After waitin 2 days for a call back from another plumber, I gave up and called this company. Service person was very nice, they set up the appointment for the next day. Plumber arrived within specified time and service dept called to say plumber on his way. Plumber was very nice and seemed knowledgeable. We discussed upgrading to a 50 gallon tank but there was no pressure from him. While he drained the tank and made preperations, another worker delivered the new tank. All was complete in about 2 hours and I had a working water heater again. Job well done.

It was so quick that there isn't much to tell. They fixed the disposal within 5 minutes of arriving and were gone shortly after that!
Description of Work: I had a jammed garbage disposal and backed up drain in my kitchen. They came out and fixed the problem very quickly, and also provided some expert tips on how to better maintain the garbage disposal going forward.

They are the best. Another company tried to fix our problem but they used a cheap pipe that turned our water colors, so RJ Tilley fixed that job. I don’t remember what I spent, but it was very reasonable. It didn’t cost as much as I thought it would, they showed up on time, and we haven’t had a problem since. I have had emergency plumbing in the past but it has never been as good an experience as what I had with RJ Tilley. I will be using them from now on. The man that came was dressed nicely and the workmanship was excellent.

The entire design and selection process was very well informed and they spent a lot of time with us as we made selections and decisions on timing. All of the timeline was as expected and there were no issues as we went along the timeline. Expenses were well disclosed up front and the overall experience was great. We are still enjoying the fruits of the remodel and love the way it turned out.
Description of Work: RJ Tilley performed work for a remodel installation phase of the project we did to remodel our kitchen. We performed our own tear down and site preparation. RJ Tilley helped plan the design, source the cabinets, granite counters, and replacement appliances. After the installs were complete, they also performed the sink connection and plumbing.

Our hot water heater sprung a leak. I isolated the water supply and called RJ Tilley. They showed up within a few hours and for a fixed price, removed and disposed of the old hot water heater and installed a comparable model. Quick and efficient and for the price they quoted. Can't beat it.

The plumbing on my upper level was backing up. . .toilets and shower. I emailed a request for service on a Sunday night. On Monday a.m., before office hours, I received a call from the service manager to schedule an appointment. The technician came in the late morning, did some trouble-shooting and resolved the problem within about an hour. He was extremely professional and very personable.
Description of Work: Inside pipes were clogged. Needed more than ordinary snake. Technician used the "1-man" snake (vs. largest "2-man" snake.).

Parts grossly overpriced. Parts price tripled. Technician did not give estimate or prices before beginning work. My fault for not getting estimate up front. Customers using Tilley's -Get estimate up front. Felt that technician overdramatized seriousness of problem by leaving water on while doing repairs, thusly spewing water all over the sink and floor. Plumbing 101 - turn water off before making repairs. Brand new shower head was either defective, or damanaged during installation. Shower head leaked after installation. Had to ask technician to uninstall due to leak. Fortunatey I was able to return product to Bed, Bath and Beyond for a full refund. Installed new showerhead myself - No leaks. I plan to remodel kitchen, bath, new floors. Will not use R.J. Tilley. Can't afford prices.

I have read your comments and reviewed your service work order. I have looked at the cost of material and feel these charges are very much in line. We used a quality Delta lavatory faucet and the stainless anti burst supplies that are being required by a lot of homeowner's insurance companies. You were given our service rates when you placed the call. The showerhead was defective out of the box. We did not supply the showerhead. We can not be responsible for customer furnished products. Our company provides Quality products and Quality service. We take great pride in both. We do appreciate your comments. If you have other questions or we can be of further assistance please call. I heard nothing from my tenant, and checking my card charges found no debits. At the end of that week I contacted the tenant who said the work had been done. But when pressing on the work I found that the pop up assembly was NOT installed. Additionally the credit card was not charged, but an invoice left at the house. The bill was paid by check at the office, but on a Saturday, so that Cindy was not in. I left a note with the payment that I believed the pop up assembly had been overlooked. No response to date. The check has now cleared the bank. I would use them again, but nail down what was to be done. It is possible that there was a miscommunication. But I was not contacted. UPDATE Within two/three days i was contacted by the company. I understand from talking with the company that the transmission of the request for a pop up assembly was NOT conveyed to the technician making the original service call. A second service call and installation of the requested pop up assembly was done and at no charge to me. To say that the pop up assembly was working and in good repair is false. The drain assembly had been missing for months and the top of the rod controlling the linkage was missing - hence my request for replacement. Something can not be working and in good repair if it isn't there.
Description of Work: A tenant's sink was clogged and a pop up assembly needed replacement. After trying to "do it myself' I came up with a bent snake and still had a clogged sink. After checking Angie's List RJ Tilley was close and recommended. I called and talked with "Cindy" and, I believe, asked for 1) a new pop up assembly to be installed, and 2) clear the clog. To pay for the work a credit card number was left and I was told the plumber would be there the next day.

Thank you for your comments. Our service technician did unstop your drain. The paperwork left for you was not an invoice. It was a copy of the work order. Your credit card had been charged. When we received your check a credit was applied to your credit card. The pop up assembly was not replaced because our plumber checked the pop up in the room with the clog and it was working and in good repair. I'm sorry for the miscommunication. We have returned to replace the pop up assembly in the other bathroom at no charge to you. We apologize for any inconvenience.

They were on Angie’s List. The work started in January and we kept having final things that were never final. Initially, things went well, but there were some things with which we weren’t real happy. We paid them somewhere between $70000 and $80000. We bought a house that needed a lot of work. It had been foreclosed and stripped. It needed new bathrooms and it was pretty apparent what needed to be done. We had the usual inspections like the termite inspection and the home inspection. Tilley went over the house. What we found was that it needed a new kitchen, wallpapering, paint and so on and so forth. We then found rot underneath the master bedroom shower. Mr. Tilley died and the person who was here was his son-in-law. He said that the kind of rot underneath the house was expected with the kind of shower we had. It would have been useful if they found it before we bought the house or they could have at least told us about it. We could have engaged somebody to do better planning than we did in replacing the shower, but we were in a hurry. They also had other jobs scheduled later. There was also a door with a similar situation where if anybody had gone under the house and looked, we might have found this. All the people who went under there didn’t find either one of those. So, the repairs are still ongoing. Tilley opted not to do the door. It was a sunroom door and I understand why because it has been very difficult to get it done. We are still not finished with it, but we think we found somebody to order the door and to do the repair work. I think the master bathroom is okay although we are still not living out there since we are still in Norfolk. Things that shouldn’t have happened did happen. There was only one intact bathroom in the whole place and it wound up with a big chip out of the bathtub and that was pretty annoying. I don’t have a clue as to who did it. There were various subcontractors who performed beautifully all though the painters painted things that weren’t supposed to be painted. They ripped wallpaper that shouldn’t have been ripped. We could have lived with it for a while until we decided what we wanted to do with it. We are now in the process of stripping wallpaper because they took big chunks out of the middle of things. That was also one of those things that shouldn’t have happened. Tilley was the general contractor and it’s not just heating and plumbing. He talked about what I wanted in the kitchen and had some preconceived ideas. When you are the client, you expect your preconceived ideas. There were things that kind of irritated me. The kitchen was stripped down to bare walls. I ordered countertops that didn’t have the backsplash on them because I wanted to do something else. So, the countertops just went in without a backsplash. I went in and there was about half an inch gap. So, I looked at them and asked them if they had used the level or not. Eventually, they did some repair work. There were other things that I didn’t want over the stove. They did fuss with me and I don’t like microwave over the range. I find that awkward and it’s also dangerous. There were unpleasant little things like that. I won the battle and there is no microwave over the cooktop, but there is a piece of stainless steel covering the bottom of the cabinet now. Finally, there was one door that was missing and the door never got finished right. We finally said that we would do it. The subcontractors did do a good job. We had some hardwood floors put in and the existing hardwood was refinished at the same time. The painters did an excellent job. It was just the messing around with the wallpaper that they thought they were going to strip. They just took off what they wanted as they went by and that was pretty annoying. I thought we had a grip on that where we didn’t want to take the paper down. There is now a big patch missing where they took off the wallpaper. That’s the kind of stuff that went on and that should have been handled by the general contractor’s supervisor. All in all Tilley Plumbing & Heating Inc. got paid in a timely manner and in fact, got overpaid. They did refund our money pretty promptly. They were overpaid about $20000. The bank issued it to them when it shouldn’t have and they accepted it. I would recommend them only if I am closer and if I can supervise. We also needed a little more time. The whole thing got compressed. However, Tilley Plumbing & Heating was pretty sure that they could do the job and of course jobs were pretty scarce last year. So, they were pretty pleased to have it and I understood that. They were pretty good about cleaning up, but it got pretty sloppy towards the end. It wasn’t as good as I had hoped. We also told them to use the bathroom that worked, but it got pretty gross in there a couple of times and it was my job to clean it. I wasn’t sure if that was particularly appropriate either. However, that wasn’t a big problem. I am not moving into that house until we can lock it up. The biggest problem is with the sunroom door since it really can’t be closed. I am sure it’s a perfectly fine neighborhood, but I haven’t lived there. I have dogs. So, I don’t want anybody to come along and open the door and let my dogs out. The designer who worked for Tilley was very good, but the upstairs carpets in the house were soaked with cat urine and the designer was allergic to cats. So, she couldn’t even go out there and that made life difficult also. She is a pretty good designer and I couldn’t have the benefits of her expertise, but that was unfortunate. Overall, Tilley Plumbing & Heating was pretty average in my opinion and there was nothing exceptional. A couple of the subcontractors were excellent. The price was also average. Sometimes, a contractor-client relationship kind of starts off really good and then kind of slides downhill. After fussing with them, they used to respond and did things that needed to be done. When it comes to their punctuality, they turned up when they said they were going to. Tilley also managed to get the skylight out since we thought it was leaking and the roofer did a great job. However, I wouldn’t hire them again in the future.

Response from R J Tilley Plumbing & Heating Inc
This project was a foreclosed home that had areas that were gutted. We were asked to remodel some areas and the homeowner chose to do the rest of the work. After we completed our contract the homeowner still had a lot to be completed. The homeowner had a home inspection done. We asked for a copy and homeowner declined. Homeowner walked through the house and showed us the areas of work we were to perform. We did make suggestions such as replacing the shower and floor in the master bath but the homeowner declined at that time. Later the homeowner opted to replace the floor and we found floor damage at the shower. Instead of repair the homeowner decided to replace the shower and make it larger. When RJT remodels a project we meet with our client in our showroom to make selections on material and to make layout options that meet the needs of the client. We respect our client's decisions to accept any options and changes. We also review our proposal line by line in our showroom. If changes are made we review them again. We have a supervisor to oversee the project daily. At the end of the project he will perform a check list to make sure our work is complete. We also do a walk through with the client and in this case the bank also did a walk through. All were satisfied with the work. We were originally asked to remove all the wallpaper and paint all areas. It was in rough shape. To stay on budget the homeowner decided to do everything himself except the master bath and kitchen. We did remove the master bedroom paper by mistake. Our painter prepped the walls and painted the room at no charge to the client. The painter also painted the pantry walls at no charge. The original walls in the kitchen were not square and there were gaps in the countertop. We were going to replace the top however the homeowner and supervisor came up with a solution to solve the issue and the top looks great. I have again offered to replace the top and again the homeowner declined. Unfortunately the tub in a room we were not working in was chipped. We had the tub repaired at no charge. The back door to the sunroom needed a broken threshold repaired. After further investigation we found it was rotted and the floor under the door was bad also. We suggested replacing the door and the client declined. Their bank was never invoiced by us. The payment schedule was preplanned by the bank and accepted by us. We did receive an overpayment made out to us. It was put in our account because it was made to us. We promptly made out our own check to our client. We take pride in our work. After all the checking and walk throughs we encourage our clients to call us with any issues we may have overlooked. We always gladly return to make it right for our customer. We are a local and family owned business with a fully trained and skilled staff who also cares about our customers and their own workmanship. Our contract was completed in early May. The homeowner has stated that their portion of the work should be completed by the end of the year. They have a lot of work to do but the home will be beautiful when it is completed. Our best wishes to the member's family.

I called to request an estimate on remodeling 2.5 bathrooms. We were looking to totally redo the bathrooms and were interested in a quote for all of the work and just tile work (I can demo and prep). When on the phone they indicated that a shower would cost $6,000. Really, $6,000 to tile a shower that you have not seen? I indicated that this was a ridiculous number. They further suggested that we would be looking at about $15,000 for one bathroom. It was a shame, I felt like they did not even want to come and provide an estimate once they saw exactly what I wanted to be completed.

Member, Thank you for your comments. We regret the handling of this matter. We do not have a record of your call. If you will visit our website under Remodeling/Service you will see our process from the first call to completion. We do not offer a quote on the phone without first coming to visit the jobsite, talking to the client about their budget and reviewing the wishes of the client. Bathroom and kitchen renovations can range in cost depending on the materials and extent of the project. Any ballpark figure on the phone may have been in reply to your comments about your particular needs but in no way represented a quote for your job. I regret any misunderstanding and assure you that we are always interested in working with clients within their budget range. We have many clients who do their own demo work and we are very happy to work with them. We are always interested in your comments and concerns. We study each comment to insure we are offering the best service to our clients. We do not have your phone number but if you have further concerns please call me anytime. Judy Tilley

It did not go anywhere as I was totally ignored!!!
Description of Work: June 23, 2011 - Sent an e-mail request for an estimate via Angie's List to this company, summarizing the work that I need to have done. As of June 29, 2011, at 10:36 AM I have yet to receive a response. June 28, 2011, I placed a call around 9:15 AM and spoke to a person who said she was a designer. I explained that I needed an estimate and again described the work I needed done. She took my name and phone number and said someone would get back to me on setting up an appointment for an estimate. It is now June 29, 2011, over 24 hours since I called, and I have yet to hear anything back. In both cases I indicated that I had a fixed amount to spend and needed the estimate to determine what I could have done out of the the things I needed. I do not know if this statement had any impact on my thus far being ignored or not, but I find it difficult to believe that someone did not have the time to at least call back. Their TV advertisement that no job is too big, or small, does not seem to apply here.

It was quite simple and they did it quite quickly. They are a larger company that does plumbing, electrical, remodel work and that kind of stuff. They came out and did it fine, they were honest and it was a simple fix we just weren't sure about. They didn't try to gauge anything, it was a simple fix. It was $80 to come out to the house and the total was $20. It was their time and minimal charges, they didn't try to bump it up. They were on time, very honest, gave me all the information about what was wrong with it and did a good job.

Received reply email and phone call after I submitted inquiry here. They made prompt arrangements to come out and do the work. The plumber came out, attended to the list he had and communicated the fixes. He left, only to return, after hearing trom the dispatcher that he missed several items. After a rocky first time with them, each subsequent visit has been very good. We will continue to use Tilley for our plumbing needs.

Since I had heard so many good things about R.J. Tilley and they have been in Richmond so long, I was really disappointed when I tried to use them for the first time. I do not plan on calling them again.
Description of Work: Called them regarding a water leak in my front yard. They sent someone out quickly. He was pleasant and tried to be helpful, but I felt that he could not or would not do anything before Monday at the earliest. He talked about having to get Miss Utility out to mark underground lines etc. before digging. I assured him that all other utility lines entered the property from the side or back of the house and that I would sign a waver, but he called his boss who said no. He wanted to sell me on the idea of replacing the entire line, about 50' from the meter to the house for several thousand dollars, even though he had not put a shovel in the ground to see exactly what the problem was. It was Friday afternoon and I really believe that he did not want to get involved. Since I needed someone to fix the problem Friday or Saturday, I paid a trip charge and got someone else who did the job that afternoon for about $200.

They were great. The kitchen faucet was leaking and the fixture type and finish that I wanted was expensive. I had the nickel finish and the kind where the faucet becomes a hand held sprayer from Delta Faucets. They are very prompt and they come right away. As soon as they know the situation they call the company and somebody else from the company brings to the house whatever the part that they need and they continue disassembling or whatever they need to do or what work they can do while they wait for the part to arrive without wastage of time. The job is well done. It is an average price. Nothing had to be redone. They are very quick. We have used them in the past and we will continue to use them in the future.

I spent around $112 on that work. They came in, did a good job and left. It was a 3 or 4 day wait and I did not expect it to be quick.
Description of Work: I used RJ Tilley Plumbing & Heating Inc. in May of last year to put a gas line for the dryer.
