I called her and she was here within a day, she took a look at all three computers and printer. She down loaded the drivers for a HP printer and took her time. Also she installed anti virus programs and explained the importance of anti virus programs.

I recently moved and ran into some problems with reconnecting my home PC and related equipment. A competitor to House Call Computer Service couldn't fit me into their schedule for 2+ weeks, which is unacceptable RE being without a home computer. I learned of House Call Computer Service via Angie's List, and Mr. Stolte was prompt in returning my inquiry, scheduling my service, etc. The technician (Lawrence) was also prompt to arrive at my home when scheduled, and was very professional with his work. I will definitely use this company again for IT-related needs, and will recommend them to others. Suggestion: During the service call Lawrence ran into issues trying to connect my router + modem + tower and getting functional internet service. He felt there were issues with my router, so suggested I purchase a new one. That weekend I did buy a new Linksys router, but after running into exact same issues with new router, I called Linksys on my own and spent about an hour on phone with a Linksys technician. I explained to her that I had new router, and during call with Linksys was told I should not assume router bad unless/until I talk with the router manufacturer, and perhaps there never were problems with old router. Had I/we called Linksys when House Call Computer Service was at my home, purchase cost of new router might have been avoided. So, maybe don't be so quick to assume equipment bad, or recommend to customer they purchase new equipment until they talk with equipment manufacturer.

Our assessment and recommendation for the new router was based on our many years of experience in installing, configuring, troubleshooting these routers. We have done thousands of them. I will speak with Lawrence, who is a highly competent certified technician, to discuss what the process was and clues that led him believe the router was bad so that we may improve in that area. Knowing what Linksys determined was the problem with your new installation would be helpful to that process. Please email us those details when you have some time. In years past when routers were not sold on every corner, and cost a lot more money, we used to carry them in our service vehicles. That simply doesn't make good business sense anymore in light of the rapid release of so many new models so often. If you spent an hour on the phone with Linksys, Lawrence would have had to spend that same amount of time (that is actually a relatively short tech support call with Linksys in our experience) and therefore your service call bill would have been that much larger, possibly surpassing the cost of the new router. I met with Betsy at her home since I was in the area (with all my kids in tow). She was knowledgable and quick; she replaced the power source which had malfunctioned, cleaned the inside so the computer is quiet now, and even fixed software bugs while teaching me how to use Malware. My husband and I are thrilled with our computer again.

Betsy resolved all issues to my full satisfaction in short order, was very forthcoming with useful information on a number of issues, e.g., best techniques for backing up computer systems, files, etc., and even reminded me to print out the coupon I had mentioned earlier but forgotten. House Call's rates are very reasonable ($50 for the house-call, plus $75/hour, billed in 15-minute increments) and, rare for by-the-hour service, Betsy did not waste my time and money running up the bill with protracted chit-chat on extraneous issues but stayed on task and seemed genuinely dedicated to giving me good value. I could not be happier with the experience.

Betsy, the House Call IT pro came to my house and quickly saw that the computer needed to go to the shop for diagnostics. She called the next day with her report. She found and fixed a corrupt file, discovered that the computer had 1G RAM, and that there was no partition and therefore no way to get updates. Also, she told me that Vista is no longer supported by MS. She recommended that we increase RAM to the 4G total capacity for this machine (which I did) and suggested that the we change the OS to Windows 7 (we have not yet done that). She said the hardware was good and that the hard drive was a good, quality brand. Betsy was very professional, informative, and a very pleasant person to deal with. She offered to back up my data, but there were some outrageously large files in there, and I had already backed-up offline to BackBlaze, so we decided against that. I would use House Call again.
Description of Work: My Hp desktop running Vista was slow, freezing, not getting Windows updates. House Call fixed what they could and advised me on what to do next. My computer now works much better than before.

Thank you for your business and for the time you took to do this review. The problem with your computer was that it really needed to have Windows Reinstalled. You had no Recovery Partition or Recovery Disks, so that wasn't done. Member contacted HP looking for recovery discs, but they no longer offer support for Windows Vista. Windows Vista with Service Pack 2, which is what you have, is still supported with updates by Microsoft. But not being able to get updates now, and not being able to completely resolve the existing damage to your operating system, a reinstall was in order. Failing that, the suggestion was made to upgrade to Windows 7, which is (in our opinion) a much more stable operating system. Please let us know if we may be of further service to you. Description of Work: I called this company about a few issues I was having with my laptop, and Betsy answered the phone and was most helpful. She said she could come out the next day and was very prompt and professional. She got right to work and resolved my laptop issues and said to be sure to call if we experienced any other problems. She performed the work quickly and efficiently, and I would highly recommend this company. Before calling Betsy, I had phoned another computer repair company and left a message, and they didn't even return my call until two days later! I cannot remember exactly how much I paid but I think it was around $150.

I was very upset to find this report, especially 6 years after the fact with no prior complaint from you about our service. I take exception with, and dispute several of the statements you made. 1: I never talked you or anyone into buying a computer from us. You wanted a new computer and I helped you to buy what you wanted. Based upon our long association with AOpen (read more later) I did believe that what we would have them built for you would be a better computer than anything you could buy off the shelf. Further, you received an upgraded computer from what you ordered, at no additional charge to you. I also gave you a $300.00 discount for being a senior citizen, and bought you a laptop case out of my own pocket. We do offer senior citizen discounts for service calls, but not for hardware purchases. I don't remember why I did that. It won't happen again. 2: You stated that your custom built computer was ordered in March but not delivered until May 3, 2006. The facts are that you ordered it sometime on or after March 13, 2006, and it was DELIVERED on March 30, 2006 (according to an email exchange between you and I setting up the appointment to deliver it). Your check # 1152 in payment of same (upon delivery) was deposited in our Account on April 3, 2006. 3: You stated that when you were having problems with it, "Mr. Stolte would come and sit at my desk for what seemed like an eternity..." Well, that was me, trying to make you happy with your laptop. When I determined that the problem was a warranty issue that I could not resolve on-site, I spoke to my distributor, who said it would need to be sent back to the manufacturer for FREE repair. It is unfortunate that AOpen's warranty repair center was in Texas. I think that is better than having it in Taiwan where their manufacturing facility is, or in California where there US office was. Obviously, I had no control over any of that. 4: You mentioned that you lost a CD that YOU had mistakenly left in the drive. The problem with the computer at that time was a problem with the optical drive. The system was sent to AOpen's warranty repair facility in Texas. After it was sent, you emailed me to tell me about the disk. I contacted my distributor, who contacted AOpen in an attempt to recover your disk. Apparently the disk that you left in the drive, didn't make it back, but the computer did come back with a new optical drive in it. Sorry about the loss of your (according to you,obsolete CreateACard disk) but again, completely out of my control. 5: You commented that you bought a MacBook on March 4, 2007 because your laptop was in Texas again and had been for weeks. This doesn't fit with the facts either. I picked up your laptop and sent it in for free warranty repair on April 2, 2007, almost a month after you bought your MacBook. As is evidenced by House Call Computer Service's outstanding report card on Angie's list and all other review sites, I think it unfair that you give us an F for SERVICE, which is what Angie's list is all about, SERVICE. I agree that AOpen deserved an F for the quality of their computer. Many of the computers we purchased from them in 2006 came to have problems over the next year. Not just laptops, but desktops too. Because of these problems (With your computer and others) and the declining support, we stopped buying AOpen Computers in late 2006 after having had great success and great support from them for almost 20 years. We had previously sold hundreds of Aopen computers with no problems like this. Our local distributor eventually closed their office in Richmond, I assume largely in part because of the problems with AOpen. We started building our own computers in house using only Intel Motherboards and other brand name parts. (By the way, up until then, AOpen was considered to be one of the best brand names.) I believe they stopped building desktop and laptop computers shortly after all this. In early 2008 we started using a new system builder that built what we wanted, the way we wanted for a good price, and stood by them and us with great support. We still use them today and have many many happy customers using our computers. I do not dispute that you had warranty issues with your computer. And I'm sorry for that, but this falls on the manufacturer, not House Call Computer Service. We did every thing in our power to help and assist you with resolving your issues with the manufacturer and your laptop, including many 50 mile round trips to your home without any expense to you. I'm very sorry that you had trouble with your laptop, but I believe that I earned an A+ rating for the SERVICE that I provided you. Your warranty was a Depot Warranty, which technically required that YOU return it to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. I never asked you to do that, I handled everything for you in an attempt to make/keep you happy. You do understand that we lost a lot of money on this deal as a result of what I consider to have been exceptionally good service provided to you. In closing I would like to state that we are not primarily in the business of selling computers. We are in the service and repair business. We sell computers only to our clients, and only as a SERVICE to them. Every time we sell a computer, we lose the future business of fixing your old computer, but our intent and hope is that our clients will be happy with that service, and even though they should not need any service for quite a while to come, that they will recommend us to their friends and colleagues. I would appreciate it if you would reconsider your report and adjust it to reflect the SERVICE that we provided to you and your husband and cast your aspersions upon the one who deserves your negative opinion, AOpen. Yesterday, Betsy answered my call promptly and made an appointment to come by this afternoon. She was very efficient and knowledgeable, swapping out the old power supply and replacing it, testing the computer, all in about 35 minutes. Everything is working great now!
Description of Work: Betsy came to my home to replace a power supply which was causing a problem in my wife's computer. She removed the old power supply and installed the new one, reconnected all cables, and tested the computer. Everything is working fine now.

Betsy called right away regarding our crashed PC. She picked it up and diagnosed that it wasn't worth trying to repair but needed to be replaced. John restored our lost lost data (yea!) and Betsy returned the old PC. Prompt, patient, professional and professional. I only gave them a B on price because I really don't have a point of reference on what's fair and what's not. I will say though that the restored data was PRICELESS. Thank you!!

Perfect. I dropped off the laptop & software. Betsy installed and it was ready in two days. On the third day (for my convenience), she delivered my computer, and made sure that I was connected to my wireless network, and that my wireless printer works. She updated everything, and it is justlike a new machine. I refered her to a neighbor this afternoon.
Description of Work: Upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.
