Description of Work: Bought a Big Deal for 4 hrs of handyman work. He did odd jobs that included patching and painting, sanding, replacing a screen in a sliding door, repairing a borken folding door. We were preparing to move and rent the house so wanted several odd jobs done. The guy was on time and did some of the things we needed. He was on the phone a lot, left for a little bit, and clearly our job wasn't big enough to be very important. The workmanship was fine and he gave us some extra time because he had been on the phone so much, but as a new mom of a 2 mo and moving overseas to a new job while trying to rent our first-owned house, I wasn't happy with him leaving jobs undone or the lack of appreciation for the work on his part.

Two Poor Teachers has been in business for over 16 years and our employees are highly skilled. The phone calls were regarding the job that our installer was doing at this individuals home. As an A+ rated BBB Accredited business we take pride in our work. This individual was obviously stressed and as a courtesy we offered extra time at no additional cost. We also understand (being parents ourselves) that moving is stressful enough but to move oversees with a two month old has got to be very difficult and challenging adding to the stress of trying to rent out a "First Home". We appreciate you acknowledging the quality and price of the work was extremely acceptable. We wish you and your family the best in moving overseas. Ken and the Two Poor Teachers Team

The repair was done in 2 1/2 hrs for $350.00 as opposed to the repair that was done to the same location in 45 minutes for over $700 (per phone conversation with customer) by clover bank plumbing. When asked why the poor rating, said customers response was "It took too long" (I KID YOU NOT!).... I am beside myself... 1st, The repair that took 45 minutes and cost more than double was done incorrectly. 2nd it took longer because to do things right often takes time.. I have been in the business for over 15 years, and have 1000's of customers and have to say WOW!!!

They have a mobile showcase which they drive outside the house and show. They have a few packages that are already made up. We can choose the packages of accessories, etc. We wanted some tiles, but they didn’t have them. There were glass tiles and they charge more. The work was done quickly. They were neat and did a good job. They cleaned up after the work. They were punctual. I would get a bid from them in future.
Description of Work: I used the services of Two Poor Teachers Inc. for bathroom remodeling. I last used them in June 2011. They did a full bathroom remodeling with bath tub, shower, and tiles.
We'd received estimates before and I'd done a lot of research as well. One company that kept appearing was this company. They actually arrived with a mobile showroom with all of their fixtures, samples and more. The representative then came in to our home and looked at the bathroom in question. We were pleased with them but asked them to come back a second time with the mobile showroom after we'd had time to consider their options. They were very professional and provided excellent service. We hired them to do the job and they completed the job in a single week. The bathroom work they provided included removal of existing facilities and tile work and the replacement of new cabinets, plumbing, toilet, shower, mirrors, lighting and finishing touches. The crew worked very very well as a team... like the Boston Celtics of old... get the ball and run!! They consulted with us on any questions they had and were flexible with changes. The crew chief was extremely professional and we can't complement them highly enough. We have praised their services with the president of the company. He too was personally responsive, came to our home during the onset of construction and we were pleased and amazed at the over the top service. It was quite impressive. I would highly recommend this company to anyone considering a bathroom remodel.
Description of Work: We decided to do a bathroom remodel and wanted a comprehensive plan. This would include a gutting and total rehab.

Who would have thought? A showroom on wheels! I didn't have to spend one minute in Home Depot. Two Poor Teachers drove up to my house and we were able to pick tile, vanity, etc. all in my driveway! They did an amazing job on our kitchen and bathroom remodeling in June. They were done in within two and 1/2 weeks as stated in the contract and his guys were awesome! You can not go wrong by hiring Two Poor Teachers.
Description of Work: Kitchen and bathroom remodeling.
Two Poor Teachers was recommended by a friend, and we were not disappointed. The crew was hardworking, polite, and punctual. We were impressed both by the high-quality workmanship and by the speed at which the project progressed. We did not quite believe the initial estimate that they'd be done in two weeks -- thinking that this would take three weeks minimum -- but were pleasantly surprised to have the work completed in just a week and a half. More importantly, we are very pleased with the result -- our master bathroom has gone from something of an eyesore to one of the highlights of our home.
Description of Work: Complete master bathroom remodel, including re tiling floor, shower, and jacuzzi tub area; installation of new bath hardware, custom vanity, granite countertops, and sinks; repainting; and relocating lighting fixtures.
We had Jeff and Al come out to our home two years ago and what a blessing they were. In 2008 Two Poor Teachers remodeled our Master Bathroom for much less than the other 5 estimates we received. Not only was their price excellent, but the attention to detail that Al and Mario had to making sure the tile fit on our uneven walls was terrific, they are true artists. They did a full shower stall and bathtub replacement with our custom vanities in less then two weeks... In January 2011 we once again had Jeff come to our home with their new Mobile Showroom. This was unbelievable. I picked out everything right in my driveway. The cost of the materials was about 25% less than what I had saw online, and the nice thing was, it was all included in their package deals. The whole bathroom took less than1 week. I cannot believe how organized Jeff was, and this time Henri and his crews were on the job, and again extremely satisfied with the whole process. I have already referred 3 co-workers to Two Poor Teachers, and as promised, they sent me $150 visa card for each referral! The price and the process that they have is remarkable.....
Description of Work: Master Bathroom remodel in 2008, Hall bathroom remodel in 2011
We are a repeat customer of TPT. They remodeled our master bath about two years ago and we were extremely pleased with the quality of their work and their competitive pricing. Recently, we chose TPT to remodel our upstairs hall bathroom and again we were tremendously pleased with their quality and pricing. TPT helped us to select options that fit into our budget. The team arrived on time, was very respectful of our property, and was very courteous. They hauled all remodeling waste to the dump. TPT knew what they were doing, and what we appreciated most was their cleanliness and accommodation to our schedule for preparing for work and school. TPT did what we asked them to do and they did not make a mess or break anything. Their tile work is immaculate! Overall, we were very impressed with both remodeling jobs—we would refer them to everyone and we will in time use them to remodel the powder room on the main level of our home. The entire team, including Ken, Jeff, and Henry, did an excellent job explaining things and keeping us in the loop each morning and throughout the day.
Description of Work: For our upstairs hall bathroom, Two Poor Teachers (TPT) installed glazed porcelain floor and wall tile (including tile on the wall behind the toilet), a three-wall alcove soaking tub, a shower head and bath faucet, and two corner shelves, a wall mounted soap dish, and a recessed shampoo shelf in the tub area. They installed a two-piece toilet, a 48-inch wooden vanity with drawers and doors, a granite vanity top with a recessed sink and a two-handle, high-arc, widespread faucet, a large framed wall mirror mounted above the vanity, and a bar light mounted above the framed mirror. They also installed a quiet exhaust fan with a count-down timer, a recessed medicine cabinet, a recessed light above the soaking tub, two GFCI electrical outlets, a towel bar, a toilet paper holder, a towel ring, and new baseboard molding. At our request, TPT reused a curved shower rod that was in first-rate condition. We chose to paint this room by ourselves. All the same, TPT did an outstanding job preparing the walls, ceiling, and baseboard for us to paint.

The original proposal was made in late July, but the beginnning of work was delayed due in large part to the considerable time we took in researching and deciding on what materials to go with. We also had our own scheduling conflicts and the company was very flexible in accommodating us. When the date for start of work was finally set, the crew showed up early to work on the same day the materials were delivered. Work progressed rapidly as the they utilized virtually every daylight hour and occasionally worked after dark with portable lighting. The work appeared to be well organized and the crew was very closely supervised by the crew chief. The quality of the work was excellent. All of the materials had been hand selected, resulting in a better, more knot-free appearance than the original work. The fit of the decking and trim was first rate. Godo, the crew boss, is a real craftsman, and the work showed it. He was also thoughtful enough to show us where hidden problems with the existing structure appeared and explain exactly how he proposed to solve them. When the work was completed, the area was cleaned up well and the excess material was picked up and credited back to the account. I have done a fair amount of carpentry and I have definite expectations as to what constitutes a good job. I feel that this company delivered excellent results at a reasonable price. We are well pleased and would not hesitate to recommend them. Especially high marks go to Jeff Pregman, the general manager, whose customer relations skills are excellent, and the aforementioned Godo, whose keen eye and sharp skills made it all come together.
Description of Work: Pressure washed above grade gazebo and pergola structure, removed old deck surface and skirt boards, replaced some support structure, rebuilt two sets of steps, replaced entire deck surface and some trim, replaced pergola boards, replaced timber edging around courtyard area, reset brick edging, reinforced existing structure and made some structural improvements.

I was very frustrated with the lack of communications during the project, it seemed like I never knew what was going to happen; we had no working toilet for over a week. The owner was very nasty and rude and as a result of his behavior I would not recommend this company. The tile work was well done, the plumbing was installed incorrectly. I would not recommend any company who had a owner who left a message with the tone and rudeness as this person did regarding my complaint about the incorrect plumbing (I held a portion of the payment back until the problems were addressed/corrected). He implied I couldn't pay my bills and never addressed the problems I was having with the job. He did not respond to any of the any emails I forwarded about unresolved issues with the parts/plumbing. However, I was the problem and a dead beat payer, even though they had $13,500 of the $18,500 already in hand. The company has not responded to my request for a refund for parts they used but had to take out and put the right parts in (I had to pay for both sets of plumbing parts).
Description of Work: Complete tear down to studs of both full bathrooms in an older home. $19,000 was for labor and basic supplies such as wall board, grout, rags, trash bags. Parts such as toilets, tub, sink, tile was approx $19,000.

PM Jeff Pregman came to our house and thoughtfully went through the bathroom. He told us that we could go with a larger vanity and that he was sure he could make that work for the bathroom. The step was for us to buy all of the materials. We went with a Travertine tile and simple listello. Once he saw the tile he told us that there was an upcharge for both the travertine and the listello. He then backed off of the listello upcharge. Then the real problems began... Home Depot failed to order the tub we requested through 2 PTs (or so we were told). Instead of delaying the project, Mr. Pregman went out in search for a tub and came back with a nice Kohler. But the Kohler was 2 inches wider than the original tub we ordered. Now worries, he said, we can still make this work. I came home to find the tub and vanity installed. The tub was literally touching the vanity. So how was the curtain to close? So I told him the problem and he informed me that I would have to pay for the second, smaller vanity, even though he assured us he could make this work. He then attempted to charge me for the labor of switching out the vanity. The bathroom sat unfinished for about 10 days while we waited for the new vanity to come in. About five hours after they left on the final day the power in half of my house went out. I payed for an electrician to come in and fix the problem. It took them three hours until they found the problem. 2 PT tapped into the wrong circuit to set ups the lights in the bathroom and the wiring came undone in the middle of the night. I told Jeff about the problem and he agreed to only pay half.
Description of Work: We had Two Poor Teachers (2 PT) do a full remodeling of our small upstair bathroom.

Response from TWO POOR TEACHERS INC
1. The member was told, as all customers are told when they sign a contract and we create their "customer selection sheet" which details the materials and responsibilities for purchase of said materials, that the contract states "ceramic tile" unless otherwise specified. He chose Travertine, which is more complex to install as there are no grout lines and we had to "float the whole floor to make sure the tiles were even. This extra work required an upcharge of $650 in the labor. 2. When we signed the contract and decided on the vanity, the member required a 30" vanity. He was told that the vanity was going to be too tight with the toilet and VA state code required a minimum 15" of clearance left/right of the toilet. He understood, but requested that we order the 30” vanity anyway. As for the tub, he is correct. We needed and found a tub that was 2 inches wider. We did install the vanity close to the tub (which we had the crew move over to leave 1 inch clearance for the curtain.) The customer insisted that it was too close to the toilet. He was informed that the initial assessment of the situation was to install a 24" vanity and that he requested a larger 30" unit. The 2 inches of extra tub width is the issue here. The vanity and toilet were going to be tight either way. He then demanded that TPT purchase him a 24" vanity. We found this entire issue ironic since he went against the Project Manager’s recommendation in the first place. 3.The member did not attempt to contact Two Poor Teachers to remedy the situation. He called an electrician who spent 3 hours looking at other parts of the house before he told them that he had work completed in the bathroom that day. This initial bit of information would have drastically reduced the labor time for the electrician, who's labor charge could have been completely avoided had he called TPT first. We respond immediately to emergency issues on our projects. We were not given the chance to fix the problem first and then were asked to pay the complete bill. TPT was VERY accommodating in offering to pay for half. 4. TPT only changed out a light fixture in the bathroom using the same power that was already installed. A wire nut came loose as the customer stated. Our crew should have used electrical tape around the wire nut as a secondary line of assurance of the connection. This minor fix is the issue that caused the exorbitant labor charge from the electrician. We would have checked the connections in the lights immediately and had the problem resolved in minutes AND FOR FREE. In conclusion, Two Poor Teachers makes every effort to have customer responsibilities and materials choices detailed upon signing of the contract. If a customer changes his/her material choice off of what is written in the contract, and that material causes additional work for Two Poor Teachers to install said material, then an additional labor charge is required. TPT apologized to him about the electrical issue and lamented the fact that he did not call us first to rectify the problem. TPT did offered to split the bill with him which was more than fair.

We hired Two Poor Teachers (TPT) to serve as the lead contractor in the remodeling of our kitchen. Overall, I would give them an A- for the money. TPT's primary effort started with the demo and disposal of our existing kitchen, and concluded less than 3 weeks later! (TPT Project Coordinator Tom Pennell estimated 4-6 weeks for the job). The original estimate was $10,350 for the labor and materials; the final cost was approx $11,350, higher than expected because of additional work as well as materials purchased at cost at a home improvement store (TPT does not make money on materials, they focus on labor). The existing kitchen was very old and outdated, and the house itself is a rowhouse constructed in 1939, so we didn't know what they would find when they tore everything out. They removed the old wood flooring down to the sub-floor. In addition to TPT, we used a different floor company to actually install the new wood floors in the kitchen/dining room (the cost was $1,800); TPT would have done the install but we had a prior relationship with this floor company; we used a different cabinet company for the cabinet and countertop materials, and countertop installation ($6,800). Strangely, TPT does not do countertop installation. There were no major issues, and TPT was terrific to work with. Tom Pennell was the project coordinator/manager, and he had a two-person crew (Saul and Carlos) sub-contracted out to do the work. Tom managed the project. We saw him on Day 1, and he stopped by two other times to check in and ensure everything was going smoothly. Saul and Carlos did a fantastic job and the speed at which they work is amazing. Occasionally, when they were minor issues or questions (as there are guaranteed to be!), Tom would call promptly to resolve. He was accessible via cell phone, and he is also responsive via email (but usually within 12-24 hours). The reason for the A- grade: 1) The final sum was higher than initially estimated, but we were not told until we received the final invoice. 2) Communication could have been a little better, a little more prompt (see #1). 3) We received the invoice over email before the job was officially completed, which was more annoying than anything (TPT requires you pay 25% up front, then 75% at project completion). 4) TPT did not do a great job protecting furniture and other space from the incredible amount of dust and residue that collects anytime you demo a kitchen. We spent an inordinate amount of time cleaning up afterward; this will happen no matter how much covering you have, but it could have been better. Overall, these are pretty minor things. Tom is a terrific guy, knowledgeable, honest and down-to-earth; and Saul and Carlos were fantastic, highly skilled and very respectful of our time and our home. Overall, we strongly recommend TPT for your kitchen (or bath) needs!

They were good throughout. They finished on time and gave us a fair price.
Description of Work: They did a small remodeling job on our bathroom. They put in ceramic tile on flooring and in the shower stall and also built a custom recess and installed a glass shower door.

Two Poor Teachers sent out a very poorly trained crew who spoke little to no English. The Project Manager/Representative never checked up on the work done and never bothered to follow up and ask us how we liked it. Within a few short weeks, the grout cracked and the soap dish fell off. They came back grudgingly to repair it. A few months later the installed toilet leaked and we found out the crew busted one of the installation nuts connecting the bowl to the tank. They remedied it by squirting caulk into the nut recess instead of fixing it. Water leaked from the tank and into our living room ceiling. I called back and Mr Nies got very upset and said that the work performed was over a year ago. He later contacted my wife and got rude with her. I will never recommend them to anyone. Poor customer service and extremely poor work. I had high hopes and wished it would have turned out better.
