We have a 1900 square foot 1973 Colonial Style home. The roof to the house is old, and needs to be replaced. There are no signs of damage, but the roof is over 20 years old, so the time has come to address it before it becomes an issue. We received an estimate of $4800 from another contractor, but decided to get some other quotes just for comparison, as we are new to this. We heard a commercial for NU Look home design on a local radio station. The advertisement claimed that the past winter had been very hard for business, so the company needed a strong spring. Because of this, they were offering a 40% discount on new roofs. We instantly got excited, 40% off? What a great deal!! We picked up the phone immediately and scheduled for a representative to come out to our home. We were told that the entire quote would take 45 minutes, the representative ended up being at our house for three hours. The representative went over all of his products, explaining each product in great detail. He talked about how NU Look home design is one of the only two "platinum" contractors in the area. But that NU Look home design does platinum work at handy man prices. He told us about the two different packages, the "Conventional" (the bare bones) and the "Performance" (all of the options). He told us we could mix and match the different products we wanted, so we decided on the architectural shingles, with the premium edgers (17 cents more than the standard edgers.) These were the exact same products that the previous contracting company was going to use. I was expecting the quote to be lower than the quote we received from the previous contracting company, especially since NU Look home design had advertised a 40% discount. The representative wrote the price on a piece of paper... $27,000. I literally choked. He told us that was the 12 month price (as in, that price is good for 12 months) he said if we wanted to book it that day, he could drop the price to $13,000. Comparing that quote to the $4800 quote we had received, we thought the quote NU Look gave us was a little steep. After a few hours of going back and forth with the representative, he finally dropped the price to $6100. At this point we just did not want to do business with this contractor, our gut feeling was that a company that is greedy enough to try to screw homeowners into overpaying by thousands and thousands of dollars, and then try to pressure us into making a decision that day, was not a company we were comfortable doing business with. We didn't tell the representative all of this of course, and politely declined his offer. We ended up getting one more quote from a contractor that specializes in roof. They went up to look at our roof, which is something that the NU Look home design representative did not do-not even go into our attic. Our new contractor quoted us $4000 for the exact same products that NU Look and the previous contractor were going to use. I recommend homeowners receive different quotes from various contractors before making the decision to go with this company.

This company appears to be very dishonest in its radio advertising regarding their pricing and discount claims. Asking someone to pay a $49,000 figure for a roofing job which should probably be less than $20,000 is nothing short of a rip off! The whole experience was bizarre. Do not do business with this company despite what seem to be good reviews by some. I would not have any confidence in their pricing or work based on their sales people.
Description of Work: Scheduled Fairfax office for roofing proposal based on radio ad and 50% off. Requested best and final price up front and no games. Nu Look sent a very inexperienced and poor salesman to our home for a 45 minute visit which turned out to be more than 2 hours; we couldn't get him to leave. The proposal was for a roof which was measured at 44 squares of material and removal of existing 2 layers. Instead of a professional proposal and price we got a $49,000 figure written on a sales brochure with nothing to back up the number. He then asked what we wanted to pay after we said it was way too high. Finally got an email a few days later which reduced the price to $25,000 with some detail but missing almost every important item which would be in a normal contract.

Their communications were excellent and they met their commitments re: time of delivery of materials and time of installation. They also saved me some money by insisting that they would not have to pull off the plywood under the tiles unless they found the wood to have the degradation problem caused by poor fire protection coating; only two sheets were found and replaced. Another bidder said that he would have to pull all the plywood off without inspection.

So far, no issues with the gutters, but the Nu Look selling "technique" is absolutely intolerable, they wheel/deal/spin for 3+ hours when coming to show goods and provide price quote. Their price quote is insanely high and then they come in with a "special" price just for you that is more reasonable. I don't have a problem with their product, but I will NEVER recommend them because I wouldn't want any of my friends/family to have to deal with their horrible, schmoozy selling technique! Worse than the stereotypical "used car salesman"! I also dropped their rating for punctuality because their supply guy dropped the gutter material off when we weren't expecting, made my husband come help him take the supplies off the truck, and we had to worry about all the materials sitting in our yard overnight.

My one complaint with Nu Look and all Home Show companies is the pressure to make a sale. The salesman will pressure and make deals all night long to get your business. Only use Nu Look if you are serious about new windows, roof or door and hold out for the best deal possible. They will always return to your house, but not with the deals they offer the first time.
Description of Work: Per agreement, price is not allowed to be discussed. Overall, we are very happy with the work done and the services provided. The contract called for a different color trim than was installed on the house. We didn't catch this when we signed the contract. The installers came back with the proper color trim with no additional costs. We are on our second custom finished door. Our first door arrived scratched and with a few dings. The company verified our claim, ordered and installed a new door at no additional costs. With the cool winter this year, the new door and tight seal is a huge energy saver.

First - DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY Based upon their reviews on Angie's list and after seeing Nu Look at the home remodeling show, I decided to get a bid for a new roof from them. Chadd Costrilli and Adam came to my home and promised a 40% discount off the regular price of a new roof since I had attended the show. We discussed their products, their company and their work ethic. They looked in my attic and also took measurements and looked at the outside of my house. Then the hard sell began. Chadd said the regular price was $23,000+ based upon the size of my roof and the products I was purchasing. This included 2 lies. 1) $23,000+ is not the regular price - it's about double the regular price and 2) the measurements they used to quote me a price were about 138% of the actual size of the roof. (Roofers use and quot;squaresand quot; to determine the size and price of a roof - mine measures 34 X 46 or 1564 sq. ft. which equals 15 and quot;squaresand quot; in roofers terms.) 10% is then added for waste and my roof then equals 1720 or 17 squares NOT the 25 squares used by Chadd. Also Chadd and Adam failed to find that my roof had 2 layers of shingles (despite me telling them that - they insisted there was only one) which is not surprising since this would just mean more money for them and more cost for me since removing extra layers of shingles costs extra due to the extra labor. (Clearly they either were not truthful about having experience in roofing or they were out to defraud the customer because as all the other roofers who looked in my attic said - with all the nails you could see this would obviously lead you to believe that there was more than one layer of shingles.) After I found out all this information I called the owner of the company (Patrick) and told him about the disturbing information I had learned about his salesmen and their tactic of doubling the regular price in order to them show the 40% discount. He gave me all sorts of excuses - but never denied that his salesmen had done what I said (His excuses included the high cost of being on Angie's list and getting a booth at the remodeling show.) Patrick's response was to offer me to get other comparable bids and he would beat them by 5%. (Why I beleived him given his salesmen's tactics I cannot tell you.) I provided a near exact match from another company which uses the exact same materials and warranties which was about $2000 less but also included brand new gutters, downs and guards. I have heard nothing from Nu Look since then. Since this company has demonstrated they cannot be trusted and despite their claims and rating on Angie's list their work ethic is to lie to customers and try and soak them for every penny - I think it best for both of us if they return my down payment of $4000 and we go our separate ways. They have spent no funds so they are not out any money except for the time for Chadd to review the other bids from other companies - something which is for normal companies just part of doing business.

This is for the Nu Look Home Design sales office based out of 9932 Main Street, Fairfax, VA. We stumbled on Nu Look Home Design at the home improvement show at the convention center in Chantilly, VA, in the late fall 2013. The salesman was out to the house with the typical sales pitch in November. Price was in line with other quotes we had received and we knew that the garden window would be an expensive part of all this. We liked the design of the and quot;gardenand quot; window for over the sink the best (includes a and quot;workingand quot; casement window with screen on each side.) We also replaced two double-hung windows in the the bay as well as the large fixed (and quot;pictureand quot;) window in the middle. The double hung windows leaked air very badly in spite of putting in new air seals (just a bad design.) We put casement style windows in the bay on either side of the large window. We also replaced the awning window in our master bath as the old one was all but impossible to operate and it leaked water in a hard driving rain. All these windows are on the back of our house. We sit on a hill overlooking a pond and community common area. Very lovely view but with a north-western exposure, it gets a lot of wind and it can make for a cold area in the kitchen in the winter around the old bay double hung windows and old garden window. We noticed an immediate improvement in warmth in this area of the kitchen with the new windows. The windows are manufactured by Alside Window Systems in Akron, OH. It took the Nu Look Home team two days to install all the windows over two weeks due to the weather. (It was a cold and messy January 2014!) Not a problem for us. The installation team was very careful when working inside putting down drop cloths and removing shoes. Open cavities around the windows were filled with spray foam insulation. They cleaned up the outside the best they could considering we had a layer of snow out there. The only hiccup in this whole process was pricing. As I said, the price was within the range of other estimates we had received. About two weeks after receiving our estimate, the salesman called to say he had made a mistake in the estimate; he priced our bay windows as a single unit, not as three individual windows (we verified this.) After some discussion, we agreed to split the difference. I am sure they still made a profit on it! Bottom line is that we exceptionally pleased with the new windows, especially the garden window over the sink. It looks a lot better than the old one ( ! ) and there are absolutely no air leaks.
Description of Work: Replaced a "garden" window over the sink, three windows in a bay, and an awning window in the master bath. Replaced all exterior trim covering the window frames once windows were installed.

We heard a radio ad and I checked Angie's List, and saw good reviews, so we contacted them. A representative came to the house on time, and presented us with the details. He was clear and concise and answered all of our questions. We warned him that we had a strict conservancy architectural review board, to which he said they had a lot of experience working with conservancy boards. NU Look actually filled out all of the conservancy paperwork, showed it to us to get our approval, and then NU Look submitted it to the conservancy board. We haven't had a company do that before - we normally have to write it up and submit it ourselves whenever we have work done to the house. The board passed the application without a problem. We signed the contract the same day that we met with the representative, and scheduled the appointment for material drop-off and for the actual work. They dropped off the material when they said they would. They came early in the morning on the day of installation, and worked hard all day, finishing in one day. They had told us that it would take one or two days. Two weeks before installation, an ice storm dropped a large branch on our roof, creating a 6-inch diameter hole in the roof. We let them know in advance that the branch and the hole were there. On the day of installation, the NU Look team took down the branch and repaired the hole at no extra cost. We paid the same amount we had negotiated with the representative on that first day we met him; there were no hidden costs. We had an excellent experience with NU Look. Everyone was on time, courteous and very helpful. The roof looks great. We highly recommend this company.

We had this company come to our house for an estimate for a new front entry door and storm door. Two salesmen came and stayed for three hours during which we were given a very high pressure sales pitch that was never-ending. We finally signed the contract because they promised us we had three business days to rescind. We did rescind the next day because we had an uneasy feeling about the company and what would be the quality of installation. They are new to the northern VA area and we didn't want to use a company who was so new to the area. To be fair, they had the lowest price of the three companies we got estimates from, however, their high-pressure sales tactics and apparent lack of knowledge of their product turned us off.

The contractor said they would be to my house between 7:30 and 8:00. I noticed their truck outside of my house before then but they waited until 8:00 AM to knock on the door. They finished by noon. The shingles seemed wavy at first and the contractor said the sun had to shine on them a while. Now the shingles are flat and the roof looks great. Our neighbor was so impressed he got the contact info. The sales guy offered us a deal that was 50% of the original estimate. I feel like that was a sales tactic. Also, He offered us 15 lb felt and charged extra when we upgraded to 30 lb felt. Two other companies offered a similar service for around the same price and theirs included tarp like material. My husband liked the sales guy from Nu Look best so that is who we went with.

All the work was performed in one day by a seven-man crew. The team was well prepared and very professional, worked tirelessly throughout the day and did a complete cleanup and removal of all debris. All materials were delivered and placed on the roof the previous day. I spoke to the foreman at the start of the day over a few things I wanted them to do, such as leave the drain lip on the chimney flashing, be careful working around the gutter leaf guards and eliminating a and quot;droopand quot; in the center of the roof peak. He ensured that all were done to my satisfaction. I'd strongly recommend this company for those desiring a quality roof installation.
Description of Work: Removed old shingles and underlying layers of felt liner , also removed old non-operating roof exhaust fan, replaced 2 sheets of plywood. Then installed new liner, ice guard, roof vent the length of roof, replaced all flashing, and installed the new architectural style shingles on the modified hip roof of the house. All materials were provided by the company.

Martin came and gave us an estimate. It was pretty high but he managed to knock it down by half. I figured that's just their sales technique. Martin told us they don't recommend Deck Defense because there's no real advantage to it. He said they use 30 LB felt. On our estimate it says 15 LB felt. My husband and I both remember him saying they'd use 30 LB felt, so in that respect I feel we experience a little bait and switch. I also want to know why two other contractors were able to come in at close to the same price plus they use deck defense. We are going to use Nu Look based in part on our research of their work so far and our desire to support smaller, local businesses. I will update this when the work is completed.

A representative showed up at my door and told me that they were in our neighborhood and noticed that we needed a new roof. If we are interested, they could come and give me an estimate which would be good for a whole year. It would only take 45 minutes. Their representative showed up the next morning. I told him that we are aware of the roof situation but do not wish to replace it right away. I was VERY clear and repeated myself many times that I am only interested in a quote as we still need to figure out our finances and priorities. He took over an hour taking measurements and doing some calculations. We have a small single story house with one roof so no complex math. After that the terrible negotiation started. He kept trying to convince me to agree to commit and asked what would it take to change my mind. My answer was straight forward that we do not wish to do it right now. He then called his manager and started telling him the ordeal. The manager on the other line asked me the same questions through the salesman. My frustration grew bigger and I asked to speak to him directly and told him AGAIN that we do not wish to do it right now. As promised, you should give me a quote which is good for a year. He went on and on about why I should do it right away and that I should go online and check their reviews on Angie's List while they wait (I wish I did that as they have an average of B, not A as he stated). I realized that these guys were not going to listen to me and I was wasting my time with them. I then had to ask him to leave my house. It all took 2+ hours. The moral of the story: 1. They lied when they said they were working in the neighborhood. If anyone shows up at my door with this statement next time, I will ask them to show me where they are working. 2. They lied when they promised they will give me a quote which will be good for a year. They refused to do so. 3. They lied when they said it will take 45 minutes for this process. It will take 2+ hours so plan ahead. 4. I had told them up front I am only interested in a quote and they kept pushing me until I asked him to leave. They do not respect their customers.
Description of Work: They promised to give me just a quote when I was first contacted by them. It was supposed to take 45 minutes. Instead, they pressured me to commit right away and spent two hours in my house. Eventually I had to ask them to leave.

2 men were going door-to-door to get people to set up appts. I said I was interested in ONLY an estimate and it would only be me. I was very upfront that I only wanted an estimate at this time. I gave the representative my info. When he called to set up the time, he was told that according to the BBB, they could NOT make appts w/ only one of the home owners. I think the term is and quot; What a load of ----.and quot; Too bad for them, if I had a good encounter with a salesperson, they might be on my radar for our business. 9/17/13 ***UPDATE!! We are so sorry that you were misinformed. Let me correct our employee. It is not a requirement of the BBB that both homeowners are present for our estimates, it is our company policy. I'm sure you would have been more then capable of making decisions regarding your home. However often our employees travel to meet with prospective customers, free of charge I might add. Some customer feels they can make all the decisions regarding the home, however shortly after we begin to discuss options they inform us they would need to converse with their significant other. We have changed our policy on this countless times. It seems if we come out and meet with one person, often we have to come back for a second estimate.(Free of charge) If we ask that both homeowners be their we receive kick back. Our intention is to provide the best service possible for both our customers as well as our employees. I would ask that you please reconsider your review of our company. Poor reviews can cause great impact on our ability to obtain future business. We would appreciate your consideration on this matter. Again I would like to apologize on behalf of Nu Look Home Design, Inc. Thank you

The Sales man was very helpful in providing pricing and selecting colors. He was not a high pressure sales person. Very nice guy. But he did his part of the job very well. Contractor arrived on time and replaced the windows. Work was prompt and the mess was cleaned up and hauled away. The next phase was replacing the siding and drain pipes. The workers arrived on time and proceed to remove the old siding and install the new siding that I selected. The mess was much more than with the windows all of it was hauled away. Very painless for me. My electric bill has dropped substantially and the house is much quieter than before the installation. I would recommend them.

If you don't like hard-sell tactics or have an idea of what you want to spend ahead of time, then don't contact this contractor or agree to have them give you a quote. That is the method they use to go to market and they have obviously been quite successful using those techniques. We feel we paid a fair price for this market for the roof, maybe a little high side. We agreed to get the quote from one of their door-to-door marketing guys, since we were in the process of remodeling the rest of our exterior. Although our roof was not in urgent need of repair, it would need replacing within the next couple years and a roof is not the sort of thing you want to wait to start leaking before you have a contractor go to work on it. We had another company quote us in the same price point a year earlier, so we knew what to expect. The salesperson was very polite and friendly, but of course used all the hard-sell tactics in the book. We started out at more than double the price we paid and finally agreed to a number that we felt was fair and were comfortable paying, considering the quality of materials and warranties offered. However, like I said earlier, if you don't like hard-sells or negotiation, then don't call this contractor. They were able to schedule the work very quickly, and the job was done in one day.

Nu Look was referred to my by neighbors who had used them last year to replace all the windows in their home. We needed to replace the builder-grade windows in our 15-year old home because of their poor thermal qualities increasing infiltration of water and outside air. Chad, the Nu Look sales rep came to our home and explained the various options they offered and provided a competitive price. We accepted. Within a few days, Tom, who would be the supervisor on our project, came exactly as scheduled. He took all the measurements and explained how the work would be performed. This was large project involving 30+ windows and a door leading from our family room to the deck. The windows were of many sizes and shapes, and the upper floor presented some interesting challenges in terms of access from the outside. It took about five weeks for the new windows to be custom-made. The Nu Look folks were very accommodating in scheduling the project around our availability. On the day the project was to begin, Tom and his crew showed up exactly as scheduled and immediately went to work. The efficiency and methodical way they did this project was nothing short of amazing. For 2-1/2 days they were and quot;all work and no messing aroundand quot;. They were very careful not to damage anything inside our house, and answered all our questions as the project progressed. They completely cleaned up all the debris created by removal of the old windows and frames/sills, installed tinted trim around the exterior of all the new windows, and ensured all interior areas were left spotless. This was an expensive project but I believe we got our money's worth. I'd recommend Nu Look to others needing this type work done in their home.

Response from Nu Look Roofing, Siding, and Windows
Dear [removed member names], Thank you very much for your kind words. I will notify our window/door installer, Tom, of the the compliment that you gave him as well. I personally enjoyed working with the two of you on this project and I look forward to working with you or anyone you refer to us in the near future! Please contact me on my cell phone if anything else is needed. Thank You, Chadd Castrilli

This place is a joke. Their sales tactics, their prices, despicable. When the initial appointment was set up, they wanted to be sure all home owners would be present. Fine, we scheduled a day, rare as it is, when both my wife and I would be home. That day came and my wife ended up having to work, so it was only me when the representative arrived. After a few minutes he noticed that the and quot;mrs.and quot; was not around, and I said she would not be joining us. This was a problem and the rep called his supervisor, who I then spoke with. Chadd, the supervisor, informed me that because of being burned in the past, their insurance now required all home owners to be present. I understand this if we were actually signing a contact that day, but I was only looking for a quote, comparing this company to all others from which I was collecting quotes. I was told it was not possible to give a quote to only me, so the call was ended, and the rep went on his way. Later that day I received a call from Chadd saying they had made an exception and he would personally come out to my house to do the quote. Fine, we set an appointment time for the following week. Chadd arrived on time the following week and I could tell from the start this was not likely the company I would end up choosing to replace my windows. Way too much of a smooth talker. Anyhow, I informed Chadd that I was interested in an entry level window to replace my 22 year old windows. I had sat through many window presentations at that point and knew what I wanted out of a window company and its windows. Chadd didn't seem to care/hear this and continued to slog through his entire presentation complete with all the information about the mid level and top of the line models they sell. Even at the end when he was pricing everything out for me, he wasted more of my time by manually calculating the cost of these mid and top level models that I was very clear was not on my radar. Speaking of pricing: Out of six window companies I received a quote from, this was by far the highest priced. We're talking $4000+ MORE!!! His pricing calculations seemed to just appear -- all the extras(grids, argon filled, low E, etc) were just tacked on for the final quote. I have no idea what he was actually charging for those features. On top of that, I have a standard 6 foot patio door -- I know this because the other 5 companies have said as much. Yet Chadd somehow determined that it was a few inches short of 6 feet. But don't worry, for a few hundred dollars more, Nu Look can manage to make a standard six footer work! What a crock! At that point I knew this guy and his company was total B.S. At the end of the presentation, when I was obviously not in favor of the prices being offered and was trying to put him off politely by saying that I would have to discuss with my wife, Chadd pushed me to call my wife at work right then and there to see what she would say. I made a fake phone call just to appease him and said I could not contact her. At this point I really just wanted him out of my house. I encourage anyone considering Nu Look for a window quote to simply move on -- there are many others who will respect your time and not attempt to upsell you on models in which you are clearly not interested.
Description of Work: After months of hounding me to give me a quote for windows, I finally relented. What a waste of time.

He was excellent. He did a good job and he was very professional. They did not try to hard sell me and they explained each type of siding in detail. I did agree to their service and the only reason I did not go through with their service was because I ended up going the solar route. I was very pleased with this company and the guy who came out was terrific.
Description of Work: This was an estimate for siding. They quoted a couple of different prices depending on the quality of the siding and one was $8,000.00 and one was $3,500.00.

They were wonderful. They went out of their way to help us out. I really liked them as we thought we had significant gutter damage and they told us it was just the wood behind the gutters. They were very honest and did not try to take advantage. I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: They put on a new roof and replaced the board that holds the gutters up.

We agreed to schedule an appointment after meeting a office manager at the Capitol Home Show. I received a message on Monday indicating an appointment on Tuesday evening at 6:00 and requesting a call back because they needed information. When I called back, the representative could not find a record of the appointment and it took several minutes for him to find it. Finally, it turned out he didn't need any info and so we confirmed the appointment. My wife and I came home early to meet the estimator. Twenty minutes after the estimator didn't show, I received a call from the company saying they had been trying to call during the afternoon but because I didn't call back (again,) they had sent the estimator somewhere else. I was already on the fence about this company due to the mixed reviews here, and this now seems way too difficult given other good options.
Description of Work: Attempted to schedule an estimate for replacement of several windows.

I received 5 estimates and Nu Look was in the competitive range for the ProVia door (just about everyone sells the same high quality product). When I called the representative for a final bid (after talking to 5 vendors, I found out specfically what I finally wanted), a different sales rep came. After I asked the new sales representative to remove the unnecessary lockset and to paint the whole door just one color instead of a different color outside and inside, the price actually went up (compared to my initial estimate). What I thought I was going to be a quick 20 min remeasure and itemized estimate, turned into a 2-hour high-pressure sales event. While their primary work is window replacement, if you only need a front door, there are other contractors out there selling the same product for less and without the high-pressure tactic.
Description of Work: Remove and replace the front door and 2 sidelights with ProVia steel. Also replace wood and wrap the panels above and below the door.

Work was never done due to a complete lack of business ethics on the part of the company.
Description of Work: The sales person came by and gave me a price of $25,000.00 for a new roof with average grade materials. After I told him that was way out of the ball park he agreed to drop it to $15,000.00 if I signed up for a promotional program with them. The whole experience left me with the feeling that no matter what I did with this company I would walk away feeling ripped off. I don't like gimmicks or "special programs". I want your best offer right off the bat or nothing at all. Would never do business with this company again

Overall, I ended up with a good roof for the agreed price, although there were some bumps along the way. First, this company uses an extremely hard-sell (big discount if you sign the contract immediately, but you can't wait to think it over; their reasons for the rush didn't seem credible; etc.). I found this unpleasant and annoying, though the individuals I dealt with were quite personable. I decided to use Nu-Look despite the high-pressure sales tactics, because they agreed to a fixed price, regardless of how much or how little board needed replacing. I made sure that each of the key promises was spelled out in the final contract, even though this meant writing certain things in and initialing it. When we got the job scheduled, the crew showed up on time. Fortunately, I'd taken the day off, and I watched pretty carefully. Still, it was partly just luck that I noticed several problems, eg, failure to replace several boards that were broken or rotted; attachment of drip guard (?) without removing prior faulty repairs underneath; etc. When I pointed out each of my concerns, they examined the work then promptly made good on each one, even if it meant tearing out some of their work to make the repair. They were very courteous and cooperative about this, and though the problems shouldn't have occurred in the first place, the final job was well done. I would use this company again if I were confident (a) that the price was fair, and (b) that I could keep an eye on how the work was done.
Description of Work: Replaced my roof.
