn't as good as providing it the first time, but even premium providers can make a mistake every once in a while, and we were glad to have our system in proper working order. Or so we thought. A few hours after the technician left, the entire system ceased to function at all! The system wasn't cooling or running in any way, the thermostat was blank and not responding, we were again without cooling. Naturally, we called McCrea so that they could come back and fix it straight away since the project wasn't done right on either their first or their second attempt! And naturally, we were wrong about that. Despite our appeals for their technician to please get it right the third time as the system wasn't even circulating air and it was hot out, they did not do that, and instead offered to send someone out the next day. The technician is currently on our property and has informed us that the reason that the system wasn't working was due to another defect in the installation process. A water valve was installed by their company improperly and was leaking and the system disabled itself as a safety measure. While I appreciate the safety measure, I do not appreciate the slapdash workmanship that we have experienced from McCrea. He is currently fixing the water valve, but I have to admit that I lack full confidence that the system will be in proper working order after he completes his work. The bottom line is I feel like I paid premium pricing for premium service that was never delivered. We will obviously not be using McCrea in the future and will return to our prior HVAC service provider as more loyal customers than ever.

It went excellent. The technician Hunter Wheeler was prompt and fully prepared. He explained what he was doing as he went through his inspection of the systems. He is extremely professional, knowledgeable and courteous. All service people i encounter should be this good!

A representative came right away to explain the features of different models. We were able to schedule the installation within 2 days and the team showed up exactly on time. The installation went beautifully. Brian and James explained all the features and controls and were neat and clean. Totally professional! This could not have gone any better.

We've used them for a very long time and they've done everything including a replacement. We set regular checkups and they have been quite reliable since we moved in.

I don't remember anything negative about it. It took about 8 hours. They left the area clean. Overall, it was a good experience.

McCrea hit it out of the park on all fronts. I dealt initially with Mark as the manager/sales-rep, and not once did he try to up-sell me on any exotic units that exceeded the requirements of our home (other vendors did). He was honest, punctual, and gave me by far the best price of all vendors I solicited. Unlike others, he was willing to mix and match the units with me until we landed on the perfect price and configuration, and he was willing to negotiate over simple considerations (paying with check saved him the CC fee, and lowered my price as well). Other vendors seemed stubbornly unwilling to pursue these simple "win-win" scenarios, and some even told me they were offended I was shopping around and asking them to compete against the prices of their competitors. The technicians performing the install (Brian and Graham) we're just as wonderful. Performing replacements of two independent systems (we have a 4-level townhouse, requiring two independent systems), it was a big job to say the least. They arrived early in the morning (called ahead to ensure this would be fine), and finished right around 5-6pm. They were hard at work the entire time, entertained any questions we had along the way, and provided a wonderfully clear and concise walk-through of the systems and the job they had done once complete. I would recommend McCrea of Warrenton to anyone, and will definitely use them again the next time I need service or replacement.
