I was told I needed to replace my A/C (8K) with the claim of high cost to repair. I got a second opinion and it was a 99 cent fuse. I have heard HVAC repair techs now get a commission on sales, this to me is a huge conflict of interest. Very disappointed. I was called everyday asking if I was ready to move forward with replacement. I asked for a phone call when I found out it was only a fuse, and the calls stopped and no one has called me. This truly says something about a company.

They reached out first to me first and came out the same day. They came out twice and the second guy was great but when they were out for service they couldn't find the cartridges to fit the knobs. I let him know I would be fine with changing out the faucet for the tub which I wish they would have done sooner. I ended up paying twice what I planned on and had to work from home longer than anticipated plus had to take a half a day off because it took longer than anticipated.
Description of Work: About a week ago, the hot water pressure in our basement shower dropped dramatically. We have tried percussive maintenance on the pipe thinking that it may be an air pocket. This did not resolve the problem. We also tried turning off the water heater, cleaning the pipe and then re pressurizing, but that did not work either. We get just enough hot water to shower with, but only because we have a fairly high pressure shower head.

The project was a nightmare - for the plumber. The work required was far beyond what was reasonably expected. Things went wrong. Throughout, though, the plumber tackled the job carefully, remained cheerful and polite throughout, and got the job done. The house, and therefore the valve, is about 70 years old, and the valve was stuck. At each step of placing new valve, he tested. There were parts failures, eventually requiring one or more trips to obtain another valve. For the final try, he called in reinforcements (the owner of the firm, I think). They got the job done, for the original contracted price. I will definitely use this firm again, the next time I need services they provide. Note: there is a note on their listing saying they did not show Angie's List licenses in Maryland or DC. Fortunately, we and they are in Virginia.

Folks, avoid if you can. these guys are very polite but don't want to take care of you. it has been so frustrating to deal with them. they installed a new HAVC unit for me last November. This April I started to use the AC. a few weeks later when I got down to the basement, there was water all over the place where the unit sit! it turns out they didn't seal the water trap properly when install the unit and condensation water leaked. there was water inside the blower, underneath the unit, with so much dirt it turned into mud like things. I called, a guy just came to seal the water trap but didn't do anything about the water damage. plus, they didn't install the unit properly. my previous unit has a base that raise it above the ground level so the water wouldn't get inside the unit. They didn't do that, they took a shortcut and directly put the unit in the little pit below ground level, which results in collection of water inside the unit. The guy said it is too late today and they will come back to fix the water damage. so I scheduled another time, I waited at home the whole time and they didnt' show up, not even called! so I scheduled a second time, a third time and a fourth time!!! everytime they just say sorry, we will have to re-schedule! if you want to waste your time and money and probably cause damage to your house, hire them!

First, I will start this terrible review by saying that the service technicians who came to my house were very professional and knowledgable. I have no complaints with them, I give them high remarks, all "A's". My complaint (and the "F" rating) is with the company managers. I have called at least 5 times, asking to find out why they installed a rusty old vent on my brand new system that cost thousands and thousands of dollars and that I would like a copy of my registration. No one has had the courtesy to call me back regarding this issue. And, I know the installation manager has gotten my messages because the nice man who answers the phone has told me so. McCarthy's "hold" music says 'if you are not completely satisfied with the work received, then you are eligible for a refund.' Well, I am NOT SATISFIED AT ALL and would like a refund.

Wow. This was the best plumbing company I have ever encountered. Adam came at midnight when my toilet was spewing water all over my upstairs and fixed the problem temporarily until we could get a new toilet the next day. Then he came back in a snowstorm with a new toilet, and when my property manager wouldn't approve the installation, he was so understanding and didn't charge me for my time. What an amazing experience. So ethical. On time. Professional. Great communication. I would recommend this company to anyone and hope they get a lot more business thanks to this review. I’m still waiting. Since they were purchased by ARS they have gone down hill. I was originally very pleased with this company, not any longer. Because I’m under warranty I’m the last one to get service. They out and out lie about when they will schedule you. Their favorite word is should. Even though I’m under warranty I’m looking for a new maintenance company. They said they will make it right. When I asked how......NO ANSWER. Only use them if you are paying through the nose for emergency service.......under warranty.......forget about it, you don’t count.

I am highly disappointed in McCarthy. They have left me high and dry. I contacted them to ask if they could send someone out to unclog a downspout and underground pipe that moves water away from my house. I called on Monday afternoon, received a call back that went to my voicemail on Monday evening. First thing on Tuesday morning, I called them again and explained the service I needed. The person on the phone took my information, checked with a manager to confirm that this was work they could do, and set an appointment for me between 2 and 6 pm today (Tuesday). I was very relieved because we have substantial rain coming this week with hurricane Florence. It is now 5:45 pm. I just received a call from McCarthy stating that the plumbing manager looked at the calls they have remaining for the day and they wanted to let me know that the service I need is not something they can provide. That they do not, in fact work on outside pipes. I have lost an entire day, and it is now too late to call another company until tomorrow. How did it take an entire day for this company to figure out whether they provide the service I asked for??

I would not recommend this company at all. I purchased a new unit in December and have had 5 service calls since this time. My heat stopped working this winter, which resulted in a part needing to be replaced in this brand new unit. My AC has now stopped working three separate times this summer and each time the tech assured me it was fixed, yet it's still 80 degrees inside. I have attempted to speak with a manager on three different occasions and was told each time they were in a meeting and would call me back, I am still waiting. Apparently, a part has been ordered for my unit in order to restore my AC but no one is able to schedule a follow-up appointment and today told me the notes say it was installed already. I cannot explain the amount of frustration I have with McCarthy Services and am impressed by the lack of courtesy and professionalism their company lacks. I strongly recommend to not use McCarthy Services, you will be greatly disappointed. I have spent countless hours on the phone as well as time spent waiting for technicians or supervisors to return my calls. The HVAC unit is clearly a lemon or the technicians have zero skill at diagnosing/correcting problems. Either way, McCarthy Services is not a company you can trust.

It didn't. While I cannot speak to McCarthy Services as a whole, I would be wary of dealing with one of their sales staff named "Emilio Gonzalez". Very friendly guy, but he seemed very desperate for the sale. First impression? Very much like a "I'm your BEST buddy" car salesman with all his small talk. I told him that I was shopping around and that I was getting quotes from several contractors. He indicated that he preferred not to give me a quote until all the OTHER quotes had come in. He said something about inventory fluctuations and deals that his company has at any given time, would change his ability to give me a competitive quote. Hence. he wanted to wait. So, I decided I would "play the game" with him. Who knows, maybe I'd still get a decent system with good service. When I got all the other quotes, I contacted him again. He responded and said, "If you don't mind, can you show me what they sent you in terms of model numbers? I don't need the prices. Just want to make sure we are comparing Apple's to apples." Interestingly enough, NONE of the other contractors asked for any such thing. I responded and gave him the systems/models I was considering. He then emailed me to request that I call him. I emailed him back and asked him if there was a problem. He responded via email and indicated he would explain to me when I called. He seemed reluctant to put anything in writing about whatever it was. So I called him back around 6-7 pm during the day. When he answered, he sounded half asleep. He seemed a little fuzzy of who I was after I had initially identified myself. He finally had the ah-ha moment and said, "Yes yes, I know you." He told me that the other contractors had quoted me a system that was entirely too big for home. I found that odd, given they all quoted almost identical systems (e.g. ac unit tonnage/furnace BTUs) save for maybe the brand. So he offered to work up a quote with a smaller heating BTU footprint. He said he'd get that to me as soon as he got home, as he was driving. That seemed strange given how sleepy and incoherent he initially sounded on the phone. Interestingly enough he had the quote to me literally 15-20 minutes later (must have been a quick drive). After that exchange, I contacted the other contractors the next day and expressed Emilio's concern as if it were my own. They all politely explained to me that the "short-cycling" and air-mixing issue (that Emilio originally suggested) was a non-issue and that they'd rather error on the side of leaving a home with a little more heating capacity than necessary; we are talking a 10,000 BTU difference between systems that Emilio was suggesting was a problem. The other contractors didn't question me, ask when I would make a decision, pressure me, or ask about any other quote from anyone else. They all expressed the same thing: "If you have any other questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out." - Very professional and low key. Emilio finally got back to me with a quote: It was a 5-line email with the model number of the 1) AC unit, 2) Furnace unit, 3) Coil, 4) Thermostat, and 5) and Warranty info. No line by line breakdown on what specific parts & labor outside of what was just mentioned above. No formal contract proposal or anything. Furthermore, he came in with the second most expensive quote with a slightly lower capacity system. Based upon all of this, I decided NOT to go with McCarthy Services. I contacted all of the HVAC contractors I decided not to go with (including McCarthy), explained to them I had chosen someone else and thanked them for their time and trouble of coming out to inspect my place and give me a quote. All of them EXCEPT Emilio/McCarthy Services, responded and essentially communicated the message, "Thank you. Tell us if we can further help you in the future for your HVAC needs or if you change your mind". Further confirmation that I made the right decision in staying away from Emilio/McCarthy Services. If this is how McCarthy Services employees conduct themselves professionally, I would stay away from this company and shame on Angie's List for even listing them! If however, this is just Emilio, then as I stated in the beginning....STAY AWAY from this guy! I got a very strong impression and sense he was dishonest in some way. Given that McCarthy Services is on Angie's List to begin with, I'm inclined to believe that this is more an issue with the employee rather than the company itself. After all, you'll find a bad apple in every barrel.

The installation of the new boiler and pipes was very timely once we agreed to the contract. The crew came in the morning and worked until late (around 9:00 pm) to complete what was estimated to be a 2-day job in a single day. I think the pricing was fair, but not inexpensive based on other research. They gave us a pretty high estimate and then reduced it for various items, including “if you sign today.” Though not a fan of that tactic, we thought the extra money we might save by shopping around wasn’t worth the inconvenience of shopping around. As for all else - responsiveness, timeliness, cleanliness and overall hard work, they were excellent, and we would consider using them again.

It was kind of like the twilight zone. We installed a Nest several months ago and everything was fine when we were using the heat but problems started when we switched to AC. The unit was still blowing hot air. My husband and I tried to fix the issue but when we couldn't called McCarthy since they were listed as being an authorized Nest installer. When we first had them out a couple weeks ago it took them three tries to actually get out. The first day they said they were coming out 4-8; at 11 pm we finally got a call from the technician saying he was on his way. We cancelled that appointment and asked McCarthy to come out the next day - again from 4-8 pm. They agreed but didn't show - we didn't even get a phone call. So I called back the next day and asked them to come the following day. We got a 12-4 window. The technician finally showed up at about 7 pm. He said he fixed it, and he did fix the upstairs unit, but a couple days ago we found that the downstairs unit was still blowing hot air when the AC was on. So I figured I would call them out to make it right, although I was losing patience. Another technician came out and said that he couldn't fix it and he thought some switch valve was malfunctioning, which McCarthy would happily give me an estimate on replacing. McCarthy called me later asking when they could come out and give me an estimate - I told them I would call them - they should not call me back. Yesterday evening, before I had another company come out, I fixed the problem myself by Googling the issue - it is a very simple fix involving adjusting the Nest settings and took me 5 seconds. I'm not quite sure why I didn't do this in the first place, but an "authorized Nest installer" certainly should have been able to do this. Instead they tried to sell us something we did not need at all.

McCarthy installed Trane system several years ago. I've had nothing but trouble with getting competent or reliable service ever since. In 2017 they had to come out four times to fix the same problem, which turned out to be relatively straightforward to diagnose and repair. This week, the air conditioning went out. Understandably (with the temps being unseasonably high), they were pretty busy. However, I got an appointment for today, between the hours of 2:00-6:00 p.m. with a call 30 minutes before arrival. 6:00 came and went with no call; I had to call only to learn that the tech was busy. That too is understandable, but why no call to either advise of delay or to reschedule? I cancelled the appointment. This experience is typical of what I've put up with for eight years. Enough is enough. I signed up with another local company with a MUCH better rating and I'm confident that I am finally on the right track. Little surprise that AL as dropped these clowns.

Contacted McCarthy to snake a basement drain that was backing up to use a provided coupon; a $99 job. Scheduled a weekday visit with a four hour window from 8AM to 12PM. On the day fo the job at 11:20 AM received a call that the technician that he was on his way. By 2PM, nothing heard. After a call to dispatch and a 15 minute wait only to be told they had no idea of any status I shifted the appointment to the following day. Without any prior call, as was indicated, a technician showed at 10AM only to indicate the camera-visual/drain snake could only be accomplished on the 4" pipe and that he could do the other smaller line at for 50% more - heck of an up-sell. I can tolerate one late run however; this three and the problem remains. McCarthy your service, attention to detail and scheduling has degraded below a professional level.

The installation of our new system went well which was Nov. 2017. The heating function worked fine all winter but the problems began when we needed to turn on the AC on those unusually warm days we have had starting in January. We placed a service call as the upstairs was 77 degrees and would not cool down. Service tech came and said our filter was dirty, replaced it and said he tested it and it should work fine. It didn't. Next hot day several weeks later, same issue. Same tech came and wasn't sure what was wrong... finally decided that the pressure was low and we needed some part, said the office would call and schedule the install. Never heard from them. Another hot day, called and asked for the service manager to come out because the tech they kept sending didn't seem to be very knowledgeable. Service manager came out and said that since we had the system installed in Nov, it wasn't warm enough outside to optimize our system coolant, therefore the AC would not work. Said it had to be at least 72+ outside in order to perform this function and he would contact me on the first warm day in order to get this fixed and if I didn't hear from him he would come out whatever day I needed him to in order to fix our AC. Never heard back from him... hot day last several days and upper level really warm, called service manager and asked him to come out today. Said he was too busy but he would send out a tech. I asked him to please have the tech fill in for him and asked him to come out and solve my problem that is supposedly weather dependent and fix my system that has not worked at all for 6 months. He said he couldn't. WHAT KIND OF SERVICE IS THIS??? Do NOT purchase a system from this company because you will NEVER get any follow up service.

Outstanding installation and good pricing for Carrier HVAC (Heat Pump) system replacement. Salesman was prompt and thorough, although he did not provide us any brochures, booklets, etc. Installer was courteous, experienced, knowledgeable, and professional. Took the time to ensure system was thoroughly operational, confirmed electrical requirements and changed breakers accordingly, cleaned up all debris, and explained operation to us. However, since he was new to McCarthy's, he did not have any installation or service stickers or other company material. The sales representative had promised the following to us, included in sales/order form: one year free service, service information and schedule, copy of registration with Carrier. Three months later, we have not received any communication or follow up from McCarthy's -- despite our calling, texting and emailing the sales rep and office. This is our primary concern: the lack of follow up and poor responsiveness.

See above comments. I have discontinued my service contract with McCarthy after 12 years. The company has gone completely downhill in the last couple of years.
Description of Work: I have had McCarthy Services do all of the HVAC work and maintenance on my home since 2005. As of today, I am terminating that relationship. This company has gone completely downhill in the last couple of years. Last year, a technician flat-out lied to me about a freon leak that didn’t even exist. I got the situation corrected only after a long and frustrating process with a very unresponsive management team. I reluctantly stayed with McCarthy, but today was the last straw. I called for my semi-annual service appointment, and was told that McCarthy is in the process of discontinuing service in DC. Yet they have continued to charge me on a monthly basis for my service contract, indeed as recently as this week. I have had it and cancelled my contract with McCarthy. They are basically committing fraud. This was once a very good company but it has really fallen into a shambles. Avoid them.

We get their preventive maintenance, but I have their annual plan for service. There was a wear and tear part. They replaced a capacitor and there was a heat pump, they took care of that. The unit they installed about two years ago.
