My expectation of quality customer service is that the business should call and let you know that they will be running late. I guess I am just old fashioned! I gave an overall B because my experience was "good"; not "excellent".

+ 1 moreI had an excellent experience with Universal and would recommend them. The work was done in early 2013, I have been slow in getting this review written! I purchased from the bank a foreclosure house built in 1959. The HVAC system was a nasty mess. Steffan Meade from Universal was one of multiple contractors who came out to give me an assessment of what I had, recommendations to repair or replace, and estimate on the work. My goal (which I have so far achieved) was to turn this in a high quality rental property to attract high quality tenants. I therefore was looking for quality but still at a very competitive price. There is always more than one way to design a new HVAC system when you start from scratch and Steffan's was the most common sense and the best in my opinion. For example, the existing furnace was vented thru a faulty chimney which would have cost a fortune to repair. Steffan recommended a high efficiency unit enabling me to direct vent and seal up and abandon the chimney, saving a ton of money. I was facing a wide range of other repairs and Steffan gave me good advice and names on a range of issues during his site visits. Price was important and Universal's was the lowest. I am very particular and did a lot of other repairs myself. Therefore, I was on-site and watching most of the time while the Universal crew did their work. I challenged their patience with plenty of nit picky questions and demands. They were on-time, efficient, effective, clean, tidy, courteous, and trustworthy. The system has been running for 18 months and both my renter and I are happy with its performance. Since that project ended, I have been using Universal to do maintenance and repair of HVAC at my rental and personal properties with no complaints.
Description of Work: Steffen Meade and his team completely removed every element of existing HVAC system from a rental property after I purchased it. They designed an all new system consisting of high efficiency gas fired furnace and AC to meet my specifications, installed it, and provided maintenance for the first year. They also replaced a gas fired hot water heater at the same property at the same time.

+ 0 moreeverything was great from a prompt proposal to the installation in June. Also we bought a one year maintenance agreement.. There was some duct modifications and some repair of a ripped duct section completed by this company which has made our upstairs air flow better. All in all it was worth every penny. We qualified for a $200 rebate from Virginia Dominion Power because our system is Energy Star rated. Universal helped with the application for the rebate which was hassle-free .We are very happy we used Angie's list.

+ -1 moreContractor arrived right on time and performed this service in a very professional matter. He was knowledgeable about our systems and this was the first time they had been inspected. As the systems are relatively new, no other work was needed but we did discuss a follow up visit in the fall before the heating season. As a matter of interest, this work was done under the rebate system from Dominion Power and one big plus was that Universal accepted the rebate amount as full payment for the inspection. In addition, they completed all the paperwork and accepted direct payment from Dominion as our payment. A good deal for us and it meant no paperwork and no outlay of funds on our part. Thanks, Universal. We will definitely use them again.

+ -1 moreI had closed on buying my house. The air conditioner was not cooling. The seller had me call these people. The indoor fan blower was not functioning and needed to be replaced. Universal ordered the part from a distributor and I had to wait a week or so with no air.It finally came and there was no charge to me. However, was not impressed with Steffen Meade, she was a bit snippy as I recall. Not sure if I would use them again.
Description of Work: I was buying my house and there was a problem with the air conditioning not cooling.

The main thing is that I trust John to maintain my Heating and Air systems with minimum worry and cost.

+ -1 moreJohn from Universal first came to our home in January 2014 when our downstairs furnace shut down. He correctly diagnosed the broken fan unit in the blower and replaced it the same day for $495. He also checked the heat pump at no charge and advised our freon was quite low and it would need to be recharged before summer. We called to get the freon replaced and John again came out the house. He checked to see where the freon leak was and advised that the a/c coil was shot and we could replace the heat pump and the coil or just the coil. There was a $125 charge for the service call. Having received other estimates, at $98 to $125 each, we opted to go with the coil replacement and recharge as we had already replaced the fan. John was very prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. He call to confirm all appointments days ahead and the day before the appointment. He was on time and completed both jobs in timely fashion. He was neat and professional and a really nice guy. Having spoken with 2 other HVAC services, including some of the major names on local television, I am glad we went forward with Universal and would recommend them to others without hesitation.
Description of Work: Replaced the air conditioning coil in our blower unit for the downstairs of our home and recharged and sealed a small leak in our heat pump.

+ -1 moreAfter purchasing my house less than a week ago the heat pump stopped working. The seller had rigged the system to make it run and killed the unit. I contacted Universal on Monday and within a few hours Steffen as at my house shaking his head about what had been done to make the unit run just long enough for me to buy the house. Before he left he managed to get the emergency heat working so the place wasn't so cold and didn't even charge me . The next day he provided quotes for new system and the following day I called and stated I wanted to proceed with a new system. Installation was scheduled two days later on Friday. Russell and Scott showed up on time and went straight to work. They didn't even mind me watching and asking questions. The install was great and actually looks better than the system that was in the house. Those two guys really pay attention to detail. The unit is working perfectly and my place is nice and warm again. I will definitely be using Universal again and have already recommended them to several people in the event they need AC work done.

+ -1 moreAfter this company installed a new unit in my former residence, I called them to service a rental property I own in Chesterfield County. The woman who took the call called me back after telling me that service today would be an overtime charge and they could not get there until Tuesday, but then called me back to tell me they do not service Colonial Heights. I had explained that the house was in Chesterfield County but had a Colonial Heights zip code. Instead of understanding what I told her twice, she refused service to the unit. After this I will NEVER call them again. Disgusting! The house for service today is but 10 minutes or less from the one where they installed the new unit. Steffen Meade needs to get a new attitude about valuable customers!

+ 1 moreThe service technician arrived on time and inspected the unit. He tested it and found the parts that were worn out. He gave an estimate which we approved and he repaired the work for that amount. He was professional as all their technicians have been. In the last several years they have helped us in working with Commonwealth Gas to determine the required size of the gas line we needed for a generator and tankless water heater. They assisted us with getting the gas logs properly plumbed. When we bought our home we switched from oil heat to gas. They installed the original gas furnace and we have had no trouble with it. They are a family owned business and take care of their customers.

+ -1 moreCalled Universal and Stephen came that afternoon. He went under the house to check the unit and then ran a system check on the outdoor unit. Confirmed the problem and made the repair. I have been very very happy with Universal since they installed the heat pump. On one visit Stephen realized that the error was theirs and did not charge us for the repair. They have worked on the 16 year old heat pump system which is in the attic (they did not install it) and kept it running. I would highly recommend Universal as they have been very honest and forthcoming with us.

Recently, the faucet began leaking badly. They had to replace an integral part of the faucet. I was equally impressed with the company this time. They were professional, came on time,. made the repair and honored the previous work free of charge. Their customer service is, in my opinion, unparalleled compared with most companies. Carroll will be my first call when I need a plumber because of their ethical integrity and outstanding customer service.

He sent two estimates (I'd requested information about two different types of boilers, so this was for comparison purposes), but did not try to push either, letting me decide on my own. They fit us in as quickly as they could (came later that day) and the technician thoroughly evaluated the system to determine the problem. He then explained the problem clearly and explained my options. He gave me a quote for the repair or a replacement system on the spot.

The end of the story is that I do not feel Universal was bad, but I do feel that they were unhappy that I asked for some additional help with the unit's thermostat and a better understanding of how to set it which could have been done on the day of installation PROPERLY. Also, I feel that I should have had a MUCH lower bill than the one I got from the other unit, but it seems that it did not happen that way. I think the efficiency of the new unit was not as good as it could have been. I give their service a B- and I do not think I would hire them again. I am going to have a different company do an assessment on the unit on this house to determine what the problem is and why the bill is so high.
Description of Work: After getting a bid from Steffen Meade, I signed the contract and work proceeded in a timely fashion. I had a very old unit taken out and a new and more efficient one installed. The work was done while I wasn't home, as agreed to by me, since they needed all day to get it done and I was busy at my job. The contractors were not happy that I did not arrive home until 3:30 as they were in their work truck and ready to leave. They had given my older teenage daughter directions on how to set up the system when she arrived home at 2:30 PM from high school, but they had not spoken with me until I arrived home. They were in a hurry to leave and I was unhappy that they gave a rushed, short-cut explanation to me, which ended up with me having to deal with two extra service calls when I had trouble with the thermostat. Finally I realized that the daily entry of temperatures would go into effect even after I put the unit on "permanent hold." It seemed to jump to a higher and higher heat setting all by itself! The thermostat was replaced by Steffen once but the problems continued. Permanent hold is only for a short time no matter what the issue. Meanwhile, the heating bill went through the roof...which I still do not understand since I was sold an efficient unit to replace the 15 year old unit I had, which was meant to give my poor wallet some relief! There was no explaination given to explain the INCREASE in heating costs to me for replacing the old unit instead of repairing it. My heating bill is now $245.00 monthly for 1674 sq.ft. Even though I had many seeming problems with Universal, I still gave them a chance to bid and compete on another home I bought in February and they fell short of the other company by $450.00! WOW, a second chance at business and their bid was not even close (so I went with the other company). So much for working for the customer's best interests and future recommendations to others!

Description of Work: They replaced one of our heating & a/c units. We found out later that we should have obtained quotes from other companies. One year later when we needed the second unit replaced, we got a better price from another company and more work for the money.

+ 1 moreTHIS experience wasn't my best with them, although on Heating/AC I've had incredible work from them. I was surprised at how long it took to get it all done (I replaced an electric range with a gas one, but already had gas at the house, so didn't think it would be as difficult as it turned out to be). As I served as my own designer and general contractor (first time doing anything like that) on the kitchen and powder room remodel, I also had a lot to learn about lead time, etc. I totally under estimated how long it would take. It was almost a month from the time I called until the job by Universal was completed. The first gas line they ran wasn't done correctly for the size range I had. I had no idea different range sizes needed different size lines and nobody asked me what size was being delivered later that week. Now, will I use them again? YES. Their prices are fair, their teams experienced and I've been using them for over a decade. They also stand by their work and if something isn't done to satisfaction, they make it right. This one job just seemed to be a comedy of errors on both our parts. Before this particular job, I would have given them an A+, so feel badly even reporting that this one wasn't up to their usual outstanding work.
