What a pleasurable experience to deal with Roy Clawes and his sister Theresa (and her lovable dog Hugo) - service with a smile. They seem to love what they are doing, and love working with the customers. Roy is a real perfectionist so my wife and I felt very comfortable that the job was going to be done well - and indeed it was. What struck us at first is the quality of the work - perfect edges, perfect butting, and the new floor in the kitchen was mated (feathered) with the old floor in the adjacent living room so that it is impossible to tell that there were two separate floors there before they started. It still amazes me every time I look at how the two rooms flow together. That was a real professional touch - and shows how good the floor crew was. We used white oak which was the same as the old floor and the staining color matches beautifully, especially given that the old stain in the living room (which we did not sand) is 30 years old. The upstairs hallway was sanded and stained and thresholds were added between the hall and unsanded rooms for good appearance. We choose not to have the whole house sanded as the prospect of moving a house of furniture was out of the question. The price was excellent, and the best quote we had and, although Roy forgot to add a few things to our initial quote that we had asked for, he did them without charge! No nickel and dimming here! The contractors Roy recommended were a pleasure also to deal with (plumber, carpenter) and they were very reasonably priced. My wife and I are very, very happy with the work - can't find anything to complain about, in fact! They have our highest recommendation. You will enjoy the experience if you hire Clawes for your own work.
Description of Work: Replaced kitchen floor which was destroyed due to "flood". Replaced tile floor in entrance hallway with wood floor, sanded and finished adjacent floor in dining room and upstairs hallway. In both kitchen and entrance hallway removed old linoleum floors and subfloors so that new oak floor was all same level between rooms. In 1/2 bath replaced floor and subfloor with tile floor. Used white oak and finished to match floor in living room.
The quality of the job was great from start to finish. The crew was respectful of our freshly painted walls, and they aligned the wood perfectly. They finished in less time than initially planned, and always kept us in the loop.
Description of Work: Roy was the second flooring person we met with, and he was the last. Roy, the owner, came out promptly to provide an estimate and gave advice on what flooring to choose. He was obviously knowledgeable about all kinds of flooring and was very honest with us. He did everything he could to accommodate our very tight timeline, and his team came through. We had hardwood installed throughout our condo and tiling done in the sunroom. Roy was always available via phone and was in the showroom when he needed his advice and counsel. We had a set back due to noise complaints in our condo and, despite a snow storm, Roy changed the schedule around so that we would have the floor done before we moved in. The floors look amazing, and they stained the quarter round perfectly. The team was prompt, kind, and very respectful of our space. We wish we had more floors for Roy and his team to do because we are so utterly impressed and will return with any future projects!
I was very favorably impressed with Clawes group, from Roy who gave the estimate and I could call him with questions, also met him at one of the store to go over the selection, the workers were very competent and professional in removing old vinyl and installing the new Alterna tiles, they grouted, installed cove base and metal edging, were very neat (also). Roy Clawes was very accommodating and flexible in assisting me with the selection, I didn't feel any pressure. also the store employees at Fairfax store (I was there twice) were most helpful in answering my questions and assisted me in showing various types of carpet. The last time the kitchen floor was installed was 20 plus years ago. Clawes pricing was also reasonable. I plan to use them in the future for carpet installation
Description of Work: I called Clawes carpet and requested an estimate for kitchen flooring and carpet in hallway and bedroom, Roy Clawes came to my house to give estimate, he was very professional and friendly, also I met him at one of their stores in Fairfax to check samples. The store employees were also very helpful and extremely pleasant to deal with, one could ask questions and look at various materials with their assistance. The kitchen work was scheduled for a few weeks away, the two men crew arrived and went to work, removed old vinyl and lay the new Alterna tiles, worked very well and were very nice young men. They came back to install the cove base and metal edging.

Clawes Carpet provided outstanding service from walking into their showroom on Braddock Road to carpet installation in my house. The professionals at Clawes discussed carpet options and selections at the showroom and when we told them we were having the house painted also they recommeded we paint before carpet installation and offered to hold our carpet selection in their warehouse until we needed installation. Clawes sent one of the owners out to measure the rooms we wanted new carpet installed to include closets and their measurements were proven accurate on installation day. After we had the house painted we called and set up a installation appointment and Clawes professionals did an outstanding job installing our carpet. They moved furniture required to be moved and after installation set it back in the proper place. The installation professionals worked continuously without a lunch break and were very courtious. My experience with this family run business was outstanding and I reommend them to others.

Due to an unfortunate instance of cat territorialism, our second- to third-floor carpeted stairwell (townhouse) had become untenable. After reading other Angie's List reviews, I contacted Clawes about replacing the carpeting on this stairwell as well as the third-level hallway with hardwood flooring. We also wanted a durable, neutral carpet runner on the stairs to reduce the slipping inherent to two small kids in socks. I worked with Roy, one of the Clawes family, on our estimate. He was prompt and professional, and the quote was about what we'd expected based on previous flooring work in our home by another company. Roy brought flooring samples to match the second-floor shading (our laminate flooring). We set up the flooring installation, and Roy sent me off to one of the Clawes carpet locations to choose the carpet for our runner. His brother assisted me there and was very helpful. The flooring was delivered to our home ahead of the installation, and the installation proceeded as expected. The team working on the stairs was courteous and as careful as possible. The carpet runner was installed at a later date, and we've been very happy with the finished product! I would absolutely use this company again.
Description of Work: Hardwood flooring installed on a stairwell and a hallway; carpet runner added to the stairwell.

We were very pleased with the whole process. Store personnel were helpful when we were choosing carpet and pad. The guy who came to measure obviously knew what he was doing and quickly drew up a floor plan with dimensions that looked almost like an architectural plan, except it showed how the carpet would be cut and joined using a standard 12' wide roll, so as to make the most of the carpet, minimizing splices and wasted pieces. The installers (three of them) also knew what they were doing and finished the whole job in one day. The installers maneuvered the heavy rolls up and down stairs and around corners and got them positioned with no wall rubs on our newly painted walls. I did, however, have to touch up the floor molding in a few places caused by some dings from those knee-banger things that carpet installers use. We very happy with the results overall, and I would definitely recommend them .
Description of Work: Had all the carpet replaced top to bottom in two-story house with finished basement. Two rooms had hardwood floors, but carpeted area was around 2000 sq. ft., incuding carpet on two stairways. Old carpet and pad removed and taken away, new carpet and pad laid down.

I visited the showroom to view carpet and hardwood selections. Service was attentive and they made is easy to narrow down the choices (which can be overwhelming). Brought home samples and had a few samples ordered from the manufacturer. The hardwood was an easy selection because I wanted the same as on the main floor of the house--common 3/4 inch pre-finished natural oak. Carpeting selection required a lot more hand-wringing. Finally made the choice and am happy with it--much thicker, softer and better looking than the original 14 year old carpeting. For several areas of the house I selected to upgrade the pad to a waterproof pad, in case of pet or people accidents involving liquids. It was about 3 weeks between contract signing and install -- some of the carpeting had to be ordered from the factory. Scheduling of the install was easy. Installers showed up schedule. The install team was clearly very experienced and had all the right skills and equipment to do the job. They let me vacuum rooms and check the sub-floor as they pulled up old carpet, and were tolerant of my hovering. They wound up using upgraded padding on the stairs (10 lb instead of 8 lb). That was a nice extra, since the contract didn't have that as an upgrade. They hauled away the old carpet, and cleaned up everything. After 2 months the carpet work is still perfect -- no callbacks for any problems...and I'm very picky. Hardwood installers (team of 2) showed up on day 3 as scheduled. Their speed and skill was stunning. There was a lot of cutting involved--halls are about the most time consuming of areas because of all the cutting required. They clearly knew all the tricks and techniques for getting the fit just right. I'm not sure they took a break all day and they were doing a lot of moving as they went in and out to cut pieces of wood. They cleaned up and left behind nothing but a new floor. The quality of the work is excellent. In my extreme pickiness I could only find a quarter-round molding that has a sloppy cut at the end.
Description of Work: I had all the wall to wall carpet in the house replaced -- three different types of carpeting on three levels of the house. This took 1 and a half days to complete. Also, had pre-finished oak hardwood flooring installed in the upstairs hallway to replace carpeting. This was a full day job (large hall with lots of angles).

At the store they were very pleasant to work with and very patient with my taking home lots of samples. They were very knowledgeable about flooring and explained things thoroughly. Materials came in before scheduled so we moved up the installation date. The workers came at the time they said they would and installation began. They moved the heavy things for us. Afterwards, they cleaned up after themselves and put everything back in its place. Will certainly use them again in the future.

Clawes provided useful advice in choosing the best type of tile (versus hardwood) for the kitchen and foyer. Very patient staff! Excellent follow-up customer service, when I wasn't pleased with the quarter round used in the dining room - Roy came by the house the next night at the end of the day (nearly 9:30pm) and offered to order new quarter round. He didn't have to do that but it shows the length this company will go to please it's customers. I'll be using Clawes again to replace the carpet in the living room!
Description of Work: Installed hardwood flooring in dining room and Armstrong tile in kichen, hall, bathroom and foyer.
From start to finish the process was very easy and working with the people at Clawes was a joy. The salesman we worked with was very friendly and patient (this was our first experience with buying flooring in many years) and scheduled someone to measure very quickly. The estimate itself took a little longer than it should, slowed by Hurricane Sandy, but it was very complete and detailed. The price was in the middle of the three estimates we got but we decided to go with Clawes based on reviews here on Angie's List as well as the excellent pre-sale service we received. The estimate from Lumber Liquidators was lower but the service was lousy. They basically expected us to buy and deliver the materials ourselves, a completely separate transaction from the installation. The installation by Clawes was also excellent. The workmen arrived on time, were very efficient and friendly, and finished the job in less time than we were told it would take. They cleaned up afterwards and reset the large pieces of furniture with scraps of the old carpet for pads to avoid scratching the new floor. As I said, from start to finish, working with Clawes was a great experience and we will be calling them again to replace the floors in other rooms of the house as we can afford it. Update: I forgot to mention that our salesperson at Clawes was Jeff Horchner.
Description of Work: We needed to replace the carpeting in the living room/dining area of our townhouse and we wanted to install laminate wood flooring. In addition to installing the floor with molding, the job included removing and disposing of the carpet, removing and disposing of some vinyl flooring in the entry way and a small power room adjacent to the living room, and installing laminate flooring in the power room. That last part involved removing and reinstalling a toilet and sink.

Great experience from start to finish. Checked prices with a few places, they were the lowest for the type of carpet/pad we wanted (nothing special). They weren't pushy when we went to check out carpets, which was nice. All of the prices they gave us was for the *installed* price so there were no hidden fees. We later made the purchase and scheduled the install. They showed up on the scheduled date and finished the install quickly and took my old carpet with them. We were very happy with Clawes Carpets and have recommended them to several people since.

Mr. Clawes advised us that the original company who had done the work had not installed it properly and used a power stretcher and that is why it kept getting ripples. He advised us on how we might proceed to get the work done. I was impressed in that he seemed to not just be quoting us for the work but giving us good advice we could act on.

It was great. They were responsive on the phone, they were on time, and the price was fine.
Description of Work: I had them perform extensive carpet cleaning in my condo. It was a white carpet with no pet stains, but some ground-in stains. I'd say more, but that's pretty much all there is.
The best experience I have had with any vendor. Epitome of customer service. Absolutely fantastic in all aspects. Roy, Rebecca and the entire Claws team is a pleasure to work with - True to what they say and offer and extremely professional in implementing the project and also coming back almost a year later and resolving issues. I will recommend Claws in a heartbeat to anybody looking for quality work and reliability. Thank You Ram

had been caused by animals from previous owners of the house. Clawes provided two employees who moved the furniture from the rooms with the hardwood floors. They returned and put the furniture back when the job was completed. The other two teams also moved the furniture and put it back when the job was complete. I would not hesitate to recommend Clawes Carpets to anyone in the market for new flooring.
Description of Work: Removed carpeting in living room, up the stairs and down the hallway in upper level of a 1960 era split level house. Refinished hardwood flooring in dining room, living room, stairs, hallway and three bedrooms; replaced vinyl tile in kitchen, entryway and utility room; carpeted fourth bedroom, office/den and up a set a stairs. While I may have found a company to complete this work at a lesser price, I was sold on using Clawes Carpets based on the positive reviews found on Angie's list. Because of the different floorings involved, three different teams worked on the flooring refurbishment/installation. All were highly professional and proficient at their tasks. My only criticism would be the punctuality of the team that refinished the hardwood floors. They were habitually late even though I verified with them each day as to their arrival time for the next day. Having said that, they did a marvelous job on the floors to include removing several stains that
Sales We used the Vienna store. Mike and Tim were very helpful in showing us options and educating us on carpet. We went a couple of times to find the carpet we wanted. They told us they do not work on commission so that made the sales process go more smoothly. Measuring Originally, we were just going to do the carpeting project. But when Bobby Clawes came to measure, we asked him if it was possible to replace the carpet in our living and dining rooms with hardwoods that would match the hardwoods on the rest of the first floor. We didn't want to have to refinish the whole thing. He thought they could come very close to matching. So we got an estimate for both projects. Bobby was also very patient about answering all our questions. Price We didn't get competitive quotes because we tend to focus more on the quality of the provider. However, we did have some data that allowed us to do some price comparisons from previous work we had done and the price seemed reasonable. Logistics We had a very specific window for when we wanted the work done so we did our shopping 6 to 8 weeks in advance. So, Clawes was able to accommodate our exact need dates. Installation The hardwood was installed and finished over 5 days in November. The hardwood crew did a wonderful job. They were prompt, courteous, communicative about the process and answering our questions, and respectful of our home. The floors turned out amazing and matched so well, you can't really tell old from new. The carpeting was installed on December 7. Edgar and his team did an outstanding job. The carpet looks beautiful, and the installation went seamlessly (pun intended). It looks like just one huge continuous piece of carpet throughout the whole upstairs. Conclusion Redoing your floors is a disruptive and stressful experience. Working with a quality company like Clawes made that process as easy as it ever could be. I would unhesitatingly recommend them to anyone.

This was our second time dealing with Clawes. The first was for our townhouse where they installed a new hardwood floor on the middle level and replacement carpet on the third floor. We were very satisfied the first time, so we went back to them when we purchased an existing single family home. Clawes installed replacement carpet through most of our single family house. Clawes also replaced the carpet in our dining room with hardwood floor. They were able to match the new hardwood flooring with the existing hardwood flooring in the foyer, hallway, and kitchen. Both crews (carpet and hardwood flooring) worked quickly and were very courteous. They did a nice job cleaning up before leaving. In particular, the hardwood floor crew showed an outstanding attention to detail. The quarter-round moldings that were installed were cut with exceptional precision and showed great attention to detail. Before the installation, we were having our house painted, so Bobby Clawes sent someone out to cut a strip of carpet away from all the walls to allow the painters easy access to the molding around the floor. Overall, we wish more service providers were as good as Clawes and the Clawes employees. We won't hesitate at all to do business with them again when we go to finish our basement.

The whole experience was great! We went to the showroom in Chantilly, and had a very nice low-pressure experience with one of the owners (sorry...can't recall the name.) He was patient and he suggested some less-expensive options for us. We ended up going with one of the less-expensive options, and we are very happy with the carpet. We received an estimate during our first visit, but it was dependent upon an actual visit and measurement of our home. That was pain-free, and the actual vs. the estimate was pretty close, about $300 more for the actual. (We had forgotten to include some closets when we first visited the store.) We paid 50% down, and set up the installation date. The balance was paid after the installation, to the install team. The installation day also was a great experience. The 3-man crew was polite and no-nonsense. They moved our furniture and worked like gang-busters. The crew foreman spoke good English, and he was a very nice guy. They showed up right on time, and the job took about 6 hours. They never stopped. They managed to put everything back more-or-less where it was, and in a few cases they made some changes that we liked better than the original! (A lamp placed differently) They left us some remnants, and also some extra metal edges. Overall, it was a pleasant and hassle-free experience. The price was great (we compared it to an estimate we got from Lowe's and Home Depot), and we are happy with the quality of the carpet and the quality of the installation.

We needed to have the carpet replaced on one of our stairways before putting our home on the market. We had several estimates given and the guy from Clawes Carpet definitely stood out as the most friendly and interested in customer service. Their price was very fair and we appreciated that they did not have a minimum for labor, as our job was a smaller job. They made it clear that they did not believe that any job was too small, and we liked that. We also appreciated that they did not try to sell us an expensive product when all we needed was the most basic neutral carpet, as we were selling the home. Everyone that we spoke with at Clawes Carpet and everyone that came to our house was focused on providing the best service and were all very friendly. The carpet was installed perfectly and on the day and time that they promised. We will definitely be using Clawes Carpet again in the future at our new home for any flooring needs.
