McCarthy Services

In May I called McCarthy to schedule an appointment to have someone repair a toilet leaking around the base of our ground floor powder room. The technician came out that week during the scheduled appointment time. He recommended purchasing and installing a new toilet (which would only cost about 25% more) because the leak was around the base is difficult to diagnose, and the toilet itself may have been unrepairable. He recommended I contact a particular company to purchase a specific until, and told me to call him directly to schedule a day to have it installed. I would then pay the McCarthy representative for a fixed price that would cover the toilet and installation. I confirmed we would do that. He was very friendly and professional. The next week I called the company to see if I could purchase the toilet by phone, and the sales person was very unhelpful and confused about the proposed arrangements. I called the staff at McCarthy on his cell phone, and he said he would work it out. We confirmed a date the following week he would come to install it, and selected a day, but not a time frame. The day came, he had not called to confirm a time frame, my husband stayed home, he called the technician, who was unable to come. I called the office to follow up. The receptionist was also confused by the arrangements I had made directly with the technician. She scheduled a day and time frame for him to come out and complete the installation. He came on that assigned day with another technician. They promptly completed the installation at the initially estimated price. While that staff was very friendly, and the end result of the project was good, trying to work directly with the technician was confusing and caused delay. While I truly believe he was aiming to be helpful, I recommend working and communicating only directly with the office staff to schedule and arrange any work. I have used this company for other plumbing and water heater work and have been very satisfied.

The job went very well overall. They were professional and they followed through on what they committed to do, at the price that they said. This company is a good value for your money. It wasn't the cheapest company, but I think they were the best company for the product, service, and price we got. Overall, it was a very good deal.

Excellent. I was away on business and my wife came home later to find water on our floor, leaking from our furnance area. McCarthy quickly came out as we frantically called HVAC people at 1am. They discovered our drip pan had been melted due to a previous problem (that was not caught earlier by a different HVAC repair man when that firm fixed the problem). They ordered the part and came and fixed. Very professional.

We've had some issues with our half bathroom for months. We were intermittently smelling sewer gas and seeing moisture accumulation on some of the tiles. We had been nervous about calling a plumber because the choices were so overwhelming and we were concerned about the cost. I finally zeroed in on McCarthy Services here on Angie's list. I called in the morning and asked if I could get a plumber by the next day. The courteous person on the phone offered to send someone on the same afternoon. That person was Mike Hastings. From the first minute that Mike arrived, my trepidation turned to calm. He examined the toilet and gave me an estimate. I thought it was reasonable and told him that we would eventually have him come back and replace one of our old toilets with a new one. (I needed to discuss that with my partner first.) Mike gave me two separate estimates--one for fixing the seal and another for installing either of two water-efficient models. He said that if I wanted him to do the installation work right away, he had both models on the truck. He then worked on the broken seal and I made the call about getting the new toilet installed. We decided to have it all done on the same day. As the cost of plumbing goes, we found the amount of work and scope of work reasonably priced. Couple that with outstanding, efficient, friendly service, and you can call it a good deal. I'm glad we found McCarthy Services and would call them again in a heartbeat. They're now in my address book as the company to call.

The guy was nice, clean, professional and showed up in the time frame - that's about it. I do feel he took advantage of my wife - BEWARE of this company as they seem to have some "ethical" issues hiding behind nice guys and prompt service.

Overall: Quality of work was excellent but the service was pricy. My first complaint is that when you call to make an appt, you can not get a quote over the phone, even when the job is very easy to describe. So after being told that someone would have to come look at the job to provide a estimate, we agreed to have someone come out because the work needed to be done. For a 4pm appointment time, the serviceman arrived at around 5:30pm, but he did call us at 4 to let us know he would be late. Upon arriving, the serviceman quoted $425 for the job which I thought was a little high. I told him I was hoping the job could be done for under $300 and he proceeded to tell me that the last company he worked for would have charged $850 and told me how good of a price this was already. Rather than tell me how much someone could be charging me I would prefer to hear a justification as to why the price is what it is.. I pushed back still and he got impatient and told me that he didnt have to do the job and that he could just leave, which it seemed like he had had a long day and almost preferred that. Since it would have cost me the $80 house call fee that is standard amongst most home service companies, I let him do the job. The quality of the work was definetly very good. They used a flexible gas line which I had never seen before that made the job a breeze. He was done in <1 hour. If money is not a problem and you need a quality job, I would recommend McCarthy, but unless $400/hr really the going rate for a plumber these days, I am confident there are other capable companies out there that charge less for the same service.

We called them to replace a shut off valve in our townhouse. They were very nice and professional on the phone. The plumber was courteous and neat, wearing booties to keep our floors clean. However, the estimate was for over $900 to replace a simple valve. He reported that it would take 2.5 hours. That's over $360 an hour! We told him no thank you. We still got charged a $45 service charge, which was not refundable if the work was done, like other plumbers I've worked with.

It was a little bit expensive, but I figured it would be. The people on the phone were great; they were actually able to get us scheduled for the same day. It was even on a Sunday and there wasn't any additional charge. The person that came out was great. He did his best to fix it without having to do a lot of really costly work. He used some parts to fix it instead of replacing the whole thing. He was definitely honest and a good guy. I didn't do any comparison shopping.

Extremely pleased with Randy's (and McCarthy's) professionalism and service. Best plumber I've ever dealt with.

They did show up on time and they wore booties when they came in the house. They wanted to know all of my issues and they were knowledgeable. I thought the experience was good. It was just a matter of whether or not I was going to do the work because of the cost.

He arrived at our house around 9pm, was careful to avoid water damage from water coming out of the ceiling, was able to help with a basic water damage assesment in our ceiling, locate the leak, repair the pipe, knowing what information we would need for insurance purposes and provided a reference for a water damage cleanup service. Finally leaving at midnight.

It was excellent. They were timely, and they didn't try to up sell me at all. They even told me that one aspect I was considering was unnecessary. They are good natured, efficient, and informative.

They were meticulous in their work. They were very organized. They came out and there were no hassles.

We liked their timeliness, they were able to come out as soon as we called and when it was convenient to us. He was very flexible with the cost and I was very happy. I plan to use them again if something comes up.

My friend and accountant referred me to McCarthy services for a proposal to replace my HVAC, J. Patrick Murray came to my town home to provide an estimate. Mr Murray arrived on time with a professional and courteous demeanor with a good sense humor. Mr. Murray looked at the type and location existing units and to annotate possible adjustments to the gas pipe for the new furnace to ensure fit and access for maintenance. While making his notations, Mr. Murray inquired about the existing units performance and concerns. I showed him how one of the returns dislodged from the vent and he said that would be repaired at the time of installation. He wrote the proposal for the system that included the following: modifications the technicians would make to fit the furnace, tax relief for my 2010 tax year and repair the return all noted in the special instructions. Mr. Murray discussed warranties and prices of the options. I opted to replace the existing humidifier and selected the air cleaner to eliminate dependence on air filters. 03/08/10, the technicians arrived promptly ready to work. They offloaded all of the the units for installation and removed the existing units. The new air conditioning unit required a larger base and the area was dug precisely to fit. Upon installation of the new A/C unit and digital thermostat, the technician demonstrated how to program the thermostat and tested the A/C performance. The technician that installed the furnace also took the time to build a new base for the duct stack, modified the gas pipes, re-connected the return to the vent, and demonstrated how to remove and clean the permanent filters for the air cleaner. The technicians started at 8AM worked diligently and finished by 3:30pm. They removed any debris, wiped down any fingerprint smudges and wore protective coverings on their shoes. I went out to lunch and visited with my neighbor. McCarthy Services are an excellent and reputable company that provided consistently good customer service beginning with the receptionist who scheduled my initial appointment for a proposal. I recommend them.

We had a maintenance contract with this company for three years where they came to our house twice a year in the spring and fall to inspect our HVAC system and check for problems. The company told us that having a maintenance contract would get us priority service in the event we had a problem. In late January, we called McCarthy to report that our heating system was not functioning properly. A technician came out, diagnosed the problem as a faulty relay switch and replaced that switch for $140. The system's performance did not improve, so we called again three days later and requested another appointment. The technician who replaced the relay switch called me to tell me that he wasn't really that familiar with my type of heating system and to let me know that his "Service Manager" was going to accompany him to our next appointment. The Service Manager looked over the system and acknowledged that it wasn't working properly, but said he would have to go back to his office and do some internet research to try to figure out the problem. He promised to get back to me in a few days with a plan for fixing the system. I asked him to also provide me with a quote for installation of a new boiler which he promised to do. Several weeks went by and I never heard another word from anyone at McCarthy. I eventually called to inquire about the status of my repair and no one returned my call. I finally gave up after tolerating a poorly functioning heating system for a month and called another local HVAC company. The technician they sent diagnosed the problem within an hour and had the system functioning properly within two hours. I spent several hundred dollars a year on a maintenance contract with McCarthy believing I was paying for quality service and the peace of mind of knowing that if I did have a problem, it would be fixed quickly and efficiently. I now realize that I spent that money and got nothing whatsoever in return.

I have used McCarthy Services on a regular basis since I purchased my house in 2005, and have always had a good experience with the company. Today was no exception. The plumber arrived on time, identified the problem, and had the equipment necessary to make the needed repair. I continue to be a very satisfied customer.

They took everything out, the compressor, the blower, the old furnace structure and took it away. They then installed all new equipment and tested it to make sure it worked properly. In addition, they installed a new electronic thermostat which keeps the temperature spot on. I had advertised for this service on the internet and got a vendor. Before the work could start, McCarthy called me and said they could sell me the same unit for $700 less. So I canceled the first vendor and let McCarthy do the work.

We were scheduled to do an annual spring HVAC checkup; took day off to be home. They never showed, nor did they call. I called their office next day to ensure there was no miscommunication--they showed it on the schedule and service tech in area. The had no explanation. I explained I had taken the day off, and that I was considering a new HVAC system and requested a manager return my call before I rescheduled the cleaning services included in the original contract. I believed the new system would further incentivize them hoping the spring cleaning was an anomaly. Manager never called back. I called and explained my frustration with their lack of respect and willingness to fulfill their legal rqtms as stipulated in their contract an that I wanted to cancel my contract for the remainder of the period. They pedantically informed that was not possible. I asked that the manager call me to explain how he cannot fulfill a contract that I am unable to cancel. I told them if I did not hear from them within 48 hours I would file a complaint with the BBB and pursue small claims court. Again, they never called back. STAY AWAY FROM THESE THIEVES.

Went very well from estimate to installation.

Our A/C wasn't working when we returned from vacation. We used the troubleshooting list on McCarthy's website and when nothing helped, we called them and they came the next day. The compressor was swollen and needed to be replaced. After that was done, the service guy said that the grills around the coils were clogged with debris and should be cleaned or the the same thing would happen again. I told him to go ahead and do that as well. When he was finished he started asking about other work we might need to have done, pointing out that the company was McCarthy "Services." I felt like I was getting the hard sell in my own home; $565 seems very high for the short amount of time that he was there. Despite what he said, the "clean" coil and grill didn't lower my electric bill at all.

The sales person was very helpful and did not up-sell on unnecessary upgrades or equipment. The installers were punctual, installed the heat pump and fan, and explained to me how the system operates. One month later and everything is running smoothly. I would recommend the company and will use them in the future.

I have been using Steve's services for about a year. He turns around a bid really quickly. He is very prompt and knowledgeable. He can handle any kind of plumbing issue.

Overall extremely well, and without any issues or difficulty. The system was well worth the price and the installation has given us no problems whatsoever.

They also inspected a a track, they were late coming for the plumbing and it did take them awhile. They could have been more prompt. They work was done well though.
