AJ is very responsive, kept in touch very well, and was very professional in his approach. Work was excellent, you can see the little details that a run of the mill builder would not do. Very recommended.

When initially contacted was not available for several weeks but when he did make an appointment he kept it and provided first class estimated and completion.

Recently had a lot of home repairs done due to water damage in my basement because of a snow storm. Was told the water damage was due to the lack of flashing on my deck. Contacted AJ to install the flashing. He also recommended replacing the bolts connecting the deck to my house, which turned out to be a good idea since they were extremely rusted. He was the only one that suggested the bolts as a potential problem. His estimate was a lot less than I expected to pay for this work. This was one of the most positive experiences I had with any of the contractors that did work on my house or provided estimates.

AJ was on time, professional and he and his helper did excellent work! Took him most of the day to complete the job and they cleaned up everything except for some sawdust. When it was complete, i inspected the deck and it was d*** near perfect - the few things i found, he quickly fixed. Very pleased with his work.

Mr. Shadid was very prompt and professional from start to finish. He worked with me and was able to salvage some of the work that had been botched by a previous contractor. He told me exactly what he would do and was onsite with his work team (2 or 3 people) throughout the project. He obtained the necessary county permits and kept me informed with periodic updates. He and his team did quality work and their attention to detail in making the angled cuts that were necessary was outstanding. We made a few adjustments along the way but he went out of his way to ensure my satisfaction. In fact, he would not accept any payment from me until he was finished AND we were completely satisfied. Overall this was a great experience that restored my confidence in small business contractors.

Of three contractors I called one day, AJ is the only one who answered the phone rather than my call going to an answering machine/service. He scheduled a prompt visit to provide an estimate. He arrived promptly and provided a lot of information about the work to be performed. He was thorough and quite knowledgeable. I immediately decided to hire him. Unfortunately, by the time I received the HOA approval, AJ was going on vacation and would not be available for five weeks. I decided to hire another contractor and found out how good of a price AJ had quoted. Although I am happy with the contractor I hired, I would definitely recommend Decks and Fences before any other contractor. I was disappointed that they were not able to do the work.

Based on recommendations from this list, we hired Mr. Shadid to build several gates, make repairs, and extend our fence. Not only did he offer the best price, but the workmanship was superb. He was pleasant, professional, and prompt throughout the process. We would definitely hire Mr. Shadid again!

The crew from Decks & Fences were fantastic. They were great in everything. I recommend them. They did a lot of hard work for me and they did it well.

AJ's work is very high quality and I have received many compliments from others on the the results and the attention to detail on his work. AJ handled everything from the plans for the HOA to the county permits and inspections. He is very prompt and courteous, his work team were all very professional and kept everything neat during the job. AJ works on the jobs along with his team so you know it is being done to his high standards. Overall, he is one of the best contractors I have worked with.

I like that they had several people working with them so it went very quickly. Probably within a week it was done. They cleaned up very well. They were very professional in both the design of the new deck and in the workmanship. They stayed with their original estimate. We have recommended them to our neighbors and now our neighbors on both sides are talking with them.

I got AJ's name from Angie's List which recommended him very highly. I called him. He called right back. We made an appointment which he kept promptly. Before he left I had a sketch, sample material and preliminary price. Within 2 days I had a contract. Within 2 weeks of signing the contract, my backyard was complete. AJ took great pride in his work and, if that meant doing something extra like burying a drain pipe, he did it. AJ and his two assistants were terrific...always smiling and pleasant...always leaving their work area neat. I was very impressed with them. In fact, I recommended him to a friend and he is now doing her backyard.

AJ recently completed our new deck. After a challenging experience renovating our new townhome over the last 6 months we had experienced numerous delays and issues with the non-deck related items (deck was last planned item) and heard about Angie's List. We decided to try our luck to see if we could do any better than we had with the other projects. We found AJ and one of his competitors as highly rated local contractors (we live in Bethesda MD) and interviewed them both. Both were good, but AJ inspired high confidence and also came in with a lower bid. He was extremely consultative, and advised us on all of our options with an eye on cost, waste, maintenance, etc. We awarded him the business, and he stepped us through the entire process (design, permit, etc) and completed the job in 2 1/2 days in the rain, to our complete satisfaction. I would recommend him to friends, family and anyone else at a moment's notice; the best contractor experience we've ever had.

We found AJ Shadid on Angie's list and thought his ratings were almost too good to be true but decided to try him anyway. I called AJ and he immediately offered to come see the job site and give me an estimate. We met the next day and he penciled out a design and gave me an estimate on the spot. His price was considerably below what two other contractors had proposed. The estimate was exactly the same as the final price even though we ended up putting off the work for a few months while we dithered about whether or not to the add the deck. Once we finally made up our minds, I gave AJ a call and he told me exactly what he needed from me to get started, what steps he would take and how long the process would take. All of his planning worked perfectly and we had our new deck approved by the Reston Association and Fairfax County, built, inspected and ready to use in about three weeks. AJ worked along side his crew on the actual building of the deck, giving me confidence that everything was being done correctly and to AJ's high quality standards. In short, the smoothest and most satisfying home-improvement project I have ever had. I would highly, very highly recommend AJ Shadid to anyone. P.S. Before we actually signed the contract I asked AJ for some references and he immediately e-mailed me four names and numbers of recent clients. I called them all and heard nothing but glowing reports. He turned out to be just as good as all the reports said!

The owner of the company, Mr. Shadid, provided a very detailed estimate of the project, along with an excellent diagram/blueprint of the proposed deck. He was very open to proposed additions/revisions and suggested several options for consideration. He was personally involved in the design, estimate, supervision and construction of the deck. He was very cooperative and accessible; obtained all necessary construction permits and county inspections, began the work on time and completed the work quickly -- all within the estimated total cost. Moreover, his crew was very efficient and professional, working hard and cleaning up the area each day. I could not ask for a better, professional experience. The owner was a pleasure to work with and seemed to enjoy designing/building a quality product.

Mr. Shadid returned our initial phone call immediately, came when he said he was coming for an estimate, answered all our questions and suggested several solutions for our site, promptly sent us an estimate for and description of the proposed work, and followed through on everything he said he was going to do. He walked us through the permit process and was always on top of the project. The gentlemen who came with him to build the deck were courteous and professional, and the deck itself is exactly what we wanted and is the perfect solution for the site.

Tremendous. He allowed us to remove the old deck to save money, designed a better deck than the one we had, did really careful and skillful work, and was extremely prompt and fast and considerate.

Excellent experience. AJ came out the same day to meet with us on the same day I called him -- a Sunday. He was extremely professional, articulate, thoughtful, thorough and courteous. Really a pleasant person to meet. He provided us with very useful suggestions and advice. He sent a written estimate within a few days. His estimate was very reasonable and appropriate. The only reason that we did not contract with him to perform the work was that another company was able to perform more services for us - we renovated our entire backyard and needed a retaining wall, driveway, patio, walkways, and tree removal. Because all of the components of the renovation were interrelated, it was far simpler, and less expensive overall, to use one company rather than manage two or three. I was disappointed that I couldn't hire AJ to do the job, however, because I am confident that the quality of his work would have been outstanding and that it would have been a pleasure to work with him. As it was, I did incorporate a few of his suggestions about the project and certain other projects that needed to be done around my home.

Excellent job. AJ and his crew were punctual, expert, and professional. Job was done on time and on budget (even with a slight rain delay). The result is fantastic. We now have a new deck, which is the backyard centerpiece, next to the newly renovated pool.

AJ was easy to reach and came by that evening to discuss the project. He was knowledgeable, professional, and personable. We liked AJ immediately. He worked with us on a custom design for our gate and balcony, provided good input, and understood our design concept. He came up with a structurally sound solution for enlarging the width of the balcony without compromising the overall design. He and his crew were prompt, flexible, and worked closely with us during the project to ensure it was done to our specifications. He went above and beyond by fixing part of an existing fence at no cost to us. We were very pleased with the results and would highly recommend AJ for decking and fencing.

He was very thorough and friendly. He did a great job on the deck. He was very professional and I felt like the price was reasonable. He got us scheduled and contacted all of the right people.

They were very responsive and prompt. They responded to my initial email quickly, came out for the estimate on time, gave a fair price, showed up on time to the minute, and did a very nice job. The new railing looks great as do the privacy screens. AJ answered my questions quickly and completely. They also cleaned up afterwards very well. I think I found a grand total on one lug nut left behind. I contacted three contractors for this job. AJ's price was the middle one but he answered emails right away and could do the work quickest. I would recommend this company to anybody that asked.

Exceptional. AJ was responsive, professional, and timely. He provided in depth quotes for various scenarios and did not push any particular approach, but provided pros and cons of all. He managed to slip me in earlier and he and his crew did a great job and cleaned up nicely.
