Beautiful job - the house looks fabulous! Estimator was prompt, very knowledgeable, and straightforward. I selected this firm over others because they clearly understood the proper installation of the Hardie product, understood and answered my questions, made sensible suggestions, discussed the potential problems, and didn't give me a hard sell. The crew was polite, professional, highly skilled, worked with great care and efficiency, and kept the work area clean.

EMPTY PROMISES... Colonial contacted us after a hail storm promising to handle negotiations with our insurance company to ensure we had full coverage on all damage. Their responsiveness was fantastic until we actually signed the contract after which it was almost impossible to get in touch with them. They missed one appointment with our estimator, did little to help with an initial low estimate from the insurance company but were very quick to respond when we called and said we had the claim check for the work to begin. Additionally they failed to identify additional damage to the home - luckily we found it in time to file an amended claim a few days before our claim period expired. The crew showed up on time to do the work and did a good job on the roof and gutters as well as cleaning up when completed. We had a screen ripped due to falling debris, notified Colonial the next morning about it and patiently waited almost a month for them to come back to repair the screen. I actually told the sales guy the final check was written and in an envelope waiting for them to fix the screen and pick it up but still no response on this minor customer service issue. Finally their collections person called looking for the final payment and was shocked it had been sitting there waiting for them to fix the screen and pick up the check. A year later we have some pieces of the roof that have blown up. We've contacted Colonial twice and other than more empty promises of follow-up we have yet to hear from them. This would be a great company to work with if they ever learned how to deliver on promises and follow up on customer service. Our future business for remodeling and other home work will not be offered to Colonial.

No complaints at all. Some people on here have complained about price. I can't speak for that and the bottom line for me was that Colonial worked with my insurance company to pin down the cost of the job. This took time, it involved the insurance company coming out to assess the job, back and forth discussions between Colonial and the insurance company, and the bottom line was that the insurance company, using their on-site assessor, agreed to pay for the job. Colonial took care of all of that. Could this have been over-priced? Sure, I guess it could be, but then Colonial managed to get an expert assessor overpay for the job and somehow that just doesn't make sense to me. My dealings with Colonial were prompt and professional. The on-site work crews were great. We love the final product. In my take on this company Colonial is a good business to work with for this kind of job. Now that said, when you're not paying out of pocket and your insurance company AND bank, especially the bank (that was a horror story) are involved don't expect this sort of job to go fast, be ready for it to take time and to be aggravated; in this case not aggravated by the contractor but by your bank.

The work done was very good and we are quite satisfied with the results. It did take several months to get the job done. Most of that was caused by delays in payment from the bank (The work was to repair hail damage and we had to go through the insurance company and the bank). The roof was done in 3 days, the siding was done in 2 days and the gutters were done in 1 day. We also added some repairs todamaged wood which were done very well. It just took a long time to get started and get done. I was in no hurry so I didn't push them. They were always very courteous and responsive when I did contact them.

Between early winter of 2010 and spring of 2011 nothing much was happening. We tried to contact the provider which was the salesman and he left the company. I recall making phone calls but I guess the company was in the process of moving (5305 B Lee Highway Arlington VA). We lost contact with them. We did not have the means to pay for the roof. We were just trying to get the bathroom done. We got emails back from them telling us that the salesmen was no longer there. They kept ignoring about the samples we wanted. I lost contact with them until spring of this year. I sent him an email about the work. I got no response from the emails. I emailed them again on May 5th. Still no word on the work and the deposit. All I'm asking for is the refund. Update as of 09/20/2013: They did respond to us. We did get some resolution to this after contacting Angie's List.
Description of Work: They wrote up a contract to do work from hail damage on the roof and in the master bathroom. The contract was written November 5, 2010 and at that time we gave him a deposit of $2811.36 we were mandated to give a 3rd of the total cost.

The member needs to remove this complaint, as it is invalid. We promptly and courteously issued the refund to her, per her request at the end of her "review". Furthermore, we were never made aware of the member posting this information on the Angie's List site until several months after the refund was issued and customer was content.

From start to finish, this siding and roofing job took 9 months. Mostly, the delays were due to my insurance company; but we did lose a few weeks due to dropped communication on the part of Colonial. That being said, it was totally worth the wait! The original salesman was very friendly and helpful with regard to submitting a claim to my insurance company. His knowledge of the procedure was crucial, because I had never done this before. He even came back twice to meet with the adjusters, to be sure that I would get all of the damage properly repaired. Once the work actually got under way, things went pretty quickly and smoothly. The quality of materials and level of workmanship more than met my expectations. It may have taken 9 months, but a beautiful new house was born!
Description of Work: There was hail damage to my siding and roof. I never went up on the roof, so I can't say for sure to what degree it was damaged. I do know that the leaks were causing damage to 2 bedroom ceilings. Full replacement of the roof was authorized very quickly. The damage to the siding was not severe and in fact the original insurance response was to repair the damaged areas. Fortunately, my consultant/salesperson informed me that in Maryland, if the repaired siding is not an exact match to the existing siding, then everything must be replaced. In that my siding was aluminum (ancient), it is no longer made. Consequently, the insurance company had to revise their estimate for full replacement. This process was what dramatically increased the original timeline. But when all was said and done, we got a new roof, new siding, new gutters and some repairs to the 2 effected bedrooms. My financial outlay was my insurance deductible--thus the low amount listed above.

From start to finish, I can?t say enough positive things about my experience with Michael Shannon and Colonial Remodeling. At every point during the process, Michael and his crew were punctual, professional, and exceeded my expectations. On-site, they were polite and kept the job site tidy and completed the project ahead of schedule. I would certainly use their services again in the future.

Michael Shannon was our project manager and he did a great job communicating with us and managing our expectations. The project hit a few bumps due to weather and a delay on some materials but nothing that was totally unreasonable. The bottom line is the guys were easy to deal with, they kept the site clean and they were attentive to details. Everyone was very collaborative about making sure the project was completed to our expectations. Once done... we noticed a few things about the Hardie siding; it gives the house a more finished look; during the last few storms that have come through the area we don?t hear the wind and finally, the addition is warmer. We love the way the deck looks and plan to enjoy it as soon as the weather cooperates with some warmer temperatures. I would recommend Colonial Remodeling; they did a good job for us.
Description of Work: Colonial Remolding replaced the 25 year old vinyl siding on our rear 2 story addition and front dormer with Hardie siding, they replaced and upgraded the standard picture framing around the windows with a composite material and more complete design elements. They also replaced the soffits, gutters, down spouts and our rear patio door. They also painted some exterior areas so that all painted surfaces would match the new siding. Once the siding project was finished they went on to replace the decking and railing on our existing 25 year old deck with an Azek product.

They installed True Guard gutter covers. They came back out in June and July to try and repair the covers but they still were not working properly. They then came back in August and removed the gutter covers from the home and stated they would provide us with a refund. I reached out to them in November to get the status on the refund and they did reply by email and stated they were still waiting and apologized for the delay. I gave them two more months before following up again in January and I am yet to get a reply or receive a refund.
Description of Work: They had previously completed work on our gutters and put gutter covers on. We had to call them back in June when we began to get a lot of rain and the gutter covers not working properly.

The job was estimated with great attention to detail and knowledge of construction by Michael Shannon, a very smart Project Manager for Colonial Remodeling. He was able to advise me on all the related issues such as window replacement and deck restoration. Although his bid was not the lowest, I chose to work with him because I trusted him and his company is the #1 Rated James Hardie Siding and Trim contractor in the area. Check out their website, colonialremodeling. The job went without a hitch. At every step of the way, Michael supervised and communicated well with his workers and with me. The workers are so proficient at what they do that the old siding and damaged insulation came down and new went up in less than a week, just before the hurricane that hit Washington this fall. I really appreciated their thoroughness in cleaning up the site and protecting my property. The next steps were carpentry repairs to a sluggish sliding door, fixed by an ingenious carpenter. Then painting of siding and deck. The painter bought small amounts of paint in order to make sure that I was happy with the color choices before proceeding. Once again, every effort was made to do a quality job and to do what I had asked them to do. Many neighbors have complimented me on the job Colonial Remodeling did. My sunroom went from a weathered, cracked cedar exterior to a beautiful, clean exterior painted to blend perfectly with its surroundings. If you are fussy about quality and if you like jobs to go according to plan, Colonial Remodeling is worth every penny.
Description of Work: Project: Replace the cedar siding and framework on my 30 year-old sunroom with new Hardie vertical planks and trim. Then paint the exterior siding and deck. The original siding was weathered, cracked, dry-rotted, and had weeds growing in the cracks. Once the old siding had been removed, we discovered significant water damage to the sheathing, studs, and insulation. Colonial Remodeling had a large enough crew to immediately repair and replace with extra materials. Then the new sheathing was wrapped with an Hardie Wrap. Next they applied a green insulation and primed Hardie planks and battens. Skilled carpenters did an excellent job or recreating framing around the doors and windows to match the original. The board and batten style siding was painted in two tones, and the deck was stained in a complementary tone. At the completion of the job, the site and garage were cleaned up perfectly and given a final inspection by the project manager. I was so pleased with the results.

The work was done professionally and well. Colonial had to do a lot of extra work because of a bad insulation job that was done by a previous contractor. They worked very hard to deliver solutions to the issues that arose, and we are extremely pleased with the final product.
Description of Work: We replaced the aluminum siding on our home with hardie plank. Because the underlying sheathing was foam board, we also had Colonial resheath the house with plywood. This was important to do before adding the siding so that there would be a good foundation for mounting the siding.

Colonial was one of several firms that came to our neighborhood after a severe hail storm that damaged roofs and siding. Main difficulty was agreeing with insurance company what was the extent of damage. Colonial assisted along the way and worked with Erie to an eventual amicable solution. Roof and siding both were replaced and done capably. Work crews were extremely polite and respectful. Had a new storm door and shutters added so that our house almost looks like new.

The workmanship was excellent, and the end result was everything we had envisioned. During construction there were a few hitches involving unforeseen additional construction that the project manager, Michael Shannon, fairly resolved. In fact, Michael and the whole crew were attentive to concerns and easy to work with. The project took longer than expected, but overall, Colonial Remodeling proved to be a good choice for this work.

I think I have already describe in the last question, however I think it went very well. Micheal was upfront from the beginning and when we had a few questions/concerns each were dealt with to our satisfaction. I recommend you pay attention and when you have a question ask, they are professional and we would use them again, If any doubt, ask to drive by Ron and Brian's home in Alexandria. If were on the porch, feel free to say hello. Bring a bottle of wine with you...
Description of Work: We had them add a front porch 10X30. We were very pleased from the first meeting, they listen to our desires and came back with an excellent design and proposal. The design, materials, and workman ship are top notch. Their idea to add a mahogany ceiling has gained us multiple complements. They resided our entire house, new roof, new gutters and all new no-rot trim on all windows.

With Colonial...terrible. I spent more time trying to get them to follow up only to get repeated apologies for this or that. After months of getting nowhere, I chose Marshall roof and I am so thankful I was pushed into this by Colonials lack of responsiveness. I was extremely pleased with Marshall's quality of product and workmanship and especially their follow up and professionalism.
Description of Work: Our goal was to have Colonial replace our roof, siding and gutters. We worked with them for months trying to get the ball rolling on an insurance claim. They repeatedly dropped the ball on following through for us, I decided to check out another company so I went onto Angies List and simply picked the top rated company, Marshall Roofing. They came out, offered a superior product, much more professional attitude and took complete control of everything. What a difference. Instead of 6 months of getting nothing actually done with Colonial, we had all of our work finished and completed in 4 weeks.

Sales person was great but scheduler and job foreman were not very responsive. Start dates were constantly postponed for dubious reasons. If we had not been on site, the crew would have eliminated a critical waterproofing step. Our yard had a lot of debris and nails upon completion, along with trampled landscaping plants. In regards to the Strup project, there were multiple phases in the project that were held up due to payment structure delays that are unavoidable with most insurance claims. Often, the insurance company and the mortgagor of the property set up progress inspections throughout the project and will only release a certain amount based on completion percentage of the project. Colonial Remodeling does acknowledge there were delays in the project, but we worked as fast as we could, dealing with essentially two 3rd parties that both controlled the payment distributions for the project. We are constantly striving to figure out new ways to make the process more efficient but we cannot be held responsible for delays caused by 3rd parties.

I found Colonial to be more expensive than other qualified contractors who do the same work with the same materials. They were extremely difficult to contact when I asked to speak with the sales representatives manager. They did not respond to letters, e-mail, or voice mail. Eventually, I had my roofing and siding work done by another bidder who was easier to contact and would answer questions and return phone calls. I was not impressed with Colonial's unresponsive management tea.

I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone! And I surely won't be hiring them to do my projects - which I would conservatively estimate at $50,000+.
Description of Work: Called Colonial on a Saturday was told they would call me back today. Four hours later I called back because Colonial was unresponsive. Again, I was told I would get a call back, but they never did call me. It was readily apparent that I was forwarded to an answering service because neither of the "receptionist" could give me a straight answer to any of my questions. I don't like wasting my time talking to an answering service for exactly that reason, I would rather call back during normal business hours, yet when I specifically questioned them if they were an answering service or if they were an employee, the response I back was "I'm on site." What a crock and and evasive answer! In any case, I would say that if you can't get decent customer service as a prospective customer you will never get it after signing a contract and they have your money. Update 9/11/12: I'm augmenting my report of 8 September 2011 to respond to Colonial's response of 11 September 2011. The system doesn't allow me to append this to my earlier report. First of all instead of being referred to as “the caller,” let me establish my bona-fides. I’m a retired Naval Officer and Aviator, current DoD Acquisition Professional and Systems Engineer for complex systems of systems. I know a little bit about managing professionals, acquisition and contracting. I called your phone number listed on Angies’ webpage and spoke to Tony at approximately 10:00AM and another lady at 2:12PM (I cannot remember her name) on Saturday, 8 September 2011. As I mentioned earlier, they both told me they worked for Colonial and were “on-site” (in Maryland specifically); and they both told me Colonial’s was open on Saturday, your business hours were 10AM-5PM and a scheduler was available in Fairfax and will contact me “shortly.” The statement that I was contacted within “90 minutes of his initial contact” is inaccurate. The phone number from which your Office Manager called me is 703-815-2261, and she called me at 6:02PM – that is 230 minutes after the second call I made to Colonial and approximately 480 minutes after my initial contact. Would you like to see the phone records from my cell phone or bill? Your statement that “the member was under the impression that our office was open to schedule an appointment within an hour's notice on a Saturday” is a flat-out lie! I did speak to your Office Manager and explicitly explain to her my conversation with the “answering service.” She apologized to me that the answering service misrepresented themselves as Colonial employees and offered to schedule an estimate in the future, which I refused. I had no expectation nor did I express any desire or intention to schedule an estimate for the “same day on Saturday” or “within an hour’s notice on Saturday.” I do have my own schedule to manage, and I’m not going to waste my time-off on Saturday waiting for the “cable-guy.” When I called Colonial, along with other window/siding/gutter contractors on Saturday, I was arranging estimates for the upcoming weeks as any reasonable and responsible person would do. As I explained to your “Office Manager,” I hold Colonial accountable for the actions of their representatives – whether an answering service or on Colonial’s payroll - and for wasting my time. Furthermore, I have no intention in pursuing any type business relationship or contractual obligation with a company that lacks an ethical compass as your response clearly demonstrates. Maybe Colonial should assimilate the “lesson learned” from this situation about accountability and responsibility; instead of making excuses, take ownership of the problem and fix it. If your answering service misrepresenting your company then fire them and buy an answering machine.

The member contacted our office on a Saturday afternoon and spoke to our on-site answering service, which politely explained that our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, but that they would be happy to schedule an appointment for a free estimate for the caller. It was also explained to the member that someone would call him back, which did occur within 90 minutes of his initial contact. We were very responsive and had our Office Manager follow up with him personally after he spoke to our answering service. We are still willing to set up a free estimate for this caller, but he did not want to schedule anything that was not same-day on a Saturday. Again, we would like to emphasize that our business operations hours are Monday through Friday, with Saturday appointments available if initiated within a reasonable window of scheduling. We are not clear as to why the member was under the impression that our office was open to schedule an appointment within an hour's notice on a Saturday after he connected with our answering service. Colonial Remodeling is a customer-service oriented company that tried to accomodate the member's project needs by offering to schedule an appointment and responding to his questions and concerns with professionalism and prompt attention to his phone inquiry. We continue to adhere to this high level of customer service and work ethic and eagerly await the caller's criteria in regards to a convenient time to provide a free estimate to him.

It was excellent. They were professional and punctual. They answered all of my questions and they cleaned up after themselves. If they did other projects I would hire them for anything.

In the beginning we were overwhelmed by the amount of options we were presented. In the end, Kevin Butler, was able to narrow down and recommend a window line (Simonton Windows, premium line, and we love them!). The cool thing was they were not product independent but we felt comfortable going with his recommendations and after reviewing Simonton windows. The vinyl siding portion was also full of many color and profile selections. Kevin was quick in providing samples and we moved quickly in deciding as we had a deadline to meet. Once the contract was signed, we were in construction in 2 weeks and done in 5 days. We really like the new exterior products we choose as the old material was wearing down and the color was never our favorite. If you're looking for a contractor with experience and timeliness, I would highly recommend Colonial Remodeling.
Description of Work: Colonial Remodeling installed a new vinyl siding system, along with custom trim work, and all brand new windows.

Colonial Remodeling did a satisfactory job. They finished the work when they said they would and they cleaned up very well after the work. I would use them again in the future.
