The senior technician arrived on time (9 a.m.), but was less-than-professional in both his appearance and demeanor. Other than his reserved greeting, the first thing that struck me about the HIX technician as he entered my home, were his tore up jeans. This was a gray haired (white) man who was at least in his 30s, if not 40s, yet he was wearing baggy jeans with big noticeable tears in the back pockets and several other places -- NOT professional. I'm guessing the tears were there when he purchased the jeans. After only a couple minutes of examining my system, the technician called me over to where he had been looking at my inside air handling system. He said I had a leak, and showed me what appeared to be a minute amount of oil on the copper coil. He ran his hands over it and showed me it on his hand too (barely visible). He then tried to sell me a whole new Trane system -- including matching outdoor unit -- which I imagine would have cost in the $5000-6000 range, or more. I reminded him my (outdoor) heat pump was only three yrs old and I had no intention of replacing it. Yet he resumed his "car salesman" pitch of how much more efficient and warrantied a new Trane system would be. It became quickly obvious to me that HIX technicians had been instructed (and likely incented) to pitch/sell entire new systems once they identify a problem with a customer's current system. After listening to the whole Trane pitch -- a second time -- I advised the HIX technician I had NO INTENTION of replacing my new outdoor unit. It was only as I reached my boiling point of frustration, that he backed off the sales pitch and agreed to get a price on replacing my leaking coil unit in the indoor air handling system. I told him I would be getting a second opinion, which I did a few days later. Actually, I got a third opinion as well. The consensus was, there is likely a tiny leak in the copper coil, but it's so small the leakage of refrigerant is minimal -- less than an ounce a year, so it's of little concern or consequence presently. Certainly not worthy of a $1350 - $1650 investment to replace the coil system.
Description of Work: My home's HVAC system had not had a checkup in almost three yrs. HIX frequently has discount coupons for this service, so I made an appointment. My current system consists of a 3 yr old Goodman heat pump and an 11 yr old Goodman air handling unit.

Thanks for your review. I greatly apologize that your experience with my company was less than superb. We have recently implemented significant changes in our service department. All of our technicians are now required to be in company lettered polo shirts and fitted work pants. We have also placed a renewal emphasis on thorough system analysis, quoting all repair options, and making energy saving and safety recommendations on every service call. We appreciate all of our customers and value each and everyone's opinion.

I was so upset that my new system ( installed by another company) continued to have problems, that I called a different HVAC company; HIX; to come out and investigate why my system kept cutting off after 20 - 30 minutes. They were fast, easy to get a hold of, and went the extra mile. The office staff as well as the very polite and professional technician were awesome. They felt so bad about what happened with the company that sold us the system, they cut us every price break they could to get it fixed. Hix will be taking over the waranty on the system. This is a 2 zone house they will be the only ones I call when the other unit wears out. They cared that we had no heat. THANK YOU HIX for my warm house!

I am a recent homeowner and this was my first call for service on my AC. I had little idea about the cost, but knew that a heat wave was coming and that I needed to have the AC fixed. Hix Heating & Air has a great rating on Angies List and is close to my home so I scheduled an appointment for between 4-6 on Tuesday, Sept. 21. After 6pm that day nobody had arrived or called to service the AC, so I called Hix to see what was going on and shortly thereafter a repairman appeared at my house. After a quick check, the repairman determined that the capacitor had blown. He told the cost for a new capacitor would be $241 and the service call would be $100 dollars. This seemed high to me, but having no prior experience dealing with air conditioning service I was not sure. The repairman installed the capacitor and left. He was at my house for a total of 20 minutes. Bothered by the high price of the capacitor, I did some research on capacitors using my AC unit's model number. Not a single one listed was over $50 and most were in the $20-$30 range. Next I went to JustAnswer.com and asked if such an excessive mark up was normal for the industry. Here is his answer:http://www.justanswer.com/questions/40we1-i-had-the-capacitor-35-5-in-my-york-h2db024s06-unit-replaced?jats=72041-51711592-ER-qq60h73x-563B7AB9&utm_source=sys&utm_medium=email&utm_content=viewabuttonlink&utm_campaign=ChatNotify So I called Hix to discuss my bill. On the first call the manager was in a meeting. The receptionist took down my name and number but told me to call again later because "He probably will not call you back." On the second call the manager was at lunch, the receptionist assured me this time that he would call by the end of the day (he didn't). The next day on my third call, the manager finally picked up. I was told that the $241 cost not only covers the part but also includes: picking up the part from the store, driving expenses, etc... The price is still excessive when all those details are taken into consideration. Especially when you consider that there was a $100 service fee also.
Description of Work: Repairman found blown capacitor & replaced it. I was charged $100 for the services performed which is fine. However, I was charged $241 for the capacitor which is excessively high. After doing some research online, I have yet to find a capacitor that costs over $50. Most of them are in the $20-$30 range.

We are a flat rate repair company as are most reputable HVAC companies in this area. Our repair prices are computed by a third party company based on our actual part prices and the average repair time. We believe we charged a fair price and delivered a quality service. As we do with all our customers, the member was made aware of the problem with his unit and he was quoted the repair price prior to us making the repair. If he wanted to price shop or replace the part himself, he could have done that at the time of the quote. Instead, he authorized us to make the repair.

I called Hix and told them what another company told me was wrong with my unit and gave them the part number. They ordered the part and immediately came to install it when the part came in. The person replacing the motor showed me the old one and explained what was wrong with it. He was very professional and made sure everything was working before he left. The price was almost half of what another company quoted. I highly recommend Hix and would not hesitate to use them again.

We called Hix Heating and A/C to get a quote on installing central air/heatpump in our house. The Hix representative was incredibly thorough. He did tons of measurements, worked everything up on his computer and explained the process step by step in terms we could understand. He gave us three possible scenarios with the cost for each. There was no hard-sell or pressure. We did get an estimate from another company and the experience was night and day; which reinforced to us that Hix was the company to do the job. They estimated the job would take 5 days. They were completely finished in 4! They had to remove a huge bush from beside our house as it was where the unit was to be placed. That was a bonus b/c I was planning to take that bush out anyway! Mr. Hix had a vapor barrier put in at no cost. The workers did an incredible job with the installation and with the clean up. They installed drywall to cover one section of duct work that was exposed in one room, painted and had moulding specially cut to match ours; all at no additional cost to us. They also worked with us to arrange financing at get the project down to a cost we could afford. Mr. Hix personally came out to inspect the work upon completion. I can't say enough just how AWESOME Mr. Hix and his whole team was; from start to finish! We could not be happier with the whole system... and our house is oh so comfortable!!

The workmen were professional, removed everything that was superfluous, were tidy, respectful, knowledgeable, completed the work in one day & left the premises in excellent shape. And the owner of the company, Bill Hix, came out and inspected before and after the job was done. I have absolutely no complaints about this company, it's equipment, or it's work and would recommend them to anyone! In fact, I already have.

The estimate was given and thoroughly explained. He gave us options and we decided on what we wanted. They arrived at the appointed time and went to work. The work went well and they were done in a reasonable amount of time. Everything was cleaned up when they were finished. We were shown all that was done and we were asked if there was anything else we needed. All the guarantees and future services were explained and given to us. We would recommend Hix with no reservations.

Hix was one of 5 estimates I received for this project. The salesman was professional and polite. He worked up my estimate on his computer in my living room. He worked with me to come up with a competitive price that matched others I had been quoted and fit in my install date within days-- I had been told by other companies I would have to wait two weeks! They installed my system in one day. The workmen were efficient and pleasant. They took care to keep everything in my house clean. After the system was in, they went through the new thermostat with me to teach me how to use it. My costs included two years of maintenance/service.

Hix was scheduled to come between 1:00 and 3:00 pm to do scheduled maintanence which includes both indoor change of whole house filter and outdoor check of heat pump. When I called to schedule, I explained it was very difficult for me to arrange to be home and gave them both my home phone (which was on file) and cell phone. I received a message on my home phone at 10:45 am that they would not be coming out due to the weather (rain) and I needed to reschedule. No phone call was made to my cell phone. I had rushed home from Chippenham Hospital (45 mins) in order to be at home on time. When I called them back, they had no explanation why they didn't have my cell phone on file. I explained to them I had to take a day off (without pay) to be here and with my work schedule it is very, very difficult to get time off during their work hours. At no time was it ever mentioned that if it rained, they would not come out. Had I know, I could have notified my supervisor that I was available to work after all. When I spoke with the office manager, Chris, I told them I now couldn't reschedule until most likely December. I also stated I would like to have been told that they couldn't come out if it rained, as I could have watched the weather myself and been prepared for same. He simply continued to state, "I have no control over the weather". I tried to explain it was a communication issue, but he continued to state the same over and over. I also requested the technician come out as scheduled and do the inside work today, and could complete the outside work at another time. Chris stated "they will not come out twice for scheduled maintenance". I was very upset, as I have lost a day's pay, in addition to scheduling my entire day around them. I requested he come out later (when I can reschedule) and not charge me for the visit, as I have to take another day off. He refused and stated "surely you can have someone there between 8:00 to 5:00." I told him I would have to find another company that would have better hours and he stated "you won't find any other company that has different hours". I then stated I would report him to this list, as I felt he could have accomodated me by at least letting the technician do the inside work. He stated he would not be threatened and terminated the conversation.

This customer was called in a timely manner to reschedule due to the weather conditions as maintenance's are not done in rain due to electricity being used. The customer then went into a tirade about about how we should have let her know this was a variable and how we were going to give her maintenance for free. She was instructed that we would work with her schedule to get someone back out there on a day when the weather permitted us to open up system she refused. After repeated tries to make other arrangements she still refused unless we gave her the contract for free. We of course cannot be held responsible for the weather and things do come up. All she kept saying is that we were going to come out and that we were going to do work for free. This is definitely not how a business relationship should be handled. Also this customer does not mention that this had never happened before nor the fact that she has always received good service. She only wants to place blame on the company for not doing outdoor electrical work in the rain.

Everything went great. I was on a short time frame, and Hix accommodated all of my requests. They had a professional work order drawn up, and agreed to all of the terms specified in my work agreement. All of the technicians on-site were courteous, professional, and hard working. Background checks had been completed on all, and each time I had a request, they immediately addressed them. They arrived on-time, displayed excellent workmanship and work quality, and left the job site in better condition than when they found it. They sealed all the ducts with mastic, used the proper materials, installed the equipment in the best possible locations, and when it was all done, spent a great deal of time giving me a tutorial of the system(s). I liked them so much, I recommended them to my father in law, who later had a whole system of his own installed. As a thank you, they courteously installed some bonus equipment on my system free of charge. Bill Hix actively participated in the job to ensure my complete satisfaction. When it was done, he re-visited to complete a smoke pencil (duct leakage) test at my request, to ensure it was as energy efficient as possible. I'd use these guys again in a heartbeat, and recommend them to anyone who asks.
Description of Work: I had a new packaged system installed, with duct work, in my upper floors. I also had new duct work and my existing system serviced in my downstairs floor. Hix installed a York 18 SEER Affinity 8T heat pump and air handler. All told, I have roughly 5500 sq ft.

Our A/C stopped blowing cold air (Tuesday evening). Called a few companies on Wed, and Hix said someone could come Thursday (temps were running about 90-95 degrees outside), early afternoon. I went home at 1, and the technician called at 2 saying he was on his way. Justin (the tech) arrived at about 2:15. It took him about 3 minutes to diagnose the problem. He got the part switched out, added the superboost and freon, and the air starting getting cooler about 25-30 minutes after he got there. I was very happy with the service and the company. Justin was great; took time to explain what he was doing, what the problem was, and what I could expect in terms of how long before things got cool again. Their service fee was a little higher than another company I called, but the good feeling I was left with more than made up for it. I'll be calling them to inquire about their service plans, etc.

I was a little concerned before the work began because I had not received a written proposal of all the work that was going to be done. I had a written estimate that was provided by the service man who diagnosed my problem, but given my experience with other companies, I was expecting a more formal document. I did call and talk with the service manager who verbally reaffirmed the estimate and told me how the work would proceed. The install team arrived promptly on time, worked through the rain showers, and appear to have completed all work neatly. Hix gave me the best price (after a $400 manufacturers rebate was applied) out of the three bids I received. Plus the unit they suggested and installed was a more efficient unit (14 SEER vs. 13 SEER) than the other companies were going to install. They also upgraded the warranty to a full 10 years covering all parts and labor. The other companies did not offer that to me.

Among the cleaning of the ducts yearly, Hix has also replaced a condensing unit for me, checked and serviced a system for me and done a few other things over the years. A+++ service. My a/c went out when the weather was 100+. I called several companies to schedule an appointment. No one could come out until Monday (this was a Friday). The temperature in our house had to have been AT LEAST 100 degrees. I then called Hix and spoke with a gentleman named Mike. Although they were also very busy he took the call, was here, and had my ac fixed within an hour. He was very professional, quickly diagnosed and repaired the unit and made sure it was working properly prior to leaving. I strongly recommend this company because these days it's rare to find a company that is courteous, professional, and compassionate with the consumer as well as being reasonably priced. This was my first experience with this company, but after such quality service it won't be my last.
