Description of Work: Mill Direct Floor Coverings came and did accurate measurements and assisted with the selection of appropriate flooring for our kitchen. We had had a fridge flood and needed to replace several appliances, which proved to be complicated and Mill Direct cooperatively came back several times enabling us to complete the project successfully and well. I would hire them again and recommend them to others.

Description of Work: I walked in on a whim, and I'm thrilled I did. I was looking for a "pretty good" regular carpet to recarpet the basement and playroom, ~900 sq feet. I knew I wanted a premium carpet pad, and good carpet that would last 10-15 years, but didn't want to break the bank. They showed me stain master brand and the like, but what sold me was the in-stock carpet they had. It was a dollar less per square foot, and looks and feels great. No fibers coming up during vacuuming either. Price was quoted as an "installed" per sq foot price, and Lowes and HD couldn't touch it. Totally inclusive, took up and hauled away old carpet, recarpeted 12 stairs, laid new pad and carpet and didn't have to remove baseboards for $2300. They also honored the Angie's List coupon. Great installers, moved our furniture and super careful with our stuff. I will ALWAYS go to them for future flooring needs.

The carpet was removed and replaced, and it is great! I am very pleased with how it looks and how it wears so far. The crew that did the installation was very kind and considerate. They were careful with my furniture, some of which are antiques. And they even took the time and effort to eliminate many of the squeaks and creaks in my flooring before the pad and carpet were installed. But my experience with the wood floors on the stairs was the complete opposite. A different crew of men arrived to tackle the stairs. They first estimated that the removal and replacement would take about four hours. But not long after starting, the estimate was bumped up to eight hours. Sadly, even that amount of time was way off. The work covered parts of three days, and is far from being a finely finished product. During the installation of new steps and risers, I discussed the height of the landing that is midway up the stairs. I explained to the men that if they put the wood planks on top of the plywood subfloor which the carpet sat on, then the height of the step up to the landing would be higher than the step below by 3/4" and, similarly, the height of the step up from the landing would be 3/4" lower than the steps that followed. This is because the plywood subfloor is level with the lip that comes off the landing, and had carpeting wrapped around it previously. They understood the height differences caused by replacing the carpet with wood, but didn?t believe that it should be a problem. I explained that having a variation of 1.5" in step height sounded to me like it could be a real safety problem, and asked that they remove the plywood base and install the wood planks onto the 2x4s supporting the plywood rather than on top of the plywood. Despite my request, they refused and insisted on installing the wood planks on top of the plywood. I was quite annoyed. (Who wants to walk down stairs while half asleep when the steps aren't all the same height?) In the process the lip had to be removed and installed at the new height, and as a result, didn?t fit into the notches in the stringers on the side. So I had empty notches in the stringers after installation. The problems only multiplied from there. The top step was supposed to fit cleanly with the new carpet Mill Direct just installed. But they ran into problems with how the carpeted second floor met the riser for the top step. In the process of removing and replacing the top step, they cracked/damaged the inside stringer that holds the step in place. And the riser height and top lip caused a real tripping hazard when attempting to walk down the stairs. A tripping hazard at a top step is serious no matter what, but in my house with three small children, I can?t believe they would leave it that way, especially now that the stairs are wooden. The problems continued. At the end of the first day, I noticed a wooden molding installed under the lip of each step that hangs over the riser. While the molding matches the steps in color, I didn?t ask for it and wasn?t expecting it to be installed. The reason it is there, however, is so that the gap between the riser and the step is not visible. And the reason there is a gap between the riser and the step is because some of the risers were cut just a tad bit too short. Well that may be fine if I wanted the wooden molding, but I don?t. I wanted to paint the risers the same color as the baseboards, which Mill Direct wouldn?t do. So I?m left with either painting the molding too, or removing it and having the gaps visible. Either way, I lose. Once we were able to walk on the stairs, I noticed that the wood planks installed on the landing were not identical to the planks installed on the first floor of my house. While they did use the correct type of wood (oak), the planks were the wrong width. Plus, half of the new steps creaked when I walked on them. Only two of the steps previously had done so, and I hoped the new steps would eliminate all the creaking sounds. Not the case at all. It is much worse. Unhappy with the finished product, I called and emailed Mill Direct to discuss the problems. They sent the crew out again. Before they installed the correct planks, I asked that they be long enough that they fit under the baseboard so there would be no need for a ¼ round to hide a gap between the wood floor and the baseboard. They removed the wrong planks from the landing, and removed the 3/4" plywood underneath. They then installed more 2x4s to support the wooden planks and installed the planks so that they were at the correct height. And the lip was reinstalled fitting into the notches on the side stringers. But it isn?t as good as it sounds. During the second installation of the landing, the crew must not have used a level. Standing on the first floor looking at the stairs, it is obvious to anyone that the landing is sloped from left to right. Further, not all the planks reach under the baseboard to eliminate the need for a ¼ round, like I asked. While they left the ¼ round for me to install, they wouldn?t install it themselves because the landing is now lower than the baseboards. And they wouldn?t remove and install the baseboards to the new height because it isn?t in the contract. So I have to hire someone else to do that, or do it myself. They also tried to fix the tripping hazard at the top step. In doing so, however, they eliminated the lip at the top step such that the riser is the same height as the subfloor. When standing on the second floor next to the top step, the floor started to sag because when they removed the lip, they didn?t attach the floor to a floor joist. And apart from that, the damaged stringer for the stairs can?t be replaced without turning into a major demolition and reconstruction problem in my house. So the problems went from bad to worse. I called Mill Direct and they sent the crew yet again. On arrival, they proceeded to insult me by saying it wouldn?t be a problem if my wife hadn?t complained about it! Aside from being rude and unprofessional, they did eventually fix the top step. But all the other problems remain, and it leaves me quite disappointed about their lack of quality workmanship and professional demeanor. Besides, I was the one complaining about it?not my wife! As you can imagine, I am sorry I decided to upgrade the steps to wood from the carpet. The problems remain, and I don?t want that crew of men back in my house to fix it. As a result, I won?t recommend Mill Direct to anyone.
Description of Work: I visited the store in Fairfax and discussed carpet and hardwood flooring with the salesmen. I shopped around and got other estimates, some of which were lower. I asked Mill Direct to match the prices, and they did. So I contracted with them to: 1. Remove and replace all the carpet and pad in my house, including all of the second floor (except bathrooms), and two rooms of carpeting on the first floor; and 2. Remove the carpeting on the stairs, remove the plywood risers, remove the wood steps, and replace with oak steps and risers, and install wood planks for the landing that match the wood planks existing on the first floor of my house.

We wanted to do a big job - replace the carpet upstairs and on the staircase, install Brazilian cherry hardwood in our living room and dining room (to match the "test") flooring we had them install in the family room a few years prior), and to install tile flooring in our kitchen, powder room, and laundry/utility area. Although we are longtime satisfied customers of Mill Direct, like everyone, we want to make sure we are getting the best price on a big job like this, so we did shop and price options at a couple other places, including Home Depot and another small local installer recommended by a neighbor. So when we got to Mill Direct we had a general idea if what we wanted (colors, materials, features ) and how much it would cost. We always work with Mike Mason there and after we told him what we wanted he left us to look through the showroom. The showroom may seem smaller than some, but there is a very large selection of products to choose from, and many price points available. We had no problem finding what we wanted. Mike came to our home to do all the measuring for the job and sent us a quote within a few days. His quote was 25% lower than the others, as usual. We scheduled the job with the upstairs in a separate week from the downstairs to accommodate our family of 5 and pets. The crews Mike sent were, as always, courteous, professional, quick, responsive to any questions or concerns, and left the job spotless. We were very pleased, and the overall job was about $9,000. About a year later, and within a couple of weeks of the expiration of our warranty on the job, we started hearing a popping sound when walking over some of the tiles in the kitchen and the grout started to fail around a few tiles. We called Mike and he came over to take a look. He bent down, walked the floor and heard a couple of more pops, took a deep breath and said "That shouldn't be happening," and told us he would replace the entire floor in the kitchen and entry for free. No hastles. He offered to replace the tile in the powder room/laundry /utility area as well, but we declined because there was no sign of the popping there and that space did not adjoin the kitchen/ entry areas. Mike explained (and the crew he sent to replace the tile confirmed ) that the original installation crew must not have realized that we were using porcelain tile, not ceramic, and had mixed the adhesive improperly. Our tile had been discontinued, so we headed back to the showroom. Mike gave us a range of price points to use when picking our replacement product and we were able to find one that almost matched. Mike generously repeated his offer to replace all of the tile in the powder room and laundry /utility since the tile would not be an exact match but we declined, as the areas did not abut eachother and we felt the tile was similar enough. The crew came and did the job over 3 days. The new tile looks beautiful and we haven't had a problem with it since. In the 17 years we have been working with Mike at Mill Direct, covering 7 jobs worth many thousands of dollars, we have always been completely pleased with the quality of service, product, and installation. This was the only job that had any hiccups and we were very satisfied with the swift and professional way the situation was solved. We will continue to call on Mike Mason and Mill Direct for all of our flooring needs and gladly recommend them to family and neighbors.
Description of Work: We have been very satisfied customers of Mill Direct since 1994, when we first stopped into their shop as new homeowners looking for a remnant to recarpet a 10'x9' bedroom. Over the years we have called on Mike Mason at Mill Direct to carpet our basement (twice), install lenolium in the kitchen and utility room, install hardwood throughout our lower level, install carpet on the stairs and upper level, and to install porcelain tile in our entry as well as that same kitchen and utility area. In addition, when we built out a retail store in 1996 we hired Mill direct to install carpet and lenolium in that 3000 square foot space as well. Most recently, Mill Direct was here to replace the tile they had installed in our kitchen and utility area the year prior. The original job had cost $3,000 and was replaced for free without hastle and to our complete satisfaction. The story of this job explains why we only go to Mill Direct.

We were moving into a 20-year old house which still had the original builder's grade carpet, so we knew we wanted to replace it--and this meant over 1,500 square feet of carpet, so we knew we wanted to save as much as possible. We shopped around a couple places to educate ourselves about what was out there. Both Mill Direct and the other firm were very helpful in educating us to the different types of carpeting, pads, and why we might choose one carpet type over another. They had a wide selection at many different price points, as well as other flooring options. After that, someone came out and measured all the rooms in the house where the carpets were to be replaced: three rooms on the main floor, a stairway, and all of the top floor save the bathrooms (hallway and 4 rooms). We has been able to get some free samples We ordered some additional samples to compare them all. Finally, once we made a decision on the type of carpet, they gave us an estimate, which was over $1,000 less from the next closest estimate. We hired them to install the carpet. It took a week or so for them to get all the carpet from the factory (it was a lot to carpet), but then they were able to remove all the old carpet and install it within one day. The staircase switches angles at its landings, and they were able to carpet it all neatly with the "New York" style of tightly fitting the carpet to the wood (versus the "waterfall" style where the vertical carpet would be loose). We were very pleased with the product, service, and process and would use them again.
Description of Work: Mill Direct helped us choose an appropriate general carpeting through samples at their showroom, came out and measured the exact square footage needed, came and installed all the carpeting in one day (7 rooms, hallway, and stairway).

We were very happy with them and have used them several times within the last twelve years. They have very good pricing as well as a good selection. Their installers are reliable; they come on time, finish the work on time and also address any concerns right away that might come up. We've just been very happy with them and will continue to use them when needed.
Description of Work: We've used them many times for flooring. Most recently they installed hardwood floor in two rooms, ceramic tile in three rooms and carpeting for the entire upstairs (a total of five rooms/hallways).

The problem was that they sent people to install the carpet who were inadequate. They reinstalled new carpet in two rooms, but the other room I am still dissatisfied with. As time has gone on I can see more shoddy work in the one room.
Description of Work: We went and ordered the carpet. We really liked the sales person. What went wrong was the installation. We bought carpet for the top floor. They replaced our living and dining room carpeting. The carpet is buckling in some places. There are some lumps. We called them back and they gave us new carpet in the living and dining room. They reinstalled the carpet and it looks much better. When they came back to look at it I asked them to take off their shoes and they refused.

Mill Direct came recommended from neighbors and was favorably reviewed in Angie's List. Kevin was able to come estimate the amount of carpet within a day of calling. He was a bit late but was extremely knowledgeable and quick in his estimate. Although he came prepared with carpet samples, we opted to go to the showroom to make our selection. Kevin promised and kept an installation date that worked with our other contractors. The carpet looks and feels great; the installers were great. We are extremely satisfied.
