first they were very friendly on the phone and i immediately felt at ease. then roy clawes came out to my house. he was timely and most of all he was honest, a rare thing in this day. he examined my floors and told me that although they would gladly refinish my floors they did not need it. he also gave me some reference on products to use to clean/polish my floors. let me just say that if i need to have my floors finished in the future i will be contacting clawes flooring
Description of Work: i had clawes come out to my house to give me a price on refinishing my hardwood floors.

Both delivery personnel for flooring and installers showed up as promised. Workers set to work immediately removing existing carpeting and tack strips. Installers worked consistenly with little breaktime for most of the day but completed the work in less than 8 hours. Clean up was very good with hardly any trace of any work having been done on premises. The flooring was installed with very tight tolerances and so far no squeaks or uneven edges have been noted. Their prices are reasonable for good quality products and they treat everyone with courtesy and respect.
Description of Work: Estimate and work to remove existing carpet in master bedroom, hallway and four closets and replace with hardwood flooring. The task also included new quarter round around the entire room, inside the dormer bump outs and the closets. Workers moved heavier furniture that we could not manage and worked around while installing the flooring. The work was scheduled to accomodate our availability and work was very professionally done!

we didn't use them- too expansive and a lot more product estimate that what was needed.
Description of Work: I chose Clawes because it had more than 50 reviews from other Angie members. But I was disappointed with their price estimates. The estimator Bob Clawes was very knowledgeable and gave some good advice. He was punctual and professional. However, his price quote and measurements were the most expansive that we got from anyone else. Needless to say we did'nt hire him. My question to the Co. is? If we were able to get the same job done from someone else for more than 2k less and with less product used than what Clawes estimated, how does Clawes justifies its estimates? There were some other cos. that also over-estimated, but Clawes estimate was the highest of them all. My advice to consumers: Get multiple estimates before you hire.

Clawes came quickly to provide an estimate, which was surprisingly reasonable considering that random plank flooring is not done by many area contractors any more and considering the amount of labor that had to go into the installation process. We worked out with them a convenient time when we were planning to be away, since we had to vacate during the three days of stain and varnish application. On the first day of installation, before we left and before they began staining the wood, they showed us what the color would look like on a sample scrap--we were delighted at how closely they could match the 10-year-old flooring in the living room (although it was not an exact match, to take into account the aging of the pre-existing floor). They did an excellent job overall; we had a few small issues (a drop of stain on our carpeted steps; a couple of nicks in the walls where the wood was hauled in or out), but they made it right cheerfully by offering us a discount on future installations. We were pleased with the work and with the service--it's a family business, and they all had a wonderful attitude about customer service. The workers who actually laid and stained the flooring were excellent, too--I especially appreciated the fact that they cleaned up thoroughly after a dusty, messy job.
Description of Work: Three rooms of random-plank hardwood flooring (dining room, hallway, powder room) had to be replaced because of damage from a water leak. Clawes sold us the replacement flooring, ripped up the old flooring, repaired the sub flooring, installed the new unfinished random plank flooring, stained and finished it to match the existing flooring in my living room the did not have to be replaced.

We went to Clawes because they got a great rating on Angie's list. Our basement flooded with the last flood which ruined our rec room carpet so we went to buy new carpet for the rec room and family room. The two gentlemen we worked with at the store were very professional and nice and made sure to keep up within our stated budget. They took our information and said they would get up samples that we requested and to expect them early the next week. They sent an estimator to our house on Monday and we were expecting a quote from them shortly thereafter. After not hearing from them, we called them and they said to expect a call later in the week with the quote. We didn't receive any call back and no samples ever arrived. I called again on Saturday, a week later, and they had the quote (although didn't explain why i had to wait so long for it and why nobody ever called us back) and she said she would call Fed Ex about the samples. Well it's been three weeks and still no samples. We figured if they were this unresponsive knowing we were going to buy it didn't fare well for the future if we were to do business with them. They also couldn't meet our time frame of five weeks. We ended up going with Fairfax Floors and are extremely happy with them. Would recommend them highly.

The job went as expected. They assisted with selection, were very respectful of my budget (I'm planning to move and didn't want to spend too much), and completed the job with no problems. They moved all the furniture and appliances, and did so without a nick on the walls. I'm very happy with the job.

I had been looking for new vinyl flooring for a small bathroom for a long time, with no success - both at other flooring stores and on the Internet. I just couldn't find a simple white small-scale tile-like design. On the day of a huge rainstorm, I called Clawes and asked if they have a big selection of vinyl flooring samples. Debbie said yes and invited me to come and look at them. Even though she was fielding dozens of calls from customers with wet basement who wanted carpet removal & replacement, Debbie patiently showed me vinyl samples and helped me find one I liked. The same day, an estimator came and measured the bathroom floor. Clawes gave me a phone estimate for material alone or material and installation. Since another contractor is remodeling the bathroom, I chose to purchase just the material and special glue for installing it.Clawes gave me a good price, the vinyl came in soon, and Clawes held it for a couple of weeks until the contractor was able to come and pick it up.The vinyl is not installed yet, but I like the pattern and Clawes provided wonderful service.
Description of Work: Provided vinyl flooring material for a small bathroom.

From the moment I walked into the showroom I was made to feel as if I was part of a "family." This was the best purchasing experience I've ever had! After discussing my needs, I was shown the perfect carpet and fell in love at first sight. The entire process from measuring to installation was a dream. The installers were professional and experts in their trade making the installation seamless (no pun intended) and perfect! They moved all the heavy furniture, did not damage/scratch furniture or walls, and made sure they placed the furniture where I wanted it after the install. Please note that I did my due diligence and got estimates from other flooring companies. My neighbor had a recent install from Clawes and she was very happy. Coupled with the reviews on Angies List I decided to purchase from Clawes even though their quote was slightly higher than the others. I've learned during my lifetime that cheaper isn't always better. I am extremely happy that I chose Clawes. I highly recommend this established family-oriented company for all your flooring needs!

I can't rate this company high enough. I am delighted with the work performed by Clawes Carpets. They are a family-owned business, and everyone working in the store and who came to the house for estimates or to install was friendly and helpful -- as well as punctual. All their workmen were polite and very careful with my furniture -- and there was a lot of it to move as they installed the flooring. They also graciously moved the several large boxes of books that I had unloaded from the bookcases. In addition, the job took longer than expected, and Roy Clawes came to the house and told the crew it was important to finish the job that day. They stayed late and finished the job -- eleven hours in all. Clawes matched the existing hardwood in the entryway perfectly (and it's 25 years old). Several visitors have commented that the new wood floors are beautiful and that the workmanship is excellent. The new granite countertops and stainless sink were installed prior to the flooring, and again, the workmen did a beautiful job. Clawes also instructed me on the best way to care for the wood floor and for the granite. I'm very pleased with everything, and I will be back to have them install carpeting in the rest of the house. I'm sure you will be equally pleased with the Clawes family and the way they do business.
Description of Work: Clawes installed hardwood floors in the main level of my home (living room, dining room, kitchen and powder room), including new baseboard in the kitchen and powder room. They also installed granite countertops and a new stainless steel sink in my kitchen. In addition they provided advice and product for removing pet stains from a couch.

I visited several carpet stores, including one recommended by my realtor. The people at Clawes were friendly with great customer service (no big pressure pitch, flat out cheerful friendly and informative) and their prices were better. I had a particular deadline and they worked hard to meet it (and were successful). The hardwood floors were completed ahead of schedule. The guys were courteous, punctual, and they cleaned up after themselves. When I had a question/concern about one part of the carpet install they came back right away and addressed my concern 100%. My one 'lesson learned' is that I wish I had pushed a bit more on upgrading the pad. They assured me the one I bought was high quality and I do think it is but I think I would have been happier with the next level up. All in all I would highly recommend Clawes carpet. Great customer service, great attitude, competitive prices, family owned.

Carpet arrived sooner than estimated. I was the one not prepared for the quick response in getting their estimate and getting the carpet from the warehouse. Once a date for installation was agreed upon they showed up on time, moved furniture at no cost; removed small amount of old carpet and pad, and performed an outstanding job. Wasted time going to other dealers. Would definitely recommend them to others and have already done so. Great price on carpet, great quality carpet and great installation, Your only regret will be that if you move from this area you will not be able to use them.

I compared prices at Clawes and another vendor's showroom. Each allowed me to take home samples to see which colors and styles worked best in my room. The other vendor showed me the style I ended up choosing. I thought either place would have done a good job, but Clawes offered slightly better pricing, so I went with them. The crew was efficient and did a great job. I am VERY happy with the results.

After having had a poor experience with a local floor refinisher, I was pleased to have a wonderful experience with the Clawes company. Roy Clawes was professional and reassuring. Fabrizio, his refinisher, matched the color perfectly with adjacent floors and did a great job. The company even replaced pet stained boards, knowing that I was very concerned about that. The price was more than fair. I intend to use this company again in the near future.

GO HERE FIRST and you will not waste your time dealing with other vendors who 1. are overpriced, 2. do not care about conducting business and 3. do not know carpeting and flooring. Before you buy carpet/flooring, educate yourself. Go to sources like http://www.carpetguru.com/ and learn about products and industry practices before you waste time or give any vendor your money. Fortunately, we just wasted time trying to deal with stores recommended by our contractor and architect. Fortunately, the 1st was so overpriced it was ridiculous (in addition to taking forever to send us a proposal), and the second did not get back to us when he promised. (We were on a tight schedule because of a whole-house renovation where timing and installation were critical.) Also, neither one knew what we needed for a home exercise room. The 2nd one was going to sell us a hard rubber floor suitable for a high traffic gym. We went to Clawes in Vienna and the store manager suggested that we go to the Braddock Rd store to see more samples. We went to that store and worked with Jessica. She listened to what we needed, understood the time pressure for coordinating installation with other activities during renovation and our moving back home, and gave us her undivided attention. She scheduled carpeting and flooring installations (to assure timing), and helped us choose products. When we said we wanted flooring for an exercise room, she called her brother to come to the store on his day off to explain the different products to us. Oh, yes, Clawes is a 35 year old family business and their dedication and knowledge are obvious. Products, prices, service, installation and customer-friendliness are A+. Just go here even if you have to drive an hour past many other carpet/flooring stores.
Description of Work: After getting inflated prices and no responses from 2 carpet/flooring stores in Rockville, MD, we drove to Clawes in VA because they were highly rated on Angie's List. We bought carpeting and floor tiles and had Clawes install same.

Our older townhouse needed all new floors, including hardwoods on the main floor, vinyl in the bathrooms, and carpet throughout. We interviewed several vendors, from big-name chain stores to little one-man shops. Clawes Carpets had been recommended by a contractor we trusted, so we stopped into their showroom in Fairfax. We discussed the project with Roy, who suggested a number of options. A few days later their estimator came by to measure. Their bid was not the lowest, but it was very competitive and, as it turned out, well worth it for the quality of service provided. The installation was done by three separate crews, each specializing in a particular type of flooring. The crews showed up promptly at 8 each morning, worked straight through until they were finished, and cleaned up everything before they left for the day. Everything went very smoothly, the work was well done, and the sales office called after completion to be sure we were satisfied. Start to finish, the whole project was very professionally managed. Highly recommended.

We had gone to a big-box home improvement store and received a complete estimate (for which we were charged $35) and the estimate detailed about $2,000 of "extra" charges for things like hauling away old carpeting, removing carpeting and padding, etc. - and also specifically stated that the company would NOT remove or haul some portions of carpeting that they thought were badly pet-stained, which meant that we would have to do it ourselves or hire a handyman to do that for about $400. So despite the relatively low cost of the materials, the overall job to recarpet our entire condo would have been well over $6K. We contacted Clawes Carpets, outlined our concerns with the other firm, and they were extremely professional and helpful. They came out and estimated the job, and also suggested a way to treat any underlying flooring to prevent future pet stains (which the other firm had not suggested). The estimate was free and thorough, and did NOT include lots of extra charges. We had an appraisal scheduled for our condo so we needed the carpeting replaced by a certain date. The first two shades of carpet that we wanted were not going to be manufactured and shipped to northern Virginia until too late to install, so we went with our third choice color. Again, they were really good about working with us to help us find a color and make sure that it would be available for installation prior to the appraisal. The only concern that I had was that I was told it would be a one-day job, but instead they ripped out all of the old carpeting and treated the flooring to prevent pet stains on a Friday, and then installed the new padding and carpeting on Monday. Theoretically, the substance they put on the floor needed 12 hours to dry completely, so they could have installed the new carpeting on Saturday but they didn't have a crew available. This required us to board our dogs for four days rather than one or two, and we were forced to find another place to stay over the entire weekend (which also happened to be my birthday), which was inconvenient. However, the removal of old carpeting, floor treatment, and the installation of new carpeting was extremely professional. The crew was friendly and polite and very thorough. The new carpeting looks great, we love how it feels, and the color has worked out well even though it wasn't our first choice. I would definitely use them again as it's clear they care about their work and they want their customers to be happy. Next time around I will make sure I lock down exactly when the work will be done and the time frame for having it completed, but other than that they did a super job.

We obtained 3 estimates, got recommendations from friends & neighbors, and researched Angies List & Washington Checkbook. We decided to hire Clawes Carpet. They are a family owned business and they have years of expertise. Tim and Teressa were very helpful and assisted us in choosing a floor type and color based on our needs. Roy measured our floors before and after demolition of our kitchen walls, to ensure proper measurements and sufficient materials. They came on the scheduled day promptly and installed the floor in one day. The workers cleaned up well after themselves. The floor looks beautiful. The flooring around one floor vent is a bit tricky but Roy is very attentive to our concerns. Clawes Carpet was excellent. Roy even offered us suggestions on how to save money by refinishing our wood stairs. We plan on hiring them again.

The whole experience was great. At the store, the family that owns the business, the Clawes family, was very friendly and very professional. They helped us choose the hardwood and carpet that we needed for our house. In my opinion, their prices are competitive, and include the installation, which is extra in some stores. We were very lucky that the hardwood that we wanted was on sale. The job was done exactly on the date that was agreed. The men showed up on time and finished when they said they would. They were professional and everything was cleaned up at the end of the day. We are very pleased with the finished product. We highly recommend Clawes Carpet.
Description of Work: We dealt with 2 crews. The first day 5 men came. They removed the existing carpet and installed a beautiful hardwood floor. The second day a crew of 2 men came. I called Clawes for an estimate. They gave me a ballpark number over the phone and sent someone (Chuck) over to take a look at the job and give a more precise estimate. Unfortunately my timeline for the work didn't mesh with theirs so I went with another contractor. (Specifically, they don't keep much of the flooring in stock so we would have had to order it and then make an appointment for installation once the product arrived. Under normal circumstances that would have been fine, but the condo was unsafe in it's current condition and I didn't want my renters to have to live there for even a day with the severe buckling running the length of the living room.) However, here's what I really appreciated about Clawes: 1.) They were very responsive and adjusted their response time to my sense of urgency; 2.) They were open late, in fact my first call was after the close of business hours but someone still answered the phone; 3.) Each time I called I spoke to a different person, but it didn't matter. I didn't have to start from scratch, they picked up the conversation where I left it off with the last person; and, 4.) Everyone I spoke to was friendly and very customer-service oriented. In fact they imparted good information to me that contributed to the decision I made about the replacement flooring.
Description of Work: I had severe water damage to a hardwood floor at my rental condo. I needed to find a contractor to replace the flooring before my renters returned from their vacation 9 days later.

I went into the store to get an idea of cost for carpeting and hardwood floors. Everyone was very helpful in explaining all the different flooring. It is a family owned business and everyone there was very nice and went out of their way to be helpful. I went back a second time to set up a time for an estimate and than to place my order . I spoke with one of the owners, Roy. He was very professional and helpful, a very nice person to do business with. I had a very short time in which to have the flooring done which had to be done after the painting and before moving in to condo, Roy was very accommodating. His workers did a great job and were very professional and pleasant to deal with. This job took most of the day. I did have a nail that came up and informed Roy of this and the next day it was fixed. I would gladly use them again. It was a very good experience and I didn't have to worry about the job not getting done right and on time, being new to the area this was a pleasant surprise.

From the first phone call to ask about their hours, I dealt with lovely people (with just one exception noted below). This is a family run business, and they take it very seriously. It feels like all the family (sons, daughters, in-laws, nephews, nieces, you name it) work in the business -- and they are all lovely folks. I used the store closest to me, in Fairfax, managed by Roy Clawes (one of the sons of the company founder). I went to that store to look at samples of hardwood flooring and was treated so well that I didn't want to go anywhere else to get an estimate. They helped me pick different samples and encouraged me to take them home to see what looked best in the lighting conditions in my home; they even carried the samples to my car. They sent an estimator to measure the job, and even sent some additional samples with him just in case. I had a written estimate and a contract. They asked for half the price in advance and the other half at the end of the job. I asked for installation on a specific date and they accommodated the request. On the day of the installation, the crew arrived within the window that Mr. Clawes had given me. It was a 3-person crew, two of whom were very nice and professional but one was not, and that individual did not comport himself with the respect that I expect to receive in my own home. I had explained that my walls had been recently painted so please don't lean things against them; the crew member who was disrespectful proceeded to lean his heavy tools against my newly painted walls. By then, I was concerned about whether they would do a careful job and listen to what I needed. I called Roy Clawes at the store and he couldn't have been nicer. He drove to my home immediately, looked over the situation, talked to the crew, and took a lot of time to make sure that I and my husband understood that doing a first rate job for us was his absolute priority. He was very reassuring, returning after an hour or so to make sure that everything was still on track. The flooring looked beautiful at the end. The crew cleaned up everything. I noticed that they vacumed as they went along to minimize sawdust flying all over the place. When they left the floors were clean and the room was tidy. It was unfortunate that one person's rudeness got things off on the wrong foot. The Clawes family is first rate and they really care about doing excellent work. I am very pleased with this company and I will definitely do business with them againt (still have kitchen and bathrooms to redo!).
Description of Work: They installed hardwood floors in a bedroom, alcove, and hallway. The service included ripping out the old carpet and removing it from our home.

We went with Clawes because of their great reviews, solid warranty, great selection and because their price was the best we found. The installers did a great job, finishing by early evening (we would suggest that if they started a bit earlier in the day, they would inconvenience folks a bit less and be home in time for dinner with their own families!). They removed the old carpet, vacuumed and moved furniture back into place. We were very impressed when we saw them take an extra moment to stand back to check that they had placed a dining room piece just right. These two very nice men did as neat a job as one could ask for and the carpet looks great. We highly recommend Clawes Carpets of Clifton.
Description of Work: We purchased and they installed carpet for two floors of our townhouse.

We selected carpet at the Vienna store. Our salesman, Tim, was excellent. He went out of his way to pull samples of whatever carpets we wanted to see, gave us time to talk about them, and moved on to other possibilities. There was no pressure to pick one, or even to buy at Clawes, but he provided all the information we needed to know about the carpet options and installation methods. He gave us samples to compare at home, and when we went back to get a different sample of one we hadn't seen, he ordered it and let us know promptly when it arrived. When we decided, Clawes representative came to our house, made an accurate measurement, and explained most (see below) details we needed to know. About a week later we had scheduled installation. The installers came on time, worked professionally, and did a fine job. They nailed down loose floorboards and laid down the carpet tautly and efficiently. The only surprise I hadn't thought about and no one had mentioned was that after putting in the new, thicker carpet, the bedroom doors needed to be cut down to allow the doors to open/close over the thicker carpet. The installer suggested we get a carpenter to cut down the doors and reinstall them, but I had the tools to do this myself, and had them back up within a couple hours. Still, this probably should have been mentioned at measurement time, and it would have been nice if the installers were prepared to do this work, even if there would have been an additional charge. The carpet looks good, installation itself (less the doors) was fine, and we felt the price was fair. We would recommend Clawes Carpet, and we enjoyed working with Tim in the store.
