As discussed above, Shanahan's has come through for me each and every time. I recommend Shanahan's without hesitation.
Description of Work: Shanahan's never ceases to amaze, and I often ask a lot of them. Kirk has set and maintains a standard in professionalism, quality of work, and pricing that surpasses everyone else in the industry by a large margin. This is evident in Kirk himself, the friendly voices on the telephone, and the entire crew of professionals. I first reached out to Shanahan's 3 years ago, when I needed to dismantle my HVAC unit and water heater in coordinated fashion because of other work that was being done on my house. I also had a longstanding short cycling issue of my furnace that others had not been able to solve. Kirk himself came to assess the project and provide an estimate. He later stopped by to make sure the work was done well. Needless to say, the work was top notch, and at a fraction of the cost quoted by other providers who have "A" ratings on Angie's list. Shanahan's also worked with us to make sure there was minimal dirsuption of water and heat access. I have since relied on Shanahan's for regular maintenance and times when I was in a pinch. This included today, when I called frantically because my AC (old system I am still nursing) failed right before the weekend. Shanahan's always comes through in exemplary fashion. I recommend Kirk and the Shanahan team without hesistation.

I've used Shanahan's since September 2010, when they installed a replacement AC compressor and air handler at my home. (Note: I switched to Shanahans after getting quotes from my original provider and 3 other companies who were rated in Washington Consumer Checkbook, I wasn't an Angies List member at the time!)I've found Shanahan's to be upfront about costs and service requirements, honest in their customer interactions with me, extremly prompt to all service calls, and always polite. This year, I received my annual service renewal contract, but somehow misplaced it. I called to request a replacement copy so I could pay my annual bill, and left a message with the answering service. A replacement copy of the contract arrived the next business day. This prompted me to write this review, just to say how much I appreciate all the good service I've received for the past two years, and how delighted I am to have found this company. What especially impressed me was their initial honesty when I needed my AC equipment replace back in 2010. Many HVAC companies were installing expensive equipment and pocketing large profits due to the tax credit frenzy. Shanahans assessed my existing equipment and was very up front in explaining why my purchase couldn't qualify for the tax credit. They explained that if I upgraded to a much more expensive compressor, I could qualify, but given the size of my house that might not be the most cost-effective purchase for me or a good return on my investment. This was immediately following another contractor saying to me, "all my customers get the tax credit" (wink, wink, nod, nod). Well, my intention was never to be a tax cheat, and I was offended by the presumption of that other provider that I might do so.Not everyone sees this as I do, admittedly, but I really appreciate the honesty of the Shanahan representatives. They turned down a potentially larger sale in order to provide sound consumer advice and honest service. I know they'll be honest with me going forward, and I've continued my maintenance contract with them. Each time they've been out, the crew has been on time, efficient, and always cleaned up afterwards. The company maybe small, but they hire excellent employees, and they are good to their customers. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Annual contracted Service Maintenance Agreement for annual Heating, AC, and Humidifier checks. In addition to my original my original comments for this service, Shannahans promptly sent me a refund check when they realized they had incorrectly charged me for the humidistat filter that was included under my maintenance agreement. I wouldn't have caught this error myself. I continue to be pleased and impressed at the honesty, integrity, proactivity, and great service offered by this local family-owned company.

Great. My A/C broke down during an incredible heat wave and just before a holiday and planned vacation. I was desperate. Called a number of firms who told me they would not be able to get to me for a week or more. Finally went to Angie's list and found Shanahans. They made special arrangements given my special situation and came out the next day. Turned out to be a relatively minor problem that they corrected on the spot and instructed me on how to prevent in the future. Then amazingly they told me that despite the fact that my units were builder grade originals (12 years old) that their educated estimate was I could get another 2 years out of both before replacement was required. My panic was over. My dogs would not fry in the heat while I was on vacation and the combination of my daughter in the evenings and dog walkers during the day could proceed as planned. Shanahan's has my loyalty and so does Angie's list. You led them to me and it was worth every penny I paid for my subscription.
Description of Work: Great experience!! Talented, effective, efficient and saved me money. I was ready to replace one of my outside A/C units and they actually corrected the existing problem and recommended I wait another 12-24 months to replace the unit. I was overwhelmed by their lack of desire to take advantage of my vulnerability during an awful heat wave.

Central air conditioning stopped cooling Sunday morning; Called Shanahans at 6:30 AM Monday morning, and left a message (the office was not yet open, but there was an actual person to take my info!). After their office opened, they (Pam) called me around 8:30 and scheduled a technician. Suggested technician should arrive by late morning. The technician, Allen, arrived around 11:20 with a young assistant. Allen immediately diagnosed the problem and replaced a failed capacitor in the outside compressor unit. Allen showed how the cooling fins were dirty and needed to be cleaned annually. (Dirty fins mean the compressor works harder which can stress the system leading to failed capacitor, etc. and higher operation cost.) He helpfully demonstrated & hosed the fins off. System was back running before noon. Wow: it's been very hot, they got out here and fixed it quickly and I'm very pleased with Shanahans! The technicians and office staff were all professional, pleasant, and helpful.

Our air conditioning wasn't working. It took them a day or so to get into their busy schedule. I liked that the money for them to come out include the first 1/2 hour of repair work. So besides the cost of the part, we were covered with the initial fee. Some companies charge a diagnostic, then a labor fee, plus the part. I am pleased with their responsiveness and professionalism.

Our 11-year-old air conditioning unit stopped working suddenly on the afternoon of June 14th. We already had a service plan with Shanahan's, so we called them at 4pm and they said they would send someone out first thing the next morning (between 8am-1pm). This was fine with us since the weather was not extremely hot at the time and therefore we didn't require immediate emergency service. The technician arrived around 10:30am on the morning of June 15th and thoroughly assessed the problem: freon leaks in the indoor coil and in the outside unit. The technician was very honest in telling us that there was no permanent fix for this problem; rather than pay $100+ to add freon every week, he advised us that we were better off replacing the entire AC unit and coil (which, admittedly, were old, cheaply manufactured, and already due to be replaced). The technician quoted us two different systems on the spot, complete with written estimates and brochures; we chose the better and slightly more expensive of the two based on higher quality ratings and longer warranty length. Much to our great surprise and relief, Mr. Shanahan himself called us and asked if we wanted the new unit and coil to be installed on the same day (thanks to a last-minute cancellation in their schedule)! We were very pleased at such prompt service, since the weather was expected to turn hot and humid in the next few days. Mr. Shanahan and his team of two technicians were at our home by 12:45pm and completed the whole job by 4:15pm. They replaced our old AC unit and coil, hauled away the old unit and coil, and left all the work areas entirely clean and spotless. (They even used drop clothes to cover the carpet in our basement since they had to walk back and forth between our outside unit and the indoor utility closet.) We greatly appreciated the fast service, honest advice, and high-quality workmanship of Shanahan's Heating and Cooling. We will definitely continue to use their services in the future.

After getting the recommendation from our neighbors and reading the great reviews on Angies List, We had an estimate from Shanahan's along with three other companies. Their price was competitive and they answered all my questions to excellent satisfaction. We made the decision to go with them and they accomadated us with a great response in fast scheduling amonst their very busy schedule. They completed the job, entire indoor and outdoor installation of a new Trane system, in about four hours. They were very neat taking care not to mess up the house or track dirt. The completed job looks and works great. I look forward to using them for maintenance in the future. I can highly recommend this company.

Shanahan's has performed regular maintenance for us on and off for years and we've been extremely happy with their service. I looked up their Angie's List and Checkbook.org reviews and decided to call them for an estimate to replace both of our HVAC systems. They were the 1st of 4 companies to provide us with a proposal. They were our only quote from a TRANE company and they did provide us with the absolute lowest estimate. That said, I was not comfortable with the estimator's approach. He spent a good chunk of time diagramming the existing system. I explained the problems we were having heating and cooling specific areas and he was very dismissive. Basically saying that, unless we want to replace the ductwork, we would just have to put up with it. When pushed on the issue, he said that the new system might help some but "no guarantees". Well, I didn't expect anyone to guarantee it, I expected a well-thought out proposal to solving the problem. The other 3 companies all submitted proposals addressing the issues. Needless to say, we are not going with Shanahan's proposal and this saddens me as we've always been able to count on them for repair and maintenance. I would still recommend them for that but would hesitate to tell a friend to contact them for a new HVAC system.

It was extremely professional and helpful. Our air conditioning system is very old and we were terribly afraid that it had died completely. It's working great and we couldn't be happier with them. Thank you!

I first called at 8:12 AM because we awoke to find the furnace not working (55 degrees in the house). The woman answering the phone was very sympathetic but did tell me she could not guarnatee what time someone could arrive at the house that day due to a busy schedule; but she did guarantee someone would be out today and would call 30 minutes ahead of time. She wanted me to know that in case I wanted to call another firm. I told her that was fine and thanked her for being truthful. Fifteen minutes later a man called and said he would arrive within 30 minutes, traffic allowing. He showed up on time. He was clean, professional and very pleasant. We took him to the basement and showed the old beauty. After checking everything, taking a couple things apart, he found the problem. He was hesitant to mention the fact that the furnace was old and that we should consider a new one...seems other customers have gotten upset when told their machines are old. We knew that and what we had not told him was that we had already decided on a new HVAC system and knew what we wanted. He was somewhat surprised we were not angry. He told us what it would cost to fix the old furnace and that was when we asked him about a new furnace. He did a temporary fix on the furnace to get the heat back on and he showed my husband what to do if it went out again. He asked if we would like a written proposal for a new furnace and he gave us in writing proposal for just a new furnace and a proposal for getting an all new system. We knew it was better to replace the entire system. We were pleased with the proposal and said we would call the office if we wanted to accept the prosal. He was there approximately 1 1/4 hours and charged $89.00, which would be included in the final cost if we bought through Shanahans. In checking the model numbers online I could not find the models on the proposal sheet, so I called the company. I was told that Curt(Sp?) would call back and we arranged a time that evening. We discussed in detail the units we would be getting...a 95% efficiency versus the 85% efficiency in the proposal. Would there be an extra cost? Turned out to be $410.00. He faxed us a new proposal, we signed it and sent it back. The office called us the next day to arrange installation and we chose the following Wednesday. We were called on Tuesday afternoon with a reminder they would be here at 8 AM, traffic allowing. On Wednesday morning the first of four men arrives at 7:55 AM, introduced themselves to us and we took them to the units. One man stopped at the old air conditioner outsaide on the patio, one began on the old humidifier and the other two went to work on the furnace. Each man had an assignment...no chit chat about who wanted to do what..each knew what his job was and they worked as a fine tuned machine. It was amazing. They were so very pleasant to boot. The the "Boss" arrived...Curt/Kurt...came in and had a good look and talked to us about the new venting we had discussed on the telephone. Together we chose a new place...an old dryer vent not being used. He joined his team and they worked great. They did not take coffee breaks, smoke breaks, chit chats on phones etc. They had completed the job by 12:30 PM. They cleaned up after themselves, left no mess, even outside. They explained the working of the furnace the air conditioner, the humidifier, and the new digital thermostat. And oh, the old metal filters for the air cleaner...they recommended we get rid of them, they are no longer efficient, are dangerous with the metal rods and recommended a new single unit filter. One of the workers was sent to get it and it was also installed, and it was done so at no additional cost. As for the air conditioner, we were told they would return in the spring to double check it is still in working order...it worked that day; but they come back, at no charge , just to make sure. We do not hesitate to recommend Shanahans Heating and Cooling. From the first person in the office on the phone to the workers themselves...Ever, Rocky, Bill and Rob?, not to mention Kurt/Curt. They were professionals working as a TEAM! It was a most welcome and enjoyable sight to see. We will also let TRANE know that they represented their company in an excellent manner. We wanted TRANE...they did not try to talk us into those products. That was our decision! We would not hesitate to use them again. Dave and Paula McKinley Fairfax, Virginia
Description of Work: We replaced our 20 yr. old furnace, air conditioner and humidifier. We upgraded to a 95% efficient TRANE. We also replaced the old filters for the Air Cleaner.

Kirk Shanahan came out with a HVAC SWAT team of three trucks and ten technicians. They had the complete job done and cleaned up in 5 1/2 hours! As always they were friendly and professional. ( My Golden Retriever misses them immensely). I had originally looked at getting my whole-house humidifier replaced as well, but they inspected it and said with a little minor servicing (which they did gratis) it would be fine.I cannot praise this family-owned business highly enough. They are, above all, honest. I won't use anyone else for my HVAC needs, and I recommend them highly.
Description of Work: Fantastic Service! I've used them before, and was very pleased. I bid out to three companies a request for price for replacement of two furnaces, two air-conditioners, two control pads, an air cleaner, and a UV light filter, plus a 75 gallon hot water heater replacement. Shanahan's came in $3000.00 less than the next lowest bidder. (If they had been a few hundred higher I still would have gone with them based on my previous experience with them.)

After replacing some rusted out ducting, our gas furnace would not turn on. However, I can't say that was the cause. We decided to join Angies List in order to make sure we were getting a top quality company. Am so glad we did. Although I planed to call "Company X" (from TV adverts), I discovered they had a B rating and customer comments that had me feeling quite uneasy. I saw Shanahan's name listed in one person's comments for "Company X". They chose Shanahan's. After reviewing Shanahan's rating (and many others), I decided I would call them. Allen arrived promptly on Oct 10 and while we watched, he thoroughly checked the system. The problem was one component not working with the possibiity that another component wasn't working. If he replaced the first one (approx $500), and the furnace didn't come on, he would need to replace the second component (approx $700). Allen was able to ascertain that the first component was not working, but wouldn't know about the second component until the first component was replaced. Because the furnace was 30+ years old, we decided it was best to replace it. The new gas furnace is more energy efficient and much safer, too. Dustin, Thomas and Sergio came back on Oct 19 to replace the furnace. They are a great team - hard workers, good sense of humor, polite! (thank you, please, yes ma'am, no ma'm, etc.) AND, they put up with me watching and asking questions. They put down a tarp to protect the carpeting in the family room and cleaned up as they worked. They also put a filter in the housing and they replaced the very old gas shut-off valve with one that was up to code. And in addition, at my request, Thomas removed an old non-functioning humidifier. The only problem was a misunderstanding, on my part, about a new thermostat. However, they decided to call Kirk, the owner, who quickly resolved the problem in a very satisfactory manner. Before leaving, Thomas instructed me on how to use the thermostat and encouraged me to be sure to go on line or mail in the warranty information. He also counseled me on maintenance with the new furnace, AND the newer, existing a/c unit we have. Would I hire them again? You bet, in a heart beat!!! After having hired some unsatisfactory companies, Shanahan's Heating and Cooling has restored my faith in knowing that great companys still exist today. THANK YOU, Shanahan's for a job well done! (In initial talks w/ my huband, about replacing the gas furnace, he was satisfied with the price and felt it was reasonable. Thus I gave Shanahan's an A for price because we were satisfied and especially because I didn't think it would be fair to give them a lesser grade because I didn't want to compare prices.) I absolutely HATE having to call companies for work, because of prior bad luck with several companies. I am so glad we joined Angies List. It has made all the difference in restoring my faith in being able to find a great company . We will need more work done to our house in the coming months/years, so I look forward to using Angies List to find other great companies. Thank you Angie, for providing this invaluable service.

About 2:30 PM on Friday afternoon noticed that heat pump was no longer working. Called Shanahan's (highly rated by both Angie's List and Checkbook) and was told service request was being sent to dispatcher and to expect telephone call. About 1.5 hours later got call asking if I had been called by service technician since Shanahan's quality control had detected a discrepancy between service requests (mine) and dispatches. Their QC system for me was sign of a professionally run outfit. How refreshing! Was then told that a service tech would definitely be sent. Tech called within 1/2 hour and showed up 20 minutes later. Being interested I watched him closely as he quickly identified and replaced the burned out transformer, and then tracked down and repaired the cause of the burn-out. He then did a quick check of the overall system. This knowlegeable tech clearly understood what he was dealing with. I was very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. I had no idea what I would be charged for the repair and was completely surprised by the modest amount charged. Should I need heating/AC services in the future I will absolutely use Shanahan's, and I would unequivocally recommend Shanahan's to others.

The crew from Shanahan's came in on time and since it was raining that day quickly placed mats on the ground to protect the floor from the traffic of taking out the old heating/air conditioning system and placing a new one in it's place. The crew was very professional and answered all the questions I had. They gave me suggestions for maintaning the new system. I was very pleased with the work and the new system. I had several estimates on the job and Shanahan not only gave me the best price but a 2 year labor warrenty rather than the standard 1 year labor warrenty that the other company's offered. That plus the price was the key in my decision to go with Shanahan and it appears to have been the correct choice as I am fully satisfied with my new HV/AC unit. The unit is a Trane and it operates very quietly and I hope to see an improvement in my heating gas bill this winter
Description of Work: Make sure you get several quotes from different vendors and get a detail price estimate on the unit you are considering. This will make sure that you get what you paid for in the end.

It was great! My husband and I returned from vacation to find our air conditioning had died, so we had several companies inspect it. Virtually all of the companies suggested replacing the entire system for $7000 to $8000 except Shanahan's. The Shanahan's technician came to my home and asked to see the air conditioner. I informed him that the unit was dead and needed to be replaced just as all the other companies had advised. He insisted on inspecting the unit, so I directed him to its location. Approximately 10 minutes later, the gentleman returned and told me to close my windows. I was shocked to learn that he had completely fixed the unit, and that the unit had died due to another company's mistake. Needless to say, I will be using Shanahan's for any future HVAC needs.
Description of Work: They repaired my air conditioning.

Shanahan's stood by their work! Very professional with their customer service! Technician came out on a Tuesday and replaced the fan motor and capacitor. On Thursday the fan blades shattered. Shanahan's sent out another Technician that evening and he said that the fans blade assembly needed to be replaced and so did the fan motor. He told me that I would have to pay for the new fan blades and another motor as well as the service call. I called the office and they were very cordial and said they would look into it. Kirk, the owner called me back personally and told me they would replace both the fan blade assembly and fan motor for no additional charge. Will use them again
