I called Mack Morris when my heat went out. They came out same day and replaced some fuses, but told me if it went out again I would need a disconnect replacement. I was happy with this. I felt they tried to fix the problem in the least expensive way, which was good for me. However, it did go out again. Since it happened on the weekend, the tech made a temporary repair without charge. I did have them come out the following week for the disconnect replacement. Things are working great now. I also had them come out and replace part of the return duct, which had been previously damaged. After coming out to assess the problem they called me with prices and options. I felt they were very upfront about my options and I am satisfied with the service and repairs. Thanks!!!

I had my first contact with Mack Morris during the Home Show in Charlottesville. From the first contact, to the last, I have no complaints. Responses were quick, the pricing competitive, the service courteous. Ben was great in explaining the equipment and sold me from the first visit. I did however check with another local company and came back to Mack Morris, for pricing and service. Installation went smoothly, but I did have an event a couple of days later that caused the unit to fail to operate. I had someone here a couple of hours later at 8:30 on a Friday night for what turned out to be an easy fix. Would recommend Mack Morris to anyone based on this experience.

I called the company to schedule a winter servicing. I was offered, for $219.00, service on the furnace now, service on air-conditioning next year, service on furnace again next year, and priority service agreement. The pricing was very good. The technician was thorough and professional. He found a switch turned off that was preventing the furnace from coming on and he fixed that small problem and performed the rest of the servicing without a hitch. I recommend this company without any reservations.

I worked with Jim throughout the entire process who was highly professional, prompt and thorough. Everyone including the installers were punctual and polite. Jim came back with many options to choose from and explained rebates that I didn't know existed. Helped me obtain those rebates and answered all my questions which saved about $900. My phone call to them was handled promptly and courteously. A visit was scheduled for the same day, and a technician would call about 20 minutes before arrival. The technician called and arrived as expected. He was friendly and gregarious. He accurately diagnosed the problem and replaced the thermocouple, and explained what he was doing as he did so. All was well until he went to the vehicle to prepare the invoice. It took quite a while to do so and when he came back in with it, it didn't make much sense. I figured an $80 "trip charge" is intended to cover having to go a long way, and fuel prices, and homeowners that aren't there to meet the professional, etc. But I figured it would cover 10-15 minutes of labor. But no, instead labor was "included" in the price of the part. But the part was priced more than $100 more than the part could be found at Amazon. So, all-in-all, a fine service performance marred only by a feeling of enigmatic and hefty pricing.
Description of Work: Trying to start our gas furnace for the first time, the pilot light wouldn't stay lit. A repair person from Mack Morris came out and replaced the thermocouple.

The sales representative was straightforward and easy to deal with, and also helped us obtain a state energy credit after the job was completed. The installation crew was first-rate and very professsional. The job took approximately 8 business days. The company provided two service check-ups free of charge for the first year following installation. All in all, we would highly recommend Mack Morris for this kind of work.
Description of Work: The company replaced an old propane furnace with a new American Standard heat pump unit and condenser, new ductwork under the house, and and new thermostats. The job involved extensive work in a narrow crawl space under our 75-year old house.

Update, 5/20/13: This update is a bit overdue, but we are now satisfied with our system and I've upgraded our overall experience from a B to an A. After seeing my review, Mack Morris himself contacted me and wanted to get it right. It involved moving the inside unit so that it wasn't directly beneath the return, angling the flow to reduce noise, and making a few other minor changes. The roaring sound went away for the most part, and then after another tweak, it was gone. They also adjusted a setting that, by default, would have the unit kick in repeatedly over a short time period every morning by 6:30 am, to gauge what it would need to do to properly maintain the temperature. As it had been in place for six months, we all agreed the system had figured that out by then, and they turned that off. Replacing the compressor (see below) seemed to undo it, so they had to adjust it again. When the temperatures dropped and it got really cold this past winter, the compressor on the outside unit began making a whumping noise when it turned off. It was cycling on and off a lot, and it was disturbing my sleep. After consulting with American Standard, Mack Morris replaced the compressor. The whumping stopped, but it still was loud when it came on. Our bedroom window is 3 stories up, and is right above the unit. The house next to us is fairly close on that side, so it sent the sound straight up to the window. We ended up ordering a compressor cover, which took care of that problem (on a rare occasion, I'll hear it). So it took about six months of us and Mack Morris and company coordinating and tweaking, but we finally got it quiet. Our initial cost savings don't seem to have stuck, though, and we're not sure why our electric bills are still as high as they are. It's possible the heating system didn't have as much impact as we thought. But we're finally happy with the system. If your set-up is challenging like ours, and you're sensitive to noise, ask about these issues before the installation. Original Review: We hired Mack Morris to replace our HVAC system, based on recommendations from neighbors and reviews on Angie's List. We had three HVAC companies quote new systems for us (we were replacing the furnace and the outdoor AC unit and getting a new thermostat). We were leaning toward the Trane system with Robertson Electric until we discovered that the American Standard system from Mack Morris was identical and thousands less than the trane (both systems are made by the same company). The crew chief and sales rep came out before the installation to measure and inspect the location for set-up. They recommended moving the unit to the other side of the framing in our unfinished basement, both for space issues and so they could straighten out the vent to improve airflow. We chose to go this route. In the process, the crew chief informed me that the 5-inch media filter the rep had quoted us would be insufficient for a 5-ton unit (two would be required), so the sales rep instead suggested the UV filter to help clean the air. He said while it does cost more, he'd throw it in for the same price. I appreciated that and agreed to the change. Installation was originally scheduled for a day when temps were expected to reach 100, but they were fine with delaying it to the following week, on a day it miraculously was cool enough for the windows to be open. The crew worked quickly, although I finally had to ask them to stop slamming the basement door every time they went in and out.Once the system was up and running, they showed me how to use the thermostat, which is very easy to use. I immediately noticed how incredibly noisy the system was and was decidedly unhappy about it. Especially when it's cranked up, the roar could be heard across the house, and it would kill conversation in the dining room, where the main return is located. The sales rep arrived right at that time and made some suggestions, and he had the crew chief return in a day or so to see what could be done. They replaced the return grate so that it had bigger vents to let the air flow more easily, but it didn't do much. Other solutions weren't workable, so he adjusted the variable fan speed to put it as low as possible. Minor improvement. Since it's really only that low if the temp is turned down much lower than we'd use it, we let it be. When we open the basement door, and the air handler is working, it often sounds like water rushing through a pipe. If we ever finish the basement, we will have to do extra insulation and sound-proofing around the utility area. I understand this is common with variable speed units. We have discovered with this new system, with the variable air speed in the air handler, that we are having to keep the temperature set 2 degrees lower than before, and at night, 1 degree lower than that. We have the fan on at all times, but I personally feel the air doesn't flow that well. If you're right under a vent, you certainly feel it. When they came back out to install the UV filter, which had to be ordered, we had them show us how to adjust the fan speed ourselves, and we turned it back up. They just came back out today, three weeks after installation, to put the fiberglass insulation back up in the ceiling around the new unit. I hadn't noticed they had taken it down but not replaced it during the installation, and the LEAP inspector (you get a $450 rebate through a special county program) who came out spotted it and said they should have put it back up. They hadn't kept any insulation that was taken down, but luckily I had some. We haven't seen our first electric bill since the new system is in place, so I am hoping that a new, much higher efficiency unit will greatly reduce our bill despite our having to keep it 2-3 degrees lower. I will update my review if possible after I do.All in all, I think Mack Morris did a pretty good job, but I am not jumping up and down and singing their praises. If I had it to do over again and Robertson Electric could further drop the price, I'd go with them. We've used them a number of times for other household issues (electrical work, emergency hot water heater replacement) and they are fantastic.

Wesley arrived very quickly on a VERY hot day when our AC upstairs unit had gone out. We called at around 12pm and they were out to fix it by around 3:45pm. Fast and easy fix. Gave us the price they quoted over the phone. Wesley was wonderful! Will definitely use Mack Morris again!

Our heat pump died the evening before. We called Mack Morris Heating & Air Conditioning first thing in the morning after I read all their reports on Angie's List. Even though we were not former customers, they reached our house before noon!!! They found a blown fuse and replaced it. However they wouldn't leave until they checked the system thoroughly to make certain the problem was not caused by an internal problem in our heating system. They also adjusted the outdoor unit so it was not squeaking as the previous contractor had left it. They explained everything about the work they did and educated us about the system in a way no one else had before. They said if any parts had been needed, they would have been ordered before they left our house. That's such a reassurance after our experience with another company (that took five days to order a part during a deep cold spell). We felt extremely well taken care of and they accepted the Angie's List coupon with no problem. I would definitely use this company for ANY HVAC services.

I have an ongoing maintenance contract with them. I would grade them at the top. I trust them. They are professional. They come out and service my equipment. If I need anything, they would come back, but basically if I have them take care of it, I’m confident that I would be okay and so far I have been. They come twice a year and I pay the amount to them in advance. I really don’t remember how much it is. I will use their services again in the future.

I bought an American Standard 19 seer heat pump with steam humidifier from Mack Morris. I liked the salesman (Jim) as he was quite thorough about his work. They had people come out before the job to be sure everything would work right. I did a review of the product and found that American Standard parts are Trane parts. My research seemed to indicate that the most important component of a heat pump system is the quality of the installer, and Mack Morris has a stellar reputation. They installed a system in a neighbor's house four years ago and those people have been very pleased with the service. The heat pump with humidifier was installed on time, and the technician went over everything with me. So far so good as everything works well. For some reason they charged me $200 less than the estimate.

Our A/C unit failed last month, on a 100-degree Friday. I called our usual service company at 3pm and they couldn't send anyone until Monday. Mack Morris, who bought the company that wired our house, sent someone the same day. I was happy to pay the emergency surcharge--well worth it to avoid a stifling weekend without A/C. The technician arrived at around 5, just a couple of hours after my call. We're in northern Albemarle and I was amazed at their responsiveness, given how many calls everyone was getting that day. He diagnosed and fixed the problem quickly, and we had a cool and comfortable weekend, and the system is humming along just fine. I will definitely call them again.

On the weekendI submitted an email on the Mack Morris web site for a request for service on the weekend to fix my central air conditioner. Received reply on Monday morning early and visit was scheduled. I met the repair person at home and within 10 minutes he determined that I had a bad capacitor. He had the part on his truck and replaced. Next, he did a complete diagnostic on the system. He explained each step that he took and provided information in an understandable form. He determined that the refrigerant was slightly overfilled and he adjusted the level. This was a great repair experience. I feel that the price was fair and he honored a $25.00 coupon that I got on Angie's List and that paid for the annual subscription to Angie's list with money left over as savings. He ended by saying that he had just performed the summer preventive maintenance service call as well as the specific repair.

Excellent response time and excellent service. It was costly but it was service on the weekend so we expected to pay more.
Description of Work: When our air conditioning unit was not cooling on one of the hottest days of the year (on a weekend day) we called Mack Morris. We received a call from the service technician quickly and he was here promptly. He quickly diagnosed the problem, replaced the defective part, and we had cool air. I intend to use Mack Morris Heating & Air for any service we need in the future. We have had some companies that will not service on the weekend even when we had a service contract. They were quick to arrive and to give an estimate. Once the job was accepted they arrived within a few days and in approximately 5 hours a new unit inside and out was installed.The sales person worked with me and found a lender (Wells Fargo Bank) who would loan money for 3 years with no interest.I have used them through the years since I have moved to this area (1998) and they have always provided great service and have always been prompt.
