They were very prompt to come out and give us an estimate. Though we got an estimate for replacing both zones, we opted only to do one zone and the water heater this year and the other zone next year. We also had them replace an automated thermostat that went out on zone 2. They performed the work on the scheduled date, came back out when we thought we had a problem and thoroughly checked the system to make sure all was operating correctly. We plan to use them again.
Description of Work: Replaced water heater, programmable thermostat and the primary HVAC unit which conditions the first two floors (over 3,000 sf)

I did not end up using this company but I would call them again in the future or recommend them to others.
Description of Work: It was a quick and easy process to set up an apt with this company when my 20+ year old furnace died. The repairman was punctual, polite and efficient. He tried several things to get the furnace chugging to get a little heat into the house but they did not work. He was very thorough in explaining all the options available. This company was one of the more reasonable out of the 6 companies who came to price the job.

They were on time, and the equipment they installed was fine, except that they tore up the VCT tile floor in my basement. They damaged about 40 tiles. I noticed the scratches on the floor, and they had offered to repair it there, but they did not have the equipment, so I did not accept. I talked to them first and got estimates from flooring companies. I got a flooring company to fix it, and I subtracted that price from my heating and air conditioning bill. I probably will use them for a little while because I have got two years’ labor on the equipment and see how things go from there.

Response from Shanahan's Heating & Cooling Inc
Shanahan's Heating & Cooling has served the Northern Virginia area for more than 20 years. We work hard to ensure that every customer receives the best possible service and we enjoy an excellent reputation for doing so. We believe that the most important component of excellent customer service is the response to a client's needs and concerns. We sincerely regret the floor tiles in the customer's home were damaged. We made very effort to address the issue without delay and to resolve the issue of the "scratched" tiles to the customer's satisfaction. Kirk Shanahan, the owner of Shanahan's, immediately responded by inspecting the damaged tiles on the day of the installation. The customer obtained estimates to replace the scratched floor tiles, she chose the higher estimate, and we were happy to accept the charges so the customer would be satisfied. This was the first claim ever made for damaged floor tiles and we hope to never have another one!

Our A/C went out late on a Sunday afternoon. I went ahead and called Shanahan's, assuming I would leave a voice message. I was impressed that I was actually able to leave a message with a live person from an answering service. Monday morning I was again surprised when they returned my call nice and early. Since my days are flexible, I agreed to a 1-3 day appointment with a 30-minute call ahead. The technician arrived on Tuesday morning, quickly diagnosed the problem and corrected it. I was extremely pleased with their work and will definitely use them again!
Description of Work: The technician found a short in the A/C wiring in an old house, rewired appropriately and checked refrigerant levels.

Even though they didn't do any work, we will definitely use them when we do need to replace the furnace. It's just so nice dealing with people who are honest and have integrity.
Description of Work: Another company said we needed a new furnace so we had several people out for estimates. The other companies didn't even look at the old furnace, just told us how much a new one would cost. When Shanahan's came out they looked over the old furnace and said we were fine; we didn’t need a new one.

My AC wasn't working, so I called another company, TwinTech, to come out and fix the problem. They gave me a quote of $900 to fix the AC Unit, which included $600 for a new motor and $160 for a new contactor. However, TwinTech said that they didn't think my AC unit was going to last more then three months, so I should just replace the whole system for $7000! Wanting a second quote on a new system, I called Shanahan's to get a quote on a new unit. The tech came out and told me that I don't need a new unit just yet. I could get more life out of my old one just by making some repairs. He charged me $160 for the motor, including labor, a fourth of the cost of TwinTech. And it turns out that the contactor was a $15 part and $10 labor, which means TwinTech had a 6x markup for that part! The tech thinks I can get another three years out of my unit that TwinTech wanted to replace. When it does finally go, I'll be calling Shanahan's. UPDATE: My heat pump finally died. I called Shanahan's, and they gave me a good price for a new heat pump. They installed it in November, and it's been working well ever since.

Great Job. The technician, Larry, was right on time and very professional. Checked out the gas logs and cleaned the pilot, then showed us how to relight it/adjust it. He even cleaned the logs and reset them. I had called several other companies for estimates on this job: they ranged from $195 to $250. Shanahan's price was $85. I was so impressed with the service and price that I intend to go with Shanahan's for a yearly service contract on my HVAC.
Description of Work: Inspected and cleaned gas logs and gas pilot (hadn't been serviced in over 10 years). Relit pilot and checked out the entire system.

They did a good job in installing everything, but the men scratched up many vinyl tiles that were recently installed in our basement. We did not discover the damage until after paying the firm the full amount. We did not raise this issue with the company at all since most all of the damage is hard to see and we have previously kept matching extra new tiles that we could easily use to replace damaged tiles if we wanted to. In addition, a year after installing the heat pump system(on 9/2009), I wanted to replace the heat pump air filter myself, but the original job did not allow enough room to remove and replace the old filter. I contacted Shanahan and told them to please fix this problem. They sent out a crew that rearranged the inside the house layout and installed the new filter that I had. I had to pay an additional $100.00 which I did not object to since they spent a lot of time in fixing the problem and installing the new filter for me. Taking out the filter and cleaning parts of the filter system is very time consuming that I experienced myself in 2010 which further make me feel the $100 charge was not too much. Overall we are pleased with the performance of the system(that was recommended to us by Shanahan) and have had no problems with it since it was installed in 2008.

These guys are great! During the hot summer of 2010, I was 7-9 months pregnant and our A/C was making a horrible whining sound and even stopped working on us. They came out two separate times to repair the unit. Murphy's law ensured that the whining didn't occur when they were out, but they replaced a capacitor and a rubber gasket and got it working again. Overall, they were extremely responsive given that there were so many others with A/C out that needed attention. However, since I was pregnant they took care of me as soon as possible. I gave them a 'B' in punctuality because one time they said they were coming out and never showed (again, it was a rather busy time for them and I was being 'squeezed' in), however, when I called, they apologized profusely and sent someone out immediately. I gave them a 'B' in quality since our unit still whined after they left. Our unit is old and should be replaced (though they didn't push this on us at all) and as I mentioned above, the whining never occurred when they were here. We used them to do regular maintenance on our A/C unit the previous year and they did an excellent job. I would highly recommend them again. A great company to work with!

They came and got my system running for only the cost a service call, as opposed to another company that told me that it would cost over $400 to fix the system. The problem is the technician for Shanahan left the jumpers in the system and it ran continually for hours until I was able to contact Shanahan on how to shut it off. When I finally did the system no longer flowed air throught he ducts, even though it ran. Something had shut down. Which Shanahan claimed had nothing to do with the system running full blast for hours. The good part is they fixed it for just another $100 service call. Overall since they saved me a lot of money by not recommending that I do all the work the first company wanted do (over $1300 worth) I will use them again

They installed it improperly. I had another two other professionals look at the humidifier and they confirmed it was not installed correctly. I have called them and the owner has yet to call back. It really has never been working properly due to their improper installation. The owner actually cursed at me in front of his employees during an installation of split level system.

Response from Shanahan's Heating & Cooling Inc
The April Aire humidifier was installed in November 2005. A review of eleven service invoices since 2005 indicate that the humdifier was serviced every winter season and was found to be in good working order. At no time did the member voice a concern that there may be a problem with the humidifer installation or operation. The April Aire humifier is installed where space allows, and per manufacturer specifications can be installed on the hot OR cold water line. When installed on the cold water line it's more economical. Customer satisfaction is of utmost importance to Shanahan's Heating and Cooling, therefore, our service technician returned in January 2011 and moved the connection to the hot water line. Our company takes pride in our reputation for professionalism and it is always our policy to treat every customer with respect.

I called Shanahan's because they had high ratings in Checkbook, and told them I was interested in a new furnace and air-conditioner. I also wanted a humidifier and air purifier added to my system. They said one of their technicians would be out on a certain date, and that they do not send salesmen out to perform these services. The technician came out and examined my existing units, answered my questions and gave me a proposal. The firm installs Trane equipment. which has a good reputation. I later called to indicate I would accept their proposal, and they set up an installment date approximately 3 weeks later. They arrived on that date and spent the entire day installing the equipment, and then one of the technicians explained how things worked and the necessary maintenance. I was pleased with the work performed and their professionalism.

Overall, I was satisfied that the services were done efficiently and at a reasonable cost.
Description of Work: I had Shanahan's do a physical checkup of the two heating and cooling units that are in my house. One unit is in the attic. The mechanic, Jimmie, opened the units and inspected the hardware and circuits. Where necessary he cleaned surfaces. One problem was found. The outdoors cooling unit needed a coolant recharge. The material cost was $50. Labor charges were $145 for the total 70 minute service time.

We have used Shanahan's for over 10 years, since they converted our house to gas heat. We lost our a/c one night before one of the 100 degree days was predicted. We thought we were going to cook in our house. Shanahan's came to our house in the early the next afternoon, diagnosed a blown starter capcitor in a few minutes and replaced it with one on the truck. While the system started up, he checked our freon level, inside unit operation and talked to us about air flow and ducts. He was done in an hour.

A service technician was at our townhouse within 8 hours of our call to Pam at Shanahan's. A follow-up call to Pam the next day had a service tech here within one hour. We had numerous problems not easily diagnosed on the first call. On our 16-year-old heat pump, we had a bad printed circuit board, which is being ordered, and too many filters of the wrong type in our vents and blower system. The pleats were too dense and the holes in our filters were too fine causing back pressure and too low an air flow, which can burn out a blower motor. The technician was extremely knowledgeably and courteous. Our outlay for two visits during the past 24 hours totaled less than $200. Can't imagine how anyone could ask for better service. They are good.
Description of Work: Even though the July temperature outside was near 100 degrees, our Emergency Heat was randomly turning on. The technician performed an evaluation of the heat pump on our townhouse, cleaned several components, removed an unnecessary filter we had installed, adjusted the system, and identified a bad printed circuit board.

Kirk Shanahan provided an on site inspection to determine how we might obtain better ventilate two additions to our house plus the replacement of our furnace and air conditioning coil. He determined that running three supply ducts to our glass space and a return duct to our office addition would improve the ventilation to both areas. All services were included within the quoted price of $4,700. The crew arrived promptly on the 29th and completed the work that day in a professional and enthusiastic manner. Some of the duct work required time in the attic and running an in wall return to avoid holes in our bedroom wall. We should note that this was an emergency job because of the extreme heat present during late April and the Shanahan crew had us up and running quite comfortably from that day forward. We endorse this company without qualification and will be using it in July of 2011 to provide an air conditioner and furnace in our daughter's home.

This is second time using company and have been great both times. First time used for no heat-fixed fast and efficiently by Stan and Jimmy.(about 350.00) Allen came out and fixed problem - All techs are friendly-no pressure sales for any type of service plan(which has been an issue with other service providers), but great explanation of issue and suggestions on keeping unit maintained. Also all were very polite and thank goodness not critical of my unit-which I have experienced with others. Also dispatcher(if its Vickie) is great and prompt with returning calls and setting appointment. I will use again and recommend this to anyone who wants good old fashioned service

Didn't hire the company for the work.
Description of Work: Got a quote for a new Trane heat pump. Based on the other quotes I received, the quote was expensive. Also, somewhat concerned about what they quoted me for a new thermostat. They quoted me $225 for an old-school, manual mercury thermostat (Honeywell Y594R1243). Not sure why they would replace what I already had (manual mercury) with the same thing -- why not quote a digital thermostat? Made me feel like I was being taken...
