This went well. They arrived when they were supposed to, they had an idea of how to fix the problem, and they fixed it.
Description of Work: They came out and checked my electrical panel. They tightened a few things up and re-did the connection to the mail electrical line. I had been having problems with certain appliances tripping the breaker. This seemed to fix the problem.

This customers electrical panel had loose connections on her main feeder lines, loose connections cause resistance and heat. Breakers will trip when they heat up because they are thermally activated. Her situation could have caused a fire eventually.

I wanted a ceiling fan installed where there was no wiring for one, so they did the wiring for that, including a wall switch, and assembled and installed the fan. While up in the attic, the technician noticed that there was an attic fan that was not hooked up to the thermostat, and offered to correct that at no charge. They also wired the microwave oven properly; it was supposed to be on its own circuit, but was not. They had to cut holes in the drywall to do so, but did it neatly and left the parts that were cut out so they could be used to patch the holes later. These gentlemen were very neat and professional. I have used them for other jobs in the past and will continue to use them.

So far, we have been pleased with our experience with Benfield. Although the scheduling with the office was a little tricky, once we got on the schedule, things have been good. Our estimator was prompt (at 7am) and very professional and knowledgable. We quickly signed the contract, as we have faith in the service/product after our meeting. We've gotten good follow-up, since, and now we are only waiting for the unit to be installed.

The company that called me a week after I called Benefield was PSP Power Solutions, which I learned later was a Division of Benefield. Their estimate for installing the Generac 20KW as a whole home standby was more than a third less than two competitors, both favorably reviewed on Angie's List . Since this was right after a 4 day regional blackout, they told me that they wouldn't be able to start for about 45 days. Their estimator was very competent, and gave me a complete picture of the process. An advantage that Benefield had over their competitors is in-house gas installers. They also kept in touch during the interval between the contract signing and the installation. Their electricians, plumbers and technicians were knowledgeable and skillful, performing a very neat and efficient install. The only difficulty I had was relaying information through their management to the experts who did the install. However, we've had two power outages in the last month and the Generac 20KW has worked beautifully. The huge difference in price was well worth the communications and delay issues.
Description of Work: They had to place a 450 lb generator next to my house on a gravel base. Then they arranged for Washington Gas to install an upgraded gas meter (about $400 and not part of the install estimate). The electrician installed a transfer box which controls the switching of power from the generator and back to utility power on the side of my house (usually this are installed inside the house). The transfer box had to be hooked up to my main electric switch box in the basement. The electrician also installed three odelay controls for my water pump, air conditioning and electric oven, so that the generator would not be overloaded by simultaneous use of these power hungry machines. The gas fitter had to navigate a 10" covered crawl space (so did the electrician) to get the flexible 1 1/2" natural gas pipe from the generator to the new meter. Both specialists did a very neat install with members of each team helping the other when needed. Two 8' grounding rods were driven into the ground and connected to either side of the generator. A technician described and demonstrated how the generator worked and pointed out issues I should be aware of concerning periodic maintenance. Due to some problematic communications the county inspector had to make three visits before we received his approval. Dos and Don't Do use Angie's List Do get three estimates Do ask lots of questions Do be explicit about what you want Don't make any assumptions

Approximately a week after a major power outage, which left us without power for a couple of very hot days, we decided to invest in a whole house 20kw generator. After researching several possible installers, we decided to get quotes from 3 sources, Benfield being one of them. When I first called Benfield on a Monday, they took my information down and said they would have to call back. Due to the massive power outage they were very busy, which was the case with all the installers I spoke with, and that they were in the process of putting a schedule together. The lady on the phone said she would call us back to confirm when she could get us scheduled and she was going to try to get us set up for Thursday, Friday at the latest. No one bothered to call. We called them at least 6 times over a three week period trying just to get a person out to conduct an estimate. On two separate occasions we were told that a person would come out, but no one ever showed nor called. The last attempt, I expressed my frustration and stated that although we really were interested in doing business with them, it sure felt like they weren't interested in doing business with us. The lady seemed sincere as she apologized and explained how crazy busy they had been. She again said she would get us scheduled and send someone out. That never happened and no one every called. I understand getting overwhelmed, but a professional organization should be able to prioritize and follow-up with a potential customer that has gone out of their way to be understanding and patient for 3 weeks. It is unacceptable to have a customer schedule time for someone to come by, and then not even show up, much less not call to cancel or explain delays.

Benfield Electric wired this house when it was built in 2008 for Decko Homes and Remodeling who went bankrupt during final construction. We finished the wiring and got paid by the owner. Final electrical inspection by Prince William County occurred on 09/05/08. We had a warranty service call from the builder in October of 08 for a switch issue which was corrected. No other warranty calls have been made since that date. I spoke to the home owner on 08/14/12 to get his input of the issues he had with the home, unfortunately he was not aware from the builder that he could have called us during his one year warranty period and had the issues corrected for free. Benfield Electric wires new homes for most of the biggest builders in Virginia including NV Homes and Toll Brothers. We take our business seriously and it's unfortunate this home owner had to deal with these issues alone.

I called Benfield on Friday afternoon to schedule a service call. They explained I could have emergency service at a higher price or schedule an appt for today (Monday). I chose the latter option. Benfield provided me with a two hour window in which they would arrive and they were on time. I showed the workers the electrical panel and the affected circuits and they took it from there. Within one hour's time they had located and fixed the problem. They also identified that I had a GFI outlet that was not working properly and they changed that out for me. The workers were courteous and professional.

They arrived on time on the day that the work was to be done. They laid down tarps to protect our floors. They completed the work in a timely manner with very little disruption to our schedules. Since we recently had our attic insulated, they took special care not to damage the insulation when installing the ceiling fixtures. The lighting that they installed has been a very nice addition to our home and the work that they did in the basement storeroom provided not only additional lighting but safety as well.

The technicians were timely and professional. I had to pay an additional $35.00 out of service fee. Also paid an additional $150 ($25/light) because the lights were installed in my kitchen without attic access. I was a little confused about the latter charge, thinking it covered minor repair work to the ceiling where the lights were located after installation. The technicians swept the floor and wiped down the counter space once completed. Overall it was a good experience.

This customer is in an area we do not normally service for residential repairs or installations. Our generator department does however. I called about their deal in Angie's List to install 6 recessed lights and 1 dimmer for $599. They had good reviews and I'd planned on using them. In talking with Jim on the phone about details, he indicated there was an additional $150 charge if there was not direct access to the ceiling from above (as in an attic affording access to a top floor ceiling). I went back to their offer on Angie's and there was no mention of an additional charge. We were going to have lights put in our kitchen and basement and I would have had to pay the $150 twice. I used a different company I found on Angie's who did the work for $99 per light and was very happy with the outcome. I felt Benfield was deceptive in their pricing.

This is another customer that fell victim to the add not having the note stating "Requires attic access or additional charges may apply". This was over looked by sales staff at Angie's List and we were told it could not be corrected. There are always going to companies cheaper or more expensive than one another, this is how competition works in the market place. Overhead costs or how busy that company may be at the time can effect pricing as well.

I think I would have remembered some one wanting to get their entire home rewired. I always do my field estimates between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm depending on the customers location. I call all customers prior to the scheduled time if I am going to be delayed, which happens rarely because most of my appointments are a 30 minute or one hour window. It didn't. They were difficult to work with. Originally contacted Benfield in August to discuss a possible home standby generator. A few hours later I received a call from PSP company about a generator. I did not know who this was and did not respond. Next day I called Benfield to inform that another company was calling me only to learn they had purchased PSP. So I called PSP back and said was interested but let's wait until the big rush subsided after the storms. A few weeks later PSP called to say they would in my area on Saturday and wanted to drop by for a survey. I told them I was unable to be there. They asked could they do an outside survey-I said yes. On Saturday they dropped by and push my wife to come in and inspect. I had specificallly said no. My wife said no. We did not hear back from them. I called PSP again on 10/14 and after being sent to the service dept by mistake finally got to sales. The person taking my call did not seem to know what to do. I asked for a sales rep to call me back. I have never heard back. Hate to submit a negative report but others need to be prepared for a lot of wasted time, effort, and frustration dealing with this company.
