I needed to replace a large retaining wall which was protecting an outside stairway to my basement. The existing wall had gotten to the point where the wall was in danger of imminent collapse. Jeff Dame of J&D Masonry promptly returned my call for an estimate, showed up on time, and scheduled the work to be done promptly. I was very pleased with his workmanship and professionalism. He kept me well informed of each step in the process and promptly returned my phone calls, if I had a question. Although we did not discuss some of the construction details in advance, the wall he built was first rate---cinder block, poured concrete, rebar reinforcement. He also made several aesthetic upgrades to the wall he replaced. He even placed stucco on another wall that he did not replace, so it would match perfectly. When he was finished, the worksite was cleaned up to the point that it looked like he had never been there. Throughout the entire process he was pleasant to talk with and unhurried. His pricing was very reasonable and well below another estimate I had gotten. I do not think anyone else could have accomplished a better end result. If you had a review higher than A, then J&D Masonry should get an A+++. Jeff has amazing craft skills and he and his team are the definition of the word professional. In a day where many settle for "good enough" Jeff only settles for doing the job right the first time. They were always here on time, always cleaned up after a work day and their work is impeccable. Once the work was completed, a number of neighbors and just people passing down the street stopped to ask who built the wall and get contact information. If you need any sort of masonry work done I highly recommend J&D Masonry. .

Jeff did a great job and is a great mason. Jeff was responsive to my inquiries and was easy to work with. I am very pleased with the end result and have received several compliments from my neighbors already.

We've dealt with Jeff twice. Last fall (2015) he came by to give an estimate and offer advice on a chimney that was in need of repair. We ended up going a route where we didn't need his services but were very satisfied with the interaction. This spring we had Jeff put a concrete block retaining wall in the cellar of our house. The cellar had been dug out after the original construction of house and the original wall was in need of additional support ( after 65 plus years). He also capped a second house chimney that use to provide for the kitchen and filled a previously installed concrete block retaining wall in the cellar. We have been very satisfied with the work Jeff has done, would use him again if needed and would recommend his services to others that have need of masonry work.

A little forgetful after speaking with him a few times regarding the job. Once we got in contact, came to the house quickly and removed the brick without any damage to the surrounding areas while I was gone on vacation. No complaints with the work done.

Jeff - please either perform the work or return my property and I'll get someone else to repair my steps!

Jeff Dane was responsive by telephone. Weather (rain) was a great hindrance in his scheduling an inspection of the possible chimney cap problem. He also welcomed the pictures I e-mailed of the problem. He actually had another contractor measure for the job and send additional pictures. Jeff's inspection showed that the chimney cap was not the problem and he refused to have me spend $1,500 for a job not needed. He was professional in every respect and recommended someone to complete the roof flashing drainage problem. I will call him when needing additional stonework done on the property.

I called Jeff based on recommedations on Angie's List. He called back right away and came the very next morning to address our problem. He was on time and knowledgeable. I would use him again in the future.

Jeff and his crew finished a stone retaining wall for us. Another contractor had started the wall and disappeared, never to be heard from again. Jeff came in and was able to match the previous work that had been done so our wall looks uniform. He was quick to return our calls, showed up when he said he would, finished the job when promised and came in on budget. He was very easy to work with. I would recommend him to anyone.

Jeff Dame was reasonably responsive and quick to get the work done. I feel like I paid a little more than average for the service performed. Date of service: 8/24/12. When I inspected the mortar work, I noticed a nickel was embedded in the concrete. I asked Jeff about this and he said it was his "calling-card". Personally, I found it kind of tacky and unprofessional. But the top of the chimney isn't readily visible so I didn't dwell on it. As the concrete settled in the first week, a large crack appeared. Concerned that this could translate into water damage, I reached out to Jeff and asked if he would touch-up the mortar. He said that he would perform the touch-up; however, a couple of weeks passed. I followed up on 9/20/12 and received excuses. I followed up again on 11/15/12 and Jeff did finally come out to address the crack. Despite the necessary follow-up work, I would have been satisfied with my experience. But that wasn't the end of the story. A couple years later, I was cutting back over-grown forsythia bushes, trying to reclaim some yard space. That's when I discovered a mound of concrete piled up between the bushes. I've lived in my house for a long time. The concrete wasn't there when the forsythia bushes were planted more than 20 years earlier. Some of the concrete pieces still had chunks of brick attached. And the pieces were large enough that I could fit a few together and determine, with confidence, that the concrete represented the original mortar on the chimney. If Jeff had needed me (the customer) to dispose of the old concrete, I could-have and would-have done so. Not only did Jeff not handle the disposal of the old material (like the average contractor would), he dumped the concrete in an obscure location on my property, hiding it from me. For the record, I took pictures of this pile of concrete I discovered and would happily upload them to the site if I could. This guy knows his trade. But I encourage you to watch out for the corners he might cut.

We were a little taken aback by the cost of the project but he came back and painted everything and it looks really good. He was busy and was great about getting to the job as soon as he could. We really appreciate that he was easy to get a hold of and made sure we were happy with the finished job.

My front yard was a disaster from replacing a sewer line. There were large rocks and tree roots on the lawn. Most of my sidewalk had to be replaced. Dirt or mud was everywhere. There was a hole near the porch steps left by the plumber.The ground had settled even more when the City of Roanoke had to come and do the outside of the yard. My gate would not open. My mailbox was laying on top of the fence. Some of the dirt was piled against a tree. Billy and his helper, Gary, of Ramey's Masonry came and started on the yard the following day. They spread the dirt evenly over the yard, filled in some places where the ground had settled leaving holes and filled in one hole left by the plumber near the porch. They cleaned up the rocks and roots all around the area and some pieces of cement that was left as well. They seeded the yard and placed hay over it afterwards. They said they could have finished the first day but could not get the cement delivered. The day the cement was delivered, they were here waiting on the truck. They did an excellent job as well as the clean up afterwards. The sidewalk is beautiful, even better than I expected. They were prompt and professional and took care with everything they did. I highly recommend Ramey's Masonry and have a couple more jobs lined up with them.

I called another chimney company in the area - twice - last week. Both times they said that they would get back with me, but never did. I called Jeff on Friday, and he said he would come out and meet with us on Sunday (today) which was a pleasant surprise that he was willing to come out on a weekend, a Sunday especially. We had a couple of questions concerning our chimney and inquired if any work needed to be done on it. He was incredibly courteous and knowledgeable. He gave us insight into the issues we were having and suggested some work for us to do with it in the future. This guy was completely professional and has earned our business in the future because he was willing to come to us with our relatively small needs on a Sunday of all days! We asked Jeff to remodel and widen a brick outside porch staircase .He gave us an estimate on the work (not knowing what was under the loose masonry the last remodeller left) We wanted the staircase to be remodelled, but also to be widened to the full width of the existing porch in keeping with the look of the period. He gave us some options on how best to set out the patterns to compliment the porch, and also to raise the level of the porch to match the height of the doorstep. He started when he said he would, and he and all his associates were very helpful and courteous. There were a few days when the weather was not co operating, but when they could they worked. For some reason the dryer vent outlet was put in the side of the staircase at a 45 degree angle and the pipe joining it had disintergrated. Jeff re drilled the hole in the cellar wall and put a straight outlet on ,which will allow us to clean the dryer vent with no problem. He kept us in the loop at every stage and all the work he performed was all within the original estimate. He did an excellent job, and the porch looks great.

Everything went exactly as planned the work was excellent I would use this co. again!

i was extremely disappointed with the brickwork completed by a mason i had previously hired. i called jeff and he removed the shoddy work and reinstalled new brick on both of my front stoops. jeff provided me with quality workmanship. he was professional, friendly and very detail oriented. he will make sure you are 100%satisfied. he takes pride in his work and it shows.

Jeff came to look at the job and provided an estimate on the same day that I first made contact with him. He spent time listening to what our goals were and made excellent suggestions for our project. What really sold me was even though pouring a concrete patio would have meant more work for him, he advised against it due to settling of fill dirt. Once we decided to use J & D, Jedf explained it would be 3-4 weeks before he could get to us. Rain caused a delay in the projected start time which we understood to be out of his control. Once he began, he worked consistently until the wall could be completed. He and his employees worked hard, stayed on task and were very polite and considerate. We now have a very sturdy, nicely finished block retaining wall. We plan to use J & D for another project in the future. We were very pleased with our experience. Our final cost was at the lower end of the estimate we were given.

.Very professional. Work was high quality. He explained what he was doing, gave options and recommendations when asked. Cleaned up at the end of each day's work and at the end of the job. When part of the job (repairing steps on a back patio) turned out to be more work than originally thought, he offered to do the work at cost. Very responsive when called.

Prompt. Professional. Friendly. Down to earth. I was out of town when the work was completed but he refused payment until I was able to get back and see the work first hand. He takes pride in his work as he should.

Jeff gave me an estimate to repair chimney that had lost the cap and several bricks during one of the summer storms. We set a date to do the work Jeff and his crew arrived promptly and proceeded to set up scaffolding and to repair the chimney. I now no longer have water seeping into the basement due to the chimney. He was great to work with and have called him again to do another project. I would recommend Jeff and his crew.

I called requesting a chimney inspection. My phone call was returned the same day. He said he could drive by that same day because he was in town and look at the outside at least (our schedules did not match for him to come inside the house). He called me that night to tell me there was already a cap (masonry not cement) and that the chimney had been recently repaired already. He said the masonry will eventually crack, and to call him when it does, but that based on the outside he does not need to do anything at the moment. I believe he gave me his honest opinion, and I will be happy to call him in the future when I do need work done.

Although it took a while from the first contact with Mr. Dame to the commencement of the work (due to weather issues and other projects and commitments), I was impressed with Mr. Dame's experience and expertise, and felt he would do a good job. I was very pleased with the result as well as the efficiency and professionalism of Mr. Dame and his team. Mr. Dame takes pride in his work and didn't rush through my job just so he could get to the next project. He went the extra mile to see that the work was performed to my satisfaction and even took the time to make suggestions to improve the appearance of the retaining wall --using concrete blocks on the top row which could be used as a planter and also later on staining the wall a different color. He's very personable and easy to work with. Mr. Dame and his team cleaned up when they were finished and left the work area in good shape! I certainly would recommend J and D Masonry without hesitation.

The ramp I desired required some creativity, and Jeff did a very good job of designing and construction. I will definitely call upon him for such work in the future. "Monday" did not always mean "Monday," but getting the job done right is paramount, and Jeff got the job done right.
