Description of Work: I called my Home warranty company when my AC went out Aug. 22nd, on Aug 24th Duvall showed up and said I needed a new fan blade and would be back to Replace it with in 3-5 days at most. Well today is Sept. 4th, still not repaired so I called this morning to see when it will be repaired since it has been 13 days and she said " we are on the phone with the vendor and will all you back . No I haven't heard back from them yet. Funny thing is I called my home warranty company to complain friday and she placed me on hold and said the part was due to arrive today but according to Duvall it's not even been shipped . It's just a fan blade ,not a hard part to find. No checking in with me letting me know the status, nothing . No I will not use them again and will have that noted on my home warranty contract

7/19/11: They arrived and the unit was a little frozen - an obvious sign of a low charge. On this blistering hot day it was 97 degrees outside and It was 130 deg in the garage. From the time the employee got to my house and I arrived, we missed by five minutes. In that time the "frozen" AC was 100% thawed (assuming it was actually frozen). The very young mechanic left a bill for $100 - my cost share with my 2-10 home warranty, grabbed the $100 check, and departed. My female colleague was at the house and said that the male employee was 'looking her over' and not focused on work. On this day, there was an 8 mile back up in the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel back to Newport News the company's home base. I called the company office and asked the phone attendant to send mechanic back (surely he was only a few minutes from my house) and she absolutely refused saying that he was gone until tomorrow between 8 am and 1 pm.. I explained there is was an 8 mile back up in tunnel back to New Port News and to please just have him turn around and come back and do the work. They refused and wanted a re-schedule. It was even unclear whether they would charge me another $100 and also bill my home warranty again. Therefore, given the negative person on the phone, I asked for the manager and was put on hold. The person who answered for manager sounded like the same woman as before! She was very rude, obtuse, and offered to come back the next day between hours of 8AM and 1 PM. In essence, they made my hit on my female housemate, grabbed $100, and departed - a five minute visit. Furious with the phone call to company and the input from my house guest, , I called Bank of America and cancelled my check (they cancelled and did not even charge me a process fee). I also contacted 2-10 Home Warranty, a company I have had for 11 years and informed them of the situation and they cancelled the contract with Duval. Update: On 8/10/11 I received a letter stuck in my front door threatening me to pay the $100 or they would contact my home warranty company. I held off on posting this to Angie's but now I am miffed so here it is. The experience was terrible.
Description of Work: Repair HVAC unit. Company was to come out and charge A/C.

See above...nothing was ever done. He got our money and we never saw them again. UPDATE: Mr. Duval called this morning to try and rectify the situation. He was very kind and apologetic and offered to pay for the new plumber. The situation still doesn't sit well with me, but we are hoping it was an isolated incident.
Description of Work: On Monday, June 27th our downstairs flooded after living in our home for only one day. We immediately called our home warranty service--American Home Shield who put out an emergency call for a plumber. When nobody picked up the bid, we were asked to wait until the morning or find our own plumber. Because we had just moved in and didn’t have access to Internet or a phone book or were not familiar with the area, we opted to wait until the morning. On the morning of Tuesday June 28th we received a call from Duval Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing Inc that a plumber would be out that morning. At approximately 11:00 am, the plumber arrived. Before he would even look at anything he sat us down and tried to sell us a check on our plumbing that would only cost us $300.00 if they found nothing, but if they found something it would be covered under our $60.00 home warranty. We declined, and he asked for a check for the $60.00--the amount that we are supposes to pay him based on our home warranty. He then proceeded to walk around the yard aimlessly "searching" for the outside main sewage sweep. After a feeble attempt, he called American Home Sheild and his office and advised them he would have to install a sweep. He advised us it would be over $500.00 since it was not covered by our home warranty. Seeing as this sounded fishy to us, we questioned him about other ways to fix the problem and he said he could pull the toilet but couldn’t do it today because he didn't have a ring. He seemed to know our home warranty well and made sure he did everything he could to figure out a way to "fix" our problem and make us pay and it NOT be covered under the home warranty. Unfortunately it was a very obvious what he was doing. Neither of which were covered by our home warranty program. When my wife continued to question him about why our home built in 1999 would not have a main sweep, he proceeded to tell us the builder cut corners. Upon hearing this, my wife went outside and found within minutes the main sweep behind a bush. When we showed it to him, he said, "Oh, well you'll have to take the bushes out". In reality, we needed to snip three small branches and could have been done in the amount of time it took him to take his tools out of the van (he hadn't even done this yet). He started to drive off (with our money!). When we stopped him, he said he wasn't authorized to wait while we cut the bushes (by this point it was done) and they would have to dispatch him again. He said he would be in Carrollton (a town over) so he could come back as soon as he was dispatched. Immediately we called and spoke with Danielle the manager who said he couldn't come back until Thursday (2 days later!!). He took our money...took advantage of us not being familiar with our house, tried to sell us stuff we didn’t need, and left. The customer service of Danielle was horrendous. She claimed it was not his job to find the main sweep. What if we had been elderly? When asked to speak with the owner we were told he was out of the office. With 5 children we needed sewage and water and were already out hotel cost for the night before, so we had no other choice but to hire a second plumber and pay again. The second plumber was astonished at the behavior of the first! I don't believe the initial plumber had any intention of doing any work that day. In that case they should have never taken a bid for an emergency flood job. I would highly advise you to take Duval Plumbing off your list of plumbers. We purchased the American Home Shield warranty because I am active duty and deployed most of the year. I wanted peace of mind knowing my wife could find the help she needed if any problems arose with our home. We were advised by our realtor, that the people sent by AHS would be good honest people who have been checked by your company. I can tell you after this incident, my wife will be fearful to call AHS again for service. It does not give me peace of mind knowing that a con artist was sent to my house with no intention of ever doing any work. We are second guessing ourselves as to if this was a good investment or not. Again, I advise you to double check Duval Heating, Air Conditioning, and Plumbling Inc. 13193 Warwick Blvd. Ste 100, Newport News, VA 23602.

I have a fairly well known home warrantee that is supposed to pay for most of the repair but I had to pay a $60.00 visit fee! Why do I have a warrantee, because it came with the purchase of the house, but that?s another post. Then I was told that they would have to charge me almost $60.00 to insulate the pipe? It's two feet of pipe, I even had the new pipe insulation to do the job. "No Sir, I have to charge you to insulate it? so I told him, no I?ll do it myself. The job was complete, but the work area was left messy, with solder drippings all over the top of the hot water heater, and an old piece of sandpaper that was used to rough up the end of the pipe, still sitting on top of the Heater. I would have rated them at a C, but the technician didn't even clean up his mess before he left.
Description of Work: I had a slow leak from one of my pipes coming from my hot water heater. The technician arrived on time but didn’t have the correct parts in his truck to affect the repair. I couldn't believe a plumber didn’t have a standard small "T" section of pipe in his truck. How unprepared is that?!? The technician said they would have to reschedule the work. So I took off an afternoon from work only to have to ask my boss if I could take another afternoon off from work.

The issue is not only the quality of DuVal's work. A second issue is the treatment of the customer. You seldom get a human voice when you call DuVal, only voice mail. They make appointments for service calls then, as difficult as it may be to believe, break them. For example, they called on a Wednesday morning and informed me that a technician to fix my A/C would come to the house Thursday afternoon, so I took off work that Thursday. Then late Thursday morning, while I was at home waiting for their repairman, they left a voicemail saying they would have to reschedule until the following Monday! The number they left as a return call number was, yes, a voicemail. And while I pointed out in my voicemail that I needed the work done that Thursday because I could not take off another day on Monday, no one called me back that Thursday, nor was the work done. If you have other cares in your life -- young children, elderly parents, your husband or wife has lost their job -- don't do business with this company. It's not worth adding to the cares that you already have.
Description of Work: The first instance involved repair to our A/C. The DuVal repairman said he had adjusted the pressure to the heat pump. He left, but it still did not cool. DuVal returned, and a capacitor was changed in the unit. It broke down again within a week or two. We then called Sensible Warranty, since by then we had gone a couple of weeks without A/C, and Sensible said we could contract our own HVAC repairman, and we did. He said the wrong capacitor had been installed by DuVal and the motor was bad, and replaced them. No further problems were experienced with the A/C. In the second instance, in January 2011, the heat pump was not warming the house sufficiently during a cold snap. Sensible Warranty again asked DuVal to do the work. But there were so many problems and delays with DuVal, we again went directly to Sensible Warranty, got permission to contact our own heating repairman, sent the bill to Sensible Warranty and solved the problem.

I had a leak in my water pipes from my 2nd story laundry room coming from the washer. The plumbing company fixed this, but couldn?t do the drywall so I had to hire out Duval. This was a home warranty claim and they paid $250 of the $550 payment. My initial payment to Duval was my $50 deductible. The warranty company only covered the access hole. Duval charged the remaining $200 repair for the entire ceiling, which I was fine with. Unfortunately I had to leave town for work and was not there when the technician had to do the work. No instructions were given and the technician took it upon himself to texture the ceiling. The repairs were very poor quality and when I came home and saw them, the ceiling was cracking and you could see a line where the drywall was cut. I asked them to come back out and fix this. They agreed to send someone out and it was the same technician. He saw the cracks and immediately called the owners son. They said to contact the office to negotiate how much it would be to make a repair. I didn?t understand why they would charge me for repairs to work they did that I wasn?t happy with. I then called the owners son who was on vacation in the Caribbean. I was clearly interrupting him because he was very rude to me. After going back and forth with him on the phone he came to the conclusion that it would cost me $800 to have the originally unauthorized repairs repaired. My biggest issue is that none of my ceilings were textured, they are flat. The technician took it upon himself to make these repairs without my permission. Once I got off the phone with the owners son, I called the customer service department and spoke to Danielle. She let me know she had just gotten off the phone with Mr. Duval and that he was not authorizing any repairs. I ended up hiring another company to make these repairs. This cost me $200.00. My whole experience with Duval was highly unprofessional and poorly managed.
Description of Work: They performed drywall repair. They also textured the ceiling, which I didn’t want.

carpet cleaners

Toby showed up 10 minutes early and we did a brief walk through of the house. He explained what he would be doing and methodically preparing to do the job. He pre-treated the carpets and stains with a citrus-based solvent and allowed it to soak in. Once he started cleaning, most of the stains came right up - even those other services said couldn't. My carpet is white and the difference made so much of an impression on him, he took a cell phone before/after picture. His wiped up steam water off the tile and made sure he left the house much cleaner than he found it. I will be calling on them again in the future!
Description of Work: The main traffic areas of a study, living room, dining room and bedroom were cleaned and stains removed. Also a complete hallway and staircase had the same service. Furniture was moved by me before the service was rendered to expose a majority of the high traffic areas.

I called Duval a month prior because I thought my AC wasn't working. My home was about 80 degrees inside but they had a technician come out and he said it was running fine and my home was hot due to the 100 degree weather. A month later the AC unit was humming and the fan was not circulating air. The company sent out another tech the following day and he replaced the compressor in the unit that had gone bad. He was courteous and worked on the unit for about 30-40 minutes and it was fixed. I only paid 60 from the initial visit and the repair was covered under my home warranty.

We had a cracked toilet bowl and called our Home Warranty company to have the bowl replaced. The plumber arrived within the four hour window specified within a week after we called. However, we had no confidence in his professionalism and question the relationship between the warranty company and this plumbing company. After looking at our toilet and saying, yes it is cracked, our plumber called the warranty company in the privacy of his truck, then came back inside to look again, then went outside again to call. He came back in and said he wasn't going to do anything about it because the warranty company said it was a "hairline crack." I asked many questions to try and see if this was his real opinion. When I asked the question in a round about way, he agreed that the toilet should be replaced, that he would do so in his own house. This is the same information I found when googling "cracked toilets" on the web and talking with both Lowe's and Home Depot. He shrugged his shoulders and said to call the home warranty company. I asked how much it would be to have him replace the toilet anyway since he was already at our house (just a test, he had already lost my confidence). He said it didn't work that way, I would need to have a separate call. So, later that evening I called the warranty company and guess what, they said they wouldn't replace our toilet because they couldn't go against the professional opinion of the plumber who judged it to be a "hairline crack." The manager was "away from his desk." I can't imagine what kind of job the plumber would have done if he actually got the job. Egads!

They showed up on time and were nice enough but I lack confidence in their ability
Description of Work: My husband and I just moved into a home and were having our pipes back up into our basement. We called our Home Warrenty Company and they sent DuVal out on Christmas Eve to snake our pipes. After two of their plumbers "attempted" to feed the snake through the drain they told us they could not get through and that our pipes had probably collapsed and they could feed a camera through for an additional $300 but this would require another service call the following week. Replacing our pipes would cost us anywhere from $5000-$6000. We called DuVal and asked them to send someone else out with the snake to get a second opinion as we could not flush our toilets or take a shower and it would be several days due to the holiday before they could get anyone back out with a camera. They told us they could not go against what the Master Plumber said and we would have to call our Home Warrenty company for them to send a different company out if we wanted a second opinion. Later that evening my husband went and rented a snake from Home Depot for $42 and got through the clog himself the first time. I'm not sure why my husband was able to remedy the problem but a Master plumber was not but I would suggest renting a snake first for cheaper and trying it yourself before using this company. When we called and asked them to refund our money they said that the $90 was basically a diganosis fee and they charged it whether they remedied your problem or not.
