I was hoping that our roof was under warranty but it wasn't. Nine years ago we switched from a cedar shake roof to a shingle roof. Nine years ago, I will fault the guy that sold us a new roof because he did not explain what was going on when you switch from a cedar shake to asphalt shingle and he listed the attic fan as an option. We had upgraded the shingles and upgraded the felt padding. We felt everything was going to be dry so we didn't add the attic fan and nobody explained that. So, now I'm looking back at it and for lack of a $700 or $800 attic fan, I got mold in the attic and had to completely replace the roof down to the sheathing which we previously didn't do. I fault them for not explaining what goes on when you go from a cedar shake roof to a shingle one. I fault them for listing the attic fan as an option instead of a you must install this. Now, the group that redid the roof, I'll give them an A. They sent three teams out instead of one team in an effort to get it done quickly. The other stressful thing was as they were nailing the shingles on they saw a curvature in the shingles and they stopped working. The foreman explained to me that when they do this in the summer very often they see this same curvature but the heat makes the shingles flatten out. He said, unfortunately in the winter, it's cold and it's not going to go flat. And so he said at this point, I can't tell if they were just stored improperly or if over time they will flatten. He said, I'm not taking a chance so we're stopping work, we're going to tear off what we did and I'm ordering a whole new shipment of brand new shingles from the manufacturer. So, that was done. And since it came right from the manufacturer to my house there was not storage where the single could be messed up. So, I will say it was definitely stressful but such a thing can't be helped. The tarp came loose and I got a leak in the house while they stopped work but they ordered all new shingles and everything was put back on, as were all the repairs that were associated with the leak. The recent work that they did, while I would probably describe it as the most stressful project I ever lived through, it was all well done. They took care of everything.

Thank you for posting a review about your project. It was indeed stressful for all involved, but we are glad to hear that the new roof is holding up beautifully, a year after the installation was complete. We have worked with our vendor, and the manufacturer, to make sure that the curled shingle problem does not happen to another homeowner. Thank you for your patience through the process. We hope you enjoy your new roof for years to come!

They did an excellent job installing the window. They were on time, very fast and cleaned up very well. But that evening we noticed that the window itself actually had a part that did not line up. It was difficult to see in the day with the sun in our eyes. When we told Shiner and sent photos of the window, we had no problems with them and they responded promptly. They ordered a new window immediately. The problem had been with the manufacturer. The second window came in and Shiner inspected it noting that it was badly manufactured again. They did not try to get us to use it, which other companies might have. They just went ahead and ordered another and informed us of the issue. Unfortunately, the whole process took much longer than expected, but it was handled very professionally. When they finally received a proper window and installed it, again it was done beautifully. We would definitely recommend their work.

Had a leak in roofing around pipe collars and decided to change entire roof. Company was very responsive and professional. The work was done with minimum disruption. The company sent out two team members before the roofing replacement began to tarp the area where the leak was. We are very pleased with all of the services performed by Shiner Roofing and will continue to refer them to friends and family.
It went extremely well and the service was performed extremely quickly and professionally. The staged worked teams came out promptly. As soon as the removal guys were finished, then the carpenters and gutter guys were there. Even though I was home, I could keep up with the teams arriving and departing. This is an excellent company with an excellent set of workers. I will hire them for all my roofing, siding and gutter needs.

Initially I got estimates from Shiner and another company for the job. Shiner's estimate was slightly higher, but decided to go with them based on 2 previous roofing jobs. The salesman was a pleasure to work with. Waited about 6 weeks for the job to start, which was expected. When the work started the crew was there every day. They were very hard-working, sometimes working 10 hours a day. They were very knowledgeable and would answer all my questions and concerns and helped resolve design issues. The entire job took about 3 weeks. This was a big job with a lot of materials and it was noisy, as expected. Note that if materials are left on the grass, it will die. The crew cleaned up every night the best they could before going home. The result is a very beautiful exterior, well worth the price paid and any inconvenience experienced or noise. The quality of the work is excellent and very professional. Every day I admire the James Hardie siding and the quality workmanship. It will not require any painting, and I will be enjoying it for many years to come. So glad this one is checked off the list. Thanks to Shiner Roofing for the outstanding job.

I interviewed many roofing contractors before choosing Shiner. No other company measured up so I recommend Shiner Roofing unequivocally. I was pleased with all facets of the roofing installation from the initial meeting in early September, 2014 through the installation of roofing shingles and gutters to the post installation check. Ask for Nathan to do your initial estimate. Work began and was completed ahead of schedule and I received a credit too as the work was completed with less materials than estimated. If you are looking to work with an ethical roofing company to do quality work performed on time, choose Shiner.

The four workers who came did a fantastic job. They were fast, courteous and answered all my questions. They had the job done in less than a full day. Shortly after installation, one of the site managers came out to make sure we were happy with the results.
Description of Work: Shiner replaced all our gutters, downspouts and facia. They initially gave us a four week wait time for installation, but ended up coming out only 1 1/2 weeks after our estimate was given. They even worked through a rainstorm to make sure it got done in one day. They first came for a free estimate and took all the measurements needed to make sure to get an accurate cost. They came out to do lead testing as well prior to installation.

Bottom line - overall grade of "D" for unprofessional practice in not informing customer of confirmation policy at time of setting appointment. I scheduled an appointment to have a Shiner rep come to my house to provide an estimate for window replacement. Shiner called twice the day prior to confirm but when they weren't able to reach me personally they cancelled the appointment via voicemail on the second message. I spoke with a Shiner rep the morning of the appointment to ask why they cancelled and was told it was because they couldn't talk to me to confirm. The rep was pleasant enough, no issues there, she did a fine job. However, the issue here is that their cancellation policy was never articulated upfront. There is a significant difference between stated policy - "you can expect us to call you 24-48 hours ahead" and what the policy is in practice, which is - if we don't speak with you the day prior we will unilaterally cancel. Had they told me this, I would have made a point to call them myself to confirm vice understanding the policy is simply a reminder call the day ahead. There are other ways they could have accomplished their confirmation such as calling 2-3 days out and letting me know they would cancel if they didn't talk to me, or easiest of all, communicate the policy upfront so there is no confusion and subsequent inconvenience to the customer. Most other companies I have dealt with operate this way.

Price: While Shiner's estimate was about 10 to 15% higher than the other 4 Angie's List A+ rated candidates, Shiner's quote was complete that it included items and work not covered in any of the others. That is,. There were no ?extras? or surprises. Shiner was very liberal in their performing of extra work over and above the contract and simply did not charge us for items that were identified as potential extra cost items by the others. However, when an extra cost structural item did surface, Shiner was extremely generous with a charges that could have only been their cost. I'm certain that our overall cost would have greatly exceeded any of the other estimates we received from the other contractors, and in all likelihood, would have greatly exceeded the final bill we received from Shiner. Other Angies' A+ listed Contractors: We solicited and interviewed four other Angie's A+ listed roofing contractors . While all other four contractors were professional, polite and appeared reasonably versed and competent on the topic of roofs, none of the others identified the roof ventilation deficiencies or certain other architectural nuances and intricacies with our roof. Shiner was able to identify and discuss in sufficient technical detail ? performance aspects, vulnerabilities as well as some history of our roof ? while, none of the others could explain. Because we fully expected surprises in the structure, items that could not have possibly be predicted without a full tear down and inspection, Shiner was the only candidate that I had any confidence in that would be able to address and resolve whatever they came across with effective professional execution. We selected Shiner and we were not disappointed. Their performance was as follows: They carried out the work with military precision. The crews are briefed on issues beforehand in the morning at their office and operate effectively like a Swiss watch with all materials and tools on-hand. The personnel are long-time Shiner employees and all are very proud of their work and appear happy in their work. None are ?pick-up? employees. They all speak well of their employer. I met and got to know all the crew members. Each one was a skilled craftsman, with many being foreman-class quality. I couldn't discern a novice among them. Moreover, I was impressed by their ability to execute the work with the most minimum of talk - They knew their job, they knew what the next guy was supposed to do, and they did this many times before. The crews Came Early and Left Late ? that is, in the morning, the crew cars would quietly park alongside the home entrance where they would have their coffee and prepare for the day. Often, they would show up and coalesce at least one half hour before commencement of work. They wouldn't leave for the day until they reached a solid stopping point, waterproof and protect any exposed roof, tools and materials stowed and covered, debris cleaned, and the site restored to 100%. In our case of having many dogs, the crews were very mindful of keeping the gates closed, and additionally, all crew members were dog friendly. Quality: The quality is A1++. Its been about 4 months now since Shiner came and left, and we are so pleased we selected them. Our roof is a show-piece and will outlast us.
Description of Work: I come into this as a professional engineer and as a former building and code official. My focus is on the the mechanics, machinery, execution, performance, reliability, and maintenance while my wife has a super keen and demanding eye for the aesthetics. Being a frugal engineer, I do as much of my own work wherever possible, and I only contract out work that I believe that others can do as good if not better than I, and where its clearly more cost-effective to sub out the work. In all cases, I serve as the general contractor, write my own specifications and contracts following much research. We have large complicated roof with many valleys, angles, and a large number of penetrations. The original roof was a “Deck House” shake shingle design that was shoddily redone by the previous owner. The original deck house roof design was layered as follows (inner to outer): 2-1/2-inch “lock-deck” laminated engineered lumber, a foil barrier layer, a 2-inch medium-dense poly-urethane foam insulation, 15# roofing felt, 1/2-inch plywood sheathing, 15# roofing felt and finally the asphalt shingles. This original design and its ultimate execution was problematic in that it presented many opportunities for failure: water and ice leaks, pest and weather intrusion. Additionally, no provision whatsoever was included in this initial design for roof ventilation. The original design was clearly defective and lack of any ventilation contributed greatly to its short life. When redone by the previous owner, they opted for a partial demolition involving removal of the shingles only, placement of 2x4 lateral battens placed 2-feet OC, and covered with 1.2-inch OSB sheathing, paper and then covered with low grade shingles. While this effectively “raised the roof" and provided a 2-inch ventilation void, execution of this work was poor and provided greater opportunity for weather infiltration because of substantive nails, screws and other fastening means used to attach this false roof to the original roofing system – despite providing a respectable solution to the ventilation problem. This latter roof held for about 8 years, but ultimately failed and was well on the path for causing substantive structural damage.

They came out about probably six years ago. The caveat to that is I thought I had a problem three years ago and they came out. Even though there had been moisture, it was a fluke and there really wasn’t anything and they told me I did not need work. So, that was pretty impressive. They do the best quality work.

While the office staff was awesome. I was horrified by the actual sales "professional" that came to my house. Holy terrible Batman! Not only was Shiner waaaaaay over every other estimate I've had. Talk about giving me the hard sell. Might I also mention, it really looks bad when your sales guy shows up at my house stinking like he's already had a drink at 1 p.m. in the afternoon!!! NO really strong mouthwash really doesn't hide that smell. I wouldn't use this roofer ever.

The employee in question was here in our office in a Sales Meeting from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. meeting with several managers and had several interactions with owners and officers of the company. The employee did not have any odor of alcohol at any time in meetings at our offices. The employee has been with the company for many years and has never had complaints of this nature. The employee in question does tend to wear strong cologne on a normal basis, and this may have been what the homeowner detected. Immediately after his meeting, he drove straight to the Homeowner’s for his 1:00 p.m. appointment. We strongly regret that the homeowner would make such a strong accusation that has no merit whatsoever. As for the Homeowner’s concerns of the estimate given, we show that there are 5 areas in need extensive repairs. The proposal given was a fair estimate given the extent of the repairs. Our mission is to determine and implement the right construction solution for every customer and we are sorry that the subscriber felt the estimate was too high. We wish them luck with their home improvement project. We do apologize that this Homeowner was not satisfied with our Salesman, but we do value the reviews we receive, and hope that by reading them, you will find that the customers we have serviced over the years have had many far more positive experiences than negative.

Scheduling was a minor issue. This is probably the nature of the business, but a 30 day window of when they will do the work really doesn't cut it for most people. Once they ordered the materials they were able to place me on the schedule and the work was done in a few days. During the initial visit I was led to believe that my landscaping would be covered to protect plants and bushes. This was not the case. When I arrived home from work at 3:30 pm (they started at 9:00 am) nothing was covered and the roofers were throwing stuff off of the roof - landing where ever. There was even debris in the tree on the front side of the townhouse. But what really has caused me to rate this vendor so low is the additional cost of $140 for "replacement of 2 sheets of plywood". What I take exception to is the fact that this was not discussed with me in advance, but simply placed on my bill. At a minimum someone should have called me in advance of my receiving the bill to tell me there would be an additional charge and the reason for the charge. And really, they couldn't eat the cost of $140 dollars out of what I expect to be a large profit margin on roofing? Since it's a replacement roof I really can't address the issue of quality beyond how my plants were treated. Only time and lots of heavy rain storms will give me an indication of what their work quality is really like. 09/16/14 - Update: It seems I wrote my review too soon. Before contacting the company about the additional charges I took a look at the front and back of my roof. The workers had removed the external dome attic fan! I sent an email to Meghan Bowers on 09/05 asking about the charges and the missing fan. Within 5 minutes I got what seemed to be a standard reply - there was rotting wood that needed to be replaced and the attic fan isn't needed with a ridge vent. I replied that this wasn't consistent with what Dave Wahrendorff and I discussed. He told me that removal of the fan would cost extra due to labor and the plywood needed to cover the hole. I clearly told him to leave the fan in place. My contract did not specify its removal. Meghan said that Andrew Renaux or Dave Wahrendorff would get back to me the that following Monday the 8th. I never received a call or email from anyone. Today on 09/16 Tiffany from accounting called me about the payment. So much for customer service. After receiving her voice message I sent an e-mail to Meghan, Andrew and Dave telling them that I was about to settle payment and would be updating my Angies's List review. In less than 5 minutes I received an e-mail from both Andrew and Dave. Dave's e-mail basically stated that he had talked to Andrew and thought Andrew was handling it. Andrew's e-mail contained an offer to remove $70 from my bill. I declined his offer and made it clear we were pass the point of any goodwill gestures on their part. Neither one of the email messages included an explanation of why my attic fan was removed, an apology for that, why I wasn't notified in advance of the additional charges, or an apology for not getting back to me on this issue. The action I received on this issue today was clearly prompted by my mention of a review on Angie's List.
