I requested a quote for gutter replacement from Shiner Roofing because the previous owner of my home had used the company to install a new roof prior to my purchase of the property. Although the sales rep who came out was most professional, and even went up on the roof to assess the gutter situation up close, the quote provided was nearly double that of the next most expensive contractor for open gutters of the same quality and size. Shiner also had several weeks of lead time before the work could be scheduled. Between what seemed to be a high quote and delays in starting new work, I decided to accept another contractor's bid.

Some scheduling problems but the communication with the office was good so we were able to work around it.

With regard to the runoff repair, I had to call them back to repair their workmanship. They added rinspout to divert water from an upper roof from pouring onto a lower roof. This rainspout connection had a leak in it, so instead of following the intended route, it leaked onto the lower roof. They did come back and fix it after I sent them a photograph of their poor workmanship failing its purpose. With regard to the de-icing of a rainspout, their workers showed heroic resolve to fix my problem. However, the company didn't see fit to make sure they had the proper tools and their workers suffered terribly in the bitter cold. and for today's problem, I have a small rain leak from a vent pipe installation. I have a very high roof and I advised them to use long ladders. Their response was, "we have only one truck with 40' ladders and it will cost you 150.00 dollars to bring the truck out. I asked,"Can that be included with the work?". I was told that they needed me to send them the money today (Saturday) for them to come out on Monday. I said that I was a returning customer and the representative said that it didn't matter. I asked if I could pay their worker on Monday and she said no. There was no attempt on Shiner's side to work with me and keep a customer. AT THAT POINT I TERMINATED FURTHER DIALOG AND CANCELLED THE VISIT

Went well but workers had to remove some of the new shingles to add the ice guard that the estimator agreed to install. If you use them, I would watch the work as it is being done to insure that they are actually doing what you understood the contract included. Other than that, the quality of the work was good and worth the money.

Although I did not select Shiner due to price, they provided me with valuable information based on their thorough review of my gutters/roof that explained a problem I had been having for years. The estimator was extremely thorough and professional during his visit. He was the only one from the companies I called that actually looked at all my existing gutters and even went up on the roof (a three story climb) to see what they looked like. By doing this, he explained that the "overflow" I thought I was having in the front of my house was actually the result of my shingles extending further than they should, which was likely the cause of the overflow. He explained that choosing a 6 inch gutter would likely solve the problem. One other company I called insisted I did not need 6 inch gutters and didn't even look at them in any detail until I asked him to. At the end of the day, I went with another company because Shiner's price was incredibly high based on the other estimates and given it was just simple gutter work, I was comfortable selecting someone else. Shiner was the most thorough of the companies that came out but it seems like they have a lot of overhead they have to cover, or the job was too small, so perhaps that is why the price was so out of whack.

Shiner Roofing is an impressive and extremely well-managed company with very talented professionals in all its technical and customer service positions. We hired Shiner 18 years ago to replace our previous roof. We hired Shiner again on two subsequent occasions within the past 4 years to install 2 new skylights, replace soffits and fascia and rake boards as well as ventilation and insulation work. We were VERY satisfied across the board. In all the tasks performed, the materials used were of the highest quality and the technical specialists knew their areas of specialization extremely well. When it came time to replace our roof, we first looked to Shiner. Since we had joined Angie's List, we decided to check out the company, and we were not surprised to see that they had excellent ratings. So we decided to go with Shiner and ask only Shiner for an estimate. Based on our discussions with Ryan, their estimator, we decided to go with a much higher quality shingle than we had before. Ryan was very impressive and knowledgeable about the entire process and was thorough and clear in his explanation of every technical aspect. The company called us to tell us all the materials would be delivered and placed on our roof the day before their technicians arrived. This was done with precision as was everything else. On the first day of work, a team of 5 men, the supervisor and 4 members, arrived early in the morning to start removing shingles in the rear part of the roof. The same team ended up spending 12 hours on 3 consecutive days to do all the required work. That is because after they started, they discovered that much of the underlying wood/corkboard was severely damaged and some of the rafters in the attic and rake board also needed repair. Mr. Kevin Shiner, owner of the company, arrived at my house within an hour after the supervisor told me about the problems. He got up on the roof, took pictures of the problems and showed them to me on his computer, explained to me the additional cost if we wanted to adequately address all the problems, and pointed out that they might find similar problems on the front part of the roof as we were just focusing on the rear at this time. Mr. Shiner returned the next day and similarly got up on the roof, took pictures and showed them to me, explained that we had serious problems on the front roof, and we signed a second contract amendment. We believe that most of all these problems were probably due to the fact that the attic and roof previously were not well-ventilated. You can be sure that this time we had the new roof and attic well-ventilated. Mr. Shiner returned to the house after the job was finished to personally conduct the inspection. He was very pleased with the work done by his staff but noticed perhaps 7-8 shingles where the ladders made marks on the new shingles, and he told me he wanted them replaced by the team supervisor himself on a subsequent day because he wanted it to be a perfect job. And it was a perfect job, and we have had enough rain in the past month or more to test the roof and it performed as designed without any leaks or problems. Mr. Shiner has very high standards, and he leads by example so that all his staff perform their jobs at a very high level. The technical team of 5 men who worked on our project only do roofs and have been together for 15 or more years. That shows you something important about the company. They have roofing technicians who only do roofs and siding people who only do siding, etc. So you can be sure that their staff are very experienced in their trade. Mr. Shiner is very intelligent, honest, fair and full of integrity. Because of the unanticipated additional work, which is always to be expected in this line of work, he gave me discounts in a number of areas. At the end of the job, they gave me the unopened packages of new shingles in case we needed to replace any in the future and also a large package of hard copy pictures of all the problems with the roof that they repaired. This was an expensive purchase. Had we solicited bids from other companies, we probably would have gotten lower bids and it would have been difficult comparing apples and oranges since every company approaches roof replacement differently. However, we trusted Shiner roofing, we knew they would be honest and forthcoming and fair, and we know that the roof that they installed is of the highest quality, that all the problems were more than adequately addressed, AND we have a 5-Star Surestart Plus System Warranty for up to 50 years, a great selling point when we eventually sell the house. Perhaps most importantly, we have enormous peace of mind and a beautiful roof to admire. Thank You Shiner Roofing!

Jim, the sales manager, was very knowledgable and answered all my questions. He really took his time in answering all of my questions.

Full disclosure of intended work, kept to promised schedule and complete clean up and returned to check on work. Workmen were professional and courteous.

Provided estimate with a discount for early commitment to services. Office rep provided on going messages advising of scheduling etc. Warranty information provided at end of job.

I liked the thoroughness of the evaluation & estimate - the Shiner rep took photos of the roof and downloaded them immediately on his laptop so we could see what he was talking about. I also appreciated that instead of telling us we needed a new roof, he said that with repairs we'd have at least a couple more years. (I knew from the age of the roof we didn't have long.) Another guy we had missed the bathroom leak and tried to tell us the ridgeline vent was all wrong; the Shiner rep had us look up in the attic and said, "See that daylight? That's where your leak is." He also recommended uncovering the attic vents which had been covered by insulation by the previous owners. The work itself was scheduled according to my convenience, and was done quickly and efficiently. Both their sales rep and their roof repair guy were friendly and professional. (I wish I could remember their names.) I plan to contact Shiner when it's time to get the roof shingles replaced.

Shiner called the day before the service was to be performed as promised .The men arrived on time ,went right to work were professional, neat and finished within a reasonable time frame.They did a great job of cleaning my deck and front yard of all the old roofing material before leaving.

They were quick, punctual and professional but I did not think the case of the leak was correct. I ended up going with another company who determined the leak was not the roof but an uncaulked fan vent in the gable.

The services were prompt and efficient. The materials needed were delivered two days prior to the work, as scheduled. The gutter guards were removed prior to the roof work and replaced after the roof was completed. The old roof was removed and the new roof installed in one day with no damage to any other part of the house, the plants were not damaged and all debris & nails were removed from the landscape.

Materials were delivered on the date promised about 5 days ahead of scheduled replacement date. On scheduled date, the roofing crew showed up exactly as promised. They completed the work in approx. 5-6 days and cleaned up completely afterwards. If damaged sections of plywood were encountered, pictures were taken and a change order to the work was completed and agreed to prior to this additions work/cost being done. I am very pleased with their work and professionalism.

They did a good job, and were very professional. There are a couple of warranty items pending, but based on my past experience I'm sure they'll handle them professionally. The only issues we had were that they dropped off materials before hurricane Sandy, but couldn't do the install prior to the storm. I asked them to secure the materials in the shed or take them back, but they only moved the lighter weight materials onto the lawn and I had to move them to the shed myself. They left the heavier items on the roof which turned out to be fine but I worried about them flying off throughout the storm.

Ed from Shiner came out to provide us with an estimate for replacing all of the windows and sliding doors in our townhouse (18 windows + 2 sliding doors). He was on time and very friendly. He provided us with a verbal estimate in total on the windows which was in the ball park of the other companies we had spoken to, but told us he would have to research the cost on the sliding doors. I asked him if he could e-mail us with the breakdown by window as it was possible we might decide to not do all of them at once which he said he would do. But we never received any follow up on that or any costing on the doors. A few days after the visit I received an e-mail from Kandyce at the Shiner office following up on the visit and checking to see if there was any information we needed to make our decision. I let her know that we were still waiting on the breakout of cost for each window as well as estimates for the sliding doors. I also let her know that I was waiting on a tweak to an estimate they provided on replacing our roof, as we had them out the week prior to give an estimate on that (details of that are in a separate review since we dealt with two different people at two different times). I also let her know that the verbal estimate for the windows was in the ballpark but the estimate on the roof was a little high. That's the last communication we had from them. I was surprised since in total for both roofing and windows our job was going to be in the $20k range which I thought was a decent amount worth trying to win. I was also surprised since their salesman on the roofing was terrific (probably the best one we met with) and up to that point had been very responsive but I guess he got the directive from the office not to pursue things further. Too bad since they were a leading candidate, but I guess it all works out in the end since we ended up choosing companies we felt just as good about but at a lower price.

The initial sales visit was great. I was very impressed with the company's reputation The initial sales consultation took longer than expected so after hearing him out I had to rush out the door to work. That was Friday morning. Early Sunday afternoon I contacted the sales agent to accept the lower proposal for vinyl siding (vs. Hardie Plank siding). This is where, in my opinion, things got weird. The sales agent stated he would need to write a NEW contract to eliminate the 5% discount which expired after 24 hours. When they say you've got 24 hours to decide they really mean it! This was literally about 38 hours after the initial consultation and suddenly the 5% discount does not apply anymore. I'm sure 5% is not much to this company, but when it's 5% of 14k of my money then it matters. When I asked to cancel my acceptance then I was provided the option of pre-dating the original contract and it would be accepted. The whole exchange started to feel really shady so I backed off to solicit other bids. Kandyce at the company office did more to try to save my business. She talked to management and got the 5% discount approved again, but it was just to late. I had already talked to other companies and realized Shiner's estimate was pretty high for the product offered. I don't mind paying a premium for quality service, but this estimate was really out of the ballpark so I'm glad I shopped around. There are other high quality companies out there that will not play games with their estimate.

Michael from Shiner came out to provide us with an estimate for replacing our roof and gutters. He was very thorough, professional and friendly. Definitely one of the most thorough estimates we received, and he spent alot of time explaining things which was really helpful. Shiner was the first company that came out and they set the bar really high, although the price was higher too (about 20% higher). Initially Michael was great with the follow up as well. But about a week or so later we got an e-mail from the office manager Kandyce asking what they would need to do to get the deal done, I explained that I was waiting on a few tweaks to the estimate from Michael and that their price was a bit high. Never heard from them after that. I will note that we also had them out to provide estimates on the windows but I've written a separate review on that. Anyway, we really liked working with Michael and I was disappointed things fell apart as I might have considered them even at a higher price. I guess since our job was relatively small (townhouse roof about $6-7k) and they knew they were the higher bidder, they figured they wouldn't win the sale so decided to drop it. Too bad, although I guess things work out for the best as we've chosen another company we also felt very good about but at a much lower cost. I would still recommend Shiner as I think they would provide a high quality product albeit at a higher price, I would absolutely recommend Michael as he was a terrific salesman.

I know a lot of people who use them in the neighborhood and I never heard a bad report from anybody. The price was worth it. I appreciated their work.

Shiner's workers were quick and efficient ? not at it much more than an hour. I thought the price was high, but considering I will probably never have to have the rake boards painted or replaced again, I guess it's worth it.

Excellent service from start to finish. Company responded to our request for services within two days, when their inspector visited. He looked over the fairly large damaged area, where siding was no longer anchored and was 'flapping in the breeze'. He explained that we'd need to replace two walls, not just one, then told us when within a window of time we could expect the work to be done. Within that window, they called to notify us a couple of days in advance. They were there on the day they said they would be, and wrapped up the work within a few hours, cleaning up after themselves. The work appears to be well done - problem solved.

The work was done in a timely manner, the cleanup was complete and the and the area inspector came out to fully inspect the job after it was finished. We are recommending them to our daughter for her roofing needs in the future.

We had our roof replaced several years ago by this company and were very pleased with the service, product and professionalism of the sales person and the installers. For this reason, we contacted them when we needed our windows replaced. They exceeded our expectations with the window replacement job. They worked with us to arrange financing and provided a great product. Joe and Ernesto arrived exactly when they said they would, treated our property with respect, and kept us informed every step of the way. When the job was complete, they vacuumed and cleaned up any debris and I swear the house was actually cleaner after they left than when they arrived. I would highly recommend this company for all your home improvement needs!

The sales person became unresponsive as soon as we signed the contract. We called the sales manager, who was very nice and responsive, who had to take over at that point. There were some issues with scheduling - the first scheduled day had to be rescheduled due to possible weather, they didin't show up and didn't call to cancel on the second scheduled day, the third scheduled day had to be rescheduled due to a scheduling error. The work is OK but not perfect - there's a minor but very noticable wave in the roof (not perfectly straight) and they installed the new gutters above the holes left from the old gutters (the holes in the wood are showing and we had to call a carpenter/painter to fix that). They didn't consider giving us an option to paint first. There was supposed to be an inspection of all trims, but they just put rotten wood back and never called us about it. There was supposed to be a quality inspector visit, but we have never heard from one.

Excellent customer service. Came out to do a quote and explained what we needed and why. Explained how the process would work. Follow up and follow through were beyond expectations.
