I generally work within a hour drive or less of Strasburg Virginia. Some estimates I charge for or require a deposit. This is if I must draw plans or many hours of work are required. Most estimates I do not charge for. When I need to draw plans I need to charge for that time and will apply this cost toward the project if I am hired. The experience thus far in Virginia has been a really good one. I have a cad design program and a 3D home design program. My service area for projects would be NOVA as far out to Manassas and up to Leesburg and the Northern Shenandoah Valley. I go as far south as New Market, Broadway, and Timberville, on 81 roughly. I am looking to expand into West Virginia up the I-81 corridor and to Harpers Ferry and over to Hardy County, I need to take the exams for the West Virginia Builders License. I am a Class A Licensed Virginia Builder. The picture on the Angie's List website is of a remodeling project I completed. For now please go to my website to see pictures of projects. I am swamped at this time, please call I am still interested in your project and I will let you know when I am available. Things are extremely busy right now. Hi [Member Name Removed]! Thank you for the review! I did like working with you [Member Name Removed]. I will disagree with you on two things. The work running the base trim is well within industry standards. Actually many of the new trimmers do not know how to cope inside corners as it should be done. On the price? Well my price is going to stay where it is at. Maybe even go up, I am well within industry standards for licensed professionals. One thing I did learn on this one is to not walk into anymore deal blasts without looking at the job first. That way I can see what I am getting myself into before I come out to do the work. I just wanted to get the trim installed for you and with the carpet layers laying carpet at the same time really slowed me down. Had more to look out for such as not staining the carpet and moving things around to accommodate that. I did the best I could and completed running the trim for you that day as you requested. I stayed late to finish it. That was a lot of cutting and walls. With the deal blast I work on the customers in the order I receive them. Hope we can work together again but I want to look at the job before I show up to work. That was a very hot humid day! This one was a little rushed. Hope you do well selling your home! It was good meeting you and Mrs. [Member Name Removed]! Have a great day!

There were quite a few glitches getting the work scheduled. Mike was very apologetic about this. My schedule was not critical, so I could deal with it. But some people might not be happy about that. That is the reason for the B on punctuality. Overall, the quality of work was good to excellent. Mike is especially good at carpentry and wood repair, but he did well on all of the jobs. Mike is very easy to get along with and very professional. He provided suggestions and advice on the most economic solutions to the various issues. He advised me when it would be better to use a different contractor e.g. an Angie's List painter for a day deal was more economical than having Mike do the painting. And he advised me when he was not the right man for the job, such as repairing the under counter sink. He pointed out some additional work that I might need to consider in the future. He was very concerned about the safety of the hammock for my son. He seems very genuine.
Description of Work: Mike provided handyman services. He did the following jobs: Replaced a faulty deadbolt lock Repaired an exterior door jam Repaired rotten moulding around 2 exterior doors with vinyl moulding. This included caulking and painting as necessary Repaired the caulking around a toilet in a room with hardwood floors. Fixed one towel hook securely in the wall Fixed one toilet paper holder securely in the wall Obtained and installed the hardware to support mounting a hammock internally. Installed new seals on two windows and one door that had been letting in cold air. Mike also provided suggestions on contractors who could repair a detaching under counter mounted sink

Thank You [member name removed], I am very busy. It is not time to staff up yet so scheduling is rough right now, plus the winter weather. I know I have a lot of irons in the fire. I understand the B and thank you for your patience. Between winter weather and other projects I was stretched very thin(lots of people calling and trying to get their projects completed. Small projects can be rough on scheduling especially when weather keeps messing things up). Hopefully if the economy continues to recover I may be able to hire employees to handle more projects. I was also busy trying to get things lined up for building an addition onto a house. Thank you very much Ian and I enjoyed working with you and knowing you as a person. I do understand the B. I am just swamped with work. Doing the best I can. This is why I am now letting people know I am a few months out of scheduling work at this time. Also AM and PM time frames. Thank you again for your patience [member name removed] the hammock anchoring system was a lot of research to find. Had to scratch me head on that one. Never installed a hammock indoors before. Thank You [member name removed], hope all goes well for you!

This experience was not good. Mike was originally supposed to do the work starting at 11 AM on January 30th. I took a vacation day to accommodate this schedule and moved furniture in preparation of the work. At 10:30 AM on the day he was supposed to be here he called to tell me he couldn't make it because he had car trouble. I understand that these things happen so I agreed to reschedule. We communicated via e-mail early the following week and agreed that he would be here at 10 AM on Saturday, February 7th. At 9:30 AM he called me to let me know he was on his way. When I asked him what time he would get here he seemed "put out" by that question but replied "a little after 10". My reply was "okay, but since we agreed upon 10 AM I would appreciate you getting here as close to 10 as possible". This was evidently not the thing to say because Mike got very upset and starting to raise his voice at me. He then told me that he still needed to stop and get the lead test kit. Knowing that he was 45 minutes away and then still had to stop to pick up supplies, it became evident to me that he was going to be more than a little late. 5 or 10 minutes, while not professional, is acceptable. 30 minutes is not acceptable. In an effort to understand why he needed the lead test kit (we had talked about this in a previous conversation), I questioned him on it. Again, the solid wood beams were bare when I painted them with latex paint 5 years ago so I know for a fact there's no lead in those beams OR the room in general. At that point Mike yelled at me and told me that he is sick and tired of people "like me" telling him how to do his job. He then told me that I could contact Angie's List for a refund and then he hung up on me. He called back about a minute later and continued to yell about "people like me" and how sick and tired he is of being told how to do his job. He went on a rant about how it's the law to test for lead paint and that he can be fined if he doesn't comply. That's all well and good, I didn't care that he was insisting on testing the beams but I did take exception to the fact that he was going to be even later because he needed to stop and get the test kit. If it was so important for him to test the beams, it's my opinion that he should have had the test on hand and been here and ready to do his job at 10 AM. In an e-mail he later wrote to me he said he didn't show up today because I asked him to break federal and state laws. That is not true. He then told me that I was abusive and militaristic and that construction schedules should be flexible and that I don't know anything about construction and that I needed to adjust my attitude. He accused me of yelling at him which again is not true. I in fact had to request that he stop yelling at me. Perhaps Mike was just having a bad day but when I hire a "professional" I expect them to be professional. I expect people to be punctual and polite, not late and inappropriate. I fully expect Mike to dispute everything I have just said because based on the contents of the e-mail he sent me, he feels he did nothing wrong. Long story short, I paid for a service that I scheduled twice and Mike didn't show up. My opinion of him as a professional is exceptionally low. I would not recommend this person to anyone. What should have been an easy 2 hour job turned into way too many phone calls, e-mails and stories about broken down trucks and how he wishes he could afford a new one. Rather than just apologize for being late, Mike made up reasons as to why I was a bad client. He showed no personal accountability at all.
Description of Work: Mike was supposed to remove 3 solid pine, decorative beams from the ceiling in my living room. These beams were originally bare but had been painted by me with latex paint 5 years ago.

1.) I had my truck tuned up on Thursday, before I was supposed to go see [member name removed] on Friday. As I started out on Friday to see her, I was on the interstate my engine started missing horribly. I called [member name removed] and told her my truck was not running right. I told her I could come there after they fix the truck. She was very abrasive and belligerent and said I have no time for you to come here later today my time is important. I took a vacation day and so on and she rambled. I have other things to do today you can not come here later today. So she had her vacation day packed. She was abrasive and not understanding at all. Rambling on about her time. I was going to go see her later on the same day but she was busy with other things she had planned on her vacation day. I went to the Ford Dealership two times because of cracked spark plugs before the problem was corrected. [Member name removed] was too busy to see me the next day on Saturday. So I set a appointment for the next Saturday. 2.) I was going to see her on Saturday morning. I called her at about 9:25 AM to tell her I was on my way. I told her I would be there about 10:05 or 10:10 roughly. She became abrasive. I was already driving on the road when I called her. Then I told her I would have to test the beam for lead based paint. She then became extremely abrasive protesting and told me I did not have to test the beam and went on and on saying I did not need to test it. I legally have to test that beam whether she wants me to or not. I asked her, so you are telling me how to do my job now. At this point I was done and hung up the phone. I turned my truck around and headed home. I called her back after I calmed down and she was worse than ever. I told her to go ahead and write a bad review if she felt she needed to do so. 3.) I never told her I had to go to Lowes. I keep lead test kits in my office and the test kit was on the front seat of my truck and so was my digital camera for documentation. I also had a copy of the Joint EPA – HUD Curriculum Lead safety book manual issued by the government for the certified class I took just in case she had any questions. She did not want me to test the beam which is a violation of the State and Federal laws. The law requires I test painted surfaces in a house built before 1978. She may not realize this but she, can be fined as a homeowner $35,000.00 for violating this law. It is a $70,000.00 fine for me. Angieslist had a article on lead based paint safety, I suggest everyone read. What if it took more than two hours to remove the beam? What if I found lead. She would have flipped at that price! That would have been over a thousand of dollars from me. If I found lead based paint I would have referred her to a lead removal contractor. Many service businesses will only give you AM or PM service calls; I am also very busy with other clients and have a lot going on. I will only give general times for showing up from this day forward. Especially from this day forward. I do call if I am delayed and when I am in route to the job. I always call in advance. I am a very busy, one person can only do so much. At this point on small projects, I will not be working on pre 1978 homes. On larger projects we will have to discuss any projects in detail. Good Luck in your search to find a contractor that you are happy with. Sometimes two people can not work together.

Mike's work was exceptional. He took the time to answer all of my questions (and there were a lot) and did everything I asked of him with not a single word of complaining. He took a tremendous amount of pride in his work which is what I appreciate most. I found both him and his work to be beyond exceptional. He will be my first phone call if ever I need help again!!!!

Very wishy washy on the phone and was talking about all the future services he could do before he even started work. His estimates on cost and time were high for the work stated then when he got in took less time. He was convinced that garbage disposals were illegal in wake county. (there was a law passed 6 years ago then it was overturned within a few weeks). At the end he wanted to tack on additional cost for his gas cost for driving.

Sorry [member name removed] feels this way but here are my points. Three things: repair a door, check a leaking toilet, check a leaking garbage disposal. [member name removed] mentioned some future remodeling of the bathroom. 1.) I was not wishy washy which he is wrong about. I could not tell him about the door repair without seeing what was wrong with it. I did not know if the track was damaged or what the problem was. I can not see the door through the phone. Next he should have appreciated my ethics in finding the problem and making a quick repair. I had to adjust the door so it would not fall out of the existing tract. It was a poor install from the start. The doors still touched but he did not want to spend the time or money to sand the door. 40 minutes on the door. Construction and remodeling are not manufactured goods for sale. I can't give prices without researching a project. I also will not drive out and spend three to four hours of my time to look at two hours worth of work. Prices in remodeling do not just pop out there; there is a lot of work and research that goes into bidding projects. 2.) He was wanting money back and what I explained to him is he purchased a 2 hour deal. What was said is I had to drive 40 minutes to get there and burn up gas in my truck. Not I wanted gas money; however, if he wanted a refund he would need to pay for my gas and some time. The two hour deal is a minimum charge. So out of the $129.00 deal angies list takes a piece of it which does not leave me with much. To hire a licensed gc like myself with my experience costs way more than what he paid, at least from me. 3.) On the future projects. He brought up the topic of remodeling the bathroom so that became part of the conversation. As normal I would be interested in any future work. I did not ask him for future work we discussed it and I will not be low bidder or work for low wages period. There is a price to be paid for someone of my skill level. 4.) On the garbage disposal. I called the Raleigh building department. You can replace an existing garbage disposal. To put a garbage disposal in a new home or addition that requires a grease trap, a lot of things, and must meet commercial code. That is one way to make it cost preventative. Now this is where my plumbers are coming from. 5.) A permit is needed to replace a garbage disposal in the City of Raleigh and the work must be done by a licensed Plumber. I am a licensed building contractor not a licensed plumber. A licensed plumber must replace a garbage disposal. I can tighten up things and such minor issues. The leak was out of the bottom of the unit so as I told [member name removed] he would need a licensed plumber. 6.) On the leak on the toilet I guessed it needed a flapper valve. It was a possible issue. I was going to go to lowes to get one but by the time I was done it would probably run over two hours [member name removed] did not want to pay for that. 7.) I was there over two hours. [member name removed] told his rental tenant that they could use up my time doing some things for her. I hung pictures and a clock. I was there over two hours. 8.) I contacted [member name removed] later and told him I would apply that other hour towards future work. Even though I used up the time hanging pictures as he said it was ok. I will not do another hours work for him after the review. He would not not hire me anyway. 9.) I only wanted additional money for gas if he wanted a refund. There is also traveling time. Really to me the two hours is a minimum charge to go there. I told him if I was only going to be paid for one hour or less I would need to charge a little money for fuel. Try driving a large truck with a V-8 engine that far and see how much fuel it uses. He also never considered traveling time for small jobs. The two hours is a minimum charge. I have been a licensed contractor going on almost 18 years and been in this business over thirty years. There are many happy people I have done work for and I have a lot of knowledge. I will not be your low bid contractor; however, my quality is very good and I do everything legally. I am sorry he feels this way but, personally I do not want to work for or have clients like him. This providing service is a two way street and there are people a business does not want for a client. One thing where he was right was the garbage disposal but it was honest mistake from talking with building officials and plumbers. This did not matter because I was not licensed to preform the repair and I told him he needed a licensed plumber for the garbage disposal repair. I knew that. Here is a link from Mike Holmes that is on my website. It is on the first page of my website. I do not want everyones work just the way it is. Some people a contractor is better off staying away from. I am good at what I do. [hyperlink removed] Hope [member name removed] finds someone he is happy with. Sometimes things do not work out. I wish him well in his remodeling projects coming up.

Description of Work: Ceiling Fan/Light Fixture in Family Room Was Not Working. Mike found the unit needed to be replaced. We went to Lowes and I picked one out. He replaced the unit and recommended I use energy saving light bulbs which I purchased also. He made sure the wiring in the wall worked properly, and tested bulbs to make sure that they were not the cause of the unit not working. He checked out my fireplace switches to make sure the fireplace was operating correctly. I thought I had a leak in the downstairs bathroom around the toilet because the floor tile was bumpy around the commode. Mike checked under the house to see if there was a leak that caused the tile to loosen from the floor. He did not find a leak and recommended someone to properly fix the floor tile. I was worried that the toilet in that bathroom would have to be replaced, but Mike assured me that it did not. I will definitely use Mike in the future for any and all home repairs. He also changed the ceiling light bulb in my garage.

Overall Mike did an excellent job. He preformed quality work to a number of repairs needed for our house that we had just moved. His experience in construction gave him the skills necessary to preform a number of different tasks. I would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Mike preformed a number of projects that included; cutting the bottoms off of 9 doors to allow access for a new rug, fix torn screens on the screen porch, replace a weather stripping on the bottom of the connecting garage door, fix 2 door hinges, replace a ceiling fan, and fix two door latches that were not working properly.

Went exactly as committed to. Very high quality work, no short cuts. Kept good control of project and any sub-contractors used. Always showed considerable concern on doing the job right. Came up with own excellent ideas on how best to use the space available and closet, arched entry, and stairs came out beyond expectations. If you want someone to trust and know that the job is going to be done right, I'll go to this contractor all the time.

I worked for the largest municipal housing agency in the country in New York City for 13 years. Within this agency, I had the privilege of working with some of the most sophisticated for-profit and not-for-profit developers that built and renovated homes and apartment buildings in New York City. Mike Fusco's work ethic and knowledge of construction surpassed them all. Mike genuinely cares about the quality of the finished product as well as his customers. He was accessible by email and cell phone everyday including weekends. My calls were not ignored. If I left a voice-mail, my calls were promptly returned. My experience with Mike was so pleasant that he became a close friend of my family. Although it has been 5 years since the house has been built I continue to request his services. He knows the house and the lay of my land better than I do. I could not have asked for a more knowledgeable builder that is a man of integrity, has a strong worth ethic, is honest, reasonable and provides excellent customer service. Anyone that retains the services of Mike Fusco will realize that he is a rare find and that person will not be disappointed with the end product.
Description of Work: Mike Fusco performed above and beyond what was expected of him as a builder. He accompanied me to Lowes to choose finishes for the cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms. He also accompanied me to the store to provide guidance for the selection of tiles to be purchased for the house. In addition, Mike also spent hours with me on the phone reviewing and discussing the floor plans of my home and also explained how the impact of any changes made to the plan would affect the price, materials or size of the rooms in my home. I was so blessed to have a builder of his expertise and extensive knowledge that was personable, patient and available to address all my concerns and issues with the construction of my home.
