+ 3 moreDescription of Work: On behalf of Metro Home, Carlos agreed to personally: | |"complete the Big Deal already purchased (forced into this $399 for a full day's handyman service by Angie's List personnel who refused to return payment for a different, nonscheduling contractor): clean out the drains in sinks and showers (I buy drain cleaner to use afterward), replace kitchen sink faucet and do whatever else to make it leak-free (I buy the new faucet), change dining room light fixture back to its original (I have the old unit), weld together the front rail that separated, spray paint all rails and touch-up paint on new vent covers (I have the paint)." | |For an additional $375, he agreed to have his workers "Re-paint kitchen (I buy semi-gloss that has primer already included): painting all surfaces now painted yellow, including ceiling; not painting wood-grain surfaces." | |Work done by Carlos was acceptable, and he was personable. However, work done by his employee was far below basic acceptable job of painting and caused us collateral damage. There was no taping or dropcloth coverage of possessions, so drips and swipes of paint landed everywhere. Parts of the walls were missed, with just rollering in the centers. Despite being cautioned to clean first, worker applied paint directly to a small area by the stove that had some grease spatters. A bit of grocery bag caught in a door was painted over, and two doors were painted shut. Our new refrigerator was pulled out and then slammed against the wall, collapsing part of the back unit. The paint job was truly awful, and the two men worked about 4 hours, with Carlos on the phone to others much of the time. They then asked for the $375 additional pay. That's not the worst. | |After they left, a member of the household discovered that the upstairs refrigerator was dead and all frozen food was thawing. We'd later learn that both upstairs and downstairs refrigerators were off, as all plugs on one electrical line were dead. Believing the moving of the fridge had caused the situation, we contacted Carlos and asked him to return to correct the problem, as it was an emergency. | |He refused and denied all responsibility. We had to call someone to handle the electric problem, which turned out to be a different kind of damage: when Carlos' employee was snaking the drains downstairs, he hit or pushed the GFCI, and when it went out all units behind it on the line went out...thus no usable plugs and no refrigerators making cold to keep foods safe. | |We asked Carlos to clean up the worker's mess and pay for the electrical; he cleaned up a bit, but tried to argue that it was I who caused the electrical problem (I had not been running anything on that electrical line or any other; I had been sitting in the living room with bones broken in both legs, unable to climb between floors of the house). When he came back to clean up a bit, it was at his convenience, not ours...I had just returned from physical therapy and was in great pain, worse pain if I had to climb stairs, so his forcing his way in was a personal cruelty. Then he was ugly about the $159 electric service that saved food. | |There are many great contractors on Angie's List; using this tool, we've found lots of good folks, but Metro Home is not one of them. Integrity and professionalism matter, so I will not buy another Angie's Big Deal, and I will not use this firm again. |
