I recently purchased a house and the HVAC inspection revealed mold in the AC. Lois and David were both great. Lois called me back and was very helpful. When I explained my problem, she sent me information about the issue. I forwarded the pictures I had from my inspection and they concurred there appeared to be mold, but that it was in my HVAC unit not my ducts and that replacing my old system was a better route (what my HVAC inspecctor suggested) rather than trying to clean it. David also told me how to clean out the ducts if it any of the mold seemed to have spread. I appreciated their willingness to share information and not try to sell me services I did not need. If I ever have a problem, I will be calling them in the future.
Description of Work: My HVAC inspection indicated I had mold in my ducts. I called to discuss mold removal.

The labor portion of the project took three days plus a fourth day for removal of equipment and our contaminated goods. This included setting up the containment area (plastic sheeting temporary walls), removal of the entire crawl space insulation PLUS they removed heavy items from the crawl space and placed them outdoors so we could go through them and decide which items we wanted to save and clean ourselves -- all other items were taken away by David and his crew. This was a great help to us as we are not spry enough to crawl around in the crawl space and figure out what all was in there! Air scrubbers were left to run in the containment area. The three days also included dealing with the sump pump area. At the end, the containment area was dismantled and everything returned to normal, albeit with a wonderful new floor and wall surface in the crawl space. Valor returned to attach fasteners to the crawl space floor/wall surface entryway and my husband pointed out additional ceiling joists on the opposite side of the basement that looked suspicious. Pictures were taken and after conferring with David and being given three options for how to handle the additional site, we settled on a process of sanding with a disposal system attached directly to the sander. (not sure I'm describing this correctly) Even though this new area was outside the original contracted scope of work, David immediately sent a two-man crew to remove the newly discovered mold. We had already paid in full and no additional charge was made. This was unexpected but very much appreciated. On the itemized estimate and proposal of work: I told David at the time he drew up the estimate that I would be consulting with the contractor who has done many major projects on our house and who is a professional home inspector as well. Our contractor reviewed the estimate and deemed it "very thorough and professional". That was our feeling, as well. On the timeliness, efficiency, and care taken with the surrounding areas of our house: My husband was home during the entire time Valor worked on this project. A four-man crew plus David worked on-site during the first two days. To save us from mold spores becoming airborne in the upstairs areas of the house, they decided to use the basement egress window for inserting and removing their equipment and everything else. This was unexpected and much appreciated. The work was neat and complete with care taken with every object removed from the crawl space. They showed up when they said they would, worked steadily to finish the job in the one week we had before we needed to start using the basement storage area for a shipment of household goods arriving from Kuwait, and they returned to put the finishing touch of special fasteners on the crawl space plastic. When David called to say he would return to do this he said something about being compulsively neat and I agree! We are 100% satisfied with our entire experience with Valor Mold Removal. From the initial contact, education (and calming down) with Lois Myrick (she must be a psychologist in her other life) to the estimate with David and his work and that of his team led by Juan to accomplish the removal and remediation, we are fully satisfied and grateful that we found this company via Angie's List. The positive reviews are well deserved.
Description of Work: Lois Myrick of Valor Mold Removal talked me through their services and what might apply to our situation. She is very patient and reassuring and instills confidence that the mold problem can be solved and that the Valor company has the technical knowledge, experience and satisfied customers to stand on. She scheduled a visit for the company owner, David Myrick, to come to our house, assess the situation and prepare an estimate. We knew we had mold as it was visible on some ceiling joists and boxes and furniture in our basement storage room and near the sump pump. David discovered extensive mold presence in our crawl space and some other places as well. He described the methods best suited for removing mold from these locations. Since our walls and ceiling are unfinished and the mold was visible and we were not planning to sell our house anytime soon, he counseled against spending money on a professional mold assessment to measure the presence pre and post treatment. This made good sense to us. We could see the mold so no need to add an extra expense and delay the start of the remediation project. We settled on total removal from all joists in one area -- this involved building a containment area where mold removal was done with high-powered equipment that scrubbed the air and expelled the residue to the outside via a basement window. Ceiling joists were sanded and vacuumed. For the crawl space David recommended removing the mold-infested insulation as well as all objects stored there and encapsulating the floor and side walls with a thick heavy-duty plastic. Mold was removed from the walls near the sump pump and a special wall covering was applied there. Finally, we purchased a high powered dehumidifier that drains into our basement floor drain. The separate cost of the Sanidry XP whole house dehumidifier and its installation was $1752 total. David recommended the dehumidifier as humidity was the cause of our mold infestation. For the past two years we had been without a dehumidifier. We learned a lesson!

I was very impressed with David's, knowledge, professionalism, honesty and sincerity. He did not mince words in telling me exactly what the problems were and how he would correct them. He was averse to many of the harsh chemicals others use and used a more environmentally-friendly approach to tackling the mold. As a pet owner, I appreciated that. Before I even met David, I spoke with his Mom on the phone to schedule the appointment and she was such a delight it made me very comfortable with having Valor in my home. And David did not disappoint. The work was timely, thorough and professional. I would definitely hire them again!

Valor provided extensive air scrubbing services which were effective in abating the issue. They also directed a home deep cleaning, paying extra attention to the most affected rooms. David was also responsive and knowledgeable when I had questions regarding the job. He really knows his stuff and is happy to share his expertise. Valor really works with you to solve your problem. They are very ingenuitive when developing solutions to your mold issue. I would nominate them for the Super Service Award.
Description of Work: David and Lois of Valor Mold Removal provided mold remediation services to me after a mold spore contamination issue that happened when a well known area duct cleaner removed mold from my house air ducts. The Valor folks were extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and responsive when I contacted them on a Sunday! The situation was so bad in my house that I was sleeping in a tent in the back yard. David even answered all of my questions when I called after 9pm when the contamination first occurred. He has also made himself available for advice and guidance via email.

Lois and David at Valor Cleaning are true professionals! They organized our contract plumber and electrical specialists to setup a complex mold remediation that occurred in a difficult-to-access location of our home. Everything happened according to schedule, and we (and our tenants) are very happy with the result! I would be very glad to recommend them to my family and friends. We've been going through an extremely stressful repair process, and they were the only part of our services that worked seamlessly! Thank you.

The level of personal attention provided by Valor was above and beyond what I would expect from most companies. I was in contact with David Myrick from Valor over the course of two weeks. That seems like a long time given the scope of work provided, above, but this was mainly due to David working with me before and after he came out to do the inspection. Unlike one other company I contacted, David did not employ any high-pressure sales tactics. He really took the time to explain the "5 Ws" of mold growth and removal, even going so far as to send me (before I was even really a customer) a paper he'd written on mold inspections and prevention that really calmed my nerves about the threat of mold, and a company pamphlet on what to do if you do locate mold. When he came out and took a look at my basement, he spent several hours actively listening to what I had to say as far as the property's history and my own concerns, providing in-depth responses and really taking me through what would happen if mold was located. I would definitely recommend him.

The first visit was to assess the situation. We had mildew in a back closet in the basement. David was excellent, he took his time looking at everything, took photos, and then spent plenty of time explaining what he found and what the options were. We chose to have Valor clean the basement - they use UV light to find mildew and then vacuum using a HEPA vacuum. For this cleaning we did not have them do a "deep cleaning" which would have cost quite a bit more, but just inspect and clean what they found. David explained all the options but recommended against the more expensive cleaning as our problem was not very bad. They arrived on schedule, as promised, and went to work. They did an excellent job, finding more than what David had found, and cleaned everything. They set up a huge fan to exhaust the air out of the basement and left that overnight. We noticed one spot that looked like they had missed; we phoned David and when they came to remove the fan they did that spot too. When they arrived to remove the fan they walked us through the basement and showed us what they had found and what to look for. Valor had offered to install a standalone dehumidifier but we are having our HVAC contractor install a dehumidifier next week - so hopefully this won't happen again! In summary, Valor took plenty of time to explain everything, reassured us about the severity of the problem, and their price was competitive with other contractors. They are a small family-owned business and I recommend them!

We had a rain water leak in our basement that made quite a mess. I contacted Valor through Angie's List about the issue. David Myrick responded very quickly via email, provided some good documentation about mold removal and spoke with me on the phone for about 20 minutes. He was very knowledgable and a very calming influence. In the end, I decided that our issue was not severe and did not hire Valor, but based on my interaction with David, I will if I ever require this kind of clean up service. He definitely seems to have the interests of the customer at heart.

We called Valor Cleaning to come take a look at some mold that was forming in the basement. What was originally thought to be a small affected area turned into being the entire basement. David and his crew from Valor Cleaning completely eradicated all the mold and prevented any of it spreading. We were very impressed with the steps they took to get the job done right. With his expertise and experience, David was able to let us know the cause of the mold and helped us with plans to keep it from coming back. David also provided us with excellent references for other work around the house. This was a major project. Valor Cleaning completed it quickly and efficiently. David gave us the sense that we were his top priority. They finished the job under budget and left us confident and comfortable with the basement. We will highly recommend this company!

David is amazing!! I just bought my house in March 2013 and mold reappeared in March 2014 throughout the entire attic. My roof was just over one year old. I hired a building engineer to assess my home moisture issue both in the home and in my attic.. David reviewed the report and attempted to reach the engineer who did not respond to him. I have been working with him for over 2 months in the capacity of assessing what needed to be done and in what order. He had given me reports/photographs and assisted with mold testing samples being sent to the lab. David is very extremely conscientious, professional, thorough, honest and dependable and tells the "truth" about mold. He lets you know what you can and cannot expect and what to do to get the moisture that created it under control. I would refer him, and use him again York minute!! I opted for the bleach way after I had additional venting done in my attic to be on the conservative side for cost reasons. His mom Lois is wonderful as well!

I would recommend Valor Cleaning without reservation. I hope I do not have mold again, but I would not hesitate to call David at Valor Cleaning if I do. At the beginning of my project, which involved mold remediation at the same time as roof replacement, David spent time examining my attic mold problem, then explaining his and other alternative methods of mold remediation. His estimate was neither the cheapest, nor the most expensive. My project required coordination between Valor Cleaning and my roofing company, and David did this very well. On the day of the project, the weather interfered, and the roofers were only able to complete half their intended work. This forced David and his crew to come back another day to complete my project. Instead of charging me for a second day of work, David and his crew stuck to their original estimate. The work was completed in conjunction with my roof replacement with no problems. I was very satisfied with David's professionalism and personally pleasant demeanor. As I said, I would not hesitate to hire Valor again!

Valor Cleaning did an outstanding job remediating mold in one second floor closet and the back of our kitchen. From the first friendly phone call with Lois to the final clean up with David, Valor Cleaning was upfront, honest, fair and professional. The pricing was very fair. David and his team were polite, efficient and clean as they tore out and removed the moldy drywall and wood. David explained each step clearly. They set up containment barriers and a HEPA filter that took away any worry about contamination in other parts of the house. They worked quickly to completely and correctly treat the mold, and they worked until it was fully gone. I highly, highly recommend Valor Cleaning for their excellent work and genuine integrity.

As indicated in other reviews, the primary contact of the firm is Lois Myrick, and the remediation work is done by David Myrick (her son). Valor is also affiliated with a reconstruction company (The Cross Company) that is run by Lois' husband (Donnie Cross). I called Valor and spoke with Lois in mid-November regarding a potential environmental issue developing in my home, but had to delay meeting with David until I recovered from illness. That meeting finally took place today (10/30/13). Before today's meeting, David, and previously, Lois, had reviewed an inspection report that I'd shared with them, for information and background. When David arrived today, he asked me to first show him the rooms where the problem appears, and walk him through the situation, before reviewing the steps recommended in the report, advising on appropriate next steps, or even discussing a proposal. After touring the areas in my home, David took the time to review the report's recommendations together with me, the pros/cons of various options, and then provided me with pragmatic suggestions for next steps that take into account other updating work that I had planned for my home even prior to this issue arising, which may in fact solve any environmental problem, as well. David was clearly knowledgeable, thorough, and professional, and to my pleasant surprise, came up with recommendations that are less drastic and well-focused, notwithstanding that they mean that there would be no need for demo/remediation work from his firm --- at least not until or unless there are more definite and clear indications as to the need for that type of work following completion of the other project that I had already planned that may address the possible environmental issue, while also enhancing the value and the appearance of my home. At the end of our meeting, my husband arrived home. Although David had another appointment still to get to, he took the time to brief my husband on his impressions, and to answer any further questions. The prospect of dealing with any environmental issue in one's home can be daunting and a bit overwhelming. David Myrick's professionalism and obvious integrity, however, helped sort through the immediate priority actions vs. the eventual possible needs. He put my mind at ease about the issues at hand, next steps, and gave me confidence that worst case scenario (if demolition/remediation ends up being necessary), Valor would be a competent and trust worthy company - and above all, individuals - with which/whom to do business. As a result of the meeting with David Myrick, in addition to the several telephone conversations that I had previously had with Lois Myrick, I have a very positive impression of this firm, and have already requested that its associated company (The Cross Company) contact me to replace a bathroom exhaust fan, and possibly other handyman projects in the future. It's clear that Valor and Cross are family businesses, and given the quality of the interactions with Lois and David, I look forward to a similar interaction with Cross. In this case, "all in the family" can only be a very good thing! More broadly and to be fair, and as I told David, I had also met with three other environmental/remediation firms recently --- two that did not impress me at all, but one other that also had demonstrated a high degree of professionalism and integrity, and a keen desire to help solve the mystery environmental situation in two small areas of my home. While it sometimes seems hard to find competent and honest contractors out there, it is reassuring to find that they do actually exist, especially when one is concerned about a potentially complex issue affecting one's home. It is a double bonus to find that, and good people, in the process. Thank you, Lois and David.
Description of Work: Following a thorough but somewhat inconclusive inspection for a strange odor in a couple of locations in my home by a highly reputable industrial hygienist expert, and receiving a bid from two firms for possible related demo/remediation work, I contacted Valor, based on Angie's List reviews, to get their input and help in clarifying/prioritizing appropriate next steps, and to obtain a third bid for possible demo work, and reconstruction.

When my husband and I noticed some staining on the laundry room baseboard, we knew we were dealing with some water damage, but when we pulled off the baseboard we realized it was so much worse...MOLD! I have severe asthma, so we knew we needed to call in the experts right away. This family-owned and operated company was a lifesaver. Lois, in the office, and David, on the scene, were calming influences the whole way. First off, communication is this company's strong suit. They return all calls the same day, and they were in constant contact with us by e-mail. I really felt like I could contact them with any question or concern, and they would respond right away with patience. They also stick to appointment times, and always let you know when they are 30 minutes out from your house, so you don't have to wait at home all day to receive them. David really knows his stuff. We got a couple of estimates. Valor was at the high end, but we felt the cost was justified. As my husband put it, David was clearly a geek for mold. He was incredibly thorough during the estimate, explained every step to my husband, and prepared a very detailed contract. The other company only spent a few minutes in the basement before giving an estimate. David is a certified mold remediation supervisor, and obtained a Virginia mold remediation supervisor license (which was only briefly required by the state of VA, but nice to know he has it). Other contractors did not have the same licensing and certification. Also, Valor does "flat rate pricing," so the estimate is the fee you will pay unless they discover drastically more mold or other surprises once they open the wall. The other company charged "square footage pricing" which meant it would be easy to justify raising the cost once they opened the wall. As it happened, David did find a few surprises in our walls and there was slightly more mold than first anticipated. True to his word, there were no additional fees over the estimate. We also used Valor's sister company, the Cross Company to do the rebuild. Thanks to this family, we feel like we have our house back. Lois could start a second career as a family counselor, she was so wonderful at calming us down and walking us through the process. I would highly recommend the Valor company to anyone dealing with mold.
Description of Work: Treated mold growth in a basement wall between a bathroom and laundry room due to a leaky pipe in the wall. This involved the following: set up containment barriers for the bathroom and laundry room; set up an air scrubber to filter airborne mold spores; removed all mold-infected materials, which included drywall, insulation, and the bathroom vanity; sanded mold-affected wood framing; HEPA vacuumed all horizontal surfaces in the containment area; and treated the framing with an anti-microbial agent.

Valor was very professional and did a wonderful job while maintaining a very clean environment for us during the work. They were on time and communicated everything very clearly so there were no surprises. David is very knowledgeable about this work and wen t the extra mile to make sure it was done right.
Description of Work: Valor gave us a very detailed estimate after inspecting the entire basement. Then came a second time after other estimates confused us because they recommended a much more expensive remediation of the entire basement as if it was necessary.David was very honest and thorough and we went with his recommendation which was thorough and a lot less money. Valor remediated a small section of our basement where mold resulted from a water leak.

jFirst was the phone call & I was confused because I have never dealt with this before. Lois Myrick responded and sent me info on mold as I knew absolutely nothing about it. I appreciated this immensely. Then there were 3 steps to take for this procedure. First I had to get an air sample taken. They do it independently and have a specialist come out who is an expert in air quality. Lois recommended Avery from Fusion Services. He came out and spent about 2 hours testing the air around the house and outside and took samples of mold and found water damage. He also took photographs. He was excellent and this was an education. When we got the report it was indicated that the air levels weren't dangerous which was a relief. However we did have mold that we should remedy. He then sent the report to both Lois Myrick and myself. The next step was David Myrick coming out and he was splendid. He was here a few hours and investigated like a scientist. He explained everything in great detail and I have never learned so much about this subject. In fact, I was taking notes. David really knows his stuff. He meticulously went around the basement and also took photographs. He explained all our options and discussed the prices. Since we are thinking about selling he told us probably the easiest thing to do was to take care of the immediate mold. It's a solution for right now and doesn't cost a fortune. I was very impressed with David as he wasn't trying to make money but to do the honest and right thing and satisfy our problem currently. The appointment was scheduled and the work was done about a week and a half later. Per usual, he called before he came, which is so polite and arrived on time. He and his assistant set everything up and went to work. In approximately two and a half hours they had the mold contained, disposed of, and had the basement looking and smelling great. In fact, the basement has never smelled or looked this good. We were immensely satisfied.
Description of Work: David Myrick removed the mold that was existing. Used a Hepa vacuum and air filter machine to get rid of the mold and debris plus the mold smell. Then he and his assistant painted over the mold areas. He left the area looking and smelling wonderful. Plus he even took trash out and cleaned up. This business and it's owners are keepers. David is a great worker and has a disposition that makes it very easy and nice to have a project done. Others could learn from him.

I called them and left a message with their answering service, David called me back and was very helpful answering my questions and such. I sent some pictures to him and he gave me his opinion and info. He gave me names and numbers to call for a testing service. They were very nice and helpful to me, they did not push any services on me, they referred me to a third party for testing to see if I need to utilize their services. It is doubtful that this is mold based on what David and another guy told me however I certainly appreciate their time and expert knowledge.
Description of Work: I removed some carpet from my condo and I found a black substance on the wood floor underneath the carpet. It looked like glue to me. I was surprised to see the padding glued in spots, I thought usually it is stapled. I thought nothing of it but a friend thought it could be mold.

David from Valor Cleaning gave us a free estimate on mold remediation -- we have a small water spot that may have mold under it in our pantry from a leaky jug of water. David was extremely professional and helpful. He explained the process to me on the phone, came to do the estimate within 2 days of my call, and was very honest and up front about the extent of the damage. He did not think we needed to do anything about it unless we really wanted to since it was so minor. He told me if it were his kitchen, he would not have done the work. To me, this demonstrates the utmost honesty, because he could have told us that it was worse than it was just to make money off of us. I would definitely recommend Valor to anyone who wants honest opinions on a mold situation. Thank you David!

The bottom line is, David Myrick has the highest work ethic of anyone I have ever worked with in the home improvement/home contracting business. He is knowledgable, professional, detail oriented and an excellent communicator, including passing on additional tips even after the job is finished. David is what I call the mold engineer for Valor. His mom Lois, is the friendly office manager, aka customer hand holder. She did a great job of explaining the overall process to me. If you need a rebuild, Lois's husband, Donnie of the Cross Company, is your man. Our house is old and quirky, but Donnie was undaunted. He did an excellent job from wallboard to putting ceramic tile on a sloping basement floor. David Myrick is not satisfied with a job unless the customer is satisfied. You are in good hands with this family.
Description of Work: Because of years of neglect, we had a mold problem in our basement involving rafters, wallboard and flooring. Valor Cleaning came in, took photos, made detailed drawings and presented a proposal which was much more on target than any of the other companies I had contacted.

Overall, we were extremely pleased with the work done by Valor. We're only sorry we did not write our review earlier. They were very professional and courteous and made a very difficult situation much easier. Having never encountered such a problem, we were very worried about the work involved. However, from the start, both David and Lois at Valor were extremely patient and helpful, answering all of our questions. They worked with our schedule and were always available to address any questions. Once the cleaning was finished, the rebuild work was done by the Cross Company who we would also strongly recommend.
Description of Work: In November 2012, we discovered that our ice maker line and a pipe located within our kitchen walls had likely been leaking for a long time, months, maybe years. We required extensive mold remediation and rebuild services. Given the extensive water damage and mold, our lower kitchen cabinets, refrigerator, dishwasher and sink and the walls behind and floor beneath them were taken out, in addition to large sections of our basement walls and a small section of our living room wall. The remaining areas were dried and cleaned. Having never encountered such a problem, we were very worried about the work involved. However, from the start, both David and Lois at Valor were extremely patient and helpful, answering all of our questions. David initially came to our house to review the damage. He took very thorough measurements and many pictures of the visible damage and provided a detailed estimate. Much of the remaining damage was underneath the kitchen cabinets and within the basement walls so we were unsure of the extent of the damage until the cabinets and walls were taken out. David and his team kept us up to date as the work was being done and worked flexibly with us when they found additional damage that changed the schedule of their work. They made a very difficult situation much easier and our house is in great condition. We would highly recommend Valor Cleaning and the Cross Company who did the rebuild work.

Mold testing (because it is unethical to do both mold testing and removal). Bait & switch stunts. Scare tactics. Exaggerating the problem. Up-selling schemes. Careless, amateur work. Corner-cutting laziness.
