Bedrock Foundation Systems Inc

Foundation Repair, Masonry, General Remodeling,

About us

Bedrock Foundation Systems Inc., established in 1998, solves homeowners’ structural repair problems. We are dedicated to helping you determine the actual problems you’re facing with your home. We inspect your home, evaluate the problem, and determine the best solution for you. We explain what is wrong and the different options for repair. We specialize in structural repair. This means we work from the foundation up through the house to the roof, including the chimney to determine the extent of the damage and the potential impact that may occur in the future. All of our contracts are “Guaranteed Maximum Price” to accomplish the work specified. This means that if additional repairs are necessary, it is covered under the contract. You are relying on us to know our job, so you should not be penalized. We maintain a sufficient number of trained/qualified crews to start work on your home within 2 weeks from the time of your approval. The basic crew is usually 3 technicians, and at various stages the crew size will be increased to facilitate the schedule to complete your repairs on time. Occasionally we sub-contract the specialized areas of the project. IE: The repair of the brick cracks, other cosmetic blemishes, or the concrete work on sidewalks, patios and driveways. Otherwise our own people do the work. We work closely with outside Structural Engineers to evaluate the problems with your home and to inspect our work to avoid any conflict of interest. Bedrock Foundation Systems provides a “Turn Key Service” for your convenience. We look forward to hearing from you to discuss your concerns.

Jason was easy to talk with and he appeared concerned to deliver the best service available. I would recommend others to use this service for their remodeling projects.
Description of Work: I was provided an estimate for my BR floor problem but I decided not to go ahead with the contract proposed due to the involved nature of the repair for that particular problem and the cost at this time.

Response from Bedrock Foundation Systems Inc
Ms. [removed members name], We apologize for the misunderstanding regarding your issue; however, our company description here on angieslist.com clearly states the following: “We work closely with outside Structural Engineers to evaluate the problems with your home and to inspect our work to avoid any conflict of interest.” As contractors we feel like you get the most honest service by not having our own Structural Engineers on staff so the report comes from an outside source to assure you that you are getting a professional evaluation and not one that is being altered for profit reasons. The Big Deal you purchased from us would allow us to come give you a free inspection and estimate and provide crack monitors. This inspection and estimate would let you know what work we feel is or isn’t needed to your home and then if you decide not to do the work now we would install the crack monitors to observe your problem over time. However, if you decided to move forward with our estimate and sign a contract we then would bring in a Structural Engineer to write up a report which we then follow. Again referring to our description, our estimates/contracts come with a Maximum Price Guarantee so even if the Structural Engineer says that more work is needed that we wrote up in the contract it doesn't affect your price. “You are relying on us to know our job, so you should not be penalized.” Again, we apologize for the misunderstanding and if you are still interested we are more than happy to come out and discuss your foundation issues and provide you with a detailed estimate if we feel any work would need to be done. Thank you for your time, Jason P Burns

Jason came out to inspect the cracks I saw in the brick exterior of my house. He was prompt, polite and very thorough in inspecting all around the house. He also checked the crawlspace and gave me advice on keeping rain water away from the foundation. He said the cracks in the brick were probably due to the foundation settling and would require foundation supports to correct the problem but that it did not need to be done right away.
Description of Work: Inspected the exterior bricks and first floor interior walls.

The service was good. They did everything that they said they were going to do and gave us a really thorough quote. We knew we had some issues and they kind of told us how we can address them. They have a good follow through. They came out and did the initial inspection when they said they would. They e-mailed out a detailed quote and then called and followed-up to make sure we did not have any questions about the quote. They have a good customer service.

Jim and Jason took great care with their assessments, and actually told me I didn't need to fix the issue for which I had originally called them; They suggested that I create a photo history of the area of concern over time so I could see if/when things changed. At my request, they looked at other cracks in our walls, and so inspected the exterior foundation and crawled under the house to inspect the foundations beneath. When the work actually started, every day they called before coming and came when expected. The crew was delightful; the team members respected and enjoyed one another -- I could hear them laughing and cooperating as they worked under the house. They took before and after pictures of the under-the-house work for me, and using the photos they explained all that they had done. They cleaned up beautifully after the work was done. There was one oily-hand-prints area that they missed on our clapboard siding when they were preparing to leave. I mentioned it to Jason a day or so later and said I'd clean it up, but Jason insisted that I leave it for Bedrock Foundation Systems to take care of. Soon after, I noticed that the clapboard siding was clean as a whistle.

Since buying this home 5 years ago, this was our 3rd attempt to repair a sagging and buckling floor area around a load bearing wall. This time I researched companies and interviewed several. We selected Bedrock based on their Angie's List reviews, their repair recommendation and process to repair, the length of time their lead employees have been employed with their company, their understanding of city code and permitting, and their financial payment installment relative to completion of the work. Each employee of Bedrock was dressed appropriate, polite, respectful of us and our home and respectful of their employer. This was a hard labor job and their was no complaining or slow work even with adverse weather conditions. Although we already knew the positive and the negatives of the repair, Bedrock walked around the home pointing out the stress areas that may be affected to make sure we all were on the same page about what may appear such as cracks, doors opening and closing and a change in the wood flooring. As such we were prepared when they occurred and all easy fixes for us. We still have another area of our home that requires foundation repair and after this repair settles and Bedrock returns to inspect the progress of the work, we will move to the next area with Bedrock as our foundation company.

It took about a week to complete the job. The team at Bedrock did an exceptional job. Jason and his crew members were knowledgeable and professional. There was great care taken to ensure that there was no yard damage. The 6 piers were installed and all of the brickwork on the foundation was repaired. With the lifetime warranty that Bedrock provides and the quality of the work which was provided I feel secure that the foundation of my home is now solid. I would highly recommend the services of Bedrock to anyone in need of foundational repair.
Description of Work: As a result of settling the foundation of my home had developed cracks leading to drywall damage inside. Jason Burns recommend 6 helical piers be placed to provide the needed support. This recommendation was further confirmed by a structural engineer.

Jason said that I don't have to worry. The sag on the floor is because of settling. He advised me to measure the cracks on the wall regularly and to call if there's a big change. He has sharp eyes and he even went in the crawl space to inspect the foundation. Thank you Jason. .

Went brilliantly. Jason went through the house inside and out with what was obviously a well-practiced eye, explaining every detail clearly and concisely. Turns out there don't appear to be any major foundation problems. He advised photographing the small crack with a ruler and watching it regularly for any increase in size and increasing the length of drain pipes. They're researching the Dryvit issue which was new to them. Very happy with the whole process.

I called Bedrock Foundation systems after seeing a number of existing cracks expand and new ones appear in the walls and ceiling over what seemed like a short period of time. Also, an interior door would no longer fully close. I called Jason, who was very reassuring, and he agreed to come out to give me a free evaluation and estimate. Jason looked the house over very carefully; inside, outside, and in the crawlspace. He took time to explain the settling cracks and showed me that they had been repaired previously, which I could see once he pointed it out. There was only one area of structural concern in the master bedroom area, which he said needed another support joist. Jason was clear about what work should be done and what was optional--there was absolutely no sales pressure whatsoever. The two workers who arrived on the appointed day were very polite and completed the job in a few hours, checking several times to see if the interior door was able to close. I am pleased with this company and would use these folks again.

Based on my reading of other Angie's List reviews of the various companies in the Hampton Roads area that do foundation and structural repair work, I was pretty sure at the start that I wanted Bedrock Foundations to do this work. I had a similar job done by another company in 1980's on another house, and I knew from that experience that this job would require a company that understood the peculiarities of older (pre-1900) homes. Also, I could see where some repairs had been previously attempted on a number of the joists in my current house, but this work had not been done properly. All of that work had to be removed. I didn't want to take a chance on a similar "fly-by-night" operation. When I met with Jason to discuss the proposed work, it became clear to me that Bedrock Foundations is one of only a few firms with the expertise to do this type of work correctly. Bedrock Foundation's price was fair (and contained a not-to-exceed provision), the work was fully described in the proposal, and the work was executed as described. Bedrock Foundations obtained all permits required by the city of Norfolk. The crew showed up on time each morning, and performed their work professionally. Jim and Jason came by as necessary to resolve issues and to progress the work. In addition, I statused the work each day and contacted Bedrock Foundations if I had questions or issues. Either Jason or Jim would quickly respond and we were always able to resolve the issue satisfactorily the same day. Although the crew worked industriously, the total task took about two weeks longer than expected. I attribute this to the difficulty of maneuvering 12 foot long beams in a confined space. About a month after the work was completed, some minor drywall cracks appeared where Bedrock Foundations had raised the floors. This was expected and was less than I had anticipated. I am very pleased with the results, and would gladly recommend Bedrock Foundations to anyone who plans to do this sort of work on their house.
Description of Work: Bedrock Foundations repaired the floor joists under the kitchen and dining room and installed additional support pillars for the dining room. The house was built around 1900 and most of the joists had experienced dry rot at the ends of the timbers where they entered the foundations, causing them to drop about 1/2 inch. All repairs to the joists consisted on installing rough cut 2 inch x 12 inch "sisters" that were the same size as the original beams, removing and reinstalling bricks in the crawl space and basement walls to allow the "sisters" to be supported by the original structure, raising the floors as much as possible to minimize the uneven floor surface, and replacing damaged insulation and closing up the area after they completed the work. Bedrock Foundations repaired 15 floor joists under the kitchen, 12 joists under the dining room, and 3 more in the hall between the kitchen and the front of the house. In addition, Bedrock Foundations installed three piers and a support beam that ran the length of the dining room (approximately 16 feet in length), and installed two additional piers at the back of the dining room to stabilize the floor where it had begun to settle. The piers and the support beam in the dining room were required to raise the center of the room and eliminate the bounce in the floor caused by the excessive span of the original joists in this room.

After an initial miscommunication on the date for Jason to come by and look at my house which was quickly resolved, he was on time for the appointment and did an excellent job assessing the current condition of my foundation and how it affected my house. He recommended not performing any of his services at the time as nothing warranted stabilizing or correcting. He said he would be happy to come by again in the future to determine if the situation worsened and what he could do to ensure the stability of my foundation. He also offered to look at the pilings for the deck I was having built to determine if his company could help ensure the stability of my deck. Overall, I was very pleased with Jason's visit to my house and he is my first choice for any future foundation work. I contacted 4 companies to assess my foundation, and Jason provided the best response and best service. I definitely recommend him to anyone looking to get an assessment of their foundation.

As facilities maintenance coordinator for West Point Hunt Club, I was tasked to solicit bids for the repair of a foundation problem that was causing cracking in the block walls of the house. Bedrock Foundation Systems, Inc. was the first of three contractors that I contacted. Jim and Jason met with me on a Saturday and were on time, despite the fact that their company is based in Virginia Beach and our club is in the West Point area. Communication with them has been excellent and prompt. Both gentlemen were very cordial and took the time to thoroughly explain the cause of our problem, the method and materials they were going to use and also answered all of the questions I had for them. After meeting with the other two contractors I requested quotes from, they were the only one that took the time and were able to fully explain the conditions and the work necessary to re-stabilize the house. The scope of their work not only included the foundation lift, but also grinding out old mortar joints, tuck-pointing the mortar joints and replacing any cinder blocks cracked during the course of the job, not so with the others. Bedrock handled all permits, called Miss Utility and also consulted with a Structural Engineer before any work was performed. The contract was sent promptly and was written in terms that were concise, easy to understand and explained the work in every detail. There were no "escape" clauses nor any hidden/overage costs at all, just a promise to perform all work as stated in a workman-like and professional manner. Bedrock is a family owned and operated company and it shows, even in the contract they submit. The workers came, in force, performed all of the work in half of the estimated time! The job site was clean, no trash or debris left behind. Great job! We have noticed some slight cracking in the block work around the area that was lifted and understand this is due to the building "settling in" after the lift. We notified Bedrock of this and have told them that we will give the building a month or so before calling them back for repairs. They concurred and thanked us for our patience and understanding. I am fully confident they will be as prompt with repairs as they were in every other aspect of the process. Bedrock Foundation Systems, Inc was the highest bidder on this project, however, they were the only contractor to propose a turn-key job. No having to deal with a mason, no questions about who is responsible for any repairs or warranty claims, lifetime by the way, just a good "gut" feeling we have chosen the right contractor for our needs! Thanks, Jim, Jason and all employees at Bedrock who took part in the job. A job well done! If you are ever in need of this type of work, you owe it yourself to contact this company for a bid. Thanks Angie's List!!

I was very pleased with the responsiveness and professionalism of the gentleman who evaluated my situation.
Description of Work: I experienced a crack in the drywall on a horizontal cross-beam in the ceiling of my ranch-style house. I called Bedrock and they sent out an evaluator at my convenience for a free evaluation and estimate. The evaluator performed a thorough inspection of not only the crack itself, but surrounding walls and the attic above the beam. Fortunately for me, my problem required only a cosmetic repair, as it was not in a load-bearing wall and the best plan was to continue watching this area of the beam for further deterioration. This was made clear to me by the evaluator and the cosmetic repair was not something that the evaluator automatically offered me an "estimate" for. He also evaluated my foundation for any settling and stated that there were no unusual indications, just normal wear-and-tear. When I mentioned that there were other companies that were coming out to evaluate this problem, the evaluator even stated that if the other companies did not agree with his evaluation (by recommending unnecessary repairs), I could call him to have him go over their findings with him. I felt that this was not an effort to cover himself for anything he might have missed, but rather a good-faith effort to ensure I was not being ripped off. As a validation, the other company that evaluated this issue agreed with his findings and recommended the same course of action (without any prompting or information from me about other companies having already evaluated the situation). I am confident that if I had needed an actual repair, I would have gotten a fair and accurate evaluation of the needed items. As I needed no repairs, I cannot say anything about pricing or workmanship.

Very well. Jason inspected the house and had a very good grasp of the foundation problems I have been experiencing. We had a little communications hiccup one day that caused some temporary distress, but overall, Jason kept me informed as the project progressed. They had to remove a lot of old growth landscaping from around my foundation, but they filled in the holes and raked the area clean. My house is now level and the floors that Jason addressed are rock solid. Unfortunately, I found other areas of the house that needed attention due to live floors. I have contracted with Bedrock to fix those too. Bedrock pulled all permits for the town and county (Smithfield requires both). This ended up taking several days, but Jason stayed on them and successfully got the job done. Overall, I am very pleased.

I called Mr. Burns for a second opinion regarding a foundation problem (or so I was told). After a thorough inspection under my house, it was determined that I had a sub flooring issue, not a foundation problem, that could be remedied for considerably less money (we are talking thousands of dollars). Since he did not perform this type of work, I wanted to compensate him for his valuable time and advice, but he declined my offer. Not only did Mr. Burns save me a lot of unnecessary expense but he has reminded me that there are reputable and trust worthy people out there working hard to earn a living and not trying to rip you off. I have read the other reviews and found that my experience with Mr. Burns is not isolated. This man is the real deal. Hopefully, I won't need his services in the future but if I do, I'll be sure to call him and I hope you will too.

We called Bedrock Foundation after being told by another contractor that our foundation had shifted due to house settling. We spoke with Jason on Saturday and Sunday and we set up an appointment for Monday morning. He was on time and very informative. Jason carefully inspected the interior and exterior, including taking measurements underneath the house in the crawl space. The result was that he determined our house had not settled and the foundation had not shifted. He addressed our specific concerns (what we were told and thought were indications of settling) and provided viable reasons for the discrepancies we cited. He recommended that we have a reliable sheet rock installer redo taping the walls that are showing small cracks at the seams on the interior and for future prevention measures, he recommended that we have extensions or a French drain system installed for our gutter downspouts to keep water as far from the footings as possible. He was very knowledgeable, good at explaining, and demonstrated outstanding customer service. Jason even gave us reliable contacts to carry out his recommendations! If we ever end up with any type of foundation problems, we will call Bedrock first and we recommend that to anyone else that is facing the possibility.

To keep it brief they put in the piers under the foundation , great. they have an engineer bless what they did. Meantime my flashing which was supposed to be foxed was had problems which they partially addressed when I had them back but they ignore me and are always outta town when I call with problems (since they now have my money, it sems to me). They told me I needed only very little on the iinside of the chimnety but they don't do that kind of work. Turns out , best case is $800 on the inside but the chimney guys will not guarantee the work until I address the excessive sway (2 inches) in my chimney. Bedrock looked at it and they say...there is n excessive sway. Though they acknowledge that we may need some straps to be installed between the mortar totabilize the chimney, they don't get back to me to address anything. They say each time they will call in a few days and I wait a month and then I call them and get the same thing. So their big selling point that they will fix the problem even if it costs more than the estimate ....don't believe it because they just tell you that everything is great and you should be satisfied. Same with my low spot in my kitchen. When what they did , did not address the problem i complained about , it came out that they understood my concern as some other problem that also existed but that my problem was not structural. Unfortunataely their analysis of my problem was not so indepth before they were commisioned to do the work. Then they spent a day doing makeshift after thoughts to adress it and finally told me it's just the sub par way my floor was installed at construction. I should have been told that before they accepted that add on of thejob. Actually, I ight consider hiring them again if they weren't blowing me off about my disatisfaction with the job I spent $9200 for overall. As it stands I am hiring someone else to finish what they refuse to address. If they read this and handle up I will consider retracting this. Also , they worked on my hearth but the motar doesn't match and I had to tell the laborer they had do the masonry to push a brick in that he was gonna leave sticking waty out. Same guy that doesn't know how t do the flashing that they reassured me at the begining that they would fix.
Description of Work: I had my chimney leaning on the side of the house and foundation rotated in the back wall. Also I asked about my floor in the kiiitchen being uneven and had extra joists installed and some lift in a low spot. The chimney had helical piers installed and was jacked back in place . Back wall had piers installed as well.

Your right, I dropped the ball about coming back the 3rd time to look at the chimney, I will call you to set up an appointment for the week of December 3rd, I will ask the chimney repair company I recommended to be there to address the interior repairs to the chimney. We did not promise to do any interior chimney or fire box repairs, that is out of our realm of services. We did move the chimney back into place, it was out at the top of this two story house by several inches. It is tight all the way to the top and only moved when the contractor looking at the interior problem of the chimney was forcing it to move. As far as the problem with the kitchen floor, we did install a new floor joist under the wall that was built between existing floor joists resting only on 3/4" plywood. We supported the wall as we said we would, we could not bring the floor sheeting back even due to long term buckling from the original problem. We stand behind our work, we did what we said we would do. However I will make one more trip to look over whatever it is you think we did not do. James P. My husband and I just bought a home, and we noticed the concrete on the foundation in the back of our home by the porch was starting to crumble off. It looked like the previous homeowners had patched up the foundation in some way, and we were worried about possible moisture getting into the concrete. So we called Bedrock, and talked to Jason, who was wonderful. He came out immediately, took a look at the outside of our foundation, and immediately called, asking me questions, and giving me advice on how to keep water away from the outside of our home. He was even great with our dogs, who stay outside. He ended up making 2 visits to the house, free of charge, and found no issues, and told us not to pay a company to do anything. We didn't pay a penny, and he gave us great advice to make sure we don't have any issues in the future. If we ever need work done, I know I can completely trust Jason and Bedrock to do only what's necessary and not overcharge. i highly recommend this company, their integrity and trustworthiness is some of the best I have seen.

This company was hired to repair the wall where there was a leak coming in under the drywall. The team arrived promptly and went to work. They were very pleasant. The left side involved digging out the flower bed from the wall. They were getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, but, they didn't complain ( I did give them some bug spray). The work was scheduled over two days to allow drying time for the mortar and sealant. It did take three days and we had another torrential downpour that caused that delay. To my dismay the water leaked into the garage through the ill fitting garage door this time. It looks like this is one of those money pit leaks where you fix one area and the leak moves somewhere else! The overall work that was performed was excellent and the job was done exactly as they described. I am very satisfied with the outcome. Now I just need to get the doors fixed!
Description of Work: Removed mortar around attached garage where it met with the slab on both the outside and the inside left and back wall. Applied a sealant inside and out and replaced mortar with another coating of sealant on the outside. Removed approximately 1 foot of drywall and the footing on both walls. Replaced the footing with treated lumber and reinstalled drywall with a quarter inch gap between floor and with plastic inserts at all seams in case there is future leaking all the drywall won't get damaged. Replaced the existing baseboard.

Jason had so much great information for me. I did not require any structural repairs so Jason offered to recommend a company that would be able to help me with my specific needs. I hope I never need to call Jason back, but in the event I am in need of any structural repairs Bedrock Foundation Systems will be my first and only call.

Jason was very thorough on his initial inspection, provided a prompt estimate, and they started work a week later. The work was well done and the areas around the house that were affected were restored to the same condition as before. They are expensive, but similar to the other estimates that we saw. Overall, we were pleased with the whole experience.
