I have been using American Windows and siding for years on rental properities so it was a clear choice when my personal home needed siding. I renovates homes for profit and I am very particular about the quality of workmanship. I had reseached the products I wanted to use and it included speciality products that nearly every other siding company had no idea what I was talking about. American Windows was fimiliar with all of the products. The level of workmanship and commitment to perfection was overwhelming. Nearly every contractor I hire dissapoints me in some aspect but not American Windows. I was pleased with everything. They communicated with me prior to the installation, during the installaton and after. The work site was kept clean and organized. I will continue to refer American Windows to all my friends.

Excellent service and responsiveness from start to finish. I had a short-notice need to get the work done prior to moving, and American Windows was able to accomplish the task (order windows and install) in a very prompt manner. Sales pitch was not pushy and they understood my needs, and they offered to work with me next year for some additional installation needs. Would definitely recommend them to anyone, and will absolutely use them again.

Response from American Windows & Siding
The only thing more bizarre than waiting 5 years for the customer to post this, is the reasons behind the original, and ridiculous, complaint. The customer, in our professional opinion, is completely unreasonable in their assessment of the project. Due to their ranting and raving over very minor issues, FIVE years ago, perhaps they are diluted in thinking that we will pay them to remove this ridicules report. This is a poor assessment on the customer, not our company. Our company was also blocked, and not allowed the opportunity to rectify these minor issues. Thank You.

I was very pleased with all aspects of the services. I did a lot of research through Angie's List and the Web, and interviewed and got prices from 4 companies. I worked with Jim Littau in their Fairfax office. While American Windows wasn't the least expensive, I found the salesmanship and service from Jim a big part of the reason to go with them, and found it useful to visit their showroom in addition to having Jim come to our home. Jim also gave me a list of people they sold to and I called several and got very positive reviews. They sell a lot of different brands, and with Jim's recommendation went with Vytech vinyl windows manufactured locally in Laurel, MD. He was able to customize them a bit to meet our needs. It took a couple of weeks for the windows to be ordered. Jim then scheduled an installation date with me. The crew, headed by Russ, arrived on time and worked hard and competently (and neatly!) to do the window installation in one day. We are very happy with the functionality and look of the vinyl windows, and they did a good job of capping the outside with aluminum (and did a big area of capping under our bay window). The weren't able to do the shutters the same day because, upon inspection, Jim found some flaws in the shutters he was shipped, and sent them back to get a new bunch. They returned a few days later and did the shutters (we didn't have to be home for them to do that). We are very happy with the results, and would recommend American Windows eagerly.

I was not looking forward to this process because I had heard the horror stories about high-pressure window sales tactics. Fortunately, with the help of Angie's List, I was able to find three vendors that were easy to deal with. While none of the vendors that we talked with were aggressive, we felt most comfortable with Jim at American Windows & Siding. His pricing was competitive on the windows we were looking for (Vytex Fortis-vinyl) and the company got good reviews. Jim also gave some helpful energy tips during the bid process before we had chosen a vendor. We're very happy with the new windows, not only because they have greatly improved the energy efficiency of our home, but because the installation went well. I had lots of questions and was constantly checking things out, but the crew was very patient about it. In the end, the windows look great and work perfectly.. We had American install a new wrap for our box bay window as well. While there was a minor issue with their installation of a small section of the roof, they came back and were able to easily fix it without any fuss. I'd highly recommend American Windows & Siding.

I reached out to about 8 companies. My focus was on good quality material, high-end installation, and a reasonable price. Ed Dunn came out pretty quickly, gathered all necessary information, and provided us with a detailed estimate. No power-selling like about half of the other companies, no harassing calls afterwards, no recommendations that did not seem to make sense to us, and no shortcuts. He left us with a very good, very professional first impression. We checked some references and it all felt good. We went to their office in Fairfax, had a last look at the different window options, and agreed to go ahead. Ed worked with us during the process of selecting colors, trim types, and so on. Ed?s price was not the lowest one I was offered, but it appeared to be the most value, considering the material we picked and the quality I expected during the installation process. The installation was smooth and very professional, as expected. I tend to also look at smaller things, such as how clean was the construction site left behind. There was more or less one full truck load of trash that needed to be hauled away. It was all gone, not a single piece of trash was left in the backyard, not even a piece of Styrofoam (we picked insulated vinyl siding). We have been extremely satisfied with the final product and enjoy it every day. It looks great! We had one minor issue with one of the windows ? the grid in one of the window sashes was slightly off-balance. It?s a problem that was caused by the factory, and it was barely noticeable. Ed got us a replacement sash within 2 weeks. There were also no bad surprises along the way. No delays, no additional costs; everything as discussed. Bottom line is that I?m a pretty picky and detailed consumer. It doesn?t happen very often that someone fully meets my expectations ? Ed Dunn / American Windows did!

After sending an email via Angie's list with regards to requesting a quote and not getting a response, I called them and they claimed they didn't get the email. We contacted American Windows for a quote and received a prompt, professional response. Ed Dunn came to the house and provided a reasonable (comparable) estimate for the work and followed up soon after with a note and a phone call. We stopped by the showroom to check out the options and were impressed with his knowledge and experience. Overall, Ed made a strong sell for the company's experience and Sunrise windows at a price comparable to other quotes we received. When we decided to explore another brand of patio door, Ed pushed back and recommended we avoid branded windows. Ultimately, we decided to start with just the patio doors and selected another brand and contractor for the work. We had a good experience with the quote process and we will consider American Windows when we are ready to do our windows.
Description of Work: We requested quotes for replacing 2 patio doors and 10 windows.
Within a 1-week span, we received estimates from 4 highly recommended contractors that had ?A+? feedback collected from previous Angie?s List customers. We only used considered vendors with >12 reviews on Angie's List for window installations. All the contractors met with us at our convenience and gave relatively short, low pressure, and to-the-point presentations (< 90 minutes including window measurements). Hint: do your research and collect the essential knowledge background information on the brand of window each contractor offers or preferentially markets/installs (there?s lots of comparative reviews on-line) including the general window replacement process (removal, wood rot inspection, trim wrap, low expansion spray foam insulation, warm spacer system, insulated glass, energy ratings, caulking, etc) so you can make an informed decision and talk-the-talk. Also, make sure the estimates are for window types which are comparable (welded seam construction frame, foam sealed insulation, balance system, locking system, screens, insulated glass, warm spacer system, energy ratings and the warranty for materials and installation). Equally important, visit showrooms to see full scale versions of the windows/doors versus the small scale versions estimators bring and demonstrate. We selected American Windows and Siding because of their high level of service, outstanding reputation and their longevity in the business. They actually make the client feel as though they are truly receiving a quality product/service, and at a fair price. There was no pressure to go with them. We were highly impressed with Brad Galleher our Project Manager and the other members of the American Windows and Siding team (Tom and Ed) that we interacted with. Brad fully understood our needs and was very helpful in making suggestions, in particular with the custom exterior for the 2 bay windows. He had photos of exactly what we wanted done. Tom met with us in the showroom on a Saturday morning so we could view/demonstrate/operate in full-scale the window and French door options. Brad?s total inclusive proposal (including the 20% discount for Angie List members) was actually the lowest for what a few vendors reluctantly admitted was a superior quality double pane window and for all the other additional work we wanted done. American Windows were able to match the color of the replacement window trim and gutters to our existing trim color which was not replaced along the roof lines, fascia boards, soffits, and etc. In addition, Vytex was having a spring special so we were able to purchase triple-panes windows for the price of double pane windows. Brad came out and made precise measurements and at that time requested only a 10% deposit to get the work started. Brad kept us fully abreast of the fabrication/shipping status for both the windows and the French door. At our convenience installation was scheduled within 5-weeks. Installation occurred as promised in a timely and efficient manner (2-full 10 hr days). The installation crew led by Russ (Lewis, Ronnie and Manuel) did exceptional work. The crew was very professional, talented, and polite and was always eagerly willing to explain things and answer homeowner questions related to the removal/installation. The work spaces/floors inside were covered with drop clothes and the crew managed to work around our landscape surrounding our home without causing any damage to plants and shrubbery. After installation of each window & French door the crew filled the gaps/voids with low expansion foam (not all vendors do this) and then did an exceptional job of caulking the inside and outside trim work with color matching material. They cleaned-up/vacuumed/swept as they worked and left no mess at the end of the day. The gutter work was sub-contracted out to Young?s Construction who does a lot of work for American Windows. Their professional crew replaced and installed the new gutters/down spouts the day after the window installation (~90 minutes). The inside and outside of our home has a new/updated look and is more quiet. If I had one word to describe Brad and the installation crew, it would be integrity. You can trust them to do the right thing and in your best interest. American Windows and Siding exceeded our expectations and without any reservations we highly recommend this company and will use them for any future window, door or siding work.
Description of Work: Project included removal/ tear-out of builder grade wood windows (~ 28 yrs old) and installation of 24 replacement vinyl double hung windows (Vytex Potomac windows with tilt in sashes for easy cleaning) with grids; removal and installation of two large picture bay windows (no grids); removal and installation of a large French door which exits to a deck; and replacement of new gutters and down-spouts. Window frames were inspected for wood rot (no significant signs). The existing aluminum window trim was replaced with new aluminum window trim to match existing house trim. We wanted some custom trim work done on the exterior of two bay windows and the existing aluminum trim removed and replaced with new aluminum trim.

Brad honestly went out of his way to help me even though it was clear it wasn't going to financially benefit him in any way, talk about great customer service! I wouldn't hesitate to use them again or recommend them to someone else. If they were willing to help me out on such a minor job (to them...BIG savings to me!) I can only imagine how seriously they take customer service on large installations.
Description of Work: I contacted American Windows in an attempt to repair two broken tilt latches on a window which prevented the window from locking. I was at a dead end since the manufacturer had gone out of the business and it seemed the entire window would need replacing in order to effectively solve the problem. Although I was told they typically work on large jobs and don't handle repairs, Brad said I was welcome to send a photo of the tilt latch and he'd see if it was a part they stocked. I sent him the photo and he responded immediately not only saying that he stocked the exact piece I needed but that they would visit the property to install them!

The team arrived on time and promptly removed the old windows and installed the new windows. I had quite a lot of rotten wood and the team removed it and replaced every piece. The new windows went in very quickly and they fit perfect. The team put down tarps inside the house, did not make a mess. I was very impressed with work and professionalism of the team. Even though my job was small compared to someone replacing 20 or 30 windows the Sales person who came to my house was honest and gave me a competitive quote and the company performed all services in an excellent manner.

I was very impressed by Tom and the American Windows team. I interviewed a lot of windows and doors contractors for our remodel project and found that this sectors has a lot of shady companies with classic high pressure tactics. Fortunately, I was able to use feedback on Angie's List to find two great companies to choose from and American Windows was one of them. Even though I did not select them, I'm 100% sure they would have performed very well and given us a good value for our project. I selected the other company soley because they had other services available for our total remodel project and I wanted to keep the number of contractors we are using low. If you are looking for windows, doors or siding, make sure you put American Windows on your list to interview and ask for Tom. He is low pressure and great to work with as you plan your project. They are very competetive on price and quality.

We needed to replace old, wooden single-pane windows that were in disrepair. We preferred a specific brand of windows to match others in the house and sought a full tear-out rather than replacement windows in the existing frames. Ed Dunn came to discuss the job and provide an estimate. He was knowledgeable and made his recommendations about the window types and brands the firm typically installs, but there was no high-pressure sales job whatsoever. He happily provided an estimate based upon my preferred brand and style of window and provided a ROM estimate for the job exactly as I wanted it performed. He communicated well via e-mail over the next few weeks concerning options and pricing. We determined that a specific model-line was required to optimally fit our rough openings. This job would somewhat expensive due to the particular installation options and window models we chose, but the prices were in line with those of the other firms I had considered. Once we decided to go with American Windows, Ed came out again, made precise measurements, discussed the installation in detail, we signed the contract and made a 10% deposit. The windows were ordered, but took several weeks to arrive. Ed provided email updates about the order status. Finally, after a four weeks the windows came in, and we scheduled an installation date. The two-man crew arrived exactly on time at 7:30 am, worked steadily throughout the day, and wrapped up a little after 4pm. They were well prepared, had all the supplies, tools, and windows, and were very professional and polite. They cleaned up as they worked. After they left, the only evidence they were ever there were the windows, aside from a trace of sawdust on the driveway missed by their sweeping. A month down the road, we are enjoying our windows and appreciating the reduced draftiness in the house. This job met or exceeded all my expectations, and I will probably use American for subsequent window replacements.

The sales process was painless, not too pushy and Jim was really frank and honest. Once we ordered the windows, there were no delays and the company was nice to hold off installation until after Thanksgiving. The install crew was thorough, clean, and Russ did a great job overseeing the process. Did the whole house, replaced 18 leaky, rattle prone windows with condensation and busted weather stripping from 8:30 to 4:30 including cleanup, and now I have energy tax credit qualifying windows that look great. Only complaints: 1. they did mess up two of the windows--ordered the wrong grids (we actually like how the new ones look), but they said they would replace the window for free if the home owners association demanded that we switch grids 2. wish they warned us to cover the furniture before kicking up a ton of construction dust tearing out the old windows and trying to get the new ones to fit--the crew cleaned up pretty well, vacuuming and wiping things down, but it would have been easier to just cover everything with old sheets 3. didn't wipe all the windows and sills prior to leaving and some of the tall windows required a ladder for us to get to--would have been easier for them to do while they were still up there BUT those are minor complaints and we should have said something before they left and I am sure they would have happily complied, this is more of an FYI to other window newbies who might want to know these things.

They were really good. We didn’t go top, top of the line. We talked to a couple of other companies but we liked this company. We really liked that he told us that after we got the new windows we might have to install the window coverings differently which nobody else mentioned. That was a huge issue and a major deal. They were able to get ours in without us having that problem which was a good deal.

BradGalleher, at the Fairfax location, was great. I received three estimates. His estimate was not the lowest, but it was very close to the lowest. More importantly, he did not waste my time (3+ hours with the other two 'salesmen') insisting I hear a sales pitch that I did not want ot listen too. He was friendly, concise, reviewed my needs and discussed options quickly, and provided a complete estimate on-the-spot without insisting I had to "sign the contract immediately in order to receive the best possible deal", as the other two window companies did. His price was his price, whether I signed the contract then or a week later. The installers arrived when they said they would and the installation went with a hitch. My new windows are simply beautiful and the process of replacing the windows was painless. Without the Angie's List discount, however, the price might have been too high for me to have awarded them the job.

The American Windows salesman, Brad, came out and provided us with a very attractive estimate on replacing the existing front and rear French Doors with high energy efficient doors by ProVia. Brad was helpful but low key and did not apply any sales pressure, as some other salesmen had done. We had gotten four estimates on the doors and American Windows was the best. After we decided to go with American Windows Brad returned and we signed a contract for the work. In about four weeks the doors arrived and we set up a day for installation. The four man crew that came out was neat and clean. They started on time and worked steadily for about five hours, removing the old doors and door frames and replacing them with the new ProVia doors. Brad stopped out during the job to make sure everything was going smoothly. The work crew removed the old doors and frames and took them away. They cleaned up afterward and left the house looking good. When I initially began getting estimates for the doors I was surprised by the cost, but after seeing the amount of labor involved and level of craftsmanship needed to do a professional job, I can now understand the cost of the doors. It is not something that most people are qualified to do on their own. The doors are beautiful and sturdy. We are very pleased by their appearance including getting a color that closely matched our house paint. Because the doors are high energy efficient we are looking forward to a tax credit at the end of the year. I would gladly recommend American Windows to anyone interested in new doors.
Description of Work: American Windows replaced my original front door and rear French Doors with new steel, high energy efficient doors. They also replaced the hardware on the door leading to the garage and basement French Doors to match the new doors. The replacement doors were made by ProVia. They removed the old doors and frames and hauled them away.

This was our first experience with this company. Jim, our project manager, did the initial estimate, final measurements, and stopped by a few times during installation. Overall it was a great experience. We chose them based on reputation and the style of window we wanted. We chose casement windows by Vytex (a local Maryland company). One window came the wrong size so we did wait a few weeks before the final window was installed. There price was near the average of all the bids we received. Since I'm writing this report a year after the installation I can say there have been no problems. In fact, we selected the same company to do our vinyl siding, soffit, fascia board, and gutter replacements.

This was our second experience with this company. Jim, our project manager, did the initial estimate and stopped by a few times during installation. Jim also did our window replacement one year earlier which is written up in a separate report. Overall it was a good experience although I gave them a B on punctuality as the work started about 7 weeks later than scheduled. Apparently there was an issue with our siding order so we got pushed behind another job which went longer than expected. Still, once the crew and materials arrived it was a great experience. The price was pretty much average based on the quotes we got from other companies. Because we wanted yellow vinyl siding almost all the companies ended up using the same supplier of siding. We also felt their vinyl hidden-hole soffit was much better looking than the other contractors selection. Both the siding and soffit were Mainstreet by CertainTeed. Gutters were white alumnium and the cladding was PVC over metal.

Estimate went well, and the work was performed within a few weeks of the estimate. The sliding door and window installation took 4 hours from start to finish. Everything was great!
Description of Work: Replaced a sliding door and kitchen window.
The workers showed up on time and took approximately 6 hours to complete the work. The window came out beautifully, minus a few dents in the moulding on the exterior window. Bill promptly had these imperfections fixed once it was brought to his attention. The windows have added much needed light into our home, and the bay window looks like it's been there all along.
Description of Work: American Window and Siding performed several services for us: 1. Removed the kitchen window, framed, insulated, and dry walled the opening. 2. Reopened a boarded up window in our dining room and a double pained window in the second bedroom. 3. Moved two sliding windows from the front of the home. a. Reused one for the formerly boarded up window in the living room. b. Reused the second for a very old, rotting window of the same size in the guest bedroom. 4. Cut siding and interior wall on the front of the home to meet the bay window size. 5. Installed double hung Sunrise window in the second bedroom. 6. Installed premium grade Sunrise baywindow with 24'' oak interior seat board. 7. Installed new molding around bay window to match existing style.

From our first meeting at the showroom with Jim to the last piece of vacuum cleaning at the end of the install, the whole process went without a hitch. Email queries were always answered, the crew arrived on time, the work was done in a professional and well managed way. We received excellent and clear advice from Jim - no up-selling at all - and the products were clearly explained to us. I feel we got good value in terms of advice, the windows themselves (I can already feel a difference in the house) and in the quality of the workmanship. Recommended without hesitation.

AW&S replaced 28 windows in my home. Bill took the time to explain every option and was very patience with a dozen back and forth e-mails. The windows came in faster than expected and the installation was done in one day. Installers were professional and respectful. Everything was top notch.

Great customer experience & the owner (Bill) is willing to go the extra mile to make customers happy. My windows were in bad shape, with two not functioning properly, one hard to open and 3 windows in the basement that would not open at all. I got 3 other estimates - 2 were $1,000 to $2,000 more than AW's estimate & the other was about the same, but I felt that AW offered a better product for the price. Bill came over to give the estimate, arriving on time. He is very friendly & personable & definitely knows his business. He went over a couple of different brand of windows with me & listened to what I wanted with respect to the storm door. Because I live in a condo in a historic area, I had to be careful about what I ordered & Bill was able to provide me with the best options for windows that would not cause problems with the HOA. When I decided to go with AW, Bill came out to do the measuring & was able to notice some quirks about my windows. The installation went smoothly and the crew was extremely professional. They made sure that the outside blended in with the other units. There was one problem with the installation -- I had ordered full screens for the windows, but half screens were delivered instead. Bill personally made sure that the full screens were ordered & came over to install them. My new windows look beautiful and are easy to open. My cats are happy because, since all the windows can now open, there can be more open windows for them to enjoy. The only post-installation problem I had is with the storm door. The door itself is great and a big improvement over the old screen door. However, I was noticing that when it rained, rain was accumulating on the threshold between the storm door and the back door & moisture was appearing on the window panes of the back door - which is something I had not noticed with the old screen door. And then, in a severe rain, my awning over the back door started to separate from the wall and it was removed by the maintenance crew (hopefully to be replaced). While this has nothing to do with AW, the removal of the awning left the back door entirely exposed to the elements and in another severe thunderstorm, water came in the house from the back door. I called AW & Bill came out to be sure the door was installed properly. While he said the door was installed correctly, he suggested a couple of minor fixes to help with the water issue and came out himself a few days later to do the fixes which involved adding a piece to the back door (a rubber edged thingy to help close the gap between the door and the floor and sealed a metal strip on the threshold with silicone to prevent water from seeping under it. He didn't have to make the fixes, but did so cheerfully and promptly.
