Having found Clawes on Angie's list and having noted its high ratings by past users, I requested a measuring for installation of carpet and hardwood floors. Clawes responded promptly and scheduled the visit to measure, which took place as scheduled. Clawes followed up,calling me to let me know that it had the dimensions and suggested I come into store to choose materials. I visite the store and was helped by Tressa. After spending about 30 minutes looking at options, I asked Tressa to give me in writing the costs of two options. She suggested that she email that info that evening or the next day, presumably because she had to confer with the measurer about the existing floor condition, etc. She had my contact data and apparently decided that Clawes did not want my job since I have yet to hear from them -- more than a week later. I could have accepted a reasonable explanation from the business for not wanting to do the work, even tho I had invested a lot of time to get as far as we did in the transaction stage. However, Clawes chose to not even give me a courtesy call. I would never recommend this business. UPDATE: One of the owners called me to apologize for letting my account unattended.

In January 2010 I walked into Clawes Carpets, INC. and was greeted happily by the owners and staff. I brought in the color of my walls and asked them to help me find carpet to compliment my family room wall color. They spent a lot of time with me and showed me several colors and then ordered all the colors that would be a good match and had them delivered directly to my home. They were so kind! Once I selected a color, one of the owners offered to come to my house to give me her opinion on the color! She agreed with me and I selected the color. She even said she wants to look at my family room once the carpet is installed! She and the entire staff feel like family to me! I had to change my delivery date once and they were so kind about doing that. They are terrific- they go way beyond just selling carpet! They are superb!! By the way, the carpet color is gorgeous!
Description of Work: Replaced carpeting in my family room.
This is the second time we have used Clawes Carpet. They installed ceramic tile and carpet in our addition. The tile installer was very skilled and I constantly get comments on how great the tile looks. The installer was diligent, hardworking, and professional. He worked hard to complete our floor quickly so that it would be finished in time for the holidays. Clawes made sure that our carpet was also installed as promised before the holidays. I highly recommend this company. They are very responsive and customer-oriented.

They were very reasonable when it came to working out agreements on the price, for what was in our budget. The installers even entertained the kids and showed them how it worked. With the little one on hand, that's a nice thing. They weren't the greatest at moving the furniture out, and they dinged a few walls. We were having the walls repainted anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.

From the moment I walked into the store, Teresa made me feel welcome and helped me to choose a carpet that would stand up to dogs and lots of human traffic. She also addressed my concerns about the need for a low VOC carpet and pad. Roy measured and provided the estimate. The main hitch was waiting for the carpet from the mill. It took longer than we anticipated, so installation was delayed beyond my expectations. The weather wasn't helpful either. (The pre-Christmas blizzard). The installers did an excellent job. The stairs (difficult due to the configuration) looked abolutely fantastic. I couldn't be more pleased with the job. Everyone was helpful and very oriented to customer satisfaction.

Theresa scheduled the measurement, Helping to pick out appropriate flooring. Roy did the measurement and estimate, allowing that with the carpet, it was difficult to know how much patching/leveling the floor would need. The basement floor was so unlevel it took them nearly a whole day to fill in the valleys and grind down the hills. By the time they finished it looked like they had poured a new floor. The next morning they came back, smoothed out the patches and laid the vinyl. It looks absolutely gorgeous. They did a terrific job. And despite the additional labor and materials, Roy said he would not charge me extra.

The experience was very positive overall with the salesman, Bobby, even reworking the door and threshhold to the garage so the thicker carpet would not restrict opening the door (very reasonable additional charge). He also found a carpet remnant to use on the basement stairs to hold the cost down. The only thing that prevented an excellent rating on quality was a manufacturing flaw in the family room carpet itself. This wasn't Clawes fault but the installers missed the flaws and installed the carpet. They responded promptly to my call, verified the carpet was bad and replaced it at no extra charge as they should. Moving everything in and out of the room twice was an irritation. As I have noticed with many service firms, communication was not high on their priorities. I initiated all calls to determine the status of my order. I also expressed interest in hardwood floors for the living and dining rooms and had to practically badger them for an estimate. Their estimate was excellent but their seemingly low interest in the project prompted me to negotiate an even lower price from a supplier I had used several years before.

At the time of the estimate, the designer brought out a high quality carpet which was very similar to what I had existing. I agreed to have the work done because I thought they were going to install the same quality of carpet that was existing and that the designer had showed me. We agreed on a price of $10,000 for my house and $3,500 to install carpet in my sons basement. When the installers started on the first room of my home I stopped them because I noticed that the carpet they were installing was not the same quality as what I had chosen with the designer. They were removing top quality 1 1/2 inch thick carpet that was was only 4 years old in order to change the color to complete our recent remodel. They assured me that the carpet would "fluff up" and that it was just matted down from being rolled up. They told me to turn on the heat to fluff it up. Also, the installation crew had body odor so strong that my house and carpet reeked of uncleanliness for weeks. I was so upset with the job that I had them come back out and put in thicker padding to try and solve the issue. At that time they told me that they would refund some of my money because I was not satisfied. Even after the other padding was installed, you can see on the base board that it is still about one inch thinner than what was existing and you can feel the plywood floor as you walk across the room. Clawes has been giving me stories and playing games with me since I initially called to complain. I am not going to pay them the $4,400 they requested because that would be paying $18,000 for 3,000 sq ft of carpet with is ridiculous. I believe that I have been ripped off and I want others to know how Clawes Carpet does business. I want my old carpet, that I still have to be reinstalled and get my money back, or I want the job done like we had originally agreed with the same quality or better, or I will be forced to take them to court to have this resolved.
Description of Work: I contacted Clawes to have the carpet and padding replaced in six bedrooms for my recently remodeled high end home. I wanted the same premium quality carpet and padding that was existing but wanted to change the color to match the new color scheme in our home.

Response from Clawes Carpets Inc
Clawes Carpets disagrees with the statements made by this customer and will address the issues below: First, customer states that he contracted for six bedrooms when in fact only four bedrooms, steps, and a hallway were carpeted. The other two loft bedrooms were eliminated from the quote due to customer's budgetary constraints. Second, customer asked the designer to bring out carpets that matched his house. Designer brought out Masland "Essex" and "Shangri-La." "Essex" has approximately a 90 oz. face-weight and "Shangri-La" has an approximately 120 oz. one. These are the heaviest carpets made today. Customer eliminated these carpets due to budgetary constraints. The designer came out to customers house again and showed customer Tuftex carpet "It's All Right," which has a 60 oz faceweight. This carpet is one of Shaw's highest rated carpets and is rated 5 stars (the highest rating Shaw gives). Third, the customer states that they registered a complaint with the installer about the carpet quality not matching what was contracted. Our installer states that the customer asked for a second layer of padding to be installed. The installer told customer that it could not be done. Customer never contacted Clawes Carpets about this issue. Fourth, customer states that they were so upset about the job that they contacted us to come out and install thicker padding. Actually, customer called and we confirmed that the carpet was the same as what was contracted. Carpet was tested by the manufacturer and met all industry specifications. Customer did not demand the padding. In an effort to please the customer, we offered to put in a thicker padding at no charge to the customer. The customer said that this would satisfy him. Therefore, we moved all the furniture and uninstalled the newly installed carpet, and changed out the padding with upgraded padding and reinstalled the carpet again. Several weeks later, the customer called back and said he was not satisfied. Fifth, customer states that we were going to refund some of his money. Clawes Carpets offered to refund the area rug that the customer no longer wanted (approx. $600). Sixth, customer states that we are requesting him to pay an additional $4,400. We did not request any additional payment from the customer; he said he was going to replace the carpet and pay for it. He asked if we would do it at cost and we agreed. We brought out inexpensive polyester carpet. The price came to $4,400. Customer agreed on the price he would pay. He then called back two weeks later to rescind and asked us to pay instead and we declined. The customer's real complaint is that the carpet matches his son's house but not his house. Even though he picked the carpet, the customer does not want to claim any responsibility for the product he picked. The carpet installed is what was contracted and meets all industry specifications. The customer, his wife, and the decorator all agreed upon the carpet to be installed. Clawes Carpets has been serving Northern Virginia for over 30 years. It is a true family business. Our reputation and repeat business defines us. Please read the pages of A+ ratings that we have received. You will find that we are a company who cares about our customers and prides ourselves on customer service.

Great experience. Terrific results. We researched Angie?s list for --?A? rated --Discount giving -- retailers within 25 miles of our home. We considered three Angie listed retailers for carpeting. We experienced a good first impression when we were assisted by Teresa at the showroom. She spent time to explain all the various types of carpeting and recommendations on how we might save money based on our needs. We were in a time crunch to have the carpets installed before Christmas and working around construction in one bedroom that was near completion. Roy came to the home, measured and provided the estimate. He was really efficient with his laser device and it literally took no time at all and much less than the other two estimates. The crew showed up on the scheduled day (despite the 22? snow storm that weekend). They performed a very professional carpet installation over the two days scheduled for the installation. They worked with the current contractor and their crew to time the installation avoiding interference. This experience went very well and much better than expected. We have decided to have them also install some wood flooring next month.

Most of our experience was in the selection process. The young man at the store was very helpful in showing us the different options and respected our price range. He did not try to push us into a more expensive carpet and was willing to show us which was a better deal. In the end, we probably paid more for carpeting than we would have paid at the major home improvement outlets, but it was well worth it. We are very pleased with the quality of the carpet. The installation was like a homeowner's dream....they showed up when they said they would and they installed the carpet quickly and professionally. We would definitely use them again in the future.

We bought the carpets from them. They removed the old carpeting and hauled it away and then replaced it with the new one. I had a very tight timeline to get back in. They were really good at working with me to get me back in as quick as possible. That was very good. The price was a little high but their quality of work was good. I got the value for my money.

I originally wanted to do the tile like a ceramic tile. They told me about the new material which was a huge cost saver. It was half as much as that would have been for the tile. They were as cost effective as possible. I am happy with the end result. The pricing was better for this one than the carpeting job that they had done in October.

Everyone at Clawes is very pleasant and knowledgeable. It's nice to deal with a locally owned business in which the people helping you have a stake in being certain you're satisfied. Roy was great in helping us select flooring, urging us to take samples home, and it has turned out to be beautiful. The work was performed promptly, as scheduled, and they were very flexible in scheduling for our convenience. The installers were very pleasant. Our only problem, and a tip for anybody else doing this work, was that our marble bathroom floor, just installed, cracked where the workers put their compressor, likely from the vibration. Even though it was a tiny hairline crack, we had to replace several marble tiles, which entailed pulling out the vanity and granite top--not good. However, we have no proof the compressor caused this, and I did assent to putting furniture into the bathroom (on pieces of carpet the installers laid down). I just didn't think about the compressor. For these reasons, I didn't demand that Clawes contribute to the repair.

I had some very specific flooring options that I was looking for so these we're apple for apple comparisons between several name brand vendors as well as locals companies.Clawe's made themselves available under short notice offer lower pricing and we're easy to work with. Roy had great ideas and suggestions on how I could go about getting the best bang for my buck and delivered on all time lines for deliver/installation. Installation crews (broken up between two installations, one for the carper and one for the laminate) showed up on time, we're focused on the job and took pride in the work they we're doing. We relied solely on Angie?s list for this referral?we did not have any other referral. We went into Clawes and worked with Roy. He listened to what we needed and then provided us with an excellent choice for our needs. In fact, he directed us to a sale carpet so we were able to save money. When we called at a later date Roy?s sister was just as helpful. They showed up on time and got to work right away. They went to great lengths to care for our baseboards and the installation was perfect. I would highly recommend Clawes?it is family run business and you are treated as family!

Highly positive experience from start to finish. Prompt arrival for estimate. Part of the flooring issue was the fact that the three rooms being done were all located adjacent to existing previously installed hardwoods. Clawes went to the trouble of ordering a sample box in the same make and color as the existing flooring which as it turned out, no longer was the same color as the original flooring. Clawes then brought a number of samples to the house in order to determine a good match. Once matched the job went very smoothly. There were no issues in moving furniture, carpet removal, fllooring installation or replacement of the furniture. The job was completed in one (long, started around 8:30 and finshed around 6:30) ) day as promised. Clawes also came in with the best price of five estimates which ranged from $3,900 to $5,200.

It turned out great and I was satisfied with everything that was done. They were not the cheapest but we wanted good quality. They were professional.
Description of Work: Clawes Carpets Inc installed hardwood flooring.
Superb. We visited the showroom and worked with Roy Clawes and his sister. Since we were doing a lot of work, they spent a lot of time with us matching flooring and paint colors. They worked with us to co-ordinate dates with painters, as we had the same spaces painted (another Angies List choice). The overall job came out perfect. The downstairs hall flooring was a Brazilian Cherry herring bone pattern...very labor intensive, very exacting, including fitting 2" triangular pieces along the wall. The carpeting crew also did an excellent job, especially capping the edges of the stairs. The Dura-ceramic also came out great. Since they had to pull the toilet in the bathroom, I had them install a new one. They put in all new baseboard trim as well.
