F.H. Furr was one of the more expensive of 6 bids but worth the money . the salesman was the only one who went in the attic to inspect the old ductwork and offer to repair. he also offered two brands that had the seer rateing i was looking for, and the pros and cons of both w/out bias. i picked the more espensive of the two for the system communication and energy saveings. their team was on time, professional and cleaned up after themselves. i'm super anal about my house and contractors, and so far Furr is the only company to have given me what i paid for w/out any hassle or guff.
Description of Work: replaced old A/C and electric baseboard heaters w/ an ultra high efficient heat pump. install attic fan.

I contracted with FH Furr to replace the two HVAC systems in my home: an upstairs unit and a downstairs unit. I also contracted for a new water heater. It is August and temperatures have ranged between 90 and 100 degrees in my town. All of my units were working, but they are older and I wanted new, efficient systems. The Director of Sales personally sold me the work by assuring me that N.A.T.E. certified professionals would lead the install teams. Of the four technicians who worked at my home, none of them were N.A.T.E. certified. He also assured me that all technicians had "years of experience installing this equipment." However, one was a summer intern. Another did have years of experience, but only four months with the company installing their particular equipment. The downstairs team arrived a half-hour late. The upstairs team arrived an hour late. I personally had to travel to the hardware and plumbing store twice to purchase parts that the install teams failed to bring with them to the job. The downstairs team did not complete the installation work. A home humidifier installation was not completed. An air duct was cut the wrong size, causing the air filter to stick out an inch and a half from a makeshift housing. The team lead told me this was normal, but later admitted that it was not. He did not have a proper lighter to light the gas water heater, so he just set fire to a piece of paper and shoved it into the base of the water heater unit. He did not succeed in lighting the unit until I produced a proper lighter. The downstairs team walked off the job at 5 pm with the work incomplete. The upstairs team left at 8:45pm. At midnight, he downstairs HVAC has failed and is now blowing warm air. The upstairs system is leaking water through the ceiling and had to be shut down immediately. I now have no cooling in my home and temperatures of 90 degrees are forecast for tomorrow. I called the FH Furr "24 Hour Emergency" hotline and reached an answering service. I was told that someone would call me back in the morning. I paid $18,400 for this work. Other contractors submitted bids thousands of dollars lower, but I was assured the work would be top quality. I recommend avoiding this contractor at all costs.

Very well done. Chose Furr because of previous positive experience with firm and because it doesn't impose the "dispatch charge" required by other plumbers contacted today ($50-$90 just to visit, a charge sometimes waived if customer accepts the actual service charge and agrees on the spot to do the job). The slow-draining toilet wasn't an emergency, but Furr sent a technician within hours. The very plesant and knowledgable tech used an augur to scrape out hard-water deposits within the drain pipe, manually cleaned out jets under the toilet rim, and adjusted the ball float in the tank. The $171 charge reflected a senior-citizen discount advertised in Yellow Pages but not mentioned in the Angie's listing. That was about the same as the "mimimum miscellaneous" service charge offered over the phone by another plumber, who in addition would have charged a $49 "dispatch fee. This fall when my annual heating/AC service contract comes up for renewal with another contractor, I'll be checking to see whether Furr is again the best bet.
Description of Work: For slow-draining toilet, plumber augured drain pipe, cleaned jets under rim and adjusted ball float in tank.

We called F.H. Furr (based on a referral) and scheduled appt for following day. They promised to call with 1 hour notice. After a couple of confused calls as their computer was down, technician arrived around noon. So far so good. Technician was personable and completed the work promptly. Then bill was presented. He also strongly recommended additional $339 to replace a ball valve on the hot water heater. After 5 days not a drop of water on that valve. We attribute it to a sweating pipe as the cold water reflled. We declined that repair, citing wanted to search for lower labor rate.
Description of Work: Plumber replaced the pressure reducing valve and a ball valve (main house shut off). The parts at home depot are approx $55 total. After a 2 hour repair, the total charge was $804. Over $350 per hour for labor. Decent work, just inexorbitantly expensive. This was not an emergency call and was after a supposed 15% discount. Calls to other plumbers, after the work, for estimates were in the 40%-50% lower range. My sole complaint is that $350+ per hour is excessive. We live 10 min from Dulles airport. Not a rural area with travel time.

I wanted to report an extremely unfavorable service experience with FH Furr Plumbing, Heating and Air conditioning. We hired them for a very large job - replacing furnace, heatpump, hot water heater. We were informed we would not even need to be home because the salesman would supervise. We just had to let them in. All work would be completed in a day. First they arrived late. They had not clue what they were doing. They even did not have their supplies - had to go out and purchase them. My husband had to stay home to supervise them. They were there until 10 pm and then left furniture in disarray and trash (sheet metal from old furnace in basement). The next day, I went to clean up trash. In carrying the sheet metal to the trash, I punctured my hand and in fact had a huge piece of sheet metal and the old furnace piece stuck to me had to go to two emergency rooms so that a hand specialist would remove it. We tried complaining to the company about our poor service and experience. They wouldn't talk to us. They referred matter to their insurance company who denied any responsiblity because Virginia is a "contributory negligence state" so the fact that I picked up the trash that their sloppy servicemen left, I contributed to their negligence. The company could not have been less sympathetic; they were rude; the work was sloppy - they had to come back three more times because one of the units leaked - each time, we had to miss work to let them in; the insurance company didn't even address the letter correctly - it was clearly a form letter addressed to someone else; I would never refer them to anyone unless they want a company that does not stand by its work to perform work for them

Response from F.H. Furr Plumbing Heating AC & Electrical
We appreciate the member's feedback and have investigated her concerns. It is the policy of F H Furr Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. to request that customers provided a responsible adult, 18 years of age or older, to be present at the residence during all repairs and installations. This request was made for this project as well. Our sales staff is very busy helping customers find the best solutions for their specific plumbing and HVAC needs. They do not supervise the installation process. Our installation professionals are highly trained and certified in the work they do. They take great pride in their work and expertise and are never supervised by a sales associate. This job was extensive, installing a furnace, heat pump and hot water heater for her. The Furr installation team makes every effort to bring everything needed to each and every job. Though we try, it is impossible to prepare for every unique situation. On occasion an installation professional may need to leave the worksite to secure unforeseeable needed materials. Our team worked well into the night to complete this job for her in one day so that she would have everything she needed and be minimally inconvenienced. We always clean up our work areas. Because our installation professionals were cleaning up at 10 PM, they certainly could have missed a few scraps of material in the darkness. We regret that she did not call our office the next morning to report our oversight. We would have been happy to send a team out to complete the clean-up to her satisfaction. We were unaware of her concerns until she filed a claim with us about her injured hand. We are very sorry that she injured her hand, and we immediately turned her claim over to our insurance company for processing. As with all businesses, our insurance company handles such claims. We are very sorry that she apparently was not satisfied with our services. But we still stand behind our work and trust that she will enjoy the use of her new furnace, heat pump and hot water heater for years to come. Steven Cox-Director of Marketing

The plumbers from FH Furr were very professional. They showed up on time and were very responsive. The first tub I bought wouldn't fit and they explained why they couldn't put it in. When I reordered the proper tub they scheduled a new install date, arrived in time and did all the work quickly and professionally. The price seemed a little high but I've used them a couple of times now and I've been happy both times.

The sales person was knowledgeable, low-pressure and professional. They were able to install almost right away. Crew arrived a little late on the scheduled date, and got right to work, but the job lasted longer than expected; they were at our home almost to 9 p.m. They could have been a little more communicative about their progress. Crew could have done a better job cleaning up the work site. We had to vacuum up dirt and wall board debris. The furnace itself works like a dream and has made a noticeable difference in the comfort of our home.

The work was very expensive but to be expected the plumber worked fast. He was a cheerful guy, tried to stay out of our way because we were cooking dinner over top of them. I think the product is good so far. They were professional, very punctual so overall I guess I would rate them as A. I have a service contract with them so I get top priority on a service call.

The main drain to our house backed up on a Saturday night. They came out on Sunday to clear the drain. They were upfront about the costs for the service and the additional cost for the Sunday service. They confirmed our suspicion that we have tree roots growing into the main drain and that clearing the drain would probably only buy us a few days until we can have the drain line scoped and probably replaced. They worked for quite a while to clear the drain line as much as they could.

They came out and were able to complete the work on the sink for a little over $800. I had a quote from another company which was more than twice this amount. They do good work, and they are always very prompt and responsive. I have a plan with them whereby I pay them a certain amount every month and they come out and do inspections and all that stuff. I think they do the work for best value. I would rate them highly.
Description of Work: I had new countertops and a new sink put in, and so I needed to redo the piping underneath the sink because the whole thing didn’t line up well anymore. Water was leaking in our furnace room. F.H. Furr came to look at and fix. They cleaned out the line, but we have a 14 year old furnace and a.c. and lets face it they don't make 'em like they used to. So we chose to replace both units. They took off all the money we spent up front on the repair since we went with them to replace. The worker worked within our budget, described our various options for solutions with prices, left a message with the salesman when we decided to look into purchasing, and gave his best recommendation and a lo cost band-aid fix so we could make the decision in a more relaxed atmosphere instead of in the crisis mode we were in. Both the tech and sales guy were on time or early, but were curteous and called first to see if the earlier time was okay. Sales guy gave us good honest opinions and did not try to sell us the most expensive, but the best fit for our needs and budget. The best part was they installed in 48 hours from consultation and that was awesome because we were leaving on vacation shortly and the other firms we contacted were unable to schedule for a couple of weeks. We did not want to leave the leak with the bandaid fix that long so this was perfect. Installers were neat, wore booties, told us exactly how long it would take, worked hard and after a full day plus some time to refuel at lunch left without a trace other than the new equipment. Worked out well for us.
Description of Work: Reviewed leak from A/C falling into furnace. Fixed temporarily as we decided to replace units. Sent sales guy out. Decided to go with them after compare shopping. Installed new air and furnace.

I cracked the toilet tank and knew I needed to either repair the crack or replace the tank. When the plumber arrived, he said it is impossible to replace the crack or to replace the tank (not sure if either is actually true) but agreed to have the entire toilet replaced. He also replaced the toilet intake valve which was leaking, so I couldn't completely shut off the leaking toilet all night long. He gave me an estimate of about $600 which I thought was excessive, but frankly, I had been up all night and just wanted it finished. Later that day, I saw that Home Depot was offering a toilet for $99, with a $119 installation. I believe approx. $490 of my $600 bill was for the toilet--more than double Home Depot's offer. The fee for home visit was extra. (Maybe this is standard, but I once hired a company who only charged a home visit fee if I decided not to use them). Anyway, the workmanship was excellent and professional, but I would only recommend them if your net work exceeds $10 million. Otherwise, they're too pricey.

They showed up on time and the installation was completed as promised. The units work great. However, the sales estimator never called back to provide the necessary certificates for the tax credit. Even though I went to their office they didn't have the air conditioner certificate I will need for my taxes next year. While the office staff promised to mail the certificate I am still waiting two weeks later.

A saleswoman came to my house in October 2008 for quote on cleaning the whole house air duct system. I had found out about the service through Home Depot. I called 3 other companies for comparison. FH Furr was the most expensive, but also seemed to be the most thorough. Some of the others quoted only a certain amount of intake or outtake, with an extra charge for each extra location, whereas Furr did all of them for the same price. The service was actually performed in November 2008. A crew of two came to the house, followed the exact process that the saleswoman has explained to me (I kept checking to make sure I wasn't being shortchanged on anything). I was a little worried when they showed up since they seemed young (am I getting that old??) and I was thinking they might not have experience. I had nothing to worry about - they knew exactly what they were doing. Also, I requested the camera service to see the before and after in the ducts, which they did without complaint or any extra charge. They were here for close to 4 hours (some companies told me it only took 1 1/2 hours!) , and aside from a little bit of dust on the floor by the vents, all was left in good shape. They told me I was good to go for approx. 5 years. I really liked the saleswoman and the education and information she gave me. I am always skeptical, but all her info checked out. It really helped when I was calling around for quotes because I was able to figure out who was giving me a b.s. story. Thank you!

As always, a stellar performance by F. H. Furr. The only downside is the rather high cost. We had the sink area all prepped and we had bought the faucet beforehand so we were taken aback by the $230.00 price tag for less than an hour's work. Again, the work is always worth every penny but as the economy continues to decline, our calls to F. H. Furr will have to be discussed in regards to our budget.

They can t find or fix their own problems. I am offended by that. They would have gotten more business if they had been honest
Description of Work: The air conditioner in our house quit working. They came in and so called fixed it. When we had a plumbing problem we told them about it. We decided that we needed to replace the toilets in our house. Our house is twenty eight years old. They recommended nice toilets. After, when we had problems with the air, they charged four hundred dollars for the air conditioner. It ran one day and quit. My nephew checked out the system and recharged it. The whole thing cost eighty dollars. The person, who took the orders, the manager, was unpleasant. I want to be kissed before I screwed. Another company put in a heating unit for me that wasn t in straight. It was tilted. That was why we had FURR in there. We had them put the unit in and the air conditioner. I m not convinced that it s the right size for this house.

I called the service number at 8 AM. Explained that I had no water in the house (we are on well water). They promised someone would be there between 10 - 3. I emphasized that we had no water, so please be sure to keep the appointment. The dispatch assured me that there was no problem. By 1:30 I had not heard from them, so I called again to confirm. Once again dispatch assured me that they could be there by 3 PM. At 3 PM, they called me to say they would not get there until later. I explained again that my well pump was apparently not working and would they still be able to fix it today. Dispatch assured me that they could do it. At 5 PM, the plumber arrived. He tested the pump and verified that it was broken. Said he could not fix it, as it was too late. The estimate he gave ranged from $2500 to $4500. Since he left I have called other plumbers who provided quotes for significantly less. One company actually is coming to replace the pump now (at 8 PM). I am very disappointed that we waited all day for Furr to come out and then not even fix the problem.

A few years back I had Furr out on a couple of occasions to diagnose and repair problems with my HVAC system in Springfield. At first I was impressed with Furr. Their practice of wearing the shoe-covers whenever they entered the house initially caught my attention. The quality of the work performed for those items I had them complete was good. Where I had problems with them was when I had them come out to diagnose a problem and they indicated a very costly system replacement was necessary. Our AC had failed and the technician examined the exterior and interior components. His summation was that there had to be a leak in the system, although his equipment could not detect it, and even though all parts, lines, etc, were completely exposed for visual inspection and electronic detection. He assured me that, based upon his prior experience, the leak absolutely had to be in the inside tubing that transported the coolant between the coil and the compressor, outside the house. He said that replacing the tubing meant we'd need to replace the coil, as well. He advised we have his estimator come out to review our situation and provide an estimate. As is usually the case in residential systems, our coil sat atop the furnace. The estimator observed that our furnace, in the lower-level of our home, sat too close to the floor joists and that the new coils were a-frame types that would not fit between the furnace and the joists. Therefore, he said, we'd have to replace the furnace to accommodate the new coil housing. So - we were looking at an entire system replacement, including heating and cooling. Based on the cost and simple common sense, I decided to get a 2nd opinion. You can guess what happened. The 2nd contractor (don't recall name) checked the system, found a simple problem, resolved it - and our AC was back online and performed just fine for several more years, until we sold the house in 2005. Although F. H. Furr was punctual, and performed well on the work they did for us - I recommend against them as I feel that either the integrity of the company or, at the very least, the personnel they staff, is - at best - questionable.
Description of Work: Diagnostics and repairs to the air conditioning system including the exterior compressor and examination of the interior components.
