It turned out just fine including the price. The guy was excellent and I remember him more a little bit than the younger one who worked with him. We really appreciate the work. I think they have to rearrange their schedules because of their other works but they showed up when the said they would show up.

The contractor cancelled two scheduled appointments -- days that I had taken off from work. The second time he was scheduled to arrive at 7:00 AM and I got an email from him at 6 AM saying he had to cancel. I picked up the email at 7:15 AM. I bought 8 hours of painting. The contractor told me he would send two painters for 8 hours beginning at 7 AM. Finally, 1 painter showed up at 10:30 AM. His work was OK. I have a 18 foot foyer and I sent the contractor photos of the area, which he asked for. The lone painter came without a ladder!! He was pleasant enough but the work was mediocre.

We purchased a $549 coupon for general contracting home improvement services. Scott came out and gave us an estimate to also replace the deck boards and tile the master bath. They removed the old boards on the deck the first day. After the new wood was delivered, they installed it in one day. They also replaced the boards on the steps. They took care to remove the built in bench and later reinstall it. They did a great job. We had purchased all of the materials for the bathroom tile job previously. We already had the tile, grout, duralock board, mortar, caulk, screws, shower door, faucet, valve, etc. During the demo, Greg looked at the tile and came up with a great design. He was very meticulous about the cutting and placement of the tile. He also installed a new valve for the shower and installed the new faucet. The finished bathroom looks fantastic. They were very neat and worked with a minimal amount of dust. They put down drop cloths in the bedroom and hallway. They were very thorough about cleanup. We think HCC's prices were very reasonable for all of the work they did. They were very pleasant and professional.

I had to pay extra because the deal did not cover the entire job. The service turned out well and they got the job done within 1 day. They communicated with me throughout the job. We had to cancel the original appointment because one of the workers was running late and we rescheduled it for the next week. The cleanup was good.

Greg and his assistant arrived and were very friendly (in January 2014), and we enjoyed the experience. The quality was good and he obviously knew what he was talking about. We wanted to complete the initial projects and obtained quotes, and hoped he would return soon. He estimated about a week. The responsiveness over email was somewhat lacking, but we got the quotes and wanted the work done. We wanted to get on the schedule sooner rather than later, but their schedule was full. When Greg arrived the second time, several months had passed and he still did not have the materials for the "safety" job. He knew exactly what he needed and tried to get it that morning, but the location did not have what he needed, so he had to go and get them at another location. We believed he would have purchased the materials in advance because he needed what he needed. That was disappointing given the time that expired between the last time he was here and the time he came to complete it. He also instructed me to get the paint necessary to finish, but Home Depot could not give me the paint based on the information provided. In the end, there was no time for the paint. He was supposed to return to complete it, which also turned into a scheduling nightmare. Ultimately, Scott refunded us a portion of the total price rather than them returning to paint (at our choice). The job itself was perfect (minus not being painted) and our children are safe. We were very happy with it, but the delay was frustrating given the safety issue involved and the constant excuses for not having the items or not having space on their schedule. That is the reason we will not hire them again, which is unfortunate because we certainly have a need for a contractor for various odd jobs. The overall timeframe was four months.
Description of Work: I purchased this for two particular projects, neither of which the contractor could do without additional materials, through no fault of their own. They ended up doing various odd jobs, including painting a bathroom, re-installing smoke detectors, installing a door handle, etc. The primary concern was dry rot in wood on our deck and we have small children. Given our concern for safety, we asked that HCC return to complete that job and also replace floors in a bathroom. It took so long to schedule that we decided not to have them replace the bathroom floor, but they did replace the railings on the deck.

Scott who I believe is the owner of HCC called me in a timely manner. We were remodeling our kitchen but their were areas of the house that needed work unrelated to the kitchen. We needed three bathroom fans replaced and we had removed a piece of drywall to check for mouse infestation and wanted the drywall replaced. We also asked for a price for strip stick and plug LED lights undercabinet and overcabinet. Scott came that Saturday but not to work, just to get an idea of what needed to be done. We ordered the fans, and had already purchased the strip LED lights, transformers and dimmers. He said he had experience putting in this kind of lighting (several contractors and electricians said they had not). He told us he could get the fans and lights in by Christmas. He said he couldn't give us a hard and fast date for the work. Several weeks later on a Saturday at 8:30am he called. I asked when would he be coming since we had no warning. Scott apparently carries some kind of schedule with him because one time he did come to put in the fans and said he would be stopping for a quick lunch and was already in Woodbridge so wouldn't be long. It was two hours later that he came, and he asked where the closest Lowes or HD was. I told him and he said oh, we were just over there at the taco bell. I asked, You were less than a half mile from here, and it took you two hours for a Taco Bell lunch??? He said he had to go to the hardware store but would be right back. Two more hours later he called and said it had taken a long time to get there (it's less than two miles away and only 20 minutes in evening traffic. This was about 3:30pm. He said he would get back to us soon. That happened two months later. He sent a guy to put up the drywall. No plastic was used to block off the dust. I spent a week cleaning it up. His person promised to be back to mud it, but we never heard back. I was relieved. I regret having to leave a bad review but I see Scott has a coupon going all the time. This is most definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Caveat emptor. Go elsewhere people. You are just begging for a headache or series of headaches.

The initial estimate was done at the end of 2013, but work was delayed due to winter weather. If we had insisted we could have probably started earlier, but there was no problem waiting for spring. The start date was delayed by two days as another customer's project ran long, but I was called the day ahead (and then the next day) and there was no problem with the postponement. In fact, the work was done on Saturday, which was more convenient for us, and two crews were sent to do two days work in one. The two foremen on site immediately established their trustworthiness with my wife in the morning while I was working, and I was pleased with their progress and communications when I returned home several hours after they started. As rotted trim was removed more damaged wood was discovered beneath, which was not a surprise to me, but was reason for apologies from the owner and foremen since this would involve more expense. The work progressed quickly and efficiently, and both my wife and I were pleased with the results. We are now waiting on an additional estimate for work in a few other areas, which we have agreed is not a rush. I'm more pleased than expected, and it's nice to have this project behind us.
Description of Work: The initial offer was for one hour of rotted wood removal, but we knew there was more, so we asked for an additional estimate to take care of everything. The project involved removing rotted trim on the house and replacing it with a composite trim, and the new estimate was well within my expectations.

The first time HCC came out the gentlemen did not know what they were doing - and they left. I was disappointed as I have always had good service with Angie's list deals - however they contacted me and apologized and came out and completed everything. They also cleaned up afterwards. Because of the second time and how precise they did the work I would definitely use again.
Description of Work: Installed a shelf above the range to install a microwave - had to do some electrical work to make this possible. Fixed some siding on the outside of the house that was buckled and ripped.

Workers were on time and professional in all areas. They hooked up all the PVC lines correctly and neatly. However, the job was left incomplete. The bathtub spout was left loose and the one-handle bathtub faucet was installed incorrectly. Also, because all the drywall wasn't in yet, I asked them to cap the shower faucet pipe so no water can pass through. When the water is turned on, it leaks and sprays due to the improperly fit cap. I had given plenty of opportunity for the provider to come out and inspect the job and discuss, but they refused. Recommendation - ensure you coordinate a quality control person (manager) to inspect the job prior to workers departing.

Response from HCC Remodeling
[member name removed], The job was left incomplete due to the fact you refused to pay for any additional time. My tech informed you there was additional blocking needed for the tub spout. As for the improper installation of the handle, you installed the diverter ( shower tub mixing valve) incorrectly, not my technicians. You were also informed that it was installed to low and additional blocking was needed of which you refused to pay for. My technicians are required to fill out a journal prior to leaving each job as to what was accomplished and what if any additional work is needed. You got 8 man hours plus an additional 45 minute’s. Once again you declined any extra time to complete the project correctly. We will not send you a quality control person (manager) free of charge? You expressed in your emails before, you did not feel the 8 hours were satisfied: “So, for 8 hours of work (or 2 people for four hours), I believe they should have done a lot more such as tiling or drywall as we dicsussed, but none of that was even started. Bottom line - I am disappointed and I am respectfully asking HCC to resolve this issue. My preference is HCC sends a different technician to fix the plumbing and propose to me what else they will fix to get the full 8 hours worth. A professional should be able to hook the plumbing up under an hour.” The technicians that were there ran forty five foot of water line, built a soffit, corrected a hot cold mixing issue with the diverter you installed (which is possibly upside down), and had to run to get supplies due to improper supplies on the job. Proper supplies were to be on the job before we started any work and were not supplied. My techs showed up at 8:30 am and left at 1:15 by my calculations that is 4 hours 45 minutes. We do charge for having to run out and get supplies (you were not charged the additional forty-five minutes they did work) and for what was accomplished, your estimate of what can be done in an hour is unrealistic as you are not a plumber (see above reference to the diverter installation). Without drywall or a shower surround installed, why would anyone turn the water on?

They're very good and it's a great and reputable company and they're doing the work for us. They're from the negotiators that were further a great deal. We had a lot of wood that they replaced so it worked out very well. They also try hard and it was a blending work for the costumers. I think that they really worked with the costumers, they try to get them, deal with them and they don't try to take advantage of them. They also try to save money as best as they can. Whether you get the materials or they get the materials, they always try to work with you and they also do not charge extra money for pick-ups. They try to get the contact rate and on the further stuff, it was perfect. They can really help out that they looked at other things. We had a problem with the fan that was not moving and we're not out there all the time to look over it so we had to call somebody and I wouldn't have seen that. In things like that, they were very observant .

Prior to their arrival we discussed that the tile I chose was porcelain rather than ceramic and this would incur additional cost. I asked for a ballpark of how much and was told $100.00. I was fine with that. They came and measured and determined that my floor was 120 sq ft, which of course would also involve additional cost. I completely understand that. This would amount to an additional 80 sq ft of tile which would come to approximately another $100.00 (the tile was about $1/sq ft.) What also needs to be considered is that they determined that the old floor would not have to be removed - the new floor could be installed over it. This would save them some considerable time and labor. In the end they determined that the additional cost to me, above the $449.00 that I had already paid, would be between $600 and $700, and I think that's just too much. It was mutually agreed that we would go no further with this job.
Description of Work: The "deal" was to provide new ceramic tile flooring up to 40 sq feet including removal of old floor and all materials and labor.

Slight hiccup on the arrival time, but one they arrived, they were professional and quick. They replaced the thermostat and the mailbox ( put the numbers on it too!) as well as fixed my kitchen sink (the sink was no longer connected to the drain), and replaced the trim on an interior door and rehung the door. All in 2 1/2 hours! I was very pleased with the work and will consider them again for future work.

Was responsive at first when contacted regarding Angie's list coupon for other services. After asking several times for a quote for the work he finally sent one of his guys to the house to measure, spec and provide a quote for the work. During that process we discussed with the contractor some details about moving doors and adding a linen closet and door. When those design elements got back to the owner for pricing they were not included. Pricing was 4 sentences and included no details but mentioned doors and trim and we assumed buying and re-hanging the doors was included. I had told him that I did most of the finishing work (i.e. painting and flooring myself) and he took finish work to include handing doors and trim. Once the work got started, the demo went quickly but they did a mediocre job of protecting the rest of the house from the dust. We ran into an unforeseen problem with the gas line being in the way of one of the doors so we had to change the size of the door and couldn't reuse the existing door. There was no discussion from the contractor about a change in scope or a need for a different door which I would have expected and understood/approved. After a rough drywall hanging and mudding job was done the guys disappeared for days. When I contacted the contractor he told me he was under the impression that everything was done and all that might be needed was a light sanding. When they came out the next day there was so much work left to be done (just on the walls) that it required 2 men for 10 hours. While they did a decent job of covering some of the house from the dust they created other parts of the house were completed left open and required us to bring in our cleaning service (our entire master bathroom was COVERED in a white coating). I left things with the contractor that we shared in the miss communication of the scope of the work, and the work that was done (which he believes is everything he quoted) was done well. We won't be using the contractor for several other projects that we had planned and started to discuss with him because of the communication issues. I suggest kif you contract with this company you are VERY specific about the scope and timelines in the proposal to avoid the issues we had.

Response from HCC Remodeling
In response to your review: I had given a quote for the work on 12/10/2013 after you had agreed to the estimate but not the permit and plan fees of $400.00. You asked if your wife could get the permits and have me do the drawings on 12/16/2013. I responded with, I will only Charge $100.00 for the drawings (a $300.00 value from an architect). You also asked if this was the best I could do for an Angie’s list customer. Please review your emails on 12/16/2013 . Refer to below e-mail conversation: A few final questions on the work. 1. In the estimate you said assumes no electrical or plumbing. The is a light switch and outlet on the wall being demolished and moved. I have an electrician that can do the work of moving the switches/outlets to the new wall. Will there be any additional costs if he does that for me? 2. Would you provide all the items needed for XXXXXXXX to go to the county for the permits and if she did the part of going to get the permits would the additional $400 still apply? We don't mind being the runners to get the permits, but you would be better at knowing exactly what permits are needed and filling out the paperwork in such a way to ensure we get approval immediately. Would they require blueprints for example? 3. Is this the best pricing you can do? Is this the Angie’s List pricing that we discussed when we met a couple weeks ago? My response to the customer: The permits would require blueprints of some form to explain the work and also may require an engine (misspelled engineer) stamp depending on what is discovered. We are assuming there is no bearing point to be dealt with and if this is so the drawing will only take me a few hours to do. Yes, you would save a few dollars by pulling the permits yourself my design fee would only be about $100.00 (for drawings). I also believe I am giving you quite a deal on the work this project will take at least 2 to 3 days to complete with the drywall mud typically labor for 3 days is almost $2000.00. I can get you on the schedule shortly after the first of the year if you like. End e-mail. We received no deposit or payment for the drawn plans. Nor for my assistance for helping to explain the permitting process with you and your wife through email. If I had received a deposit on the plans I would have made them more of a priority, as is I was never paid for the drawings. Then you also used my contractor license to pull the permits causing me to incur further taxes on the job. The fact that you took advantage of my temporary help to send you a copy of my contractor’s license and county business license. Something, I would have not authorized if I were available for contact. Thus the $400.00 charge originally discussed. If you need to ensure I was a contractor you can just go to http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/, something I suggest all homeowners do before letting any contractor do the work. Your email dated 12/16/13 stated as follows: Please coordinate with XXXXXXXX. She is on copy on this email. When I did forward the plans and an invoice for 10% of the job. At which point your response was “We will gladly give you the 10% when you hand over the drawings”. Your wife had received the plans four hours prior to this e-mail. I still did not receive any payment for your job until the day I showed to start it. I have also never been paid for the plans. When I had my Technician on 12/31/2013 stop by and get the measurements needed, I had already estimated your job and was not privy to what was discussed or aware of any further requests or changes you requested or assumed were getting done. The fact that the Estimate did not state anything about doors or trim, simply would say, that no doors or trim are included. See below: Item Description 02.10 Demo tear out wall to shift 2' PENDING NO PLUMBING OR ELECTRICAL NEEDS TO BE MOVED 07 Wall Frame Frame new wall 18 Interior Walls hang and finish new drywall 12 Doors & Trim Shift bedroom door to accommodate wall movement 18 Interior Walls Patch walls and ceiling where door shift and wall shift occurred I had planned to reinstall the master bedroom door but, due to the fact it was no longer usable in the new opening, because of the gas line, which was discussed with your wife in great detail, that day, and all the options were explained. Such as installing a smaller door, moving the gas line to accommodate a 36” door and the fact a door would need to be purchased. Due to the gas line I had to shift my schedule to accommodate your job. Which added an additional two days to any work being continued. As soon as we were notified of the completion of gas line work, you were scheduled the next day. Thanks to some very understanding Angie’s list members whom allowed me to move the preplanned appointments to accommodate you. Also, whom ever moved your gas line removed a crucial bearing stud which would have to be replaced. The inspector notified you of this . I gave you an estimate to repair the issue as well as the extra drywall patching needed. Your response was that you wanted to contact the HVAC company to reimburse you for our charge to do the needed repairs. Your job Failed inspection due to the removal of a structural component done by the person whom relocated the gas line, all of our work Passed inspection. The failure was not of our doing. Now since the structural issues have not been resolve there is an issue with completion and could cause a problem with my license. I intend to call the county and explain the unauthorized use of our credentials. The dust comes with demolition and drywall. We had laid drop clothes to protect the new flooring. We were also told not to worry about the carpets in the master bedroom as they were coming out so there was no need to protect them. As for the rest of the master bedroom, I should not have started work that day due to your furniture being present. The average person would realize that dust is a part of construction and if you intend for anything not to get dusty then cover or move it. We protected what we could, but I was not prepared for a messy bedroom needing $500.00 worth of drop cloths to cover furniture that should have been covered or moved by you. You apparently are not very versed in construction work if you were unaware the dust comes with drywall work and demolition. You do not understand what a finish carpenter does. He installs doors, trim and flooring, of which you said you would do the finish work. I misjudged your understanding of construction work, that is my fault. As far as the final sanding goes, my tech informed me that all that was needed was light sanding and touch up. Since I had not heard from you stating anything different, I believed that was all that was required. Until you contacted me a week later, and was belligerent about the completion. Until that point I was unaware of any issues. At this point you demanded I purchase three doors at almost One Hundred Dollars apiece and install them and the trim (crown molding) at my expense. I am sure as a small business owner you should understand my irritation at the demands of purchasing and installing items that were never part of the Estimate. After I pulled a tech from another job to go complete the “ light” sanding and found I was misled by the previous tech. I pulled a second tech from another job to correct the problem. The original tech no longer is employed by my company. We apologized repeatedly about the misinformation we were given and completed the job per the estimate. The fact that you are an Angie’s List customer already gets you a discount and you should not expect any other work done at no cost.

This Angie's List deal came up after I had been handed a very heavy report from our home inspector for a home we had just written a contract on. The home is 19 years old and maintenance items had been neglected. We went ahead and purchased the home anyway, intending to use the Angie's List deal to fix a lot of the items. First, the communication: Scott is very fast to communicate. He answers all questions really quickly. Second, scheduling: the weather has wreaked havoc on any outdoor items. Scott managed my expectations, and we both watched the weather carefully. Eventually we settled on a day for the work, but before that, Scott came out to get a feel for the work. Finally, the work: He and his crew showed up on time and got immediately to work. Some things they accomplished were: repainting and sealing all the steel lintels over windows set in brick -replacing a patio step -reseating a toilet -completely overhauling a deep basement window casing that had severe water damage. They moved fast and didn't mess around. At the end of the day, Scott informed me that I had credit for another 7.5 hours, and to make him another list. So they just recently came out and finished another list I gave them. Scott is laid back and very easy to get along with. He brings good crews with him, and I will not hesitate to use them again or to recommend them.
Description of Work: Repaired many things identified by home inspector after home purchase.

The crew arrived at 8am and were very professional and courteous. They immediately began work on tearing down the portion of the roof to be replaced, and another worker began measuring the door so that it could be purchased and brought to the house. The work was completed as estimated by 1:30pm. They did a thorough cleanup of the area. I was pleased with the work and would use HCC Remodeling in the future for home repair or remodeling work.
Description of Work: Replaced basement door and portion of the roof that had rotten wood underneath.

This worked out well. We were able to get together after a short delay, which we agreed on. I found them to be very friendly and diligent. They seemed to know what they were doing when installing the cabinets. We were quite happy with the service. I see no room for improvement and would be happy to use them again if needed.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal for a contractor for a day. I had them installed my new kitchen cabinets.

Greg and Mike showed up on time, worked efficiently, especially considering much of the work was outdoors in 35 degree temperature. They used drop cloths where the ceiling repair was done and cleaned up all their work areas. Job well done.
Description of Work: 1) Replaced ceiling plasterboard where plumber had replaced leaking pipes. 2) Built a very stable railing on the back stairs complete with concrete footers. 3) Repaired water damage to porch columns by digging out the rot and filling with bond. 4) Reconfigured the top jam at front door to prevent air leaks.
