Did not perform work.
Description of Work: I received a quote for repair work to the brick facade on my townhouse. The owner (I cannot remember name right now) was very friendly, responsive and professional. His price was just higher than other quotes I received.

Great. Gave us the design. Removed old concrete sidewalk and staked out the new walkway. Once we saw it we asked for a couple mods, which Martin gladly did with no problems or price change. He brought several brick samples to ensure we were happy with the match to our brick front. He gave us everything we wanted and more than we expected. Highly recommend.
Description of Work: Designed custom brick walkway and porch. Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. Have received a LOT of complements.

The project took about a week, including breaking up and hauling off our original concrete sidewalk, laying out and framing the new walkway (which he let us change after we saw the layout and wanted it wider at one end), putting down 4-inch concrete foundation and then doing the actual bricklaying & mortar work. They worked hard, cleaned up at the end of every day, and completed the job right on schedule. Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. He went out of his way to make sure we were happy, including making some changes to the design (widening the flare) at no additional cost. We were VERY happy with his work, have recommended him to others, and will call him again if we have more masonry work.
Description of Work: Martin removed and replaced our concrete sidewalk with a beautiful curved brick walkway, and added brick to the steps and portico to complete the picture. Brick walkway has an intricate pattern and was laid on 4-inch concrete foundation. He brought out brick samples to match the house and explained the whole process, what he would be doing and why. He also talked to us about different layout styles we could use for the walkway, portico, stairs and borders. He was very thorough and we were very happy with his professionalism and performance.

Same great service and work. This was a scary job, as our house is 3 stories tall and on the edge of a hill. But that didn't scare him away. Now our house doesn't smell like wet cinders from rain getting down our chimney flue when it rains. Thanks, Martin!
Description of Work: Martin replaced our chimney cap, some cracked bricks in the chimney and repointed the brick walls of our house. This is the 2nd time we've worked with him. He had a helper this time and got all work done in 2 days.

Excellent work. He contacted us 2 days after I sent the email (I recommend you call if you want a faster response), and turns out he was available the next day to start work. As he's out on job sites it takes him awhile to get to a computer and respond. We trusted him enough to leave the water and electric out and let him work when we're not home...the only contractor we trust enough to do that. Our neighbors complained a bit about the dust getting on their new car, but it's unavoidable in a townhouse. Still, you might want to consider moving plants or your vehicle if you're concerned about dust. We did wash a bit of the dust out of our driveway after he was done - no big deal. If I need work done on the brick again I will call Allen Home Masonry.
Description of Work: This is the third time we've used Allen Home Masonry. The first was a couple years ago to repair the cracks in the mortar/brick resulting from the unevening settling of the townhouse stairs from the main body of the house. He did an excellent job of matching brick and mortar to existing colors. A couple years later it's hard to see where the repairs were made. This time we asked him back to repair crumbling mortar in other places around the stairs, and seal holes that had formed around the railing to avoid water getting under the stairs. Again, he did an excellent job of matching the color. Due to uneven settling, he had to improvise a bit on the right side of the stairs, building up a small area with mortar so the railing sits tightly in the brick. It will require touchup paint, but solves the problem of exposed holes. I expect that in a few more years the railing will have to be replaced, but Martin's job is a good temporary solution that will allow us to prepare the house to sell. FYI, the second time we used Martin was for replacing tile in bathroom (floor and shower). We were quite happy with his tile work, but he made it clear that he didn't do drywall finishing, so we had to finish that up ourselves - actually a nice way to save some $$$ if you don't mind some manual labor. No complaints.

Martin Allen is the owner and he is an Irish stone mason. Martin didn't want the job initially, because our porch was crooked and had sunk through the years. He was worried that I wouldn't like his work, because he wouldn't be able to correct the severe crooked angles of the porch. I understood. So I first had A-1 Concrete lift the porch back into place and remove our old iron supported, which had rusted. By removing the rusted, out-dated iron supports, we learned or porch would need resurfacing: the porch concrete had pits in it and rust iron nails remaining. We also contracted Roof Real Clean to clean off the moss from the roof and one side of the house, which showed that our mortar was in need of repointing. We called Martin again. He came to take a 2nd look and agreed to do all the work. Martin was able to remove the old iron nails without further damage to the porch. He assisted the us the homeowners with attaching the columns to the porch and cemented them in place. He clearly knows what he's doing and is a pleasure to work with. He did a great job, although the process was a bit messy. He is artistic and really cared about the color, size, and stone patterns and wanted it just right. He did a great job of matching our mortar color to our house. He was able to use the bricks left on the property from repairs made by the prior owner. He asked us for an addition few hundred dollars to buy more stone, as he needed more for the patterns I requested than he estimated. I didn't mind as I could see he was doing a great job working hard and did run out of his initial stone delivery. He was trying to only buy what he needed. The negatives: 1)Martin works alone and so it can take him days to weeks to get back to you. (But once he was on the job, he spent long days working to finish it.) He always did call or email me back. He must have a lot of work. 2)The dust from the job had to be washed off the door, shutters, and plants. Two of our plants only somewhat survived by the porch because he had to push them out of the way to get to the job. We will probably replace them. (Those plants were probably a little too close to the porch to begin with. In retrospect, I should have moved the plants to another spot before he began.) In the spring of 2011 after a hard winter, we noticed a crack in one of the grout lines on the porch and asked him to fix it. He did more than we asked and redid several stones to ensure they were correctly attached. So we were happy he was willing to warranty his work. It really makes the entry so inviting. We already have another job for him on another property and look forward to working with him again.
Description of Work: Remove old rusted iron nails, recover porch with slate, assisted with installation of fiberglass columns, repointing of house brick masonry, and replace cracked bricks.
