My first visit last month didn't seem to solve the continuous running of the compressor unit and I was upset that there was no added coolant provided. Rob called and discussed this with me and offered to come out and re-do the service and also service the furnace. Jerry arrived when scheduled and spent a great deal of time on making sure that I was satisfied. He immediately realized that something was amiss with the unit when he arrived and it was 58 degrees out and the unit was running with no one having been in the house for over 2 hours. The unit now runs normally and is not running all the time and is functioning correctly. My wife and I really appreciate the kind and courteous service we received. We also appreciate a company that will work on a problem until they get it right and the customer is satisfied.
Description of Work: They rechecked my air conditioner and added a small amount of coolant. Jerry also adjusted the temperatures on the outside unit. They also did a complementary annual service and during that time they found that the blower fins were really dirty. They cleaned the blower and reinstalled it. At the end of the service the technician cleaned up the work area before leaving.

I suppose that people's past experiences with other service companies can make them think that the company doesn't care about getting the job done right - even if it means having to go back out. We are not that way. If you have a problem, please call us and give us the opportunity to correct it. I may not always agree with a complaint but I still want to hear about it and offer another perspective. If I do agree with a complaint, I WANT to fix it. They cleaning and service check of A/C (with addition of freon if needed) and heat unit. Not much to tell. Tech was nice, knowledgeable and provided information on best system to purchase (when I was ready) that was most reliable. I know that the unit I have is about 14 years old. I expected there may be a claim for some problem currently existing that would be an additional charge but the technician remained honest (no problems found). Unit has been heating prior to summer and has cooled just fine all summer.
Description of Work: I purchased a deal from this company for $59 for an AC tune-up.

We are Tidewater's Oldest Heating and Cooling Contractor for a reason. As the grandson of the founder and son of the current owners, I've been taught that our reputation is the key to success. Do what you say, when you say, do it right the first time, and stand behind it were axioms that were drilled into me. These are the same principles that I preach to our guys. You have to be honest if want repeat business and referrals. Lastly, if you make a mistake you need to own up to it and fix it.

CALL STOKLEY'S, SPEAK WITH ROB SHORTT, AND YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH SUPERIOR SERVICE!! DO NOT HESITATE -- CALL STOKLEY'S!!! I cannot emphasize that enough to my fellow Hampton Roads Homeowners as I have experienced a slew of local area LOUSY contractors, for all kinds of jobs!! STOKLEY'S IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT -- THEY ARE ALL-AROUND AWESOME!!! I wish I had found them ten years ago when I purchased a home in Norfolk and had the entire HVAC system redone -- that system proved to be nothing but trouble -- however, the trouble was due SOLELY to its original LOUSY installation and subsequent LOUSY maintenance, all by the same LOUSY local HVAC company!!! Neighbors, do NOT be like me, throwing good money after bad for far too long. There are way too many local companies who either don't know what they are doing or just want to keep filling their pockets with your hard-earned money by taking short-cut after short-cut and never doing the job correctly!! STOKLEY'S SERVICES, INC is EVERYTHING a homeowner would want from a company!! Rob Shortt is extremely personable and CARES about you and what you need done. He gets it -- he understands his company's name and reputation are everything. His staff and crew of great workers are tracking the same as Robl!! When asked, EVERY worker at Stokley's mentioned to me how happy he was to be a part of the company. How often does that happen? Workers happy to work? Not very often!! I am positive that is why STOKLEY'S has been in business since 1938 -- they honestly care about their customers AND their employees; they take pride in and are happy to provide their services; and, they have done the job right for decade after decade!! How many company's could even come close to making such a claim? Not many!! Stokley's MUST be doing something right to have made it this far -- just think about that!! I know it finally donned on me to look for a business which had been around a long time, weathered every storm, natural and man-made!! Not only did STOKLEY'S do the job right, they left my house BETTER than how they found it!! I now have two very nice marble rock enclosures on which the outside units sit. I also have drain pipes which move the discharge (AC units) water away from my house. (The previous one stopped near the base of my home, causing the water to puddle next to my foundation.) By the way, Rob Shortt and his crew made these little "extras" happen. Why? Because they know how to do the job right and completely, and are actually concerned about your satisfaction!! As the Homeowner with a dead AC unit, I was simply focused on finally having a unit which worked correctly to cool my home!! Another two great and novel things about Stokley's: 1) they literally worked in my home until the job was done!! I cannot tell you how many contractors I have had who leave the job for days, weeks, even a full month before returning to finish it. Some never even finish the job!! Not Stokley's, they returned day after day until it was done, working long yet efficient hours; and, 2) Rob actually stays in touch!!! Again, how many companies don't even return phone calls or take an interest in the job you are paying good money for?? Way too many!! (I recently returned to the States after living overseas for four years. Due to the weakened economy, I expected to find people and companies who actually would want to work and get paid. Nope, that is not the case!! People and companies want my money, but don't want to work for it!! What has happened to the work ethic of the WWII generation? It is barely visible anymore!!) My fellow Homeowners, I will close this review shortly. First, have you heard of the word "lagniappe" (pronounced "lan-yap")? It is used a lot in Louisiana and Mississippi. Lagniappe is akin to the Baker's Dozen; instead of 12 donuts, you receive 13 for the price of 12. Lagniappe is that little something extra, that little bonus that makes customers feel special and keep coming back. Stokley's has mastered lagniappe!! They are without question the absolute best company for HVAC services in Norfolk/VA Beach. Before I decided to go with Stokley's, I had a couple of the "highly rated" HVAC companies come to my home to estimate the work and assess the LOUSY installation of my first HVAC system. None gave me the same type of genuine care, concern, and professionalism that Stokley's did. More significantly, none seemed to possess the all-around, top to bottom expertise that Stokley's did either. I noted the difference immediately, with the initial phone call I made to Stokley's, and then with Rob's personal interest every step of the way in the work which was required. In fact, Rob himself, once all work had been completed, contacted me to ensure all had been completed to my satisfaction and the units were running properly. To end this review, I simply cannot say enough good things about Stokley's -- they were so incredibly different than the majority of companies I have hired to work in my home or have had in my home to provide estimates or assess damage. As I told Rob, there are now two companies I would recommend in all of Hampton Roads. Stokley's is one of them!! (The other is Dalton Roofing Company -- again, I know about roofing companies, having experienced six of them thus far!!) Thanks for reading -- if you have made it this far -- just call Stokley's!! You will NOT be disappointed. Promise!! I don't ask much from people or companies I hire other than for each to do the job that needs to be done (the job I have hired them to do). Obviously, my expectation is then that it will be done correctly!! Stokley's Services, Inc is one of the very few -- in my case, two companies -- which get that!! MANY THANKS TO ROB AND HIS ENTIRE STAFF AT STOKLEY'S!!!

Words have escaped me - and that doesn't usually happen. I'm not sure how to respond to such wonderful praise. I know I have great people that work here and I know the kind of work we do. I hate to use the expression that they "work for me". I truly believe that it takes a team effort to do what we do. I am so happy that you were so pleased with the work we did and thank you for the praise. It was a pleasure working with you. Most of my past employees still call and / or come in to visit. One of them called for some help for his Mom's house about the time we were installing one of the systems at your home. He told me that the owner of a company that he worked for as a young man had a slogan that I absolutely love. It goes, "Perfection is expected, excellence will be tolerated." That is what I want from my guys and part of why they like working here. I think most people want to feel good about their job and if they know they are doing quality work and are being treated not just fairly, but nicely as well, it will show in the work they do. If you don't treat them right and encourage short cuts, that will show too. As I told you at your home, if you have any problems please call me. I can't fix it if I don't know it's broke. Knowing I had a minor freon leak in one system, I have been on the look-out for months for discount coupons offering AC service including freon and was pleased when Angie's List offered this Big Deal. Unfortunately, the website would not permit me to purchase two coupons for my dual-zone system, but when I phoned the company to schedule the maintenance, they kindly offered to service both systems for the same $59 each. The technician arrived at scheduled time. He was very thorough and very friendly. Throughout the service call he spent a lot of time showing me what he was doing and explaining the reason for the various actions and explaining how the systems functioned . He also showed me several areas where the original installers (a different company) could have done a better job. He also very tactfully explained why I could have made better choices back when the units were purchased. Unlike techs from the previous company I used, he did not try to sell me new systems and repair parts, but advised me on how to get the most life out of the current obsolete systems and what to do once they become too expensive and troublesome to maintain and repair.
Description of Work: Performed annual air conditioning tune-up on two systems including recharge of one system that has a small freon leak.

We always try to keep our customers informed on the condition of the equipment and what can be done to increase the life expectancy and efficiency of the system. Our first time at a new customer's home is especially crucial to inform them of everything we see. We don't want them to think everything is okay if it isn't. I suppose that they think we are just trying to sell them a new system. The flip side to that is if we don't tell the customer they'll be upset when it does die because we didn't inform them. the representative was polite. after intervention by Angie List, the representative finally came to our home. As far as I can tell he checked air conditioner / heater, and reported we need new system as the system would fail at any time. Spent quite a bit of time encouraging our purchase of their sytem.

I have to disagree with your assessment. You seem to be shooting the messenger because you didn't like the message. Angie's List did not intervene to get us to go out. You never responded to our message to call us to set up an appointment. How can we go out if you never bothered to call us to set up an appointment? Now you claim that Angie's List had to intervene after 2.5 months, really? My technician certainly did clean your system. He found that your system was 24 years old which is well past its life expectancy of 15-18 years. The fan motor was weak and the compressor is drawing high amps. This means that both the fan motor and the compressor are failing. This means that the24 year old system is slowly dying. The coils, which he cleaned, were very dirty and there was mold growing in the air handler: both of these indicate that the system had not been serviced in some time or it had not been done properly. He recommended that you "replace the system soon for better reliability and efficiency." He also gave you 3 different prices to replace the system - which you requested. He stayed long enough to answer your questions. You must not have been too upset with his services because you even asked for a price on a mini-split system which he also provided. He cleaned the system, advised you of its condition, and gave you a price to take care of it. He did everything that he is supposed to do. Again, don't be mad at the messenger because you didn't like the message.

I am part of the neighborhood gas line renewals. When they went to re-light there were some coding issues. I took advantage of the Angie's List coupon and had them do the A/C unit but also price the extra's I needed to bring it up to code. Although the work is not completed yet (it has only been 24 hours) they have provided a price, completed the work on they A/C unit and I expect a call tomorrow with plans of their return. They have been efficient, knowledgeable, professional and most of all not "looking" for things to fix. They have offered suggestions for my upkeep and of course the hint of the further discussion of maintenance contract but I would expect this. So far I am greatly pleased.
Description of Work: Cleaned and evaluated heating and A/C unit. Reran drain. Checkec vents and ducted work that I had questions about. Everything was Ok.

Fortunately we found and repaired it during the summer months. You certainly would want carbon monoxide dumping into your home when the furnace is running during the winter. The service went well. They were very helpful and did a great job. The technician was very honest and did not try to upsell me. He kept me informed of what I may need to do in the future. Scheduling was very easy.

Thank you for the nice review. I think that the reason that we have remained in business is because we are honest and don't try to sell you things that you don't need. I am constantly telling our techs and installers to treat our customers how we want to be treated or how they would want someone to treat their moms. We do need to inform you of our findings but will only offer you things that we feel you need or that may help you increase the life of your equipment. Sometimes the equipment is in such bad shape that we willl even tell the customer not to spend money on trying to keep it running as it is merely throwing good money after bad.

They called me right away to schedule an appt. Very nice on the phone. Worked around my schedule. After a system tune up they asked me if I was having any problems. Told them I had to have the Freon serviced every year. The tech serviced the system with Freon and then talked about a new system. I decided to go with a new system with a 10 year warranty. I plan on selling my house in 4 or 5 years so I thought a new system with a warranty was a good selling point. They are coming out next week to install the new system. The technician did not charge me for all the Freon he installed (Saving me $400). looking forward to having them out to install my new system. Will update this review after they install the new system.

Stokely's is one of the best businesses in our area. They are polite, professional, and genuinely care about their customers. They worked around my schedule and called about 30 minutes ahead of time to make sure I was home and ready for them. My technician went above and beyond to provide the best possible service. I followed up with Rob after the service and he was equally as helpful. There were a few problem areas noted and I will definitely use them to fix all issues found.

Jerry did a fantastic job cleaning and servicing our AC that was malfunctioning. He was friendly, knowledgable and offered suggestions to increase the efficiency of our unit. He also worked late into the evening without complaining.

Went fine. They made it easy to have the furnace in a home I rent out be inspected. They were very willing to work with the tenant to find a time that worked out. As far as I know the service went well, I did hear that they were very friendly and professional. A full report was mailed to me at the time of service, however, I did not receive it. When I called Stokely they were very helpful, gave a full run-down on the phone and remailed the report. I will likely use them again.

Had a 4 hour appointment window, asked the dispatcher if they could give me a call when the technician was on the way. Asked if I could get a 30 minute notice before the technician arrived. Received a call that said 30 minutes till the technician showed up and almost exactly 30 minutes later the Stokley's van pulled up out front. The technician was very professional, cleaned up after himself, had all parts needed with him and gave me a few pointers as to how to best run my AC system.
Description of Work: Took the technician all of 5 minutes to figure out the capacitor on my AC unit had gone bad, he had the replacement on the truck and in 15 minutes total the AC was back up and running. He gave me a few pointers, checked the rest of the AC operation out, and everything was good.

Thank you for the kind words. We know that it is hard for some people to fit a service call or maintenance visit in their schedule. It is hard to predict an exact time for a service call as we never know what we will run into on previous calls. We can give an approximate time but we do everything possible to help the customer fit the service call in their schedule. We always call when we are on the way so it just takes a simple extra step and call to give a little extra notice so the customer can leave work (or whatever) so they can meet us with as little inconvenience as possible. .

Initially everything was fine. We received a call from the tech after diagnosing the problem saying it was the Condenser Fan Motor that needed to be replaced because it wasn't reaching high speed. We were told the Samsung parts were expensive and hard to come by in the states and they shipped from Japan. We were quoted $950. Both myself and my wife talked to the technician over the phone (we no longer reside in the house/state) inquiring why it was so expensive and about other options. This company recommended Mitsubishi over Samsung and said the parts were cheaper, more reliable, etc. They didn't recommend fixing the unit, but installing a Mitsubishi or possibly seeing if our homeowners policy covered it. Having tenants in the house and summer in full swing we had to move quickly and decided to go ahead with the work. About a week after the fan motor was replaced it broke again. We called the same company/technician. This time we were told the Main PCB board was fried. He said it looked like it had been struck by lightening. We were quoted another $1000 for the fix. So I did a little research in light of these two exorbitant costs. This is $2000 worth of work. A new unit quoted from another reputable company in Norfolk is about $1800 uninstalled taxes included. My unit is no longer in production otherwise I would have just completely replaced the exterior unit for about $1000 (uninstalled) and reaped the benefits of a new warranty. During my research I ran across a site (samsungparts.com) where I found the Condenser Fan motor for my unit for $68. I called Quietside (the Samsung mini-split distributor in the States) to inquire about parts and this site. I was told direct from Samsung that they tell people to buy parts from this site all the time and they are genuine Samsung parts. The pricing is factory direct so cheaper than you could ever get one from an HVAC contractor. It is minus all the markup. I was also curious about the normal markup on a $60 part and Samsung told me their list price for the Condenser Fan motor for my unit is $294. That is the end user price, my price that I should expect to pay. I told them I paid $950 for mine and they were shocked. They could not think of a scenario where it should cost that much. They told me anything over $500 for that part is ludicrous. I told them the company's explanation for the cost, limited availability and shipping from Japan. They said they have 3 warehouses in the states that stock all their parts. One is in Pennsylvania. The person I talked to said she knew all the distributors in Virginia. She knew none of them would charge enough for that part to warrant the kind of mark up I paid. I asked the company about this and was given a generalized answer about how they paid a lot more than $60 for the part. I was also told how they have to mark up and pay for business costs and make a profit as well. Maybe they have a terrible Samsung parts distributor......I don't know....or maybe I paid their entire utility/insurance/taxes/licenses for the month....... I do know that I was charged $600 of excessive markup for a fan motor that either went directly to this company or their distributor. This company may do perfectly fair reasonable work on forced air HVAC units or Mitsubishi units, but they certainly don't on Samsungs. As a consumer that doesn't live in Virginia any longer, I put trust in people I hire to do work for me and expect a fair price. I shouldn't have to do hours of internet research when I am quoted a price to make sure I am not being ripped off and that the parts aren't coming direct from Japan for $1000. While I was on the phone with Samsung I also discussed the completed maintenance and subsequent failure of the main PCB board. Samsung told me when the unit is having the problem I described, they recommend replacing the board first. That is usually the problem, not the fan. Then the fan if that doesn't work. So they suspect it may have been a bad board in the first place. So all these issues are the reason for my poor review and why I would not recommend this company to fix a Samsung unit. I have no problem paying a company a fair price to perform work for me. $1000 to replace a fan motor is wildly excessive. To pay that much overhead is ridiculous.

I would like to start by saying that we did not install the unit. According to your wife, the unit has been nothing but problems since it was installed. After we made our repair the unit was working fine until after a lightning storm took out the PCB board. We suggested that you talk to your Home Owner's Insurance Company because it was more than likely covered under the policy. Apparently, according to your wife it was not. Sir, your wife told me that the part cost about $1200 to repair, not us. We never quoted you a price as your wife said that you were just going to put in a window unit instead. I would have to deduce that this part has been found to be defective by a previous service company. Your wife stated that you have spent over $6000 to repair a unit that you paid another company $5,000 to install in 2008. You correctly state that I did not recommend repairing the unit to begin with. You did not mention that I did not recommend repairing the unit the second time. You also correctly state that the unit was repaired and operating fine after our initial visit. You did not state that the unit was working properly for over a month until it was damaged by lightning. To be clear, you went against my recommendation to repair the unit to begin with. The unit suffered damage due to a lighting storm after our repair. Now you are complaining about a price that we did not even quote your wife for an additional repair that was not the fault of anyone other than Mother Nature. I must deduce that you are unhappy with your initial decision to install a brand that we do not recommend, we did not install, we were not called out to service until the warranty expired 5 years and approximately $6,000 worth of repair bills (from another company) later, we did not even recommend that you repair the unit. Lightning caused the subsequent damage. I do not know why you are upset with us. I am sorry that you did not listen to my recommendations: perhaps if you had I would not have to be responding to a negative comment on this site.

Excellent! Highly recommend and plan to use for all of our HVAC needs and concerns. We met with Stokley and even though this is an extremely busy time of year, they found a way to complete our project only a few short days later. Stokley was on-time, did not change the price, and executed the project with a high degree of professionalism. They employed three technicians who worked diligently for a full day to complete our project. In fact, all lines look very clean, highly professional, safe, and nothing appears to be done "on the cheap." Stokley even went above and beyond by patching a previous hole left by the poor installation of the previous lines. And, even better, the technicians cleaned up everything after the project --- our garage looked better and cleaner than before the project started. Overall, I highly recommend Stokley. I found them to be honest, responsive, reliable, and technically proficient.
Description of Work: We had a very specific project that required moving one of our our HVAC condensers and re-running the HVAC lines from both outdoor condensers from the previous location outside of the house. The lines were originally run under our deck and outside of the house. While preparing to install a stone patio, we discovered the lines and realized they needed to be moved. Most companies suggest running the lines outside alone the house. However, Stokley developed a solution that enabled us to run the lines through our garage (inside and without an eyesore to our patio) and re-connect in the crawlspace without exposing the lines outside of the house.

We could not have been more pleased with the work performed. It was incredibly hot on the days they were working and some of the work was in the attic. Miserable conditions, but the guys were super nice and professional. They were great with the kids too. They worked late to get the project done so we could have air conditioning to sleep in that night. We've recommended Stokley's to several of our friends.
Description of Work: Replaced both air conditioning units and furnaces in or house. Reconfigured ductwork on the third floor to improve air flow.

Called Stokley's and they had a technician call me back in minutes. The things I liked about the call. They were very up front in their emergency pricing. 130 for the after hours, and 30 for every 15 minutes. None of the others, who did not call me back, had anything like that level of disclosure, two thumbs up. When the tech called he started asking me questions about the system, and offered me a solution I could do over the phone. He stayed on with me as the system started working again. New house, emergency shut of switch in off position. I know I know, head hanging low, but I said. Hey I totally owe you the 130 and he said not at all just remember us for your future needs. Wow. Nice Job Sir

I now have a multi year relationship with this company and completely trust them.
Description of Work: Stokley's installed a new AC and heating system for our downstairs zone about 5 or 6 years ago and have been doing the twice yearly maintenance on this system (American Standard dual fuel) and our older upstairs system (Carrier). Their people are professional and courteous. During our most recent planned maintenance checks they discovered that the two thermostatically controlled exhaust fans in the attic were not working. Although this was not part of checking the upstairs unit, they noticed the problem, checked the thermostats and determined that the fans would not turn. They then suggested that I needed to contact a roofing company replace these fans that penetrate the roof. The cost cited with this service is for a year long service program for two systems, and includes additional maintenance (refrigerant) on the upstairs system.
