Colonial Remodeling knocked on my door after the hail storm this year, and offered a free estimate for siding replacement. Their service was great, incredibly friendly, they even signed for some packages for UPS while i was out! I highly recommend these skilled remodelers if you've ever experienced the misfortune of storm damage or seek to add a new aesthetic pleasure to your house.

Very professional organization. They were timely and affordable. Luckily insurance covered most of the costs associated with the repair. They were able to complete the job in just 2 days. I would use them again.

Colonial Remodeling did a fantastic job redoing the siding on my home. After 20 years of weathering, the siding needed replacing. I found Chas at a remodeling show and 3 weeks later I have a house that looks brand new. I can't believe how fast and professional these guys are.

This process was awesome and done in a timely manner. Where to start? Chas, our sales representative, did a great job of informing us of all of the costs. Eugene, the project manager/coordinator, was a great communicator and always checked in on us. Veronica helped us with insurance purposes and was very cordial. The men/workers who executed the renovations were always on time and were extremely cordial and respectful of my property. At one point, one of the gentlemen mentioned to another he was going to go to a local convenience store to go to the restroom. Needless to say, I invited them to use our own restroom, but I thought that was a great example of how respectful/cautious they were to my husband and I and our home. The renovations? turned out A FREAKING MAZING. No more leaks, and our fireplace is amazing! I never thought I would have a functional fireplace in my home but Colonial Remodeling did some SERIOUS WORK!

Chaz and the people with Colonial Remodeling did a fantastic job replacing the siding on my house. My home looks brand new! I can't believe they did such a great job in so little time. The project from initial estimate until completion was less than 2 weeks! Best of all insurance covered almost everything. You can definitely count on these guys to get the job done fast and right,

Such an extensive job almost certainly would be predicted to be painful and frustrating. While there were frustrating moments, this job was overwhelmingly positive due to the people involved---from the project manager to the crews---the quality of Hardy products, and the company's fluency with it. Frankly, we did not have any hard deadlines to have the job done, and that helped. When the window supplier screwed up delivering one of the windows to Colonial, it didn't affect the siding (being installed in the lower floor brick) and it didn't bother us. That was the only real snag with supplies and timelines and was out of Colonial's control. Project manager Michael Shannon (whom we originally met through the DC Home Show) met with us several times before the job began and was clearly fluent not only in building construction and design, but with the products, what would meet our goals and budget, and how to proceed. He kept in touch and knew what the crews were doing; when he said they would be there, they were there, and always on time! The guys on the crews (window and siding) were pleasant, professional and helpful. Naturally a few things came up as they removed everything; there were a few necessary things and a few unnecessary but good-to-have things. Michael was always clear about costs and consequences. As with any big job, we were at the top of the list while things were moving, during the first 95% of the job. Toward the end of course, when little things needed to be done, it dragged on a little, but honestly, everything else was so excellent, it didn't bother us (okay, it bothered my husband more than it did me). We are exceedingly pleased with the job. The two Bs for Price and Responsiveness were because it's always nice to have things cost less than they do =), and because communication did lag toward the end as I mentioned. We would recommend Colonial without hesitation, emphasizing that, as with any such large job involving what is probably your greatest asset, communication and realistic expectations are key.
Description of Work: Replaced all windows (15 JeldWen) and interior/exterior trim, replaced front door and exterior door to garage, replaced original aluminum siding/trim with Hardie siding/trip, built out eaves/gables along 3 sides and along back of house, repaired limited water damage/rot along old (removed) deck join, replaced ledger board, replaced 4 exterior light fixtures.

Jon, the owner of the company was very responsive and informative throughout the process. The work started a bit late but Marvin and his team moved swiftly to get the job done. Had to keep a close eye on work as it was getting done. Like all contractors -they will try to get away with mistakes that go unnoticed. However, once things were pointed out they didn't hesitate to correct them. Overall we are so happy with new siding! It's beautiful!

I am very pleased with both the service and product received from Colonial Remodeling. My roof received hail damage in March of 2014 and needed to be replaced. I interacted with several contractors before selecting Colonial Remodeling . I chose Colonial because of the roofing shingle they offer (Certainteed - a Consumer Reports Best Buy), their installer qualifications and their warranties. Mike Mowery was my sales rep, and unlike experiences I've had with other companies, he did not abandon me once he had my name on the dotted line (i.e. my money). Mike was with me from the beginning to the end of my project keeping me up to date on the status with the insurance company, and promptly addressing any questions or concerns I had. Believe me, I had a lot of question, especially before signing on the dotted line. When the day for installation arrived, I was once again impressed. The roofers worked very hard, were professional and efficient. They even took care of a special request in regards to a water runoff problem I had with my roof. My husband mowed the lawn the day after the job was completed. He did not find a single piece of roofing debris in the yard. After the roofers had left and the dumpster was removed, we did find a handful of nails where the dumpster had been. I definitely recommend Colonial Remodeling, Mike Mowery and my roofingcrew!

Tried to arrange appointments with Colonial remodeling 3 times. Each time, they responded they informed me they would set up an appointment, but it never happened. Finally, they offered a phone interview instead and I told them I would rather have a formal meeting due to the extent of the work. Again an appointment did not get established. The person I dealt with was very pleasant but I was very disappointed in their responsiveness.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
The member contacted us with strict criteria on when he could meet with our Project Manager. We sent several email responses to him, stating that we would try our best to accomodate the member's request to meet outside of our normal business operating hours. We offered two appointment times as well a courtesy phone consultation/email proposal, which were all declined by the member, as he would only meet with us early in the mornings before he left for work. Our receptionist did convey to the member that we wish him the best of luck with his project and to please feel free to contact us in the future, should the member's busy schedule permit that. Sincerely, Colonial Remodeling, LLC

The company responded to my review with a blatant lie. I work from home & I have a farm so I am always home. The day we were expecting them we had the door open and were working in the front room. There is no way they showed up. I also have a great watch dog who alerts me to any activity on the property. I never called them to apologize. I tried to reschedule a 2nd date when they lied to me about canceling the 1st date with an accident. They tried to tell me in a private email that I had several contractors that day and had them confused with someone else. First they were my only appt that day. Second I only booked 3 appts for siding and the other 2 companies showed up on different days. Third I manage an account that nets over $1B annually and I constantly create and manage multiple schedules. I use software and had Colonail booked in my Outlook calendar. I would have left this alone had they not contacted me personally to tell me I couldn't believe my lying eyes so to speak. Read the other reviews. They seem to do good work if you can get them to give you an estimate. My complaint is with their office staff. The same person that I spoke to for scheduling tried to convince me I was wrong and asked me to take down the review. She should have left it alone. I met you originally at the home show in Chantilly in 2013. I have your booklet from that show and took notes in the booklet. I was told your representative that I met at the home show Kevin was no longer with your company. I booked another siding contractor for a job worth $30k. Sorry Colonial. This was their response: "This member has us confused with another company, as she did not answer the door when we went out to meet with her on August 2nd, 2014, as she specifically requested. When she realized she was a no-show, she left our company representative a voice mail explaining that she apologized for missing the appointment she scheduled with us. We have no record of any additional appointments or a car accident, so this is clearly not our company she is speaking of. She had evidently scheduled multiple appointments for the same day, so she needs to address the company at fault, not us. Sincerely, Colonial Remodeling LLC

First, I'll side on the part of the contractor and state that I'm not entirely sure that they were required to do this job. When the job was finished I didn't notice the tabs and certainly didn't hear them, so I'm not entirely sure what changed exactly but this is now almost a year later and now I hear the tabs flapping when the wind is strong outside. I get in touch with Colonial and start an email correspondence with Eugene, who was tracking my job when it was active, and he promised me he'd get back to me after working out what the particulars with the OEM of the shingles used. I don't know for sure what came of the OEM discussion, I do know that Eugene had someone come out to remove the tabs in question (these were on the shingles on the roof and garage, something I'd have done myself were it readily accessible and didn't provide an easy opportunity for me to kill myself.) Bottom line, Eugene knew I was unhappy, he didn't give me a hard time, and not long after bringing the issue/problem to his attention he took care of it totally to my satisfaction a YEAR after the job was finished and at no cost to me. If that doesn't speak to Colonial's professional and quality of work I don't know what does.

They advertised siding. That was the type of work I was looking for. He told me he'd get me in within 3-4 days. It had been long after that until I called back and the woman I spoke to said she would get a hold of them right away and call me back. Now its been over two weeks and I haven't heard back from them. I don't do business with people who start the process that way. I don't really care to hear from them anymore. I don't have confidence in contractors that initially don't do what they say they're going to do.

As anyone can imagine, being with out a kitchen is no fun but Colonial was in and out as quickly as possible. The workers were very friendly and knowledgable about what they were doing. Although getting an addition can be quite stressful, if I had to do it over I wouldn't have chosen another construction company. They were always willing to provide me with updates and customer service was first rate. Overall, I was very pleased with the service and results.

We've had extremely poor experiences with doing remodeling in the past. However, our experience with Colonial Remodeling was completely different! They arrived on time everyday and worked at a fast pace. When I would come home I would be completely shocked at how much had been done in just one day. Not only were they quick, but the quality was great. They paid attention to each and every detail to make sure everything met my highest expectations. I love the new addition and if I decide to do work in the future, I will definitely use them again.

I had a really good experience with Colonial Remodeling - one of my neighbors had recently had a bad experience with another contractor and Colonial Remodeling came highly recommended, so I decided to work with them. Right off the bat I was impressed by the customer service - they were quick to get back to me with all of the facts and the actual project went along quickly and smoothly. I found that everyone I dealt with was polite and professional, I got good and reasonable feedback on what was happening and why they were doing it. After the fact, I had a question about another unrelated aspect of my home (wood rot under my front porch) and they came out the very next day, which I thought was a class act. I'm really happy with the new addition and I've recommended Colonial to friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: I had a recent addition put in over the garage - I also had siding replaced around the garage, as it had sustained minor weather damage over the past few years. This involved extending the roof from the main house over the the addition.

The promised three-month project took more than six months. While most of the framing and large construction seems to have been done well, the entire project was marked by poor project management, poor communication, and substandard interior finishing work. The problems were too numerous to list here, but the worst examples included: - Colonial ignored repeated written and verbal requests to discuss construction of a stone fireplace facade and installed something we did not want. In addition, the work was done poorly. The stones do not fit together well and excessive grout was used to fill in the gaps. On one edge the wallboard shows through in several places--the contractor attempted to cover it by smearing on additional grout, and in several spots you can see fingerprints. They installed a mantle so narrow it is almost unusable, and they installed it upside down. We asked another mason for an estimate to redo the work, and he believes the stonework may already be starting to separate from the wall because it was done incorrectly. It will probably have to be replaced within two to five years. - The dining room ceiling is not even. Despite repeated attempts by Colonial to fix it, none of the can lights sit flush against the ceiling, the ceiling/wall joints are not straight, and paint is bubbling in at least one area. - The new garage stairs did not meet code and had to be rebuilt. The rebuilt stairs also do not meet code--the open space between the stairs is too large. - Two door locks were installed so poorly they did not work. The mortises were cut in the wrong place and the dead bolts would not lock properly. In fact, one of the mortises was cut so poorly the dead bolt will not lock at all. - They broke our garage door opener during construction and refused to pay for the repair. - They failed to complete several punch list items, including repairing the garage floor where they tore out the old steps, removing construction debris from our yard, and properly cleaning our carpets and other areas of the house. - Colonial's employees repeatedly used our tools without asking permission. Their painters destroyed all of our brooms to use the handles as roller extensions, they used our ladders and several floor lamps?also without asking permission?and they left paint drippings on the ladders, lamps, furniture, floors, and previously existing brickwork. - After breaking through the back wall of our house, they left without closing off the house. Our house and everything it contained was completely unprotected. They corrected this problem only after we called the project manager and demanded that something be done to secure the house. - The job site was always a total mess. When the installers arrived with the granite for the kitchen they had to spend several minutes clearing a path through the debris so they could bring the granite in safely. By all appearances, Colonial made little or no effort to protect our furnishings and possessions. Prior to Hurricane Sandy, they did not clean the job site. We had to spend more than an hour, with the help of a neighbor, cleaning up and stowing construction debris and equipment, and we also had to secure two doors that had been installed without locks. - When we chose not to use one of their recommended cabinet companies, the project manager would not help us order the cabinets, and we had to handle all arrangements with the cabinet company on our own. This delayed the project. After we used the cabinetmaker?s preferred installers, Colonial refused to protect the new cabinets. Their crews repeatedly dinged, dented, and scratched the cabinets. We finally had to buy and put up cardboard ourselves to protect the cabinets. By that point, the contractor had done so much damage the cabinetmaker had to send out a finishing expert to make repairs. There was so much damage this expert had to return a second time to complete the repairs. - We had a similar problem with the windows. When we chose to order from someone other than the project manager?s preferred supplier, he did not help with ordering or arranging delivery. Colonial has blamed us for delaying the project, but if their project manager had ordered or helped to order the windows and cabinets any resulting delays would have been minimized. - They failed to install mudroom cabinets, one of our primary requests from the start of the project. From June through October 2012, their project manager made repeated excuses as to why they couldn?t do this work. In late October we finally brought in two other contractors to give us estimates for the mudroom, and then the project manager asked why we weren?t having Colonial build the cabinets. This is an excellent example of how they handled communications throughout the project. We will now build the mudroom cabinets ourselves. - We were particularly unhappy with the performance of one Colonial employee and repeatedly asked that he be removed from our project. We were told they had no one else to do the work, and we saw that employee work on our house at least three times after we had directly requested that he do no more work. We documented these problems in our punch list and withheld final payment pending satisfactory completion of all work. Between January and April 2013, they fixed some of the problems, attempted but failed to fix others, and ultimately never completed the punch list, leaving 15 items undone. Between May and October 2013 the only work performed was replacement of two mismatched windows. These replacements were handled by an insurance company retained by Colonial. Once the windows had been replaced Colonial requested final payment in mid-December 2013. After communicating by email, we responded in writing in mid-January 2014 and retained more than $8,000 to cover work which had already been redone or will have to be redone. We provided documentation (bills, receipts, payment checks, and written estimates) for all of these expenses, explained why we were retaining the funds, and said that we no longer trusted Colonial to complete the remaining work. With the exception of one item, worth $105, we had previously identified all of these problems, and most of them were on the punch list. We made the partial payment on January 13th, and Colonial immediately cashed the check. Rather than address any of the remaining problems they referred us to a collection agency to collect the retained money. In order to avoid damage to our credit rating, we have paid the total bill.
Description of Work: This company put an addition on our house between May and December 2012.This included bumping out the back wall to add a new kitchen and family room, remodeling three rooms, converting a half bath to a full bath, and adding a new half bath.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
Although we are very disappointed that the Member states in their Angie’s List posting that they were dissatisfied with many of the final stage aspects of the substantial remodeling and rear one story addition project that we contracted and delivered to them, we stand by and are proud of the results we provided to them for their project. The project work that we did for the Member delivered an expertly built and well finished new kitchen and family room addition to their home as well as other extensively remodeled areas in the existing house which were equally well built and finished. Unfortunately (and thankfully quite rarely) we find ourselves engaged in a project with a client that demonstrates an inability to be satisfied with best efforts workmanship and project management. For this project that was sadly the case in our experience with this Member. As the Member stated in their review, the work was “well done” by their own account, but they list several problems that they had with us during the construction and finishing process. The fact is that every remodeling project will have its highs and lows (procedurally and emotionally) as it runs from beginning to completion and we make a point to let all of our clients know this from the very start of the work we will be doing for them. By its very nature, remodeling is a relatively expensive, noisy, and intrusive business that needs to be well scheduled and managed to be successful. Almost without fail, large remodeling projects will run into some surprises and/or unexpected circumstances, but we always do our best resolve these situations in the least costly (to budget and schedule) manner possible for our clients. Also, many projects will grow from their contracted scope into a more expansive project when clients decide to add new tasks and/or change their minds about the planned tasks well after the project has started. For the Member and their project this was the case and unfortunately they were not willing to allow us to manage them thru these circumstances. They changed their minds about many of the tasks and materials specified in the Agreement for the project and made many ill-advised decisions that affected the schedule and manageability of the project. The fact is, despite all the change orders required to accommodate the clients redirections, we still completed the project on a schedule that was very close to the 180 days (6 months) that we had estimated in the project Agreement (contrary to the 3 months that their posting claims that we had “promised” them). There was a punch list of items at the project’s end that we worked diligently with the Member to resolve (many of which were items that were due to existing conditions in the house that, though they were not of our doing, we tried to improve as a courtesy to our client). Unfortunately, many of the Member’s expectations were not reasonable and it appears their emotions have gotten the better of them since the AL report they filed is not really an accurate representation of the Project’s history and/or results. The bottom-line is that the Member got a great result for their remodeling/addition project despite their complaints about certain aspects of the job that we did for them. We would encourage all interested AL members to read the many, many other positive reports that our clients have posted about the excellent and professional work that we have done for them. Based on those reports we think it is very clear what sort of general contracting remodeler that Colonial Remodeling really is and that an AL member can expect from us that same sort of great experience and results for their remodeling project, too!

The company's pricing was competitive, but we elected to use another company as the scope of our project changed substantially.

After insurance we paid about $5000 which included our deductible, and upgraded siding (not fully covered) and attic insulation. Colonial did all the paperwork & made it easy for us. A couple of times, there were no English speakers on the crew which made things a bit difficult when there were minor issues (like the crew not cleaning up as well as they should have). Overall they were very good and I would recommend them.
Description of Work: New roof, new cement fiber siding, attic insulation - we had hail damage.
