Crew was prompt, careful, courteous and laid down tarps and cleaned up everyday after working. Communicated issues promptly, workmanship was excellent, resolved a few design issues and made fixes that were flawless. Only issues was size of fridge and that was not really their fault, but would have been nice if they noticed an obvious problem (fridge was to deep, needed to get shallower one)

Issues from the very beginning. One bath, took out tub, build in ceramic tile shower. Built it too large, couldn't access the shower jbuilt too close toi let. So, had to tear out 1 weeks of work and start again,. Fixtures were not the kohler we picked out with man at Lowes they are cheaper look alikes. Plumming in 2nd bathroom tub put in upside down, and tub is pulling away from floor. Called many times in last number of years to come and at least look. Didn,t happen. Now we are spending $$$ to have bathrooms re done very disappointed with work done We spent lots of money and have falling apart bathrooms .

In response to the review, I have a contract with [member name removed] selections. His selections were installed according to his choices. Our company does 300 bathrooms a year, and in the history of remodeling, I am not sure how anyone installs a tub "upside down". These attacks are unfounded and a mystery to Jeff Pregman whom managed the project. We are stumped... We give all of our customers a report card and a punch list sheet, and there was zero complaints regarding our pricing, quality etc.... We are not sure if and or who posted this review. I welcome a call from said complaint-ant to explain this posting.

First, the bathroom is complete and we are happy with the bathroom. The problem is we have never had a new bathroom install and we didn't understand the process completely. Our original quote was modified because of 'changes'. When the installers began, they found the floor would have to be jack-hammered to access the floor drain. Also, the tile we chose were not their 'standard' size. So, between the two, we were charged an additional $2400. Ok, fine Once the job was nearly complete (but I had a punch-list of items to fix), Ken expected full payment. When I held back approx $2000, Ken because very obnoxious and threatening. Another issue is TPT wanted an extra 3% because I was paying via credit card. This was not explained up-front. And, be prepared to pay for each trash bag, screw, etc. Definitely a poorly ran and managed business-buyer beware! Finally, if TPT attempts to counter, I have all of this documented via phone conversations and email correspondence. Yes, the phone conversations can be construed as he-said, he-said, the email is non-disputable.

Everything went great. They actually bring out a mobile home which has a bunch of samples and you get to pick exactly what you want. I work allot, so it was very nice not having to take off of work to a showroom during business hours. They bring everything to you! Their pricing was super competitive, so definitely call for estimate. Tom came out with the van and was wonderful. He had a ton of great suggestions, definitely knew what he was doing. The crews arrived everyday on-time and covered the carpet in the bedroom and furniture during demolition. They stored all their tools out of the way at night. They asked before putting in the lights, etc., to make sure it was exactly where I wanted it. No major problems encountered and everything went as scheduled, even finished early. Would recommend and use again for future projects.

They started on time every day and worked the entire time they were here. They left every day after they had cleaned up and arranged their tools so as not to interfere with any traffic patterns. The crew leader Godo kept me informed and asked my opinion before any change was made in order to complete the project. They completed both bathrooms in less than 2 weeks. I couldn't have been more pleased -- they told me they'd be done before Thanksgiving, and they were. The results are even better than we expected and I would recommend TPT to anyone. They have done several projects in my neighborhood and every neighbor is extremely pleased with their results also. Be sure to get other estimates first, then call TPT. You'll be amazed at how reasonable they are. I was.
Description of Work: TPT remodeled our master & hall bathrooms with new floor & shower tile, new mosaic shower pan, new vanities and granite counter tops, new toilets, new shower doors, new paint in both bathrooms, and they removed a wall that had divided the water closet area from the dressing area, which required moving and adding some electrical outlets and lighting fixtures and mirrors.

My 1960s era bathrooms needed to be completely remodeled. I contacted this company for an estimate and loved the way they conducted business. Forget about going to their showroom. They bring it to you in the form of a re-purposed library book mobile fully stocked with samples of bathroom fixtures, tile, lighting, etc. For people who have a hard time when offered too many choices, Two Poor Teachers offered a package with a specific group of fixtures at a set price, which was a fantastic option for me. Jeff made a great sales pitch without any high pressure. The work took about two and a half weeks. The crew was punctual, professional, and cleaned up their work area before leaving each day. All bathrooms required a lot of tile work (around tub, shower, and floors) which was exceptional. I was extremely happy with the finished product and would definitely use this company again.

The quote process was easy. This company has a mobile showroom that really made the product selection process as painless as possible. We had wanted to finish our basement for years, but kept getting overwhelmed with picking the various design elements. Jeff Pregman was extremely helpful during this phase of the project. Final quote to finish framing, electrical, and add a bathroom was for $30k even. this did not include carpeting. Work began promptly on the date quoted. Contract stated it was the customers responsibility for building permit applications. Two Poor Teachers (TPT) failed two plumbing inspections for improper installation of drain pipes, which caused a two day delay in their overall schedule. This is where things started to go wrong. TPT claimed that I needed to pay extra because they did not know I was going to get permits as instructed I was to do in the contract. The 2nd failure was due to a language barrier between the workers and inspector, where the workers said they understood, but the same issue was not fixed by the 2nd day. When the framing failed because they didn't install fire blocking, they claimed it was my responsibility since some of the walls were up prior to them starting the job. Since nothing had changed from the time they saw the basement and quoted the job, i did not agree. Several nasty e-mails from co-owner ken Nies and we agreed to disagree. Electrical failed inspection since the wrong gauge wiring was used for the bathroom GFCI. TPT again claimed it my fault since some electrical wiring was done already, and I reminded them that none of the bathroom walls were even built at the time of the quote. TPT then claimed I owed another $3,535 for change orders that were never presented to me, nor approved by me in writing as required by Virginia's Dept. of Professional and Occupational Regulations which licenses contractors. After probably 30 e-mails and several threatening conversations with Ken Nies, we agreed to disagree, and left it at he was going to put a lien on my house and sue me. I stated that i felt I was being taken advantage of, and welcomed a 3rd party review of our contractual disagreement. Overall Quality was also poor. Recessed lights above the bar were not spaced properly. Light switches were installed upside down (off up). Half door was cut with a hand saw (uneven cut). Bathroom light was installed un-centered and with three different light bulbs. One would think you'd get new bulbs with a new light fixture. Ceiling is bumpy and clearly shows the spackle marks. Toilet was installed right next to the shower entry door, leaving a giant space on the cabinet side. TPT said this was so I could add a bigger vanity later as if this was custom designed/built. The workers never received even a blueprint or sketch and the job was described verbally. I thought I would only need to be present the first couple days, but had to telework for two weeks. Materials were not properly ordered, requiring multiple trips back to Home Depot every single day. Light switches were installed on the inside of rooms not where the door openings were, but behind the door. Moulding was cut short, and covered up with caulk. There is soo much more to this bad experience, but i believe I've said enough to make my point. Some of the above quality issues were fixed before they left, but I again was verbally assaulted every step of the way. If no inspections were performed, I truly believe this company would've skated on by and I wouldn't have had half the issues. My parents had a bathroom remodeled with this company and had a good experience. Which is why I contracted with them. But again, no inspections were performed. Caveat Emptor.

Response from TWO POOR TEACHERS INC
Two Poor Teachers averages 300 bathroom projects, 20-25 kitchen projects and 10 or more basement remodeling projects a year. Over half of these jobs are referrals or repeat customers. We strive to complete every project according to the contract thereby meeting or exceeding customer expectations and our referral business and reputation bear that out. The facts are: 1. The contract did NOT include re-framing the existing wall framing (the exterior walls), but was very specific as to what areas were to be framed (bathroom and HVAC room). The code requires exterior walls have fire-blocking and that is what failed inspection, NOT the framing work completed by TPT. The customer mentioned no previous permits had been pulled, nor that the work had failed inspection. Bringing the existing framing (installed by someone else) to code was the majority of the change order cost. The change orders were given to the customer in an email and we continued with the fire-block installation in order to keep the project on schedule. Customer refused to pay for this additional work saying it was included in the contract. To the contrary, the contract was extremely detailed and did NOT include any “fixes” to existing framing. 2. Customer pulled all the wiring and most of the recessed lights were in place already. We only installed the recessed lights over the bar. Prior to the installation the customer was informed that they could not be spaced evenly because the existing lowered ceiling area above the bar was filled by HVAC ducting, plumbing, electrical wiring and floor joist framing. Placement of switches was discussed with the customer as well. 3. Every customer receives a Punch List. No mention of any issues regarding drywall or bumpy ceiling work was on the punch list document that was signed by the customer. The Base molding issue was brought to our attention in punch list and was resolved. 4. Our material ordering methods are immaterial and have no bearing on the contract. But to address the complaint, we order approximately 80% of what is needed. Our crew chief will procure any additional materials necessary to complete the job as most of that 20% of materials are job specific and cannot be ordered ahead of time. 5. Light switch boxes were already installed except for the ones in the HVAC room and bathroom. We completed the project in two weeks even with all the permitting requirements and change order work. The work was completed in accordance with the contract. We completed additional work, not included in the contract (fixing customer’s framing work so the basement could pass inspection and we could hang the drywall), and we were never compensated for this work. In the interest of resolving the issue we did not pursue placing a lien on his property, which was our right. Now, a year after the project is completed, the customer chooses to review the project in an attempt to disparage our good reputation.

We re did a large deck for this member.. 3 years later we get a call that some of the boards were "curling"... I (Owner) went myself to inspect.. Upon inspection, the boards had NEVER been treated in almost 3 and 1/2 years causing the wood to dry, check and shrink.... We always tell our clients to wait 3-4 months before treating... Not 3 1/2 yrs.... He wanted us to replace the entire area... Unfortunately we could not assist free of charge.

I highly recommend Two Poor Teachers for bathroom renovation. Everything went extremely well. Back in the Fall , they had a van that would come to your home with materials to choose from but I understand now you must go to the showroom. I am not one who likes to shop and decorate so I was really happy to choose from their selections, everything done in one evening. You can shop elsewhere if their selections are not what you want. Our job was more than their advertised special of $10,000 for three reasons. Our bathroom was bigger and there was water damage from the old shower /tub enclosure. We figured they would have to replace wood and drywall and that added to the cost but we had budgeted for it. Also, we choose some extra cabinets over what the special offered. The job was done in less than 5 days and there was never a mess anywhere. The workers were polite and quiet. Our renovated bathroom is beautiful and 8 months later there have been zero problems.

We had a problem in that the start date was bumped three times; the labor time and cost were miscalculated and we ended up eating that incremental cost. The primary laborer that they sent out was stellar and if it hadn't been for him we would have given this overall project a gradee of D. There seems to be communications issues between their operations and other aspects of their organization. The part-owner which attended an initial meeting was unimaginative and we had to spoon feed them potential solutions. After the washer and dryer were installed, we had to remind the workers to remove the shipping bolts. In addition, the washer was not properly balanced and we had to adjust it once the workers left. The opening for the sliding door was made too large, despite the fact that we had given the workers the proper dimensions of the door. In addition, we needed to adjust the door after the workers left: The stops and bolts that hang the door were not adjusted properly.

For us... a job well done by Two Poor Teachers.. Complete renovation... incorporated all our custom components (Tile, Vanity, Tub, Fixtures) seamlessly... TPT took the room down to studs and back to up with all fixtures in place in ten working days.. Did it the right way.. No delays... No issues... No problems... The crew was professional, competent, worked with us and were always on time... everyday.. like clockwork they were ready to begin work at 7:00... no down time.. As a full time real estate professional in northern Virginia for over 27 years I have seen new construction and renovation projects of all size and quality. Quality and price are important concerns... TPT delivered both... Quality workmanship at a very competitive price... Equally important is the ability to complete the project on time.. So many great plans turn south when a contractor gets spread too thin and your job becomes an after thought.. until they need money.. TPT truly sets a high standard on finishing the job in a timely manner.. They came... They did a great job.. They left.. They did not become part of the family... Wonderful.. Very pleased with the entire process.. highly recommend their service...
Description of Work: Complete renovation of Master Bath... Removed original standard sliding door shower stall and 1990's fiberglass soaking tub and replaced with a resort size shower and separate claw foot slipper tub.. All tile work and shower base were custom.. 2 sides glass... Heated flooring... Work was taken down to studs and rebuilt / beefed up... all fixtures for claw-foot tub, shower and vanity were installed...

Because we needed the job done in a hurry, we used the mobile showroom to select everything. Jeff and Rob were very helpful explaining their remodeling process and indicating current trends for fixtures, finishes, etc. The project was completely specified and priced out within a couple of hours and scheduled to begin the following Monday. The crew, led by Peter, arrived promptly at 7:00 each day as agreed and worked diligently throughout the day, protecting furniture in the adjoining bedroom with drop cloths. At the end of each day the drop cloths were removed and the room was restored to its original condition as much as possible. Peter consulted us frequently about any issues or questions that arose during the work and also recommended a couple changes to the original plan that improved the overall outcome of the bathroom. The work was scheduled to take 5 days but was completed early because the crew was able to work past their usual 3:00 end time on a couple of days. It was a good experience overall, and we're pleased with the final result. We've had a lot of work done on our house in the past few months, and Two Poor Teachers were one of the better contractors that we used.

Quality of workmanship was good. It is all customer selected and often purchased materials, cabinets were from Home Depot custom per their recommendation. Fine print is important with this crew. If there are problems with design, functioning, layout, etc., it is the customer's fault. Very difficult to address issues with. Ultimately negotiated a reduction on final invoice. Will charge for every single item used, no matter how small, regardless if they will use it at the next job (ie buckets). Plan on supervising the job very carefully on a daily basis. While the quality of the ultimate work was good and the price was reasonable, there are easier people to work with out there who do a very good job.

These guys were great! Jeff and Stu came out with the mobile showroom and I had everything picked out in an hour and a half. I had another estimate that was more money for less stuff. If you want to pick out your own tile you can but I was getting overwhelmed by the process so the showroom was a lifesaver. They are able to do bathroom remodels in about 5 days which is amazing. The two crew guys, Peter and Junior, were very professional and skilled. They were there everyday at 7...put tarps everywhere and plastic over my vanity, bed, etc to ward against dust. Project manager Stu stopped by every morning to check in with me and the guys to make sure everything was going well. None of the stock granite they have in the showroom floated my boat so they let me pick out my own with their supplier. I'm so glad I made the effort because I love the color I picked out. They ran into some old plywood and bad plumbing which required a little more work but they were able to get it done at a reasonable cost. All in all the project went very smoothly and I'm so happy with my new shower....I feel like I have a spa!
Description of Work: Complete master bathroom remodel. Removed tub and put in a shower. New tile flooring with matching shower floor and shower surround with decorative tiles. New counter height vanity with granite counter top, matching mirror and new toilet. Also a new light fixture, new light over the shower (suggested by Jeff) and new fan.

We chose TPT because of a positive recommendation from a friend and because their bid was significantly lower than the others we had gotten. They assured us they could work within our tight budget -- and they did. During the planning phase, they always presented the "budget" option first, but we were able to choose upgraded materials where we felt it was important (ex: shower hardware). We had difficulty finding shower hardware which was acceptable to the two of us and affordable at the same time. Jeff, the project manager, was always willing to go back to the drawing board to investigate another one of our ideas. We felt that Jeff was as interested as we were in putting together an attractive yet reasonably priced final product. The crew was great -- A+. They arrived on time each day. They were polite, considerate and cleaned up at the end of each day. We have both hardwood and carpeted floors and all surfaces were covered with canvas dropcloths. The crew chief consulted us at several points during the installation, and suggested changes which improved the final product. He was extremely knowledgeable and has clearly been doing this for a long time. The crew did an excellent job and they did it in five days. The other contractors estimated the job would take 4-5 weeks, which was another reason why we chose TPT.
Description of Work: Our master bathroom was gutted: all old fixtures and tile were removed. The shower walls were torn out down to the studs and new Hardiebacker installed. The shower was enlarged. The crew installed new tile (shower and floor), plumbing fixtures, vanity and lighting. Wiring was upgraded where necessary.
