Shiner Exteriors

I don't usually review companies I haven't hired, but I cannot say enough good about Shiner Roofing. We own a fairly small detached home in Arlington and we knew when we moved in 2 years ago that the roof only has a little time left. An animal intrusion convinced us that it was time to act. Shiner Roofing was the first company we had come out. Their representative Scott Peterson was outstanding. Scott did a thorough inspection of our roof and attic (something most roofers we had out did not bother to do), and recommended a new roof, as we expected. He then walked us through every component of a roof, explaining what Shiner does and why they do it that way. Scott patiently answered our (many) questions, and when it was time to do an estimate he produced a traveling office (laptop and usb printer) and very courteously suggested that we should feel free to go about our day and he would tell us when he was ready (we had another company that did an on-site estimate make us wait while they worked out numbers). The on-site estimate was nice because it allowed us to more fully understand the proposal when it was finished and - surprise! - there was no hard sell involved! We had other companies offer us thousands of dollars off their (horribly inflated) prices if we signed on the spot. With Shiner, we were told there would be as $200 discount if we acted within 30 days. A nice little incentive, but not something that made us feel that Shiner was overbidding. When it was all over, we were extremely comfortable with Shiner, and very grateful to Scott for his outstanding personal attention, which included phone and e-mail conversations about follow-up questions. He also sent as a list of nearby properties where they had done roofs (all of which of course look magnificent). Of the companies we had bid on our project, we felt that Shiner offered the best product (including an outstanding, fully transferable warranty), but we ended up deciding that we needed to save a little money on this project and hired a different outfit. But I would not hesitate to call Shiner in the future, whether for roofing needs or other exterior work. Service such as theirs is truly rare.

Got estimate, exchange emails to schedule - had wrong piece initially but got replacement quickly and rescheduled, made repair.

Our tech arrived on time with clearly identified clothing and business vehicle. He was very informative and thorough with process expectations. He was very friendly without being too chatty. He completed repair correctly and efficiently. Emailed copy and hard copy of receipt was provided. Wonderful experience.

Great initial meeting with rep to go over measurements, products, etc. Were willing to price match another estimate from a different company. Good communication leading up to the install. Arrived punctually. No issues with install. Found rotted subflooring and fixed that too. Were careful to paintmatch the outside trim to comply with my HOA (which I didn't even know was important until they brought it up). Love the new doors!

I give them high marks. I would use them again. If all things go smoothly, I am planning on using them next year for the roof. My wife and I are retired and we plan to stay in our house, so I have split the work, the gutters and spouts, the siding and roof into 3 different years to spread out the cost. This is something I worked out with them. I spent a good bit of time with their salesman taking the status of our house, and try to work in a plan that made sense. I am very happy. The siding job was a big job. We have been in the house since 1979, so its the original siding, and we had concerns on the viability of how long it is going to last, so we made the initiative on it, and it looks great. It is a much bigger job than the spouting and gutters and they did an excellent job. They even did the clean up because there was a lot of debris from the prior siding. I have a feeling from what I have been able to gather from researching is that they are probably reasonable in price. They did an excellent job. There were details that I was concerned about because I did not know how it would turn out, because besides just putting up the siding, they had to work around cable. We have cable TV and there is also outside electrical plugs and they did a beautiful job. Afterwards, I walked around, and there is nails and things like that inevitably, and they did a wonderful job cleaning up the property.

I am writing this review now because Shiner came back to do a courtesy inspection of what appeared to be rotting facia board but gave an honest assessment that it was just chipped paint. I appreciated the free and honest inspection and would recommend them to anyone.

The installer arrived around 9 am, checked for lead, made the area safe and installed door and door jamb. Installer was on time, very courteous and cleaned up after.

The tech showed up at appointed time, performed repair (about 1/2 hour) then left. Pretty simple fix.

Very fast. Estimator was exceptional and crew was too. HOWEVER... The back office was insulting, curt and unprofessional! Despite the excellent work by crew and estimator I will not recommend them to anyone. After following completing their customer feedback process in which I indicated how unhappy I was with their back office... No one followed up! There is no excuse for that to happen. I have waited 4 months to post this review. UPDATE... Zero response from company.

Estimate provided, discounts given, however we could not agree on price was $800 difference. After wanting to renegotiate discussed with company I wanted to go with them they sent out another inspector to check on roofing and to try to get costs in line with expectations and stated the job would be more expensive then the original quote because my skylights were non standard. The person who originally gave me the quote works for their company. I felt as if a $800 difference on a $16000 job loses the job for a company they must not be that "Hungry" for business and have too much work already. I recommend stay away unless you like unfair pricing.

We chose Shiner, because we had gotten estimates from 3 companies and all were within $1000. Shiner was in the middle, and offered a better warranty. The crew worked for 2 days, from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m., exactly as the estimator had said. They worked all day and only breaked for lunch. The roof looks beautiful. We did have a hiccup. The crew was surprised when a violent rainstorm came in suddenly on the first evening. They tarped the roof. Because they also tarped the gutters, we had water come in our basement sliding glass door where water flew off the tarp. I let the supervisor know first thing in the morning, and he had a professional cleaning service over within hours. They used fans, shampooed the rug and replaced part of the pad under it. They had to take the gutter diverters off that go under the roof shingles and attach to the chimney. I also wasn't happy with their new gutter diverter, because they had cut into my siding. So they had their engineer design another and came a week later to fix it. We were very happy with the professionalism and responsiveness of Shiner, so I hired them again a month later for another job.

They agreed to put a tarp up because we were about to go out of town and couldn't have the roof repaired before we left. They didn't tell us that they were going to nail the tarp to the roof, with the result that there would be nail holes when it was removed. When they came to give an estimate, they said we should replace the entire roof. We got a second opinion, and it turned out that the roof wouldn't have needed to be replaced if they hadn't put the nail holes in there. When they came back out to look, they agreed that the roof didn't need to be replaced (so evidently they were trying to sell us a new roof that we didn't need). Because of the nail holes they put in, we did ultimately replace the roof (with someone else), which we wouldn't have needed to do. Then they argued with us about whether they did anything wrong. Eventually, they refunded some of our money.

Since we have a house over 35 years old a lot of work was potentially needed -- Roof, Gutters, Spouts, and Siding. Being retired and living on a fixed income cost was a big factor. From the outset, Scott Peterson their rep was most helpful and proactive -- scampering up the roof to give accurate assessments of our needs. Once we sat down to select options he was most knowledgeable and helpful in select the precise approach to our needs. We jointly decided on a multi-year approach focusing on the Gutters and Spouts first. His approach was most cost effective and tailored to our needs as compared to prior estimates from another company. Shiner was highly responsive getting all estimates and work done promptly and professionally. Since we're most happy with the work Shiner Co. did on our Gutters and spouts we have already planned with them to replace the Roofing this coming year.

Professional from start to finish. Workmen excellent, diligent & well supervised. No surprises with initial estimate or finished job. Responsive and follow-up with a walk thru. I would strongly recommend this company.

Tree pruning went awry and limb fell on roof and ruined skylight. Shiner assessed damage, ordered new skylight which had to be fabricated, and installed new skylight when it arrived.

Terrific quality. Very good division of labor between different associates within the company for excellent efficiency and professionalism.

They didn't complete the repairs the first time they came out. (the apron metal on the porch roof was not repaired). They left the wire to the Satellite dish hanging. (I cut off the part I could reach that was hanging over the deck). I called and reported that the job was not finished. (I had to work when they could come out so I wasn't home when they were at my house. I have concern that the repairs that were too high up on the roof for me to see were also not done as promised. When I called and asked that someone come and verify with photos the way the saleman got up on the roof to show me the needed repairs....(very effective sales technique), I was answered with an email that I would be responded to. I never was. They company did come out the next week and complete the porch roof repair and remove the rest of the wire. I also wanted to know about the fourth pipe collar that was very high up on the back of house.....I figured that if 3 of them needed repair, surely the fourth was in bad shape. I asked the sales man who came to my house if he had looked at that one too..... I am sorry to say after my call and email......I have received no communication except to receive a call from their billing department to pay the balance of my bill. (They require a deposit up front.) I have paid my bill and will definitely not use this company in three to five years when I need to replace my roof. I wouldn't trust that they would follow up on any guarantees or promises after they've "finished" the job and collected their money. I am currently looking for another roofing company to come out and inspect the repairs done by Shiner. Hopefully, the fourth pipe collar is in good shape and the repairs done by Shiner are adequate.

They did an excellent job. I would definitely use them again.

It went great! They were on time, the crew and crews supervisor was there the whole time, they contacted the utility company for me and stayed until they showed up.

Contacted shiner April 17th. job scheduled completed may 4th. They have a minimum charge of 595 making this job expensive in my opinion.

They came promptly and were able to find the leak and pointed out another problem that we were not aware of. The second problem we fixed ourselves. There was no pressure from them to add it to the estimate.

Because of its height and the need to match shingle color, my roof is very difficult to maintain. I have used Shiner several times since I bought the house in 1998 and they have always done a great job. They do quality at a fair price. I'm very happy them and won't hesitate to recommend them to anyone who has a roof over their heads.

They were very professional and courteous during the entire process. They called me and gave us an estimate of when the material for the roof repair would be manufactured; they called when the items had been produced to fit the exact area and size of the repair and they called a few days before the service would take place. Overall I am very pleased with the work. They acknowledged that while the early repair was appropriate that it had not been enough, which resulted in the need for additional work to be done. I appreciated their honesty. I think I got a small discount as a result or it could have been because I am a member of Angie's list.

Very professional. Annette in the production dept. was very accommodating with my requests as to when I needed the work done. I wasn't able to be there when the job was done but I could tell that everything was done correctly and exactly how it should be done.

We used Shiner for at least the second time a few months ago. We had a fairly small job that required replacing a siding "freeze strip" that had blown off the house during a wind storm. Unlike some other providers we contacted, they were very responsive and willing to do the job. The scheduled an appointment fairly quickly and were right on time. The sales rep thoroughly explained the work needed and didn't try to upsell in any way. We accepted the quote a few days later and again, the crew was right on time, barely noticeable during the work, and performed the work just as expected, leaving no mess behind. The whole process went just as you'd expect. I always recommend Shiner when I'm talking to people considering work for things in their wheelhouse.
