The experience was much better than I expected. My sales rep, Charles Kulbok, was helpful throughout the whole process. I needed samples and actual jobsites to look at regarding the styles and colors I wanted. Charles was able to provide this information very quickly which helped speed up the process. The construction process was good as well. The Project Manager, Eugene Schwetz, communicated all the delivery dates and installation dates as promised. There were no major delays and the project was completed on time. The crew was very nice and did a great job cleaning up. I would recommend Colonial Remodeling to any and all of my colleagues.
Description of Work: I was in need of new vinyl siding and a new guttering system and Colonial Remodeling provided me with numerous samples and references.

A company calling themselves Colonial Remodeling showed up at my house when I was not home and spoke to my daughter. She told them the owners were not home and to come back later. Jay Oakley IV came back and proceeded to climb on the roof without permission. My husband and I drove up to find a stranger on our roof! When I asked what he was doing he said my husband arranged an inspection via email. At that moment my husband walked up and denied any such thing ( I handle ALL of the home repairs etc, so he never would have done this) We asked the man to leave he said he had evidence that we needed a new roof due to hail damage. We asked him to leave again. Shortly after he left Ian Exyk showed up at our door, insisting he knew our neighbors while giving me names that don't belong to any of our neighbors. I asked him to leave, he insisted we needed a new roof and that our insurance company would pay for it. I asked him to leave again, he was very agressive and kept trying to show me something on his phone. I asked him to leave again! He was agitated that I would not listen to him he said his inspector found evidence of damage on our roof. I reminded him he was trespassing and didn't have permission to inspect anything in my absence and that I had no idea what he may have done to my roof. These guys were very unprofessional, they trespassed on my property and then tried to convince me that THEY needed to replace my roof. The liability of having someone on my property, much less climbing up on my roof without me being home was a reall issue for me.
Description of Work: The only service performed was that they trespassed not only on my property, but climbed onto my roof when I was not at home.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
First, we would like to emphasize that we did not conduct any work or business transactions with this individual, thus making the "completed work date" of July 7, 2012 irrelevant and untrue. Unfortunately our roof inspector had the wrong address and did make every effort to to apologize to this individual several times. Additionally, a representative from Colonial Remodeling apologized to the "member" in-person, which may have added unnecessary confusion to the situation. This was an honest mistake and Colonial Remodeling respects everyone's privacy and would never intentionally trespass or bother anyone. This was a genuine misunderstanding that has never occurred in our 15 years of serving families with their remodeling and restoration needs.

They contacted me , after a hail storm...they screwed around so long trying to soak my insurance company for more money and they finally withdrew from the project..but, it was so late in the season I couldn't get my roof replaced until spring. Getting my deposit back was not easy, but they eventually did return it. Phone calls would go unanswered.
Description of Work: This company solicited work after a hail and windstorm in this area. The salesman was very good and worked with my insurance adjuster to get "me" the most money to replace my roof, gutters, and siding. After being told that my estimate from the insurance company would cover all those things and the checked arrived I then spent the next 5 months waiting while they tried to get more money from my insurance company for "me". The salesman even came out to my house, without my permission or knowledge, and removed a 6 sq ft section of siding from my house. By October it became apparent to Colonial Remodeling that they were not going to get any more money from my insurance company for the repairs and they returned my $1,000.00 deposit after many phone calls and tore up the contract. In the meantime I was left with a 6 sq ft area of my house that was exposed where the siding was removed. I called them and they promised to send someone out to fix it...that never happened. The gentleman I was now dealing with informed me that this was something my insurance company requested and therefore they were not responsible. I think to get me off their back they offered to pay up to $250.00 to have my house repaired. I never took them up on that, so far, because I am sure it will be a hassle to collect. As for the price of the job, it seems that what they were looking for was as much money as my insurance company would pay, so were their products worth the price, I don't know. For all I know they were trying to make a huge profit off my insurance company. They are storm chasers. Oh, and did I tell you that when they decided they weren't going to get any more money for "me" and pulled out it was too late in the season to have my roof replaced.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
Colonial Remodeling responded to the customer's inquiry in her concern that her house may have received substantial hail damage. Colonial Remodeling agreed to send a representative to her property and begin communications with her insurance company in pursuing the claim. We did find some damage on the siding and the insurance company requested we send an ITEL report (sample cut piece) and we did just as they requested. In the end, the replacement was not done, but the customer was refunded her $1,000.00 deposit back. We want to emphasize that we did not charge the customer for any services, and only did what the insurance company asked us to do.*

Our experience was awesome! The crew arrived before 7:30am and got right to work setting up their equipment and getting the old siding off the house. The crew did not take a break until lunch, at about 1:30pm, then continued working until about 6pm. By that time, the only part of the house that did not have new siding was the front, and the crew had already started on that. When they returned at 7:30am the next morning, they got right back to work, and finished the whole house before lunchtime. They cleaned up everything (including nails in the yard!), and were gone by 12:30pm the second day.
Description of Work: We hired Colonial to replace our siding. They arrived on the scheduled day, removed and discarded the old siding, installed foam board on top of the original water barrier, repaired a large hole in the wall of our attic, installed new siding to include J-channels (a great finished look!), outlet and plumbing covers, and new light-fixture covers. They also kindly installed the new light fixtures themseves.

Work was fully complete within in 2.5 weeks from initial contact. We are 120% satisfied and have been recommending Colonial Remodeling and Michael to all of our friends.

Due to a hail storm, I thought my siding needed replacement. Colonial approached me in a friendly manner and explained that I had damage to both my siding and gutters. I worked closely with Min Chae, who was awesome in handling all matters related to my getting new siding & gutters. The end product was just beautiful and Min communicated with me through the entire process. Colonial was also help in dealing with my insurance company and bank to get the necessary funds approved to do the work. I would recommend Colonial to my friends and use them again myself.
Description of Work: Colonial replaced my entire house with siding and I received new gutters. The siding color was a special order and is just so beautiful. Glad Colonial offered the color I wanted.

We had a very pleasant experience with Colonial Remodeling. Their sales rep Kevin did a great job of explaining everything and told us what to expect. Both the roofing crew and siding crew knocked before doing any work and made sure we were ready to allow them to work. We provided coffee and drinks for the crews ( This goes a long way towards good work ). The workers were very polite and worked quickly and neatly. They always made sure to clean up after themselves and even took their shoes off whenever they had to come in to use our restroom. The only hiccup was a minor scheduling mistake with some minor work towards the end of the project but it was quickly resolved and there wasn't much of a delay. There was also a small delay in hauling away some extra materials but nothing major. Overall, our house looks brand new. My husband and I were very nervous about having so much work done. Colonial did a great job of juggling everything and the crews never got mixed together which kept the project going smoothly and efficiently. Colonial was also great about doing some last minute things for us such as adding the outdoor outlet and storm door. They even did the painting of the metal roof and front door at no extra cost as long as we supplied them with the paint.
Description of Work: We live in a end unit townhome and had our roof, siding, gutters, window shutters replaced. We also added an outdoor electric outlet to our front elevation and added foamboard insulation under the new siding. We also had a new power attic fan added when the roof got done and replaced our old front storm door. Finally, we had our front metal roof and front entry door painted a new color.

The project went extremely well. Michael Shannon was our Project Manager and provided us excellent guidance and gave us some great ideas. When the estimate was originally a little higher than what I wanted to spend Michael offered ideas for us to lower the cost. We were so happy with the outcome that they are getting ready to start another project which involves re-do of the front porch, sidewalk, and retaining wall.

I obtained estimates from 5 sources, 3 of which were certified Hardie installers. Michael Shannon was the project manager assigned to us. I had a slew of questions, since this was my first experience with siding replacement. Mr. Shannon was very forthright with his responses, and I believe he knew the answer to every question I posed. That experience gave me confidence that the company hired good people. He was very responsive and clear in his proposal. This experience contrasted with the representatives from the other companies; one seemed to know less than I knew, and another offered an approach that common sense told me would not work. The crew knew how to do the work. They did not seem to need any supervision. The job was very well-done, and numerous neighbors have commented on how good it looks. The sun shines on the siding and you can see it is 100% straight, in all 3 dimensions. The onsite supervisor was at my beck-and-call, and took care of my small concerns immediately. The gutter installation was flawless and very neat. We had zero problems after that. The painting was very neat and uniform. They came on a Sunday. Everyone liked it. We had a minor problem where some marks were on the siding, and Mr. Shannon sent a crew the next day. They made it look perfect. Hardie Panel is not cheap, so we had to pay the price, but we are hopeful it will last long after we are gone. Colonial's pricing was competitive.
Description of Work: Colonial replaced our original T-111 siding with Hardie Panel; installed new gutters and downspouts; and painted the entire exterior.

The folks at Colonial Remodeling treated us great from start to finish! Our salesman listened to what we wanted to do to our screened in porch area and showed us some siding and tirm in the back of our house that really needed fixing and then provided us with a proposal that meet our objectives and budget. Their workers were great! The tile work came out just like we wanted and the remodeled interior and new screen work was lovely. The new siding repair and exterior trim replacement work they did in the bacl of our house really improved the appearance of our home in back. Finally, they cleaned up after themselves and everybody had a super attitude. All in all, it was a very pleasant experience! We will use them again when we decide we are ready to redo the rest of our roofing and the siding and trim on the rest of our house (that will likely be soon!).
Description of Work: We had Colonial Remodeling remodel our screened-in porch (new tile floor, screens, and interior finishes) and replace its leaky roof. They also did replaced damaged siding and trim work in the back of our house.

Honestly, it went very well. Yes, it took longer than we thought. We had issues with the city of Alexandria on the permit process, but once we got through that, it moved along. I and my partner are very handy, and I am perfectionist! However, they truly have skilled craftsman working on their team. Our biggest fear would be a contractor showing up here with day labors from the Home Depot..not worries. A Brazilian team did the framing and this young forman was a perfectionist too. In fact, I saw him yell at the roofers for messing up some work he just completed. Louis, was the finish carpenter and painter. Okay, he is slow, but so meticulous we loved him. Every corner is perfect!, Like I said, I am a perfectionist, but so is Louis. We had a changes pop up during the project. I was not happy with the trim selected for the porch ceiling. I called Mike, who came out and agreed we needed to change it..no charge. We made a few changes during project, but I did not feel we were over charged for the changes. In fact , I think we ended up within one thousand of the orginal estimate. I had some concerns on the contract about lanscape damage as we have 45 year old azalezas, but they did a great job protecting them. The attention to detail was the most impressive. Mike can be hard to contact at times, as I read in a few reports. But, honestly...he never let us down. We gave him full access to our house, as well as Louis. We have very attentive neighbors, and they all reported seeing Mike out here almost everyday checking on the project. Sally if, you are reading this, thank you! Louis even let the dogs out during the day. We felt , if the dogs loved these guys, then they must be good people. The best part and the hardest part about remodling is selecting a contractor who knows what they are doing. We were nervous at first, we spent a lot of money. I feel our homework paid off, I am happy to report we would recommend Colonial to anyone based on a truly professional job completed I am sure they would have people drive by our house, if so and we are on the porch, feel free to ask. We are proud to show off our house! Satisfied customers, Ron & Brian
Description of Work: We used Colonial Remodelers to add a front porch (10x33) to our 1964 home in Alexandria, VA. We had Mike Shannon as our sales representative. We were pretty specific, on our requirements. Mike was very direct and was very honest on what they could do and would not do. The reason we selected them over several others, is that he listen to what we covered in our project desires and budget, and was very confident. Christy was our designer who worked with MIke, in one evening and a glass of wine. We had a great discussion and within a week or so, Christy sent her first prints. We discussed the options, but the most amazing was their suggestion to add a Mahogany ceiling to the porch. It turned out absolutely beautiful, everybody comments how beautiful our house looks!! So, what did they do, they added the porch, metal roof on porch, new hardy back sidling on the entire house, new roof, new gutters, built out rakes our our roof to add shadow lines. They painted all the trim and turned our house into of of the most beautiful in our neighborhood.

Mike Shannon was very prompt to contact me when I submitted an inquiry on the James Hardie website for new siding. I was very impressed. We had a great conversation about how Colonial operates and installs this particular brand of siding to very specific manufacturer specifications. In short order, we made an appointment for Mike to stop by and look at the house. He was running late on the day he stopped by so all he could do was review some brochures with my wife and leave them behind for us to review. Later that week, he stopped by to measure the house so he could prepare a proposal. This all took place in early to mid-October 2011. In November, I received an email explaining how busy he was and that siding/trim proposals were very time consuming. He wrote that I should expect a proposal in a couple weeks. In December, Mike called to see if I was still interested in a proposal. I told him that I was, but was somewhat sceptical about Colonial's ability to complete a job in a timely basis if they couldn't even get a proposal to me within two months. I have not heard from him sense and doubt I will. I've been to the 'Colonial website and read the testimonials on Angie's List. They seem to do a wonderful job, but my experience has been quite different. I don't think I would let these guys in my house to unclog a toilet. Alternatively, it could be that my siding job of approximately $30,000 is just too small for them.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
Our approach at Colonial Remodeling is unique in that we evaluate ALL the potential project tasks discussed in our initial client consultation, go through a design process exploring all options considered including thorough research of possible limitations by local building ordinances, and then provide a comprehensive proposal based on the proper sequencing of the entire project. Sometimes the due diligence required for providing a comprehensive solution and plan for a prospective client doesn't meet the client's anticipated timeline for a proposal. While we understand the business model may not work for all of our prospective clients, this is the Colonial Remodeling process which has served the DC Metropolitan area since 1996 with thousands of satisfied customers.

The project ran without a hitch. I could not be happier with my decision to work with Colonial.
Description of Work: I recently had Colonial Remodeling re-side my parents house as a gift for the holidays. It is a large two story home. The entire team was extremely professional and attentive throughout the duration of the project and understood how much this meant to me and my parents. My phone calls were always returned in a timely manner when I had questions or concerns regarding the remodeling process. The project managers were respectful of my budget and general concerns from the inital estimate to the completion of the work. Their house looks brand new! Thank you Colonial Remodeling. I will definitely call them again the next time I have work done on my house!

We were completely pleased with Colonial Remodeling from start to end of our project. Colonial designed and built our screened porch - one of our family's favorite rooms of our home. The project included the installation of tongue and groove flooring, skylights, Chippendale-style railing and the joining of two tricky roof lines. Initially, we experienced leaking of rain water between the two adjoining roof lines. Colonial reworked the section of the roof as necessary - in a professional and diligent manner - and we have been enjoying the results of the company's work for almost 5 years now.

I recently contracted Colonial Remodeling to replace a set of double French Doors that opens on to my patio. I live on a golf course and needed impact resistant doors that could withstand the occasional golf ball hit (which proved to be the demise of my previous doors). I had previousy used Colonial in 2003 to have vinyl clad aluminum installed on my previous home and had been very pleased with the personal service, great price and quality result. So after shopping around to get some quotes I contacted them to discuss my door issue. Colonial not only beat the best quote I had received by several hundred dollars (without me indicating), but it was clear that they understood my problem, what I needed, and offered several high quality door options. I decided to hire them again and am glad I did. Communication was excellent throughout the ordering process, both with Colonial, the door delivery service and the installer/painter. My new doors look almost identical to the doors they replaced, but are higher quality, more energy efficient and best of all are resistant to those pesky golf balls. I will definitely continue to use Colonial Remodeling for my window, door, decks, and siding needs in the future and recommend them without reservation.

If you have the patience of Job and are willing to wait, nag, and have your calls ignored when problems occur, then you will be happy with your experience. A roofing, siding and window replacement job that should have taken weeks dragged on from Aug. 2010 (our first meeting with the sales rep) to June 2011, when the work was finally completed. The problems were all managerial -- from error-prone estimates, to missed deadlines, to mistakes in ordering the materials. Example: After installing an entry way door that opened the wrong way, it took Colonial two months to install a new door. Colonial always blamed the suppliers for mistakes -- as if that mattered to the customer. As one frustrated installer put it, "The work on the exterior is good. On the interior (i.e., project management), it's terrible." I agree. While we are very pleased with the quality of the workmanship, credit goes to the subcontractors that Colonial hires. In fairness, our sales rep, Chas Kulbok, did step in toward the end to resolve the outstanding issues. The president of Colonial Remodeling never did respond to any of my emails or calls. When it comes to collections, however, Colonial excels. They began calling for final payment within hours after the painter put the finishing touches on the job. We have since hired two other companies for the front steps (Cravens Nursery) and kitchen remodeling jobs that Colonial would have gotten had they performed as promised. Kudos to Cravens for going from proposal to completion in less than a week and at half the cost of Colonial.
Description of Work: Colonial Remodeling installed a new roof, siding, windows and front door.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
It is unfortunate to hear the member's perspective on their project experience was so negative, as we take great pride in our company's reputation for providing good customer service. However, we are happy to hear that ultimately the member was very pleased with the overall quality of workmanship. Colonial Remodeling appreciates all feedback both good and bad in order to help constantly improve our business processes. While both parties may not agree on details and circumstances related to the project, it is important to provide Colonial's perspective in response to the member's criticism. The extended timeline of the project was mostly attributed to the fact that there was not one project that lasted 11 months, but instead multiple projects that were bid and contracted on several different dates throughout that extended time period. Initial contact was made by the member in August 2010 for an "assessment" of storm related damages to their roof. The member's insurance company did not provide a final settlement or a deposit check until November 9, 2010, at which point Colonial entered into a contract to replace the member's roof. It wasn't until February 9, 2011, that the member entered into a contract for additional work to include the siding and windows and then selected the actual roof color. Due to the weather restrictions of the winter season, the roof installation was scheduled in March and completed in one day. The additional windows and siding project was then completed afterward in April. As of April, the entire project had been substantially completed in under 6 weeks from time of the final contract with material selections and initial deposit until the time of completion with the exception of the custom front door. We believe both parties' frustration centered around the lead times related to the custom front door that was improperly manufactured and delivered to the member. Contractors do not manufacture doors; manufacturers do and when the door arrived with the improper hardware, there was no other option other than to wait for the 8 week lead time for the manufacturer to correct the mistake. Once the correct door arrived, it was installed and in order to help accommodate the inconveniences of the door delay, Colonial provided an additional new window free of charge to the member. Final payment was requested and eventually received well after 30 days of total completion and not within hours of completing the painting. The member did request bids for additional services outside the main expertise of Colonial Remodeling and decided to hire other contractors for that specialty work. Colonial Remodeling is a specialty service general contractor. However, we cannot be everything to everyone nor do we claim to be. Lastly, Colonial Remodeling does appreciate all feedback provided by the member and takes all criticism to heart. While we acknowledge we do make mistakes, we are constantly looking for ways to make improvements to our business and better service all of our customers.

It went very well. Jon was with us every step of the way and Iliud was a great project manager - both are very caring and empathetic. We worked with a designer that Jon recommended to complete the plans and we were very happy with our experience working with her as well. My husband had a very specific vision, which we had originally started with another architect, and so that made the project easier to realize. The project started in September and ended in January, which was much longer than we all thought. Unfortunately we ran into weather problems with a very rainy and cold fall, which not only caused the project to take longer, but the final step (painting) was then done in December & January on some questionable days with low temps or rain. We also had issues with the electrical contractor and the installation of our electrical hookup to the house (actually that was one of the biggest disappointments). We were consistently impressed with the carpenters and their attention to detail. Iliud made a lot of nice recommendations and seemed to go the extra mile. We ran into a couple of challenges with the project (as one would expect with any project of this magnitude), but Jon and Iliud made suggestions and they wanted us to be happy. The end result is a beautiful porch that we enjoy every day and working with Colonial was a very positive experience.
Description of Work: Our primary project was putting a roof on our front porch where a pergola was constructed, reconstructing the porch walls which were not originally vented and started to rot and then enhancing the front of the house with new dormers, architectural flourishes, re-roofing the house, replacing the siding on the back of the house and replacing some windows and doors. We essentially took our "To Do" list and asked Jon & his team to incorporate some of these small to medium tasks with the big porch project.

We worked closely with Jon the owner to make crucial design and materials decisions. We were impressed with his depth of knowledge and professionalism. The project management team was responsive to our requests and were frequently overseeing the work on site to ensure the work was done properly, the work site was kept in an orderly fashion and work stayed on schedule. They actually finished a little ahead of schedule which we have never experienced with a contractor before. It has been a year and a half since we had the work done and we are still very happy with the results. The siding has given our house an updated and elegant look that stands out in the neighborhood. My wife is thrilled with the style and colors Jon helped us choose, even though we would not have chosen them originally. His experience and eye for detail really was apparent in the planning process. The new doors are such a huge upgrade in functionality as well as efficiency. They seal well and are easy to open and close and look great. As mentioned previously the work was completed ahead of the original schedule and the price was as quoted. We feel Colonial provided excellent value for the price paid. We are planning another project to add a front porch and will use Colonial again. This was a suggestion from Jon during the siding project but we were unable to do it at the time.
Description of Work: We used Colonial Remodeling to install new James Hardie siding and trim and new doors.
