I purchased a coupon on Angie's List. The company emailed me the same day to set up my appointment and was able to come out within 3 business days. My appointment was from 8-11 AM. A few minutes after 8 they called to say they were on the way. They were at the house by 8:30. Service was performed professionally. Would recommend.

. My AC unit was freezing up inside and outside, I contacted McCrea and they scheduled an appointment using the Angies List special of $49 diagnostic. The first technician arrived and said he didn't see anything leaking but he noticed I was low in coolant. He filled me up and all said and done, I paid about $200. Two days later, I was frozen again and didn't have any AC what so ever. I called back and another tech was dispatched to take a look. The second technician saw that I had a major leak in my coil and showed me all of the oil at the bottom of the pan. I needed a new coil. The system is relatively new and the part was under warranty but it was complicated getting the company to honor it since McCrea did not install the unit. Once this was all worked out (by McCrea) it took about another week or so to get the part. Once we had the part, I had to schedule another appointment. This took another week. Unfortunately for me, even the part was covered under warranty, everything else was not. McCrea did credit the initial $200 towards replacing the coil and in the end I paid $1200. This seems a little pricey to me for a warranty part replacement (research showed this amount to be fair) but the work performed was/is top notch and all of the technicians who came out to my house were very friendly and professional. Aside from the downtime of my AC system in the hottest part of the summer, I could not have asked for better service. I would absolutely recommend McCrea to my friends and neighbors.

I had been monitoring the slow decline of my elderly furnace (~25 years old) for a couple of years and it broke again this week. Repair costs were estimated to be a meaningful fraction of a new unit so I decided this was The Year. I elected to replace the whole system, as the AC compressor was also about 15 years old. I chose McCrea for several reasons: First, I had been less than thrilled with other local service providers and was still looking for a company that would be my long-term go-to choice. Second, the on-line reviews were positive. Third, they've been in business in the area for a long time (40+ years). Finally and most important, a friend with some knowledge of HVAC systems had recently had a good experience with them, where they did a good job and, unlike two other vendors he spoke with, they didn't try to up-sell him a system he didn't need. I've run into that over the years and it's really a red flag. Given that the furnace was dead and the weather was cold, I was sort of in a hurry and McCrea was quite responsive in working with me to do something pretty quickly. My old unit died on Tuesday; the new system was in and running Friday afternoon--with one day of that being my research / decision time. Said research indicated that their pricing was competitive. The two-man installation team came right when they said they would--important because I had to juggle this in the context of a busy work schedule of my own--and gave what proved to be accurate estimates of installation time. They were pleasant and patient with my multiple questions. I have an engineering background and know enough about these systems to determine if somebody doesn't know what they're talking about. These folks did know what they were talking about. I am quite pleased with the installation. I'm picky about such things and they really did a nice job with the details: wires routed carefully and secured properly, strain relief on the ductwork itself, careful labelling, a nice little holder for the manuals, proper heat-shield installation, nicely routed and secured gas feed line, a new base for the AC compressor leveled nicely, careful clean up at the end, a thorough walk-through of the system with me when they were done, etc. Bottom line, it looks great and would indicate that they handled the details that I CAN'T see professionally. This was particularly important to me because my on-line research indicated that long-term system reliability doesn't correlate with major brand name--that is, they're all pretty good and roughly the same--but has a strong correlation with the quality of the installation. So...bottom line: The system is humming along nicely and I'm typing in 71-deg splendor (it's 25 deg outside). Nobody likes to write a $5k check but I do feel as if I got good value for the investment. McCrea is off to a good start on what I hope will be a long-term business relationship.

I purchased the $79 Furnace Clean and Check from Angie's List. Our heater was intermittently turning on and emitting cool air and attempting to turn on, but the burner would repeatedly go out. I know I eventually need to buy a new furnace but I was hoping to have the burner cleaned and hold off the purchase until later. My service from McCrea was promptly scheduled for the day after I purchased it. Jeremy called 30 minutes before arriving and was courteous and professional. He confirmed that the burner simply needed to be cleaned. He also removed my filters so I could clean them. He noted that the heater and vents were very dirty and made a few suggestions but didn't try to up-sale me on anything. My heater is working perfectly and because of Jeremy's service, I would recommend him for his honesty and efficient service.

Our condo assoc. requires that we get our furnace and hot water heater inspected every two years for insurance purposes. Scott arrived on time and WOW! did he give us a detailed inspection! He explained everything he was doing and why he was doing each inspection. He had all the right equipment to do the job correctly. Explained what we should be looking out for in the future(especially in the water heater area). He was very professional, neat and great personality. We've used McCrea before and we will certainly use them again. We may have never settled on McCrea if it hadn't been for Angies list.

Called ahead when he was 15 minutes away to say he was on the way and would be early, was that OK with me. Very friendly and professional demeanor, asked a few questions about the system and date of last service. Unit is 9 years old and had never been serviced. I knew the draft inducer fan was failing, but before making that repair I wanted the system checked out to ensure it didn't have other major problems. The tech checked everything out and made a few recommendations. In addition to the draft inducer, the motor start capacitor was getting weak, and the flame sensor was worn and dirty. He explained that when the blower motor run capacitor fails it will often cause the blower motor to overheat and fail, and recommended replacing the capacitor (a $2 part at Home Depot ) to protect the much more expensive blower motor. On the flame sensor, he cleaned it, but said its life was limited and predicted that if anything fails on the furnace this winter, that will be the part. Since I am comfortable working on furnaces I thanked him for his advice, then ordered the capacitor, flame sensor and draft inducer online and installed them myself. I have two rental properties in Culpeper and will use these guys again.

.Technician arrived and asked for paper towels. He then went to furnace room and saw the boiler and stated he had never worked on a boiler. He stated that they should have sent someone who works on boilers and that they have a couple of guys who do. I suggested rescheduling but he instead proceeded with someone on the phone. He wiped off some dust with the paper towels, vacuumed the burners a little and used some kind of thin sand paper and said he cleaned off something underneath. I asked if he was going to oil anything and he said no. I asked if he was going to check the radiators and he said no. I now will call another service who works on boiler/radiator systems to have the service done correctly. Though I had called before making the appointment to ensure that they worked on boilers, and the Technician said they have a couple of guys who work on boilers, the message written back to me was that they don't do boilers. Therefore, I did not receive the service of a qualified person for which I paid. Please see messages in which I confirmed that they were going to service my boiler/radiator system after I purchased the service based on calling and being told that they do service boilers. I was told by the person who took my call and then again by the Technician that they do service boilers and now I am being told in their reply to my message that I didn't mention boiler and that they don't do boilers. The proof shows otherwise.

The service call went fine. The technician couldn't have been nicer. He fixed the problem and even took pictures of the ceiling damage. The problem came afterward. Because there was damage to my ceiling and because I wanted a better understanding of what happened I reached out to the HR person, Benita Kemper. I talked to her once and asked if she could find out for me and she said that she would and that she would get back to me. She never called back. I think because I mentioned the damage to my ceiling is why I have never heard from her. When I tried to call her again I was put into her voicemail so I left another message, but never heard back. I honestly was just asking. It was never my intention to take anything past our conversation because in truth they are not the manufacturer and so I could see their side. I wish I had never brought that question up because what I really needed from them was their professional help with knowing how to move forward, but I could not get anyone to call me back. I reached out to the person who sold the system to me and never heard back from him either. After 16 years of being a faithful customer, I couldn't even get the courtesy of a call back. They wouldn't even just talk to me. I guess they are a big company and what is one customer to them. So I will move on to a new HVAC company, but I just want other customers to know that if everything is routine it may go well with this company, but if you have a serious issue they are not the professionals that I thought they were.

Didn't pressure us to buy the additional part. AC has been working without issue since (about a month now).

The skilled technicians, Greg and Chris, arrived within the time frame expected. They promptly began working to remove a 14 year old gas water heater and replaced it with a new 75 gallon gas water heater along with all the equipment that brings the installation into current code with the county. I was consulted regarding an attachment that could be included within the installation cost for a future addition of a humidifier and the attachment was installed. Upon my inquiry on the cost of a humidifier, an estimated cost of a humidifier was shared, along with suggestions for pursuing the best price for the unit. Greg and Chris completed the work in about 2.5 hours and checked to ensure hot water was available through the home. The new system was explained to me and a photo of the unit with directions for turn-off values were provided upon request. They shared with me an observation regarding the main water value to my older home and suggested a plumber replace it in the coming years. Greg and Chris left the work area clean and I was very pleased with their work.

I am pleased with the yearly service provided to me by McCrea. I have been with them for a number of years and always find the company to be highly responsive to my needs. The work done on this visit was reflective of the care received over the years. Adam was polite, respectful, and professional as he went about his work. He carefully explained what he was doing and addressed my questions. He made a recommendation of maintaining a higher AC temperature as I awaited a plumber to solve a drain problem so that I could be comfortable in the home with hot temperatures outside.
Description of Work: A technician (Adam) was scheduled to come in several days to do a fall check-up of my HVAC system under my yearly Bronze contract agreement and the company promptly rescheduled this check-up when I called because of a water drain problem that needed immediate attention. He checked all systems (heating and AC) and changed the filter. Then he helped me diagnose the source of the problem for follow-up with a plumber. Adam was prompt, professional, and careful about his work. He also contacted the company on my behalf to gather information to review for possibly getting a new hot water tank.

McCrea's diagnostic tech was really personable and seemed to really know his job and was very thorough in explaining and showing what was going on. At no time did we feel we were being lied to or taken advantage of. After the initial diagnosis, he encouraged us to call around and get several estimates before deciding on who we wanted to use. I made the calls and had 3 different companies come out, all with high Angie's List ratings, and after all was said and done, liked McCrea for their straightforward way of dealing with you and never feeling like we were being "upsold" on something we didn't need or want. So we scheduled service with them. We had a Trane T4TTX6036H1000A AC unit and matching evaporator coil installed, along with a wi-fi thermostat, the existing coolant line flushed and a new AC platform installed on the side of our house. The Aprilaire steam humidifier was also installed at the same time on the basement unit but was unable to be wired that same day due to our circuit breaker box being full and needing a new sub-panel installed, which they came back to do about 10 days later. Kris Kimmel, the estimator, was very helpful and explained how everything worked and what to expect and made recommendations based on the layout, size and needs for our house. He was very thorough. The installers were fabulous and very neat and worked efficiently. It was a tough job, climbing in and out of our very hot attic and going back and forth to the outside units until the job was done. They even stayed a little late to help get the new thermostat programmed and working. The crew that came back to do the wiring for the humidifier (a couple were the same men) were also fabulous and were in and out quickly and cleanly. I will be using McCrea again when our downstairs system finally dies, since they've made a normally unpleasant experience as good and rewarding as they possibly could. Their prices are reasonable, especially when compared to other local companies and their attention to detail and willingness to walk us through step by step was wonderful. I will most likely also bring them back to do our yearly system checks.
Description of Work: Our upstairs AC unit quit working so we needed someone to come check it. McCrea had the $49 per system check special, so we had them come out to diagnose the issue on the upstairs unit and do a checkup on the downstairs system. It turned out the upstairs system had a catastrophic coolant leak and was completely empty of freon. This was troubling because the house is only 9 years old. But it was un upper-grade builder quality unit, so it was sort of to be expected. The end result is that we needed to at least replace the outdoor AC unit and the evaporator coil in the attic furnace unit. We also decided we wanted to add a whole house steam humidifier to the downstairs system because it is very dry in the winter.

Walter was prompt, professional and very knowledgable. He answered all of my questions -- this was my first experience with a failing unit. He installed a new motor in the attic system and noticed it was loud. After trying to live with it, I asked for it to be replaced. They ordered a new motor and it was installed in a timely manner. It is quieter yet noticeable from the 3rd floor, if you listen. It was the cheapest motor and perhaps that is the reason. I would recommend them and Walter to anyone.

The technician called to his manager to check on something which he told me and was told that it would be better to perform the repair another way. The original way he described to repair the AC unit may have caused more harm than good according to the manager. Much to his credit, he did get the manager's opinion. My concern was, had he not, it may not have gone well. He performed the inspection. Gave me a diagnosis and the price to repair the system. I felt I needed a second opinion and chose to go that route.
Description of Work: Bought the $49. offer on Angie's List to have the AC looked at as the upper floor unit was no longer cooling the space adequately. (I have used this company before when I moved my AC units. At that time, they sent a very seasoned technician). This last time, it was a much younger technician. While he was polite and professional, I felt that I would have gotten more information from my previous technician and therefore had what I needed in order to make a good choice in terms of repair or replace.

The overall experience was very good. They installed a new Carrier Infinity 80% gas furnace and 19 SEER air conditioning system. I went with Carrier because it was supposed to be a very quiet system and because there was an $1,100 rebate in effect for the entire system. The price cited is after the rebate. The whole process was pretty smooth. It only took about 4 hours to remove the old system and install the new one. The technician went over everything with me. He gave me all the information I needed to apply for the rebate. I waited to write the review to make sure the rebate came in without a hitch and it did. The only negative comment I have is that communication could have been better. I was told that the system would be installed 6/19 and that someone would be in touch with more details. I didn't hear from anyone and when I called the office the day before to confirm that I was scheduled, no one could tell me. I had to leave a message for the salesman, who it turned out wasn't in the office that day. But, as I said, the overall experience was very positive and I feel that I got a very good deal on the system.

Maybe this company or some technicians are good. I received regular customer service from this company's office employees, but that not what I paid for. I paid for checking my AC unit, which was scheduled between 11 and 2. At about 10 am technician calls me and says he will be there in 10-15 minutes. I asked him to be there at the time that I scheduled it for, which is between 11 and 2 not 10:15 (!), simply because I'm not at home. He said maybe I scheduled for that time, but he is just a tech and he finished his service call and want to come by right now. I said, "no it's not possible, I want to see what you do!". He said that he will then go to another service call and after that he will give me a call one hour in advance before stopping by. At that time. I got in my track and started going home.... at about 10:45, my wife calls me and asked if I called HVAC service tech. I said yes I did. At 11 o'clock he calls me back and said that he stopped by 2 minutes ago and he checked my outside unit and it's out of refrigerant. I said how is it possible that unit stops working and looses refrigerant at the same time? I don't believe it, and why is he there working on the unit, when I told him not to do that unless I'm present.... 10 minutes later I arrived, technician already left, I asked my wife what did this tech do, she said that she doesn't know, he didn't even come in, just stayed outside. Apparently he didn't even turn on thermostat. HVAC companies charge $60 per pound for 410A refrigerant and 25 lbs jag delivered to your door cost $98 on ebay. Is it possible that tech released the Freon to sell me some of its own plus labor? I think yes, it's possible, specially if read reviews when techs constantly want to sell you something (because their are on encouraged to do so). Did he do it? I hope not, I didn't see it. But I can't give this company A and 5-star rating for working on my unit without my permission.
