Description of Work: We can't say enough good things about this company. Each technician who has been to our house has been very careful and thoughtful. Have cared for HVAC at our home when it was built by our parents 1959 and now passed on to us kids, Will describe some of their help - all of which would not have been necessary if we'd have had them install the new furnace we bought years ago. Most recently they came to fix a backed up condenser drain pipe. Explained the problem, cut a hole in the pipe so we could fix the problem ourselves if it happens again, and also taught us how to use the hole to keep it from happening again. Showed us where an access plug is already in the pipe as it was installed by the OTHER company. Not only is it impossible to access in the location where the installers put it, but if you had a clog and could get to that place to open the plug, the backed up water would flow out into the furnace. Also another Tom Muse tech rode to the rescue on an earlier visit to investigate what might be making excess CO in the room. Weren't getting levels high enough to trip the alarm on the CO monitor, but ever since a scary breakdown of our first 30yr old furnace, we check it every night before going to bed, and sometimes the monitor showed more than "0" and we didn't want to ignore that. The tech couldn't find any functional problems in the gas furnace or water heater, but noted the joints fashioned between sections of pipe to vent the exhaust out of the furnace and up thru the roof were simply stacked together, leaving gaps which were not taped when the replacement furnace was installed. He taped them up but also went extra mile, going up on the roof to check that there was nothing obstructing the vent pipes. Not being any mechanical causes identified, the guess was that when the outdoor temperature was at a certain point and we were also running the dryer and the HVAC at the same time, it could be that some of the exhaust from the furnace would be drawn into the room thru the untaped gaps in the vent pipes. Must have been the right diagnosis because this was years ago and there have been no more mysterious CO readings. Tom Muse was our first choice to install the new furnace, but what we needed to replace was a peculiar unit and broke down in a long cold snap, and it would be a couple of weeks before they could get one delivered. Our second choice could get a new unit installed a week sooner, and we had great experience with their plumbing work, and went with them instead. This was a company who has cared for the plumbing in our house since it was built. Though we found out the day the crew came to install the furnace, that these were folks who did this work for the plumbers - not the plumbers we knew. But we had great confidence in them for many years and figured anyone they would subcontract would be good folks, too. And we now know, thru the expertise of Tom Muse technicians, that those subs were not great. Also, we continued using the same grade air filters which the installers had used, and the Tom Muse folks advised about using better air filters - seeing how much more dust is caught in the better filters as compared to what was seen in the original type of filter, it is plain to see it was more good advice. Also, saw, as we already knew, that one of the access slots for the two air filters was difficult to negotiate - more sloppy ductwork. The right side works okay, but the left-side filter access opening was cut too short, and the size filter we need always needs to be cut and shortened almost an inch in order to fit into the left-side slot. The tech advised a smaller size filter would still be large enough to cover the opening from the duct into the furnace but be easier for us to fit into the shorter left-side opening than a cut-down version of the size which fits the right-side opening. Also thoughtfully wrote down the two sizes next to the openings on each side for the two filters, and also thoughtfully added air flow arrows so that even dumb bunnies like us would install them correctly. Would expect that retrofitting a new furnace into existing ductwork could make for some clumsy connections, but what I've learned from Tom Muse is that what we have is just sloppy. In hindsight, there is no question that even though we would have had to wait a week longer for Tom Muse to secure and install the style furnace that we needed, and even though the temps in those weeks were in the teens and 20's, it would have been worth the wait. We love Tom Muse Company, they are great!! | | | |
