Excellent!
Description of Work: Trademasters have been our preferred HVAC provider for nearly 20 years, over the course of three houses we've owned in Arlington during that period. They are unfailingly courteous and efficient and always responsive to our needs, be they the regular bi-annual system maintenance or the occasional equipment problem. Their rates are fair market but they provide supreme value for our dollar. An added benefit of using Trademasters is that they also provide plumbing services. It makes it so easy to just call one service number for virtually all our HVAC and plumbing needs. From the front desk staff to the experienced journeymen who show up at our door, we love the Trademasters team!! Highly recommend!!

First call was because Condo A/C not cooling and frozen-ice on copper pipes. First visit( Friday before July 4th) the technician checked and said I had to just let the pipes thaw. He was here about 5 minutes. Second visit(July 5th) technician checked the unit and added freon. He also spoke knowledgeably about what to expect and how the units work and how to get the best performance out of the systems. We knew that the freon addition could fix the problem or it could be a bandaid---but it was a fix to start with before moving to other potential and more costly problems. Success!--the freon did the trick for about 10 days, then it stopped cooling but there was no ice on the pipes. I called and was able to have the same technician come out that day to check and verify the issue. It was the capacitor part only. He had that part available, so within about 30 minutes we were back in coolness. This company also installed the unit in 2004. I have been very satisfied with the service from Trademasters. I record the name of the technician because the good ones are really knowledgeable.
Description of Work: A/C in Condo not cooling; pipe frozen--after unthawing, added freon--later stopped cooling again--so Capacitor was replaced.

Plumbing: The float had rusted through in the guest bathroom, and the shut-off valve in the tank had loosened. I called to arrange an appointment. I tried to coordinate it with another contractor's arrival, but was told the plumber doesn't work in Arlington at 4PM - it's too far a drive home for him. On the appointment date he arrived 1 hour late. I requested that all parts be replaced due to the age of the equipment. I was told that wasn't necessary. About 10 days later, I had company over, and midway through the party a friend tells me that he'd just snapped off the handle to the toilet in the guest bathroom. I called Trademasters, and they said someone would get back to me in 24 hours (it was a Sunday). Tuesday - having not heard from them - I went to the hardware store to get a replacement handle and lever, and did it myself. HVAC - Around the same time in October, I needed some ductwork repaired. I called Trademasters, left my information and was told someone would get back to me. Two days later, I called again, left my information and was told someone would get back to me. The next day I scheduled the appointment for an estimate. Again, I tried to time this on the same day as another estimator. I was told that was impossible as their estimator was out of town for the rest of the week. R & B, Inc. came to do an estimate and it was very reasonable - rather than waiting until the following week for Trademasters, I canceled my appointment.
Description of Work: Replaced the float and valve in a toilet tank.

Response from Trademasters Service, Inc.
We always try to impress our customers, and it is obvious that we fell short of that goal with you, and I do apologize. While our master plumber who ran your call does routinely recommend repairs that could, left uncorrected, cause property damage or flooding, he takes a more conservative approach when recommending replacing parts that do not represent such a hazard. The feedback from our customers has shown us that customers prefer the more conservative approach. We have received overwhelmingly negative feedback about plumbers and technicians who recommend replacing non-critical parts just because they are “old.” We do have plumbers (and technicians) on call, and you should have received a response call within an hour. We also have managers on call as well, so if customer makes a second call to the answering service, the manager will be notified so he can find out why the customer has not been called back. I reviewed the on-call report, and it appears that service failed to categorize the call as “an emergency,” and did not page the plumber on call. For our other customers, I recommend calling the service back if you do not receive a call from the on-call plumber or technician within one hour. Also be sure to tell the service that your call is “an emergency” for any service you want performed (or any phone call you want returned) after normal business hours. Since we cannot predict how long a repair call may take, we only offer scheduling windows and never exact appointments. We do offer to call customers on the way ½ hour ahead on a cell so they do not have to sit at home and wait to help to minimize the inconvenience. We simply cannot accommodate any calls at 4 pm. The absolute latest we can promise is after 2 pm, since our field employees start at the shop between 6-7 a.m. and generally finish up around 2 pm with their calls for the day. We do offer a “first call” window that is 7:30-8:30 that may customers prefer. While the simple explanation is that it is too far to drive, due to traffic, we simply cannot schedule calls in Arlington or DC during peak rush hour. It would drive the client prices through the roof if we routed technicians and plumbers through the very worst rush hour traffic in the area each day. We have quite a few highly-trained and certified specialists at Trademasters. One of our specialties is duct design and air balancing, and our specialists have taken specialized training and become certified in the design by one of the industry leaders, NCI. When you called, we had two of our certified duct designers working on a government project and one on vacation. That is what caused the delay. We were hoping one of the men could be freed up early one day to come to your home, but there is no excuse for not calling you back and keeping you informed about what was going on. Recognizing that weakness in our processes, we have made some changes to address such communication issues to help prevent them from reoccurring. We also understand that there are many qualified businesses in the area. We are happy that you found a company that you are happy with. I again apologize for the poor communication and negative service experience you had with us. We appreciate that you took the time to leave feedback so that we have the opportunity to improve. Sincerely, Kathy Townsend Office Manager

Even though the services that Tradmasters offers was mandated to me by my condo association, I have since voluntarily retained them to service my single family home, as well as deal with other various small jobs (mainly plumbing). When they come out to perform an inspection they talk to you about not just the basic inspection items (air filter, etc.) but they also go above and beyond what they are required to do and also provide advice on the heating/AC system. They advised me to install some saftey items for my tenant, as well as purchase water alarms. They showed me how to inspect for water leaks, and what to do in case of an emergency. They have also looked at my washer/dryer and toilet briefly, even though this was not part of what they were required to do. In all cases they never charged me for more than the contract price for anything - everything that I received beyond the normal service call was initiated by me setting up an appointment with them. You never feel as if they are pushing any additional products or services on you, but they do provide you with the recommendations in case you want them. Everybody that has ever come out has been extremely friendly and professional. This kind of service is definitely hard to come by. Ira is one of their best technicians.
Description of Work: Trademasters provides me with an annual contract of $155 that includes two inspections in my condo semi-annually - one for heat and one for air conditioning. If anything needs to be replaced this cost would be additional.

After examining our furnace during its spring check, the Trademasters technician told me that the "secondary heat exchanger" had "white spots and rust" on it (he wrote "fail" on his report), and that he had to turn off the gas because the furnace was unsafe. The technician said the secondary heat exchanger could allow carbon monoxide to escape into the house. I asked whether this could be repaired or if the furnace had to be replaced. He said emphatically that the furnace had to be replaced. After he left I did research on the internet. Evidently this problem with secondary heat exchangers has been a big issue, with Carrier being sued and coming up with a class settlement on it. Carrier's website had an information page on the issue, and it clearly states there is no safety issue with a bad secondary heat exchanger (and explained why). I called Trademasters, relayed this info, and asked them to come back out and turn the furnace back on. They refused (and the technician now claimed there were "cracks" in the exchanger). Trademasters said the furnance was unsafe and if we wanted we could turn on the gas ourselves. I called another company to come out the next day. They confirmed that while there were "pinholes" in the secondary heat exchanger, there was no safety issue and we could use the furnace until we begin to have problems with it not heating adequately. We don't have to immediately buy a new furnace and could have awhile before the furnace has a noticeable problem. At the very least Trademasters was ignorant about a common industry issue and its solutions (replacement is an option). This has made me wonder if they weren't just trying to sell us a new furnace. We won't use them again.
Description of Work: They performed a "spring check" on our Carrier furnace and air conditioner.

Response from Trademasters Service, Inc.
We stand behind our diagnosis. Trademasters is (and was) aware of the class action suit against Carrier, and we feel strongly that compromised heat exchangers (ones that contain white spots, cracks or breaches) are dangerous to the residents in the home. And even though Carrier offered its customers credits of up to $1100 to replace the secondary heat exchangers or buy a new furnace, and a settlement of $450 to the participants of the class action suit, they never admitted any fault or issued any warning about the safety of their product. Trademasters technicians receive extensive training in carbon monoxide detection and combustion analysis from NCI and a specialized course on recognizing failures in heat exchangers from the Heat Exchanger Experts, both recognized as industry experts in this field. Unfortunately, every company does not invest in its employees’ training, and we feel that the other company may have been mistaken.

For an initial fee of $95, Trademasters sent out a mechanic that was very good at his initial analysis ... and made sure that I knew that! After receiving the relatively high estimate on the AC compressor replacement, I did my own investigation and found out among other things that the compressor was still under warranty by its manufacturer, Trane. This should have been identified by Trademaster prior to the estimate, since they had installed the unit originally. After another call to Trademaster and the understanding that the compressor would be replaced under warranty, I was told that that the labor to replace the compressor would be approximately $300. The unit replacement went fine, however a week or so later I received a invoice for $950 for approximately 2.75 hours work! After at least 4 quite disturbing and difficult telephone calls this amount was reduced to $700, which I very reluctantly paid.
Description of Work: Inspected AC system and determined that system had a compressor failure. The company then provide a $2000+ estimate to replace the compressor. The second phase of the work included replacing the AC compressor, but not without significant issues as noted below.
