Description of Work: We hired CR to build a front portico at our MD farm house. Michael Shannon, and all of the trades the company employs were professional, knowledgeable, competent, OT/on-budget, and responsive to inquires and modification requests. The bid was inclusive, fair, and the job started and completed in the window of time, as committed. We are currently getting CR bid to replace facia board, and gutters for the same property. This is a reputable company that gets an enthusiastic recommendation.

Description of Work: I asked for an estimate on siding and roofing in early December. I was told it would be a couple of weeks to put it together. They sent another individual out to measure the roof and gather additional information. I was told the estimate would be forthcoming. That was over a month ago. I have hired someone else to do the roof and am looking at someone else for the siding. Guess they didn't need our business.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
Our approach at Colonial Remodeling is unique in that we evaluate ALL the potential project tasks discussed in our initial client consultation, go through a design process exploring all options considered including thorough research of possible limitations by local building ordinances, and then provide a comprehensive proposal based on the proper sequencing of the entire project. Sometimes the due diligence required for providing a comprehensive solution and plan for a prospective client doesn’t meet the client’s anticipated timeline for a proposal. While we understand this business model may not work for all of our prospective clients this is the Colonial Remodeling process which has serviced the DC metropolitan area since 1996 with thousands of satisfied customers.

Colonial Remodeling has been great to work with on every single project we have done with them. From roofing, to windows to siding they were spot on with their recommendations, craftsmanship, professionalism and pricing. We were really looking to use James Hardie for our siding project and to know that they are one of the exclusive service providers in the area and are personally endorsed by the James Hardie company meant a lot. They were very helpful in executing all tax paperwork as well to take advantage of federal credits. Jon Hickox, the proprietor is just the kind of guy you'd want as your friend as well as your contractor. He held our hand through the process, made sure his project management team maintained tight control of the execution and his installation teams were great, courteous and clean. They were also incredibly fast, thereby minimizing any inconveniences to us. I would highly recommend this team, as its not just great to support such a nice group of people, it's even better that they are all local to the bone, with most staff having been born and raised right here in the Northern Virginia area, including Jon.
Description of Work: We have had Colonial work on many projects for us. They did our roof in 2004, our siding in 2005, all of our windows and sliding doors in 2009 and just recently had them do another windows and door project at our new house.

We checked our entire customer reference list, prospect database, and call records and have absolutely no record of the above "Member." Every year we have a booth on display at the Home & Garden show and have discussions with thousands of potential clients considering projects and answering remodeling questions in general so it is certainly possible we conversed with the above "Member" at the show. However posting a comment on Angie's List 6 months after talking with us at a home show rather than just calling us directly is not at all constructive. If the “Member” wished to pursue a project further please contact our office at 703-534-0800 and we would be happy to happy to hear from you.

Overall the remodeling project was smooth and went really well. Colonial Remodeling staff were very prompt and professional throughout the entire process. They took the time to answer all of my questions through every step while ensuring that my requests were met. The tongue & groove knotty pine was removed so I could re-sell almost all of it. When an issue or problem arose their staff took the time to approach me and discuss different options prior to moving forward. For example, in boxing out a support column the staff approached me, provided and discussed different options with me and then moved forward. They added wonderful touches with the crown molding around the interior doors and windows that really make it look great and the work performed around the newly replaced windows add a great new look as well. As stated, overall I'm very happy with the entire project and the process involved in completing the remodel. I will definitely use Colonial Remodeling again for future projects around the house and would recommend them to everybody looking for all types of remodeling projects regardless of size and scope.
Description of Work: Colonial Remodeling was hired to remodel our outdated basement and replace the original, metal framed, single-pane windows that were in the basement. They were to carefully remove the tongue & groove knotty pine paneling so I could re-sell it. The remodel project consisted of dry-locking the foundation walls, moving an interior wall, framing the basement, adding insulation, installing drywall, replacing the windows, replacing some interior doors, adding base trim and crown molding, and painting the remodeled space with 2 different colors (one side being an accent wall). Part of the remodeling project included bringing everything up to current code standards, including the electrical, which Colonial Remodeling handled everything regarding the necessary permit process and required inspections.

My wife and I did a significant amount of work on our house and worked with Colonial Remodeling for everything from interior (windows, flooring, doors, drywall, electrical and lights) to exterior (siding, roofing, composite decking, and pavers). The service and time spent to ensure our satisfaction was tremendous. You can certainly tell when someone cares as much about your house as you do. We were very uncertain about what we were going to do and John with Colonial Remodeling took the time to consult with us through the entire process. I do not think we could have done better. Without question I recommend Colonial Remodeling.

I needed to get new windows for my house. I met with several companies about the work. I ended up with several pushy companies trying to sell me on their various windows. I ended up deciding on colonial because their sales guy was very friendly and easy going and was not pushy. I also had a friend whom had some work done by them and gave them rave reviews. Once we agreed upon the price for the work they sent out their measure guy who was very friendly and seemed to know what he was doing. In a few weeks they called me when the windows were ready and we setup an install date. They showed up on the day they were supposed to, a little bit later than they told me. They told me they would be at my house at 8am and they showed at 10am, I guess this is par for the course with remodeling. They guys showed up and installed the windows in one day which was pretty amazing. I thought it would take longer for the install. They cleaned up and hit the road. The windows are of a good quality and the install seems to be good. I was pleased with the price and install of windows.

I contacted Colonial Remodeling in August of this year to replace the existing windows in the house I recently purchased. All of the windows in my house were original and none of them opened because of years of being painted over. Jon Hickox of Colonial met me at my house to for the initial meeting to discuss window replacement options, followed a few days later by one of his installers Eliud del Cid to take measurements. Eliud carefully measured all of my windows, which are numerous, 23 in all including a huge bay window. Jon worked with me to choose the right replacement windows for my budget and help me design the grid patterns. Even with the huge bay window, Jon was able to stay within my budget and get me energy efficient windows that would meet the standards of the government?s tax credit program. The windows were manufactured within a week and the installation crew showed up bright and early on the morning I confirmed for install (which was based on my schedule, not theirs). Colonial?s installation crew were professional and did a great job installing the windows on my house. As a last minute decision I purchased a new front entry door at Home Depot and Colonial?s crew installed that for me as well, for a nominal increase in labor fees. Finding a trustworthy and experienced contractor is stressful in today?s economy and I would highly recommend Jon Hickox and Colonial Remodeling.

Not so good. I contacted this company on August 18, 2010 regarding a repair/reconstruction estimate to repair/replace a portico that was collapsing on one side do to water rot. I spoke with Michael Shannon, the project manager, and he said they would stop by my place in a day or 2 and then give me an estimate. I had also taken photos, so e-mailed them to him as he said that would be helpful. On August 19th he replied to me via e-mail, "Got it?thanks. I?ll get back to you soon. Michael ." I never heard anything more from Colonial. Today, September 7th, I called their office to see what "soon" meant, and the receptionist was apologetic and said she would have Mike call me back, and that she too would call me back at 4:00 p.m. to make sure Mike had called me back. It is now 5:30 p.m. and I've not heard back from either one. I guess they're too busy and can afford to turn work away, so probably a good idea to not even consider them for your work. Very unprofessional, and they hadn't even given me an estimate yet! Cannot even begin to imagine how unresponsive they would be once they had my money!!

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
Colonial Remodeling was solicited by member to provide a bid for her repair work however Colonial does not typically perform repair work or handyman type projects nor do we ever promise to provide estimates within deadlines for such repairs especially during our traditionally busy remodeling season. That being said C.R. did provide an estimate at the insistence of the customer in a reasonable amount of time and member chose not to perform any work with our firm. Colonial Remodeling was simply not the the right fit for member's repair project but to make an accusation about how Colonial would have handled any funds when no contract was ever entered into and no money has ever been exchanged is completely inappropriate and baseless. Colonial Remodeling has serviced the DC metropolitan area for over a decade with thousands of happy clients, has maintained an "A" rating with the Better Business Bureau, and has an excellent reputation of providing quality service and competitive pricing for many years.

It was a long, bad experience and I would not recommend using this company. The owner, Jon, is very nice and professional. However, he subcontracts the work to others and does not supervise the work in any fashion. It took the crew well over 2 mos., if not longer, to finally finish our project. There were several mess-ups and do-overs along the way. For example, we ordered heavy gutters to be installed. I think they installed a cheaper grade gutter than what we ordered. The gutters fell off the house 3 times since installation in October. When we called to have them re-installed, Jon was slow to get back to us and the re-install was very messy. As a result, we have paint-chipped and bent gutters on our house which we just purchased. There were also many mess-ups in the siding. They did not properly attach the fascia boards to the roof despite the Hardie manufacturers' instructions. After the first snowfall, the fascia boards were hanging from the house and some had fallen off. We raised the issue with Jon and he tried to tell us that the boards were installed correctly. We had to get a copy of the Hardie installation instructions and get a supervisor on the phone to get Colonial to come out and do the job correctly. In addition, they left a large gap between the siding and the roof. So large that bugs and critters can easily get inside our attic space. When we asked about his, we were told that is "normal." Highly doubtful. They also installed a new cellar door to match our new siding. They did not bother to put primer on the door before painting it. Now, within 6 mos, the door is chipped and will have to be re-painted. The crew was also very messy. For months, we have been picking up debris from the yard, i.e. nails, siding material, pieces of metal, etc. We recently tried contacting the company to cut a hole in the siding for a vent . They didn't bother to return our call, even though we spent a significant sum of money with them in the fall. Yet, Colonial has the audicity to use post a quote (taken out of context) from us on their website as a reference. Overall, this was just a very bad experience. Maybe the job was too big. For whatever reason, the job took too long and the quality of work was not good.

Response from Colonial Remodeling LLC
Colonial Remodeling completed this project back in September 2009 (as noted by “The Member”) then in the winter of 2009-2010 an unprecedented series of snow storms hit the DC area and as a result some of the gutters were ripped loose in the ensuing massive ice dam that follows a snow melt down of 2+ feet of snow sitting on a roof. The problem was compounded by the fact that “The Member” has an old metal roof with no ice or snow guards and virtually non-existent attic insulation which leads to a classic ice dam that builds up from daily thaws and nightly re-freezing. The amount of pressure that resulted was literally thousands of pounds of ice sitting directly on a gutter which no gutter in the world could withstand. This pressure is what caused some of the fascia boards and gutters to predictably rip loose. As per the request from “The Member” CR came back and replaced some of the damaged gutters and re-hung other gutters that were ripped loose. Since The Member did not wish to submit an insurance claim they opted instead to pay CR directly for this additional work. CR even took the extra step to reattach the fascia boards with 3 1/4” stainless steel screws fastened directly through the rafter tails for additional strength and durability but at the end of the day this was an ice dam created by a natural disaster that could not have been avoided. The Member is fully aware that issue had nothing to do with a "cheaper grade gutter" and was the direct result of the ice dam. This matter was considered resolved until mentioned again 8 months later. The project did indeed take almost 2 months that is accurate and based upon the size and complexity of the project 8 weeks is considered a reasonable amount of time to perform the scope of work. This was a sizable remodeling project on a very large historic home that dated back to the 1800's with several wings added at later dates. Additionally CR was asked to perform numerous change orders to help out “The Member” including electrical work, relocating fixtures, relocating lights, switches, re-adjusting old existing windows, installing new interior trim, replacing rotted trim and supports, building new custom basement access doors, painting, and a whole series of additional requests “The Member” added to the original contract. Considering the original scope of work, the many challenges of an old historic structure, and the large amount of additional change orders added to the job 8 weeks is a very reasonable amount of time for completion. Whenever any service requests were made by the client CR responded promptly setting up numerous walk through meetings to accommodate The Members schedule including weekends and evenings. Additionally CR set up an inspection meeting with the manufacturer's representative to inspect that the work was completed properly and this was done at the recommendation of CR not The Member. James Hardie performed an inspection of the workmanship and approved the quality of the work. Neither James Hardie or Colonial Remodeling ever made any claim that the project would include any pest prevention or critter control. The structure dates as far back as the 1800's and it would be impossible to ever make such a claim that every component of a completed James Hardie siding and trim package could prevent a bug from crawling into the attic especially due to the drastic differences in 200+ year settled house framing and roof rafters. Since the project was completed literally during the onset of winter and partially during the actual beginning of the snow storms finding construction related debris months the following Spring after the thaw of the snow would not be uncommon. Any request for additional cleaning of construction related debris would have been responded to if that request was ever to be made but it wasn't. In September of 2010 almost one year after the completion of the project an additional request was made by “The Member’ to cut out a kitchen vent through the existing siding. Since CR was at the height of the busy season of construction we were unable to meet The Members request for additional help in their new project however CR did respond but at that point THE Member had hired on someone else to perform this requested work. Although CR would have been happy to help THE Member out with such a project CR was under no obligation to fulfill this latest request for additional work one year after the project was completed. Upon reading the review posted on Angie's List CR made the attempt to reach out to The Member off line in a potentially more constructive environment and even made the offer to meet the client on site to try and address any remaining concerns. This attempt was not at all "nasty" in nature but a genuine diplomatic attempt to resolve the differences between The Member and CR rather than the back and forth of an online forum. Colonial Remodeling has made every attempt to fulfill “The Member’s” requests and we are truly regretful that we were unable to provide a more pleasant experience to keep “The Member” satisfied. That being said given the enormous challenges and demands of the project we feel CR and it’s representatives did everything possible within their power to accommodate “The Member.” Colonial Remodeling is a family run business serving the DC metropolitan for close to a decade and has completed thousands of projects for satisfied clients.
