Technician was prompt and very professional. They do offer a lot of side additions to your HVAC but once you get past that the technician was very enthusiastic about making sure my system worked. He also took extra efforts to provide advice on maintaining the system between service checks. I give the professionalism, punctuality, and quality of services performed a solid A! One thing I don't like is the automatic renewal on their service contract; it should be an option not an automatic and it is why I'm giving them a B on price. I've only had one service with them and am waiting to see how they handle the rest of the service year; this is another reason the automatic renewal annoys me.

Thank you for your kind words. The automatic renewal is more for convenience than anything else. It eliminates the need for all the paperwork that is required to be sent back and forth in mail each year. It also protects your personal information. If your contract renews and you did not want to continue with the service your money would be refunded 100% if you had not had any inspections performed. Hope that clears it up for you, if not call your local office and ask to speak with the contract administrator. Thank you for the business and welcome to the McCrea family.

They performed our semi-annual HVAC 'check up.' Our Trane electric filter was malfuntioning. They did a very thorough diagnosis and found the problem (water near filter due to leaky drain pipe). The heatpump refrigerant was low, so the charge was for the refrigerant. McCrea is an OUTSTANDING company which delivers very professional customer service. My wife and I are very pleased with all their service!

Arrangement of time for checkup, followed up with phone call day of appointment, arrived promptly, provided recommendations for aid to heating system and went over overall health of system. Total time in and out was about 30 minutes. Service Tech was polite and wore protective gear not to mess up house. Would highly recommend for future.

McCrea was accommodating and removed the HVAC on day 1, then returned on day 3 to do the installation at my request. In the interim, the entire closet was repainted and looked pristine when they returned (there was an area needing painting that was close to impossible to reach with the unit in place). At installation, I made a point of telling the first guy to take care in the closet because it looked so good. Things seemed fine until I noticed that one of the guys took it upon himself to remove some former aluminum supports that had been attached to the wall, but were out of the way of the unit and were not going to be used to support this unit. I need to be clear - these pieces of aluminum were attached to the wall, below the area they were working in, were not in anyone's way and this guy just decided to tear them off. In the process he tore up the dry wall a little bit, and left two unsightly blights on each side of the closet of unpainted wall next to that previously newly painted, pristine wall. I WAS NOT PLEASED. When I asked for an explanation, I was told that he's asked in the past, and since those people said yes, he took it upon himself now to just remove them without asking. When I pointed out to him that I would not have said yes under any means, he shrugged it off. I really consider this blatant destruction of my property!! They also used 2x4s for support, which I've never seen before with an HVAC unit. Not that they won't support the unit, just something seemingly unconventional to me. When asked about the use of wood, I was told about how he's gone through training and knows what he is doing, and its strong and will be fine. I was honestly glad to see them leave by the time they were done, it was a seemingly patronizing attitude applied anytime I dared to ask a question. They were supposed to share the closet condition with the rep, who they said would reach back out to me, but I never heard anything and instead paid to have my contractor back in and complete the needed repair work and touch up in the closet at my expense. As for the unit itself -- I've already had a problem within three months of installation where the cooling feature refused to cool leaving the house close to 80, while the thermostat was set to a setting of 72. When I contacted them for a service call, it was the soonest we can fit you in is .... I just picked a date a few days hence that could work for me - new installation, broken system, figured they'd make effort to be there quickly, but definitely not. I've also asked for clarification at multiple points if the warranty would cover a service call over the weekend because the unit malfunctioned (it was a Sunday when I realized the AC wasn't cooling). They have yet to respond to that query - very unprofessional. They give a ridiculously huge window where you can sit and wait for the Tech. When I attempted to call in to find out where in the window I can expect the tech, so I could better manage my workday, I couldn't get through because their phone system was down - FOR HOURS. When I did get through the first time, the woman hung up because I didn't respond quick enough/she said she couldn't hear me. You'd think if your phone system was off, you'd make a bit of effort. When I did finally get through, I got the information I was looking for but have to say the attitude wasn't particularly pleasant. The phone system problem was theirs, mine, I'm not at fault here so don't take it out on me. Once the guy arrived, he sat at the external unit reading the materials for awhile, indicated he was new to McCrea (but had been in the hvac business for a long time), and couldn't find anything wrong. I kept a picture of the thermostat as proof of the issue given the insolent attitude of the installers, but this guy was more professional, albeit not seemingly as familiar as i would have like with the trane unit installed. The heat seems to work fine and the warranty is still in play if an issue does happen with the cooling, I'm just overall disappointed with the service and attitude I've encountered with this McCrea team. I could recommend them. UPDATE: I received a call from the rep as soon as this was posted and he wanted to make it right. The techs never reported back as they said they would (or left an indecipherable note, I can't recall). He will be paying extra attention to the installation and any service calls to ensure the service provided is at the appropriate levels. I do feel better after the discussion but remain disappointed with the technicians, I think McCrea can provide better service and will in future.

We are sorry that your experience was anything but exceptional. Verizon did have our phone system down for several hours which caused some problems for us. McCrea will be happy to extend your warranty if you have any concern that there is a problem we were not able to find. We have stood behind our name and the products we install for 77 years. If you would like a senior technician to inspect the installation or would like to extend your warranty please contact Denise Anderson at our office and we would be happy to do so free of charge.

McCrea had installed the initial Furnace when home was built in 1999. We purchased home in 2006 and continued to use McCrea for twice yearly servicing. Other than a few minor parts they kept it running smoothly. This year thou during spring maintenance they could not get the Air Condiioning Condenser to start. So I started getting quotes for full replacement. McCrea were the cheapest, mainly because of a promotion. We did not get a top of line replcement as knew we only planned to stay for 5-6 yrs. And as we had been using McCrea and trusted them decided to use hem again. Installation went well, no mess and everything is running great..... also seeing a difference in cooling performance and cost. Hoping to see same for heating.

I use McCrea for the routine servicing of my heating and cooling system. The tech does a good job, but has a tendency to push extras that may not be needed. When I brought up the topic of replacing my 20-year-old equipment with a modern energy efficient system in a couple of years he started telling me about low-cost, not very efficient systems. While he was trying to save me money in the short term he was not picking up on the fact I am concerned about environmental impact and long-term costs.

After spending three hours on the system, the technician told me that my compressor was broken, and that I needed a whole new outside system ($2200) but he would recommend that I get a whole new system ($4400). He also stated that my system was no longer under warranty. I was skeptical, so I did not authorize any work. I was able to find online that my system was still under warranty, as well as the fact that since the compressor had iced up, it was almost impossible that the compressor had gone bad in my unit. I had two other HVAC technicians come out after McCrea for my second/third opinions, and without telling them what the other recommended, both technicians stated that the thermostat was the issue. I was able to fix this with one of the other HVAC techs for $250 - as opposed to the $2K-$4K that McCrea wanted me to spend. I was supremely disappointed with the entire experience and would not recommend McCrea to anyone.
Description of Work: I called the company to provide diagnostic services on my HVAC system that had iced up the week before. The technician was polite, came on time, and spent three hours trying to find the issue with the system, all within the initial diagnostic fee, so that was a plus.

Kris of McCrea promptly answered my phone calls and came to my home. He looked at my previous HVAC unit, and gave me answers to various questions. While he told me that eventually my 24 year old HVAC would stop working, he let me know that it would not be possible to estimate when that date would come. Kris outlined pros and cons of getting a HVAC unit when the previous one was working, but likely to have a limited life. He did not pressure me to take a particular path and he answered my questions to my satisfaction. Kris talked to me about what I was looking and my timeline. He told me about a unit that was humidity controlled--so that it was possible that I could tolerate 80 degree heat in the summer, but would really like lower humidity. I ended up purchasing that unit, and it has provided a comfortable climate in my home. Sometimes many fans come on, and then as certain temperatures are reached, one of the fans shuts off. The technicians who installed the unit were polite and left the place clean. I was told that it could take up to 8 hours to install; they were finished in about 4 hours. Kris (the salesman) came by and checked in on the day of the installation. I asked McCrea for a quote because they were vetted by a HomeEnergy Program (LEAP) and Arlington County had vetted LEAP. From what I learned through LEAP, it appears that both installation and the unit are very important. The experience I had with McCrea would encourage me to recommend them to others.

I needed to add HVAC to a rental house and bid out the job. McCrea was the low bidder. They did the job promptly but the quality of the job was fair. It wasn't a bad job, but they did a number of things to keep their costs low that had I known about them beforehand I would have gone with another provider. For instance, in the bathrooms, the had the vents in the floors. This is against code. Similarly, they only built in one return for the whole ground floor, which in itself isn't terrible but it will impact the ability of the system to heat and cool the house. But the only return was at the floor level not ceiling. To cool a house this will be sub-par at best. After I pointed these things out to them they said they would come back to change things but didn't show up when they were supposed. After waiting, I ended up hiring another HVAC contractor to finish the job properly. The system that McCrea put in was not awful but was not what I expected and was certainly not up to the level of professionalism that I wanted.

They had to come out two times and did not fix the problem the first time; but charged me for putting in coolant the first time. Then when they did not fix it and had to come back they charged me more money the second time for putting in the heat pump evaporator coil. I used them because they put in the unit in past years; but I may not use them any more.

Excellent!! I did much research and got 6 bids before making my decision. All bids came out around the same cost give or take $1,000.00 dollars. Mark my sales/design agent was excellent. He explained all my options and the pros/cons of each option. He measured my home and vents/duct work of my old system. I went with Trane after much research and review. I went with Hybrid heat. This means I have a heat pump and my propane gas furance. The system will heat with heat pump until 38% then switch over to gas furance.(or) I can change my settings and use just the gas furance. I like the option of choice. I had 3 installers come to my home at 9am and they didn't leave until 6pm. They worked hard, tolerated all my quesitons, were polite and explained everything to me. I was given 10 yr warranty from Trane on parts/12 yr on compressor. McCrea gave me 5 yr warranty on labor and 1 yr maintence. I also had a pressure problem with my 2 yr old water heater. They added an expansion tank to my hot water heater, placed a tray under the water heater and replaced the release value. The workman ship looks so professional. I called Mark with a question I had and he called me back immediately. I am very pleased. I am shocked how quiet the system is. I can't even tell when its on. I love the outdoor and indoor sensors. It is currently 106% outside. They cleaned up all the mess they made, even sweep the floor. Great crew of installers, McCrea should be proud to have them as employees.

Overall, the experience has been okay. All they suggested to fix the size problem is to install another thermostat. I've tried to ask them to replace it several times, but there hasn't been any action. They haven't been responsive. We have a contract with them.
Description of Work: Installed an air conditioner & heater in both my mom's home & my home. In our home, everything works fine. We're happy with it. However, at my mom's home, they got a lower-cost unit, which only came in certain sizes. They upgraded the size, but now it’s too big of a unit for the home, which makes it too cold.

Installed new units for both levels of my house. They arrived on time, cleaned up after themselves and taught me how to use the new system. Have not had a problem with the system, even was able to bargain for 10 year service plan for free. The best installer they have is someone named Denver who really was fantastic, ask for him if possible. Not sure why other reviews are bad, maybe negative experiences motivate people to write comments.

Over a period of approximately 7 weeks, two technicians failed to identify and remove blockages in both the primary and secondary condensate drain lines from the attic A/C unit. After an additional week and after sustaining water damage to my home, a third technician finally confirmed and removed the blockages in both the primary and secondary condensate drain lines from the attic A/C unit. The water damage sustained as a result of the overflowing condensate from the attic A/C unit drip pan was not an accident, and was preventable, by using reliable proven methods for verifying clean drains. This is especially necessary and prudent when an A/C unit is located in an attic for a two zone system. The risk of extensive water damage is so much higher in an attic A/C unit compared to a basement A/C unit. When evaluating risk, both likelihood and consequences need to be considered when assessing service and maintenance procedures. The likelihood of a clogged drain line and overflowing condensate may be similar in both the attic and basement A/C units. The consequence of having the clogged drain line and overflowing condensate is so much more severe for an attic A/C unit, compared to a basement A/C unit. Because there are severe consequences of water damage to one?s home from having a faulty or failing attic A/C unit, more stringent service or maintenance procedures and precautions should be taken to ensure a high reliability of fault or problem detection and correction. In my opinion, this is where McCrea failed and was negligent in their maintenance and service procedures for an attic A/C unit. The only reasons why the clogged drains were not discovered in an earlier inspection, are either inadequate procedures or inadequately trained technicians. I assume that McCrea has trained technicians. McCrea?s procedures for servicing attic A/C units highlight their inattention to the risks of severe water damage to one?s home. The damage to my home, the inconvenience of high noise fans, and the unexpected unavailability of a bedroom for my 84 year old mother-in-law clearly demonstrates the impact of the negligence by McCrea in not doing all the right things in servicing the attic A/C unit. $1950 was the cost of home repairs from the A/C condensate water damage. I had a service contract with McCrea to provide seasonal inspections of the HVAC system in my home.
Description of Work: A McCrea technician arrived at our home on Sunday, 8/8/10, at approximately 9:50 AM. I had called on Friday evening and Saturday morning for emergency service to our top floor A/C unit that stopped functioning on the previous Thursday, 8/5/10. There are two asthmatics in our family who became symptomatic as a result of the high temperature in the bedrooms. I felt that their condition warranted emergency service. The service technician was escorted to the attic A/C unit where he proceeded to investigate the problem. After approximately 45 minutes, he reported his findings and repair to me. He described that the existing water level switch in the drip pan had tripped the power to the A/C unit. Apparently, this switch is very sensitive to the presence of small quantities of moisture or water, and is being replaced with a less sensitive float switch. I asked the technician where the source of the moisture or water originated in the attic that caused the existing switch to trip. He was elusive in his explanation and offered the possibility the a flue penetration in the roof could be leaking. I want to point out that on the service receipt, he makes an abbreviated statement, “Drain Clear.” On the following Tuesday, 8/10/10, my wife arrived home to witness water dripping from the ceiling to the island range and hardwood floors. I subsequently returned home and investigated the source of the water leak. After eliminating any obvious plumbing leaks, I decided to inspect the attic A/C unit for any evidence of leaking. Upon arrival, I immediately noticed that the drip pan had approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of water on the one side of the A/C unit. There was also evidence of water on the right side of the plywood flooring that supports the A/C unit. I proceeded to empty the water from the drip pan with a bucket and, in the meantime, the dripping water from the kitchen ceiling stopped. On the next morning, 8/11/10, I called McCrea and informed the manager of the water leakage problem in our home and the amount of water in the drip pan. I knew that the drip pan would not contain any water under normal A/C operation. He responded by saying that he would send another technician to our home to investigate the problem. I requested that the service be scheduled for Friday since I would be home. I intended to check the attic A/C drip pan each night to ensure that any water collected is removed. On Friday morning, 8/13/10, the technician arrived at around 9:15. After his inspection of the attic A/C unit and having the knowledge of the recent events in our home, he believed that the primary condensate drain line was plugged. He also planned to check for any blockage in the secondary drain line. After doing the initial actions of pouring vinegar and hot water in the condensate drain lines and attempting to hear any liquid flow, he determined that the primary condensate drain line from the attic A/C unit was plugged. He subsequently used pressurized nitrogen to blow out a significant amount of debris from the primary condensate line, that incidentally and accidently erupted into our basement. The secondary condensate drain line from the attic A/C unit also had a blockage that restricted the flow. It was clear that the clogged condensate drain lines resulted in an overflow condition of the drip pan. The technician subsequently removed the condensate from the drip pan from the accessible left side of the A/C unit.

Response from McCrea Heating & Air Conditioning Services of VA
McCrea submitted all service records, documentation to our Insurance provider. After their evaluation of the events that transpired they denied the claim and demmed that McCrea personal did not act negligently. I am happy to provide this documentation if necessary.

Bottom line: It took five months to get the estimate. I expected to receive it in May for a summertime replacement; when I called in the fall I was told it had been left at my door. I requested a new estimate, waited all day for the visit, and then waited AGAIN for the estimate. After a couple of weeks I called again, told them if they didn't want to sell a system to me, I'd be happy to buy it elsewhere. I finally got the price -- but without any information about the products they were proposing to sell me or the work they intended to do under the contract. The price was not competitive.
Description of Work: Provided estimate on new HVAC after repairing old system twice.

David Wilson came to our house to look at our current heating & ac system and the size of our house so he could give us a bid on a new heating & ac system. He responded to my many e-mail and telephone questions and was very patient over the rather lengthy period of time that it took for us to make a decision. George & Tony, the two men who installed the furnace, ac, & air purifier were very professional. There was some difficulty finding a spot to vent the furnace and George came up with a good solution. The next work day after the installation George called to find out if everything was okay and whether we were satisfied with the venting solution.
Description of Work: We received a home visit and bid for installing a new furnace, ac, & air purifier. After we signed the contract, the company installed the furnace, ac & air purifier.
