They provide reliable services. They do not rip you off and will let you know what you need to do. Also they are happy to be working for their employer. There is definitely a difference in the service provided by these people. They look after me and I am happy.
Description of Work: I have a service contract with them every year. In addition, I have changed my heat pump and air handler, and water heater with them.

409We had a major problem with the old unit. A manager came out to inspect the premises, and told my husband and me what was causing the problem and how he proposed to fix it. The team came on time, but there were some issues that had to be resolved before the work could begin. Those issues were resolved to my satisfaction, and the men did the above mentioned work. They worked hard to had the system to the smaller space that we have in the condo. They did an excellent job cleaning the ducts and making sure the new system was working. Lastly, they cleaned up their mess.
Description of Work: Removed old heat pump. Installed new heat pump, and cleaned air ducts.

I have had McCarthy Services out to my home to perform the seasonal heating and air conditioning services for the last 15 months as well as one service call. They are a bit expensive and while the technicians are always pleasant and knowledgeable, I cannot say the same for the staff that answers the phone. Every time I have called, the person that answers the phone (varies) does not sound happy to be answering the phone and acts as if it is an inconvenience to schedule a visit around the customer's schedule. When I had a scheduling issue (i.e. I had them coming for service one week and they didn't show up), the lady on the phone argued with me, got an attitude, and was beyond rude. Even though the service techs are great, it is not worth it to me to continue to deal with the people that answer the phone, especially when there are other companies out there. I will NOT be renewing my service contract with them next year.

McCarthy installed our whole house generator about 5 years ago and continues to provide us with semi-annual maintenance. They are always prompt and professional.
Description of Work: McCarthy Services provided the semi-annual maintenance on our whole house generator. This includes oil and filter change, spark plug, air filter and a check of the outcoming voltage and frequency. Andy is our service specialist and always prompt and professional.

The work went very well. My only complaint would be the price of the job.
Description of Work: Earl came out a little after 11am and got right to work. I had squealing sounds every time the washing maching switched from filling in hot and cold water. You could only hear it upstairs, esp. in my bathroom. He figured it was due to a water valve to the master bath toilet. He also noticed it needed new work on the inside. This cost most of the money, since his company uses products that are quaranteed to last 5 years, tho his company only guarantees for one year. Earl also fixed a drain in the first floor bath sink.

It went very poorly from the start. The A/C went out on 5/24. A call on 5/24 went unanswered. I called back on 5/29. Wendy said that they don't answer calls on days before holidays unless it is an emergency. I was scheduled for Friday 7/1 between 2-6 pm. The McCarthy Service technician called at 2:00 PM to say he was leaving now. But because of traffic he might get out there before 6:00 PM. He did not like driving on I-66. I thought that was strange and suggested he drive out Braddock Rd it will never takes more than an hour from Alexandria on Braddock. He insisted Manassas was too far out and it will take a long time to get out there. Okay kinda strange. He got to my place at 5:45 PM and sat in his truck making cell phone calls until just after 6:00 PM. At 6:00 pm McCarthy's office closes and you get an answering service. After 6:00 pm he came in he wandered thru the house going upstairs at first. I told him the unit was in the basement. I showed him the unit in the basement when he suggested it was too far from the compressor. It will work but eventually it will overwork the compressor and you will have to replace the compressor. He asked who installed the unit. I said McCarthy. He said there was nothing he could do the compressor had to be replaced. I said can't we try something. So he had me get a garden house out and spray the compressor with water. Which he said was too hot to run properly. It was cold to the touch to me. It had not run in a week. I could not believe it was hot. After running water on it for 15 minutes it still did not run. He told me I had to call it in. I suggested he speak to the office and tell them what was needed. He was agitated because of my questions about the distance and what he said about the installation. He left telling me to call the Office and tell them I needed a compressor. I had gone to the Trane website and read a section about whether it was installed or installed properly. The distance was longer than in the manual. The fixes were there. He was getting angry now. He told me people will say anything on the internet. It was probably a lie put there by a competitor. I said that was weird Trane would put lies on the website. He was gone by 6:20 pm. I called McCarthy's and got the answering service. I left a message saying the technician said I needed a compressor. The next day Saturday 6/2. I called about 9:00 am but it was too late to send a technician today because Manassas was far out and all the techs had been assigned. Yes they got the message from the technician that I needed a compressor. They would call on Monday and set up a time. About 1:00 PM Monday 6/4 I had not heard from them. So I called. I was told by they were ordering a part. Which was a lie. A straight up lie. Why lie to customers? Tuesday 6/5 I called and was told someone would get back to me to set up an appointment. They were busy with customers inside the beltway and Manassas was pretty far out. Wednesday 6/6 no call so I call. They will call me. Thursday 6/7 no call so I call. They are busy with people inside the Beltway and Manassas is so far out. They hope I understood and they will call me. On Monday 6/11 in the afternoon. I call a mutual friend of mine who knows the owner. After talking to my friend he said he would call the owner. I received a call from McCarthy Services in about 30 minutes. Wow, as in most things in life it is who you know. I was told by that person that they knew the problem was the compressor. That the truck will have the right parts when he came out on Wednesday 6/13. Wednesday 6/13, the "Lady of the house" was with me. I was getting a little angry. She offered to be there. Patrick shows up on time after about 15 minutes he says he has to go and get a part. He won't be long. About an hour later returning with a Taco Bell cup he goes down to the basement comes back up and says the part did not work. I ask about the Trane website and what they suggested. He looked at me first and then the "Lady of the house". And said, I don't do anything on the internet except look at pictures of naked women." We both laughed and he left. Why he was sent out. I have no idea. I think it was to appease some Boss. Is there an Old Man McCarthy who runs the firm? He did not have any parts. He did not take anything apart or inspect anything. Do they get paid more by Trane? It was under warranty. Once again I am told I need a compressor and I should call it in to the office so they can get someone way out here to Manassas as soon as possible. By now I had learned that they totally replace the unit. They do not replace compressors. I am a layman and learning as I go. Friday 6/15 I awake at 7:30 AM to find two McCarthy trucks. They go right to work. They are oddly very polite, overly polite compared to the last two. They replace the whole outside unit. It is working the house is cooling off. The older tech was chain smoking all the time he was there. Instead of putting the butts into an ashtray in the truck. He left 7 butts in a circular pile like a child's drawing of the sun. He sat in the truck door smoking and had rubbed out one by one in my parking space. They were done and gone by 10:00 am. The young tech did most of the work while the older guy smoked and made cell phone calls out front. Makes you wonder about the owner of McCarthy services. Does he know what his workers are doing? I was told numerous times a manager would call. No one ever called. No one has called to follow up on the unit. I was told by the phone staff someone would follow up. It has been 80 days.
Description of Work: Compressor went out on Trane A/C which was installed by McCarthy. Covered under warranty.

After looking at all the reviews on Angie's list plus getting estimates from other reputable companies, we decided on McCarthy. Why? He was HONEST and straight forth with us. He didn't try to sell us yet told us what was needed, why, how it would be done, etc. DETAILS in every aspectt of the job needed were provided which we loved ! The team that showed up were friendly and down to earth! They were so respectful of our house, laying protective covering on our carpets, wearing covers on their shoes, closing the front door as they entered and exited.. They were quick too! I would use them again in a heartbeat! In fact our friends around the corner had issues on July 3rd and MCCarthy came out that day and fixed it on the 4th. friends were amazed and the price was fair too!!! They were so pleased they said they'd use them again too!!!!
Description of Work: We needed a complete new ac unit and system because our unit died and yes right before ...days before the heatwave kicked in this summer!!!!!

It went well. I was pleased with everything. He was incredibly professional and explained everything to me.
Description of Work: Called originally to have a leaky tub fixed. The plumber came by and did a full walk through and explained all the things that we needed to do. Turns out we needed some more urgent work done and we had that done instead. The plumber was friendly, prompt, efficient, and professional. I was very pleased with his service. I would definitely recommend this service again for my plumbing needs.

They installed our a/c back in 2006 and we have an extended warranty and an annual maintenance contract with them. They came to do the maintenance and when they came out the service technician said the condenser coils in our a/c needed to be cleaned with an acid solution. I said ok, assuming that they knew what they were talking about, and he proceeded to soak the whole outside unit inside and out with the acid solution and it ended up taking the finish off all the metal, the casing that went around the unit, and it took the finish off the motor casing inside the unit; the whole unit looked bleached and faded because of this. I called them back, complained about this, and I've been complaining to them for a few weeks. They sent another guy back and I never heard back from him, called them after this and they had no record of that guy coming out. They asked me to send pictures of the unit which I have done. I have been trying to get in touch with them since. I have been doing research online and talked to someone with a customer service rep from Trane and I was told they were not supposed to use the acid solution but something called Simple Green. We have a warranty on parts and labor until 2016. After doing all of the research and talking with the Trane representative I would like a new a/c since McCarthy was not suppose to do what they did in the first place.

So as one can imagine, part of our old HVAC system packed up on the fourth of July of all days eh!? lol! As the HVAC system is old, this is precisely why we agreed to sign up with McCarthy and paid the yearly service membership so that we could get the discount on parts and also get service from them immediately when needed rather that when they can get to us and put us in line. Please note that in the past week we have had a heatwave in the MD / DC/ VA area, so temperatures outside were 100 degrees and above. So I called the emergency number in the morning and got through to someone, after taking my details, she tells me a HVAC tech would call me shortly. I recall noting it seemed odd, why I needed the tech to call rather than just tell me when he / she would show up. Half the day passed, and no word from them (neither the emergency office or tech) so I called again probably about mid day. early afternoon. Now a different person, who told me essentially the same thing, a tech would call me... What!!!!??? Did I mention it was 100 degrees outside and close to that inside! Still no one called! So I called again towards the evening, and got a different person again. This time I specifically asked, WHY am I expecting a call from a tech and not getting an appointment or even an approximate time on when he will either call or come to look at the unit. It was like talking to a robot, same answer, the tech would CALL!!! Yes the robot was not unpleasant, BUT when you are sweating through 100 degree heat, even a pleasant voice cannot sooth one's anger. So in summary, three calls to them and no an inch closer to in anyway solving my problem, so by the end of the day I had resolved I was absolutely done with them and would never call them again. What is the use of having a yearly agreement / subscription if you cannot get service on the day you need it in an emergency? Making matters worse, it was not like they said, "sorry, we are backed up due to the heatwave, we apologize that we cannot get to you right now, but will do so as soon as possible"... nope not even that. What upset me the MOST was the next day, they started NOW calling the house, but this p***** me off even more, why? The message left was something like: "oh, yes we know you called for service yesterday, if you still have that problem, and want us to come out, please give us a call..." what the heck!!! So after 3 calls, a whole day and sleepless night in high heat, rather than send the tech ASAP to see if the problem had been resolved, they wanted me to call AGAIN!!! I am sure only to tell me that "a tech will call me". No thank you! No, I don't need to pay for that kind of bad service. I had already had one unpleasant experience with them and at the time, I assumed it was just a bad feeling or the tech, as on another occasion the tech that came out was quite good. But after this, I am done. What was worse, was I DID have other sources I could call, as I am in the construction industry myself, but thinking I had a good service deal in place I did not bother. Of course I did have to call them in eventually due to the no show from McCarthy. Due to their non response, we spent FOUR days and nights with no air-conditioning in the house in over 100 degree heat when this could easily have been avoided. I sadly cannot now recommend them to anyone.

The second serviceman was very knowledgeable. The first one missed a couple of things. But the second one caught everything, and was able to fix it to my satisfaction. This particular guy went out of his way to take care of some problems that he really didn’t have to do. Their price is average.
Description of Work: I use McCarthy Svc for heating and air conditioning. The last time I used them was for my heat pump.

McCarthy Services checked out our air conditioning unit, which was clearly not putting out much cold air. A competitor was just here a couple weeks ago and declared everything working fine. The McCarthy technician said we could fix the unit for $500 or replace the over-15 year old unit for $4500. We went with option B, and this is the amazing part, they replaced it THAT DAY!!!! And we didn't even ask, thinking that it would take at least a week to fit us into the schedule and get parts. Very professional all around, and we highly recommend them.

Was one of five quotes obtained. Did not recommended top of the line like other companies, which would have cost another $2000. Provided a quote on the spot and was able to do the work within 1 week from committing.
Description of Work: Replaced AC and heater completely. Recommended a Trane unit of medium efficiency. Operates well - quiet and well balanced across a three-story townhouse. Listened to our concern about "noise" and even included post the original estimate work at no cost to line the ducting for noise reduction.

My dog went crazy when the rep went out to his truck to get something. I did not let him in again after that. I also discovered 4 necklaces missing from my jewelry rack, but since I had three other vendors in the house, I couldn't be sure it was this guy. Just had a really uneasy feeling about him. He was a little overly confident and pushy, too.

It went great. I called on Friday hoping to get fixed and they sent someone out on Saturday morning to fix. They were very prompt. The plumber (Russell Furr) was very professional. He made sure it was fixed right (the pipe kept cracking) requiring him to spend extra time to fix. He was prompt and quickly finished the job.
Description of Work: They fixed a leaky drain under my kitchen sink. The copper pipe (old house) had cracked and was leaking.

I was a real pain in the A#@ with this project. However, these guys (in particular Dan McCarthy) were great. We went through several contractors trying to identify the right system and right contractor. Most sent over a sales guy and in the end just wasted my time or came in with some rediculous quote. Dan sent over his guy. He had simply no idea how to do what we wanted. The difference is this guy says, "This is beyond me, let me get my owner over here." I appreciate that he acknoledged his limitations and called in the right folks for the job. Dan came over the next day on time. He told me that what we wanted could be done, but not likely the best idea. He proposed alternavite solutions and we reached an agreement. He actually tried to sell me less expensive equipment, but in discussing the pros and cons I opted to get the best stuff available from Trane. In the middle of all this, I told Dan that we were having a sump pump put in. I told him to get on board and do it as well. We initially requested french drains with this, but being from New Orleans, I have no idea what a sump pump or french drains are. He advised me through this as well and actually sold me on less. Again, Dan went out of his way to save me money when he could have easily went on his merry way screwing me over just like I asked. His crew was great, punctual and courteous, particularly his A/C install guy. I think his name is David. After I get my basement cleaned up from all this work, I plan to have them over for regular service contract and a beer. Also, I screwed up the payment as I was transferring money from one bank to another, and delayed the payment for which I felt very guilty. They did not utter one negative word. Bottome line, I would definately use Dan and his crew again.

They told me that my heat exchange was cracked, but my husband didn't but it. The owner of the company sent out his right hand man, who said it was not cracked. I was not impressed. The overall experience was poor. I would say their price is competitive. The quality of work was poor. I would not use this company again.
